Reinventing Yourself in the ’80s | Author Suzanne Mattaboni Discusses Once in a Lifetime Aug 01, 2023
    Show notes

If you grew up in the 1980s, chances are you've imagined it at least once.

    A summer where everything changed.

A summer where you became a different version of yourself. More confident. More adventurous. Maybe even cooler. A summer where the right song came on the radio at exactly the right moment and suddenly your entire life seemed full of possibility.

That's the heart of Once in a Lifetime, the new novel from author Suzanne Mattaboni.

This week on the Stuck in the ’80s podcast, Suzanne joins Spearsy to discuss the book, her enduring affection for the decade and the inspiration behind a story that captures both the nostalgia and emotional truth of growing up during the MTV era.

The conversation explores why the 1980s remain such fertile ground for storytelling. Beyond the music, movies and fashion, the decade represented a time when many Gen Xers were discovering who they wanted to become. That sense of possibility remains a powerful theme in both fiction and memory.

Suzanne discusses how Once in a Lifetime came together and how the idea of personal reinvention became central to the story. Whether it's changing your appearance, chasing a dream or simply deciding to take a different path, the desire to reinvent ourselves is something nearly everyone can relate to.

Along the way, Spearsy and Suzanne revisit some of the cultural touchstones that helped shape the decade, from music and movies to the everyday experiences that made the 1980s feel unique. Those details help bring the book's setting to life while creating a familiar backdrop for readers who lived through the era.

The discussion also examines why nostalgia fiction continues attracting passionate audiences. While readers may arrive for the references and memories, they stay for the characters and emotional journeys that feel timeless regardless of the decade.

Like many Stuck in the ’80s interviews with authors, the conversation blends storytelling, personal memories and pop culture while celebrating creative works inspired by the decade we all love.

Whether you remember your own life-changing summer or simply enjoy stories about second chances and self-discovery, this episode offers plenty to enjoy.

After all, sometimes one summer really can change everything.

If you love nostalgic fiction, coming-of-age stories and revisiting the sights and sounds of the 1980s, this episode belongs in your playlist.

AI in the ’80s | The Movies That Predicted Our Computer-Controlled Future Jul 24, 2023
    Show notes

Everybody's talking about AI these days.

Artificial intelligence is writing articles, generating images, answering questions and inspiring both excitement and panic depending on who you ask.

But here's the thing: for Gen X, none of this feels entirely new.

We've been thinking about AI since the 1980s.

This week on the Stuck in the ’80s podcast, Steve and Brad revisit the decade's most memorable artificial-intelligence movies and explore how filmmakers imagined our computer-driven future long before most people had even touched a personal computer.

The discussion begins with TRON, one of the decade's most ambitious and visually groundbreaking films. At a time when most audiences barely understood what computers could do, TRON invited viewers inside a digital world populated by programs, artificial beings and electronic battles that felt decades ahead of their time.

From there, the gang dives into Blade Runner, whose replicants forced audiences to wrestle with questions that still feel relevant today. If an artificial being can think, feel and dream, what truly separates it from a human?

Of course, no AI discussion would be complete without The Terminator. Thanks to Skynet, an entire generation grew up believing that giving too much power to computers might eventually result in killer robots and the end of civilization. Looking back, it remains one of the most influential cautionary tales ever put on film.

Along the way, Steve and Brad revisit other 1980s movies that explored artificial intelligence, sentient machines, computer networks and digital consciousness. Some presented optimistic visions of technology. Others imagined futures that looked considerably darker.

What's fascinating is how many of these films got certain things right. While we're still waiting for killer cyborgs and glowing digital arenas, questions about machine learning, automation, digital identity and human dependence on technology have become central issues in everyday life.

The episode also explores why the 1980s seemed uniquely fascinated by computers and artificial intelligence. As personal computers entered homes and workplaces for the first time, filmmakers found themselves imagining possibilities that ranged from miraculous to catastrophic.

Like many Stuck in the ’80s movie episodes, the discussion combines nostalgia, film history and a healthy appreciation for just how weird and imaginative the decade could be.

The result is a reminder that long before AI became a real-world technology, it was already one of the most fascinating characters in 1980s pop culture.

If you love science fiction, classic movies and discovering how the 1980s predicted the future, this episode belongs in your playlist.

