Special Episode: How to Manage Stress and Anxiety During the Coronavirus Pandemic May 02, 2020
    Show notes

Let's face it: These are scary, uncertain and potentially highly stressful times. News about the Coronavirus COVID-19 fills our timelines and our TV screens, and we're all having to make major adjustments to our lives and routines, which have basically been turned upside down.

Though we know we will get through this (and I believe we will!), we have to acknowledge that this is a trauma none of us has ever experienced before -- and as women, especially, we need space to talk some of this stuff through.

So I recently hosted our first of many "Wine Down" sessions for Support is Sexy -- where we grab a glass of wine (or tea) and have a conversation online with a woman expert in different categories about what's going on in our lives. And right now, what most of us are thinking about (and likely stressing about) is the Coronavirus. We had a beautiful conversation with Licensed Mental Health Counselor Robin D. Stone, who helped us talk through how to manage stress and anxiety during these times; how to breathe through it all; and how to do what we need to do to feel good. Women on the call were also able to ask THEIR questions. It was exactly what was wanted and needed in this moment.

728: How Miss Jessie's Co-Founder Miko Branch Built Her Haircare Company from Scratch Apr 10, 2020
    Show notes

When she was younger, Miko Branch had a secret fantasy of opening a pink-decorated salon, although her parents had other career aspirations in mind for her. At age 25, Miko made that dream a reality, and ran her own salon out of the Brooklyn apartment she shared with her sister, Titi. In 1997, with her sister's encouragement, Miko opened a storefront salon despite her own fears about expanding. Though some of those fears may have been realized when the sisters later lost their first salon business due to what Miko calls some rookie business mistakes, a combination of their resilience, the influence of their strong-willed southern grandmother, Jessie Mae Branch, an aha moment while bathing her young son and a determination to create a hair care products that suited their textures and their lives would change the path of Miss Jessie's granddaughters forever.

On this Throwback Thursday episode of the Support is Sexy podcast, Miko, who Co-Founder and CEO of Miss Jessie's — one of the natural haircare industry's leading brands — talks to about rookie mistakes, aha moments, the power of sharing secrets with your customers, the dangers of growing too quickly and how to recover from marketing missteps. Plus, she opens up about losing her sister, Titi, in 2014 and how that experience has affected her commitment to her own mental wellness and to spreading that message of mental health awareness to others.

Special Episode: Dr. Khadeja Johnson's YouTube Video is a Powerful Plea for You to Stay Home During the Coronavirus COVID-19 Apr 03, 2020
    Show notes

Three weeks ago when things started to get really real with the Coronavirus COVID-19, I was feeling sort of helpless. Like many, I didn't know what I could do to help others in the world who were facing this pandemic — which all of us are in different ways, yet in the same ways. It was — and still is — confusing, not knowing what information to trust, but wanting to do all the right things to keep yourself, your family, your loved ones and your neighbors safe.

Dr. Khadeja Johnson's YouTube video gave me hope. In a heartfelt and at times tearful plea, Dr. Johnson — who is board certified in Internal Medicine and has over 14 years of service to Morehouse School of Medicine and Grady Memorial Hospital in Atlanta, GA, — sat in her home, turned on her camera, and implored us all to stay home. She explained that this was truly a matter of saving lives — yours, others and the healthcare workers on which we all depend. And she shared the scary-yet-necessary conversation she had to have with her son about what happens if mommy doesn't come home. Still it gave me hope. Perhaps because I felt like hers was a face and a voice I had yet to see featured in all the news I'd been watching. She was going to reach more people. A doctor, but also a mom, to whom many of us as women would be able to relate.

I reached out to Dr. KJ, as she is called, immediately and asked her if she'd be open to coming on one of my video chats that I recently started doing "Wine Down Conversations" that I host Thursday evenings at 8pm EST. These are conversations I began to do with women who have expertise in areas that will support us all as we work to survive and heal and take care of ourselves through this shared crisis. (My way of helping.) She said yes, and this special episode of the Support is Sexy podcast is that conversation.

We talk about the myths that still surround the Coronavirus COVID-19, why you really must stay home, how to speak to your parents about the disease, how Dr. KJ spoke to her young teenager about it and why, no matter what, you have to have the courage to use your voice.
