Talking with Harold Perrineau about FROM Season Two Apr 26, 2023

Harold Perrineau returns to the show to chat about Season Two of FROM, the horror mystery box show (with elements of fantasy and sci-fi) airing Sundays on MGM+. He chats with host Aaron Sagers about the second season of FROM, the overall “plan” of the show, more about what scares him, and how introducing new characters to a show can be tricky. Plus, we chat about his character Boyd’s potential for evil.

FROM unravels the mystery of a nightmarish town that traps all those who enter. As the unwilling residents fight to keep a sense of normalcy and search for a way out, they must also survive the threats of the surrounding forest – including the terrifying creatures that come out when the sun goes down. In season two, hidden truths about the nature and terrifying origins of the town begin to emerge, even as life for its residents is plunged into chaos by the arrival of mysterious newcomers. And Harold Perrineau leads the ensemble cast as Boyd, the town’s reluctant sheriff.

Perrineau has had an incredible career, appearing in Oz, Baz Luhrmann’s Romeo + Juliet, The Matrix franchise, Sons of Anarchy, The Best Man movies and TV series, and some of our favorites, the Constantine show and of course, and playing Michael on LOST.

It's Evil Dead Rise week at Talking Strange because host Aaron Sagers is so in love with this new horror flick. In the main episode, we speak to the stars Alyssa Sutherland and Lily Sullivan, as well as writer/director Lee Cronin about the fifth installment of the Evil Dead franchise. Talking Evil Dead Rise with Director and Cast Apr 19, 2023

This week it's all about Evil Dead Rise, the fifth installment of the Evil Dead franchise. We speak with director Lee Cronin, and stars Alyssa Sutherland and Lily Sullivan about this bloody good flick opening April 21.

Although Evil Dead Rise stands alone from the Sam Raimi/Bruce Campbell/Rob Tapert projects (Evil Dead '78, The Evil Dead, Army of Darkness and Ash vs. Evil Dead) and from 2013's Evil Dead by Fede Álvarez, Cronin's film ties the others together while still telling its own unique story. Set in a rundown LA apartment building, Our conversation explores those connections, and what happens after the final scene in the movie. Plus, we talk about dealing with buckets of blood, and getting beaten up by acting in this movie.

Talking Renfield with Robert Kirkman & Chris McKay Apr 12, 2023

In the new horror comedy monster movie Renfield, Nicolas Cage plays the iconic Count Dracula, and Nicholas Hoult plays his long suffering assistant/familiar Renfield. When Renfield decides to enter codependency therapy, the movie explores what it's like working for the world's worst boss for centuries. In this episode, producer Kirkman talks about the gory humor, and the Universal Monster-verse, as well as the origins of his story idea. Director Chris McKay also joins the show to discuss his love of Dracula, the various iterations of the character shown in the movie, and what it's like to work with Nic Cage.

Talking Enys Men with Director Mark Jenkin Apr 06, 2023

The new Cornish Folk Horror Enys Men, is a deliberate, unsettling film about an unnamed Volunteer on an uninhabited island whose existence seems routine, until it begins to spiral with fluctuations in time, encounters with phantoms, and strange lichens that start appearing everywhere. In this episode, director Mark Jenkin discusses the concept of Cornish Folk Horror, and the nature of time within the film — and why trying to make sense of it might “drive you mad.” Additionally, he discusses the films 1970s horror influences, including an unintentional homage to 1973’s Don’t Look Now. He also explains why this is one you have to see in theaters.

In this episode we’re talking about the book “The Black Guy Dies First: Black Horror Cinema From Fodder to Oscar" by Dr. Robin R. Means Coleman and Mark H. Harris

The book explores the journey of Black actors and creators in modern horror cinema, from the fodder epitomized by night of the Living Dead to Get Out. It delves into themes, tropes, and traits that have come to characterize Black roles in horror.

The authors are Dr. Robin R. Means Coleman is Northwestern’s vice president and associate provost for diversity and inclusion. An internationally prominent and award-winning scholar, Dr. Coleman’s work focuses on media studies and the cultural politics of Blackness

And Mark H. Harris is an entertainment journalist who has written about cinema and pop culture for over twenty years for New York magazine, Vulture, Rotten Tomatoes, and more. A lifelong horror fan, he created the website BlackHorrorMovies.com in 2005 as the premier online source chronicling the history of Black representation and achievement in horror cinema. He was a featured commentator in the acclaimed documentary Horror Noire and the Shudder series Behind the Monsters.