Reviewing Netflix’s WHAM! | The Story of Wham! Jul 10, 2023
    Show notes

Sometimes a documentary reminds you how much you loved an artist.

And sometimes it reminds you that you loved them even more than you realized.

That's exactly what happened when Spearsy, Brad and Jen with One N sat down to watch WHAM!, Netflix's affectionate and entertaining look back at the career of Wham!.

This week on the Stuck in the ’80s podcast, the gang reviews the documentary and discovers that they may have been bigger Wham! fans than they ever admitted.

The film chronicles the extraordinary rise of childhood friends George Michael and Andrew Ridgeley, who transformed themselves from ambitious teenagers into one of the defining pop acts of the MTV era. Through archival footage, personal photos and the duo's own reflections, the documentary captures both the excitement of their success and the genuine friendship that powered it.

The discussion revisits many of the songs that made Wham! a global phenomenon, including Wake Me Up Before You Go-Go, Everything She Wants, Freedom and Careless Whisper. Looking back, it's easy to see how quickly George Michael evolved from pop idol into one of the most gifted singers and songwriters of his generation.

But one of the documentary's greatest strengths is its treatment of Andrew Ridgeley. Rather than presenting him merely as the other guy in the band, the film highlights the important role he played in the group's formation, success and eventual legacy.

Along the way, Spearsy, Brad and Jen discuss how Wham! managed to balance infectious pop hooks, remarkable musicianship and genuine charisma in a way few groups ever achieve. What initially seemed like lightweight pop music often reveals surprising depth upon closer examination.

The conversation also explores why the documentary resonates so strongly today. Beyond the music, it's a story about friendship, ambition and two young people chasing a dream together before the realities of fame inevitably changed the equation.

Like many Stuck in the ’80s review episodes, the discussion mixes nostalgia, humor and newfound appreciation for a cultural phenomenon that deserves another look.

And yes, Jen's return is every bit as welcome as the soundtrack.

If you love music documentaries, MTV memories and rediscovering one of the most successful pop acts of the 1980s, this episode belongs in your playlist.

Mark A. Altman on ‘1982: Greatest Geek Year Ever,’ ’80s Sci-Fi and Geek Culture Jul 02, 2023
    Show notes

For science-fiction fans, movie geeks and Gen X pop culture obsessives, few years loom larger than 1982. It was a moment when Hollywood unleashed an astonishing run of ambitious genre films that would influence generations of filmmakers, writers and fans. This week on the Stuck in the ’80s Podcast, Spearsy welcomes writer and producer Mark A. Altman to discuss the new CW documentary 1982: Greatest Geek Year Ever and revisit one of the most important eras in science-fiction and fantasy movie history.

During the interview, Altman reflects on why 1982 became such a landmark year for genre storytelling, producing influential films that reshaped science fiction, fantasy and horror cinema during the early MTV era. The conversation explores how practical effects, ambitious storytelling and groundbreaking visual design helped create movies that still feel imaginative and emotionally powerful decades later.

Spearsy and Altman also revisit the larger culture of ’80s geekdom — from comic books and VHS collecting to convention culture and the rise of obsessive fandom long before social media existed. Along the way, Altman shares stories about his own career, including his cult 1999 comedy Free Enterprise, a fan-favorite movie that blended science-fiction fandom, comedy and existential Gen X anxiety into something uniquely personal and self-aware.

The conversation naturally turns toward Star Trek and Altman’s long-running podcast “Inglorious Treksperts,” where he and fellow fans dive deep into Trek history, production stories and the enduring impact of classic science-fiction television and film. Spearsy and Altman discuss how fandom itself evolved from a niche hobby into a dominant force in modern entertainment culture.

If you love ’80s sci-fi movies, geek culture, cult films, Star Trek history and revisiting the creative explosion that defined genre entertainment during the early 1980s, this episode belongs in your playlist.

Close But No Cigar: The Final Chapter | The Last Great No. 2 Hits of the ’80s Jun 25, 2023
    Show notes

Every great series eventually reaches its finale.

And this week, one of the longest-running and most beloved music features in Stuck in the ’80s history takes its final bow.

Steve welcomes back Chuck Coverly and B-Rad for the concluding chapter of Close But No Cigar, our ongoing celebration of songs that climbed all the way to No. 2 on the charts but never managed to claim the top spot.

