    Show notes

On episode 40 we delve into the life of a comedy great via the 2010 documentary, Joan Rivers: A Piece Of Work. Thanks to an internship, our guest Julia Prescott was able to bring her mom to the 2009 Comedy Central Roast of Joan Rivers! Paco and George talk to Julia about writing (for animated shows like The Aquabats and Future-Worm!), historical roasting, Kathy Griffin, QVC credibility, and family. We compare everything to The Simpsons because that's just what Julia does! Joan Rivers: A Piece Of Work premiered at the 2010 Sundance Film Festival where it won the US Documentary Prize for Best Editing. Directors Ricki Stern and Annie Sundberg follow 75-year-old Joan Rivers for a year of work, what Joan knows and does the best. A compelling portrait of an aging icon who still has the thirst to kill on stage. http://www.joanriversapieceofwork.com/ Julia Prescott is a writer and stand-up comedian from North Hollywood, CA. She's written for Cartoon Network, Nickelodeon, Disney, Nerdist, VICE, Geek & Sundry, and more. 38 - ROOM 237/THE NIGHTMARE director Rodney Ascher (Part 1) Sep 05, 2016
    Show notes

Part 1 of a 2-Part interview - You wake up in the middle of night, unable to move and see a shadow standing over your bed. Is this a bad dream or something far more sinister? Was Kubrick’s The Shining more that just a scary movie? Director Rodney Ascher joins SUP DOC to talk about sock puppets, Marilyn Manson and what led him to him to direct the conspiracy-fueled Room 237 & his personal reasons to create the bone-chilling doc The Nightmare. Room 237 is a subjective documentary that explores the numerous theories about the hidden meanings within Stanley Kubrick’s film The Shining (1980). The film may be over 30 years old but it continues to inspire debate, speculation, and mystery. Five very different points of view are illuminated through voice over, film clips, animation and dramatic reenactments. Together they’ll draw the audience into a new maze, one with endless detours and dead ends, many ways in, but no way out.

The Nightmare is a 2015 American documentary film directed by Rodney Ascher. The film had its world premiere on January 26, 2015 at the 2015 Sundance Film Festival and focuses on the topic of sleep paralysis. Ascher chose his subject because it had happened to him in the past. The documentary focuses on eight people suffering from sleep paralysis, a phenomenon where people find themselves temporarily unable to move, speak, or react to anything while they are falling asleep or awakening. Occasionally this paralysis will be accompanied by physical experiences or hallucinations that have the potential to terrify the individual. In the film, Ascher interviews each participant and then tries to re-create their experiences on film with professional actors. Rodney Ascher is a filmmaker whose feature debut, the ‘subjective documentary’ Room 237 premiered at Sundance, travelled the world, and annoyed Stephen King. His new film ‘The Nightmare” was called The Scariest Movie of the decade”, which isn’t exactly true but looks great on the cover of the DVD. In a previous lifetime he directed short experimental documentaries, arguably comedic shorts, and a couple of music videos. He lives in a fast-gentrifying neighborhood in Los Angeles with his talented wife, a beautiful cat, and a six year old boy with a special interest in the sinking of the Bismarck.

    37 - FINDING VIVIAN MAIER w Esther Ku Aug 22, 2016
    Show notes

On Ep 37 Paco and George welcome comedian and actress Esther Ku to talk about the riveting 2013 doc Finding Vivian Maier. They also discuss Esther's childhood, her start in the Boston comedy scene and her recent work on Family Guy. Maier was a French-American woman who worked most of her life as a nanny and housekeeper to a multitude of Chicago families. She carried a camera everywhere she went, but Maier's photographic legacy was largely unknown during her lifetime. She died in 2009. The film documents how Maloof discovered her work and, after her death, uncovered her life through interviews with people who knew her. Maloof had purchased a box of photo negatives at a 2007 Chicago auction, then scanned the images and put them on the Internet. She is now considered one of the greatest 20th Century photographers. Esther Ku is a Korean-American stand-up comedian, television personality, and actress. Ku was a cast member on the MTV show Girl Code and Wild 'N Out. Ku was chosen as one of the ten best comedians for the 2006 NBC Stand-up for Diversity Showcase in New York City. Ku has also been a featured regular performer in the Boston International Comedy Festival and the New York Underground Festival. She has been called "the Asian Sarah Silverman". **Sup Doc has created a Patreon page for those that can help out. We will also be providing unique Sup Doc content for our contributors. 36 - GLENN CAMPBELL: I'LL BE ME w Wimps Aug 08, 2016
    Show notes

Paco and George are joined by Seattle band Wimps to discuss the 2014 Glenn Campbell documentary, I'll Be Me by James Keach. Matt, Rachel, and Dave were moved for personal and professional reasons by the story of the final tour of country star Glenn Campbell, who was diagnosed with Alzheimer's in 2011. We talk about speech pathology, touring history, family, 7 stages of Alzheimer's, and memory strategies. The Washington Post's Ann Hornaday wrote that " 'I’ll Be Me' is an elevating experience, inviting the audience to bear witness to Campbell’s courage, humor and spiritual strength. His story may make for a tough movie, but it’s an important and triumphant one, as well." Seattle's Wimps is a three-piece comprised of scene veterans Rachel Ratner (Butts) on guitar and lead vocals, Matt Nyce (Meth Teeth) on bass and backing vocals, and Dave Ramm (The Intelligence) on drums. Wimps serve their own brand of rapid-fire punk with a smattering of lo-fi post punk guitar work to create an angular, slightly off-kilter blast. Ratner lyrically twists otherwise common day-to-day woes into relatable tales of struggle shout-sung call and response stabs that champion boredom, laziness and social anxieties with wiry riffs and punchy bass lines, propelled by the measured rhythms of drummer David Ramm. In 2015 they partnered with Kill Rock Stars and released a cassette and their sophomore album ‘Suitcase’ to praise from places like Noisey, Nerdist, AV Club, Exclaim, Norman Records, the Stranger, and more. http://www.killrockstars.com/artists/wimps **Sup Doc has created a Patreon page for those that can help out.
