Holly Knight on Writing the Soundtrack of the MTV Era Jan 11, 2023
    Show notes

If you made a mixtape in the 1980s, chances are good that Holly Knight helped write part of its soundtrack. As one of the most successful songwriters of the MTV era, Knight created or co-created some of the decade’s most unforgettable rock and pop anthems — songs that still echo through classic-rock radio, movie soundtracks and Gen X memory decades later. This week on the Stuck in the ’80s Podcast, Spearsy talks with the Songwriters Hall of Fame member about her memoir I Am the Warrior: My Crazy Life Writing the Hits and Rocking the MTV Eighties and the incredible stories behind the music.

During the interview, Holly reflects on the creative explosion of the 1980s and the experience of writing hit songs during one of the most exciting periods in music history. From arena rock and power ballads to MTV-ready pop anthems, Knight’s songwriting helped shape the emotional soundscape of the decade. Spearsy and Holly discuss the process of writing songs that became deeply tied to memories of growing up during the MTV generation.

The conversation also explores Holly’s collaborations with some of the biggest artists of the era, including Pat Benatar, Heart, Tina Turner and Cheap Trick. Along the way, Holly shares stories about the music industry during the height of MTV, the challenge of balancing commercial success with artistic identity and the thrill of hearing songs become cultural touchstones almost overnight.

Spearsy and Holly also discuss her memoir, which offers an honest and often funny look at fame, creativity, sexism in the music business and the chaotic energy of the 1980s entertainment world. Like many great music memoirs, I Am the Warrior: My Crazy Life Writing the Hits and Rocking the MTV Eighties becomes not just the story of one songwriter, but a larger portrait of the decade itself.

If you love ’80s music, songwriting history, MTV nostalgia and behind-the-scenes stories from the artists who created the soundtrack of Gen X life, this episode belongs in your playlist.

Revisiting Willow | The Movie, the Magic and the Disney+ Series Dec 30, 2022
    Show notes

"There is a peck here with an acorn pointed at me."

If you recognize that reference, you're probably exactly the kind of person who will enjoy this week's episode.

Steve and Brad return to one of the most beloved fantasy films of the late 1980s as they revisit Willow and compare it with the more recent Disney+ series that brought the story back to life for a new generation.

Released in 1988, Willow arrived during a golden age of fantasy filmmaking. Conceived by George Lucas and directed by Ron Howard, the film combined adventure, humor, magic and heart into a story that developed a devoted following over the decades.

At its center was Warwick Davis as Willow Ufgood, an unlikely hero tasked with protecting a special child destined to change the fate of the world. Alongside him was one of the great rogues of 1980s fantasy cinema, Madmartigan, played with irresistible charisma by Val Kilmer.

The discussion revisits many of the film's memorable moments, from epic battles and magical transformations to some of the funniest lines in fantasy-movie history. Decades later, Willow remains a favorite among fans who grew up during the era when fantasy adventures ruled the multiplex.

Of course, the episode doesn't stop with the original film.

Steve and Brad also examine the Disney+ series that returned audiences to the world of Willow. The conversation explores what the show gets right, how it expands the mythology and whether it captures the spirit that made the original movie so beloved.

Like many Stuck in the ’80s movie reviews, the discussion balances nostalgia with a fresh perspective. Some aspects of Willow have aged remarkably well. Others reflect the filmmaking styles and storytelling conventions of the era. Together, they help explain why the movie continues attracting new fans more than three decades after its release.

The result is a celebration of one of the most charming fantasy adventures of the MTV era and a thoughtful look at its modern successor.

If you grew up quoting Madmartigan, cheering for Willow or secretly wishing you had your own magic wand, this episode belongs in your playlist.

One thing we've learned from years of hosting trivia aboard The 80s Cruise is that fantasy fans travel in packs. Life Lessons from the ’80s | Author Chris Clews Discusses Raised on the '80s Dec 11, 2022
    Show notes

For a generation raised on MTV, John Hughes movies and shopping malls, the 1980s were more than just entertainment.

    They were an education.

We may not have realized it at the time, but many of the movies, songs and cultural moments we absorbed during the decade ended up shaping the way we view friendship, success, resilience, creativity and life itself.

This week on the Stuck in the ’80s podcast, author Chris Clews returns to the show to discuss his latest book, Raised on the '80s: 30+ Unexpected Life Lessons from the Movies and Music That Defined Pop Culture's Most Excellent Decade.

Chris has built a career around examining the connections between popular culture and personal development, and his newest book continues that exploration by uncovering the surprising wisdom hidden within some of the decade's most iconic entertainment.

The conversation explores how movies, music and television often teach lessons without us realizing it. Sometimes those lessons are obvious. Other times they reveal themselves only years later, when we look back and recognize how deeply certain stories or songs influenced our thinking.

Along the way, Chris and Steve revisit some of the defining cultural touchstones of the 1980s and discuss why they continue resonating decades after their original release. Whether it's a favorite movie character overcoming adversity or a song delivering an unexpected message about life, the decade remains full of moments that still feel relevant today.