For years, this series has reminded us that chart success isn't always measured by a No. 1 ranking. Some of the most memorable songs of the MTV era spent their entire careers staring up at the summit from one spot below.

This final installment focuses on the closing years of the decade and features music from artists such as Tears for Fears, New Kids on the Block, The Cure and several other chart giants whose songs somehow fell just short of reaching No. 1.

As always, the fun comes from revisiting the mysteries of chart history. What song kept these tracks from reaching the top? Did the better record actually lose? And how many of these so-called runner-up songs ultimately became more beloved than the hits that blocked them?

Along the way, Steve, Chuck and Brad reflect on the remarkable diversity of late-'80s music. By the end of the decade, radio playlists had become a fascinating mix of new wave, pop, rock, alternative music and teen-pop sensations, all competing for chart dominance.

The episode also serves as a fitting farewell to a series that consistently uncovered hidden stories behind familiar songs. Time and again, Close But No Cigar proved that chart position alone doesn't determine a record's legacy. Many of these No. 2 songs remain staples of classic hits radio while some of the No. 1 songs that defeated them have largely faded from memory.

Like many Stuck in the ’80s music-history episodes, the conversation blends nostalgia, chart trivia and passionate debate. But this time there's also a touch of bittersweet reflection as the gang says goodbye to a feature that has produced countless great discoveries over the years.

The result feels a little like saying goodbye to the decade itself — a gentle landing after a long and entertaining journey through some of the greatest music ever recorded.

If you've followed Close But No Cigar from the beginning, this episode serves as a satisfying finale. And if you're new to the series, it's a perfect reminder that sometimes second place can still produce first-rate music.

The Stuck in the ’80s Podcast has spent nearly 20 years celebrating the music, movies, television and pop culture of the greatest decade ever. Support the show on Patreon for bonus episodes, exclusive livestream hangouts, behind-the-scenes content and merch for longtime listeners.

One of the things we love most about hosting trivia aboard The 80s Cruise is discovering just how deep everyone's music knowledge runs. Somebody always remembers the forgotten hit, the obscure B-side or the song that peaked at No. 2 back in 1989. If episodes like this are your jam, you'll find your people onboard. The Best and Worst Movie Dads of the ’80s | A Father’s Day Special Jun 18, 2023
    Show notes

If there's one thing 1980s movies taught us, it's that being a dad was complicated.

Some fathers offered wisdom and guidance. Others communicated almost entirely through yelling. Many seemed completely baffled by their own children. And yet somehow, despite all their flaws, a surprising number of them genuinely cared.

This week on the Stuck in the ’80s podcast, we're bringing back a favorite episode from 2019 that's perfectly timed for Father's Day. Brad, Jen with One N and Steve revisit some of the most memorable movie dads of the decade and try to determine which ones got parenting right — and which ones definitely did not.

The discussion covers a wide range of father figures from across the 1980s movie landscape. Some are beloved characters who offered tough love and valuable life lessons. Others may have had good intentions but employed parenting techniques that would probably trigger several family interventions today.

Part of what makes these characters so interesting is how accurately many of them reflected the parenting styles of the era. The fathers of 1980s cinema often weren't particularly good at expressing their emotions. They weren't always comfortable discussing feelings. Sometimes they seemed incapable of having a normal conversation with their children.

And yet many of those relationships still resonate because they feel authentic.

Along the way, the gang shares personal memories, favorite scenes and plenty of laughs while examining how Hollywood portrayed fathers during the MTV era. Some of the characters have aged surprisingly well. Others feel very much like products of a different time.

The conversation also takes a more emotional turn as the hosts reflect on the ways these fictional fathers connected with their own lives and families. Beneath the jokes and movie references lies a thoughtful discussion about what it means to be a parent and how those relationships shape us.

Like many Stuck in the ’80s episodes, the result is equal parts nostalgia, humor and heartfelt reflection.

Because for every overbearing father, clueless dad or emotionally unavailable patriarch in an '80s movie, there was usually a deeper story about family, forgiveness and doing the best you can with the tools you've been given.

If you grew up watching 1980s movies, chances are some of these dads helped shape your understanding of fatherhood — for better or worse.

One of our favorite things about The 80s Cruise is watching generations connect over shared memories. Whether it's a favorite song, a beloved movie or a conversation about the dads who raised us, those connections happen everywhere onboard. Use promo code STUCK when booking your cabin and join us for a week filled with music, laughter and the kind of friendships that start with, "Hey, remember that movie?"

The Top 10 Dance Movies of the ’80s | From Fame to Footloose Jun 13, 2023
    Show notes

If the 1980s taught us anything, it's this:

When life gets complicated, the solution is often to settle things with a dance number.

Need to escape your small town? Dance.

Need to impress your friends? Dance.

Need to win a competition, overcome adversity or discover your true self? Definitely dance.

This week on the Stuck in the ’80s podcast, we're revisiting a fan-favorite episode from the summer of 2021 as Steve, Jen with One N and Gayle in DC count down their picks for the Top 10 dance movies of the 1980s.

It turns out our beloved decade wasn't just a great era for music videos. It was also a golden age for dance films, producing some of the most memorable movie moments ever committed to film.

The discussion begins with classics like Fame, the movie that helped launch a decade-long fascination with performers chasing their dreams through hard work, talent and impressive choreography. The gang also revisits Footloose, the ultimate story of rebellion through dance and one of the defining cultural touchstones of the MTV era.

Along the way, the conversation celebrates films such as Girls Just Want to Have Fun, which remains one of the most charming and underrated dance movies of the decade, along with Tap, a film that showcased extraordinary talent while helping preserve one of America's great dance traditions.

Of course, narrowing an entire decade's worth of dance movies down to just ten selections isn't easy. The hosts debate rankings, defend favorites and revisit the scenes, performances and soundtracks that made these films so unforgettable.

The episode also highlights how dance movies occupied a unique place in 1980s culture. Long before TikTok trends and viral choreography, these films inspired audiences to hit the dance floor, sign up for lessons or simply spend hours practicing moves in front of the bedroom mirror.

Like many Stuck in the ’80s movie episodes, the discussion combines nostalgia, pop-culture history and plenty of friendly disagreement. Everyone has a favorite dance movie. The fun comes from arguing about where it belongs on the list.

Whether you were inspired by Kevin Bacon, Sarah Jessica Parker or the students at New York City's High School of Performing Arts, there's a good chance one of these films helped define your relationship with music and dance.

If you love movie soundtracks, iconic dance scenes and revisiting the films that taught us to cut loose, this episode belongs in your playlist.

One thing we've learned from hosting events aboard The 80s Cruise is that '80s fans never need much encouragement to get up and dance. Whether it's a late-night concert, a theme-party dance floor or an impromptu singalong in the ship's atrium, the music never really stops. Use promo code STUCK when booking your cabin and come experience a week where the soundtrack of your youth is played live every single day.

Big Hair, Big Riffs and Big Trivia | Ron and Don Higgins Discuss The Biggest Big Hair Book of Metal Trivia Jun 05, 2023
    Show notes

The 1980s gave us many things.

Synthesizers. New wave. MTV. John Hughes movies.

But it also gave us towering stacks of Marshall amplifiers, guitar solos that seemed to last forever and enough hairspray to damage the ozone layer.

This week on the Stuck in the ’80s podcast, Steve welcomes authors Ron and Don Higgins to discuss their new book, The Biggest Big Hair Book of Metal Trivia, a deep dive into the music, personalities and outrageous stories that defined the era of hair metal and hard rock.

For fans of bands like Mötley Crüe, Poison, Ratt, Cinderella and countless others, the book serves as both a trivia collection and a love letter to one of the most entertaining periods in rock history.

The Higgins brothers discuss how the project came together and share some of their favorite discoveries while researching the book. Along the way, listeners are treated to stories about the artists, albums and backstage antics that helped make the genre so unforgettable.

Of course, no conversation about big-hair rock would be complete without talking about KISS. The discussion includes plenty of KISS memories and observations about a band whose influence can be seen throughout the hard-rock landscape of the 1980s.

The episode also explores why hair metal continues attracting devoted fans decades after its commercial peak. While critics sometimes dismissed the genre, the music's combination of huge hooks, memorable choruses and unapologetic fun has proven remarkably durable.

Like many Stuck in the ’80s interviews, the conversation balances nostalgia, music history and plenty of laughter. Whether you're the type of fan who can identify every guitarist who ever played the Sunset Strip or someone who simply misses the days when every music video looked like a party, there's plenty to enjoy.

The result is a reminder that the 1980s weren't just loud — they were gloriously loud.

And sometimes that's exactly what we need.

If you love hard rock, metal trivia, arena anthems and revisiting one of the most over-the-top eras in music history, this episode belongs in your playlist.

One of the great things about The 80s Cruise is that every musical tribe has a home onboard. The Satanic Panic of the ’80s | Devil Songs, Horror Movies and Gen X Moral Panic May 28, 2023
    Show notes

The 1980s gave us arcade games, MTV, heavy metal, slasher movies and one of the strangest moral panics in modern American history: the Satanic Panic. During the decade, parents, politicians, televangelists and talk shows became convinced that hidden satanic messages were lurking everywhere — in rock music, role-playing games, horror films and even children’s toys. This week on the Stuck in the ’80s Podcast, Steve, Brad and a very unusual guest co-host celebrate Episode 666 with a deep dive into devil music, satanic scares and the bizarre cultural paranoia that helped define parts of the MTV era.

The episode counts down six unforgettable songs about the devil, six classic movies tied to satanic themes and six outrageous headlines from the 1980s that captured the fear and hysteria of the Satanic Panic years. Along the way, the gang revisits the controversy surrounding heavy metal bands, backward masking conspiracy theories, televangelist warnings and the strange belief that pop culture itself was secretly corrupting America’s youth.

From Black Sabbath and Iron Maiden to horror films like The Omen and Rosemary's Baby, the episode explores how satanic imagery became a permanent part of ’80s entertainment culture. Steve and Brad also reflect on the era of sensational TV specials, daytime talk show panic and rumors about hidden messages in rock albums that spread through schools, churches and suburban neighborhoods across America.

The conversation also revisits how the Satanic Panic influenced everything from music censorship and the PMRC hearings to Dungeons & Dragons fears and the rise of “video nasties” in horror culture. Like so many strange parts of the 1980s, the entire phenomenon now feels equal parts hilarious, fascinating and deeply surreal in retrospect.

If you love ’80s horror movies, heavy metal nostalgia, weird pop culture history, true-crime-style media hysteria and revisiting the strangest corners of Gen X culture, this episode belongs in your playlist.

    Summer Movies Showdown | 1979 vs. 1989 May 26, 2023
    Show notes

There was a time when summer movies felt like a season all their own.

You studied newspaper listings. You watched trailers over and over again. You gathered friends, bought popcorn and spent entire afternoons escaping into air-conditioned theaters.

For many Gen Xers, the late 1970s and 1980s represented the golden age of the summer blockbuster.

That's why this week on the Stuck in the ’80s podcast, we're revisiting one of our favorite episodes as the gang compares two iconic movie summers: 1979 and 1989.

    The premise is simple.

Take the films released during the summer of 1979. Put them up against the movies released during the summer of 1989. Then spend an hour arguing about which lineup was better.

    What could possibly go wrong?

The discussion explores how both years arrived at fascinating moments in movie history. The summer of 1979 showcased Hollywood as it was learning the power of the blockbuster era that had been launched just a few years earlier. By contrast, 1989 represented a fully mature blockbuster machine, producing some of the most commercially successful and culturally influential films of the decade.

Along the way, Steve and company revisit the movies, stars and unforgettable moments that defined each summer. The debate isn't just about which films were bigger hits. It's about cultural impact, lasting influence, rewatchability and pure entertainment value.

The episode also serves as a reminder of how much the moviegoing experience has changed. Before streaming services, social media and endless entertainment options, summer movies occupied a central place in popular culture. Everybody saw the same films. Everybody quoted the same lines. And everybody had strong opinions about which movie ruled the season.

Like many Stuck in the ’80s movie episodes, the conversation quickly becomes equal parts nostalgia, trivia and friendly argument. Nobody's mind is completely changed, but that's never really the point.

The point is celebrating the movies that helped define our summers.

And both 1979 and 1989 delivered plenty of those.

Whether your heart belongs to the tail end of the disco era or the final summer before the 1990s arrived, this episode offers a fun trip back to two remarkable years at the multiplex.

If you miss the days when summer blockbusters felt like shared cultural events, this episode belongs in your playlist.

One thing we've discovered on The 80s Cruise is that movie conversations never really end.