The discussion also touches on why nostalgia remains such a powerful force. While many people revisit the 1980s for comfort and familiarity, Chris argues that there is also genuine value in examining the ideas, themes and lessons embedded within the entertainment we loved.

Like many Stuck in the ’80s author interviews, the episode moves beyond simple nostalgia and explores how popular culture becomes part of our personal story. The movies and music of our youth don't just entertain us. They help shape who we become.

And for many Gen Xers, the 1980s provided an especially rich collection of teachers.

Some of them just happened to wear denim jackets and have really great soundtracks.

If you've ever found yourself applying a lesson learned from a movie, quoting song lyrics during a difficult moment or realizing that an old favorite still has something meaningful to say, this episode belongs in your playlist.

The Stuck in the ’80s Podcast has spent nearly 20 years celebrating the music, movies, television and pop culture of the greatest decade ever. Support the show on Patreon for bonus episodes, exclusive livestream hangouts, behind-the-scenes content and merch for longtime listeners.

One of the reasons The 80s Cruise feels so special is that it reminds us how deeply these songs, movies and memories are woven into our lives. Spend a few days onboard and you'll hear countless stories about a favorite album, a life-changing concert or a movie that helped someone through a difficult time. Reviewing A Christmas Story Christmas | Does Ralphie Still Have the Magic? Dec 02, 2022
    Show notes

    Some movies don't need sequels.

And some movies practically dare Hollywood to try.

This week on the Stuck in the ’80s podcast, Steve and Brad take a closer look at A Christmas Story Christmas, the sequel to the beloved holiday favorite A Christmas Story.

The premise is simple enough. Ralphie Parker has grown up.

    Really.

After decades of reruns, leg lamps and endless recitations of "You'll shoot your eye out," audiences finally get the chance to revisit the Parker family through the eyes of an adult Ralphie, once again played by Peter Billingsley.

Naturally, that raises an important question:

Can any sequel possibly live up to one of the most cherished Christmas movies of all time?

Steve and Brad dive into the film's strengths, weaknesses and nostalgic callbacks while examining whether it successfully captures the tone that made the original so memorable.

Part of the challenge facing the sequel is that A Christmas Story has become much more than a movie. For many families, it's an annual holiday tradition. Its characters, scenes and quotes have become woven into the fabric of Christmas itself.

That's a lot of history to live up to.

The discussion explores how A Christmas Story Christmas balances fan service with new storytelling, revisits familiar locations and characters, and attempts to create a meaningful story of its own rather than simply recycling old jokes.

Along the way, Steve and Brad discuss which callbacks work best, which moments feel earned and whether the film successfully recreates the emotional heart that made the original resonate across generations.

Like many Stuck in the ’80s movie reviews, the conversation combines nostalgia, humor and honest criticism. The gang clearly loves the original film, which makes the evaluation of the sequel all the more interesting.

The result is a thoughtful look at one of the more surprising legacy sequels to emerge from Hollywood's recent nostalgia wave.

And yes, there may be a few triple-dog dares along the way.

If you've ever watched a 24-hour marathon of A Christmas Story, admired a leg lamp or wondered what became of Ralphie Parker, this episode belongs in your playlist.

One of the best things about The 80s Cruise is discovering how many seemingly random pop-culture touchstones we all share. Mention a leg lamp, a Red Ryder BB gun or a tongue stuck to a frozen pole, and suddenly everyone has a story. That's what makes the cruise so much fun: thousands of Gen Xers speaking the same cultural language. 40 Years of Thriller | Revisiting the Album That Changed Pop Music Forever Nov 24, 2022
    Show notes

Can it really be 40 years?

For many of us, it feels like just yesterday.

One minute we were watching music videos after school, trying to learn the dance moves and debating which song was our favorite. The next thing we knew, Thriller had become something much larger than an album.

    It became an event.

This week on the Stuck in the ’80s podcast, Steve and Brad celebrate the 40th anniversary of Thriller and revisit the record that helped define not only the decade but the entire history of popular music.

Released in 1982, Thriller arrived at a moment when the music industry was already changing rapidly. What nobody could have predicted was just how thoroughly the album would reshape the landscape. The combination of groundbreaking production, unforgettable songs and revolutionary music videos created a cultural phenomenon unlike anything audiences had seen before.

The discussion revisits many of the album's legendary tracks, from Billie Jean and Beat It to Thriller itself. Each song seemed to take on a life of its own, dominating radio, MTV and popular culture for years.

Of course, no conversation about Thriller is complete without discussing the videos. At a time when MTV was still finding its footing, Michael Jackson and director John Landis helped elevate the music video from promotional tool to cinematic event. The Thriller short film remains one of the most recognizable pieces of pop culture ever created.

Along the way, Steve and Brad share memories of discovering the album and reflect on why it made such a profound impact on an entire generation of listeners. For many Gen Xers, Thriller wasn't just a collection of songs. It was the soundtrack to a specific moment in time.

The episode also examines the album's enduring legacy. Forty years later, its influence can still be heard in contemporary pop music, seen in music videos and felt throughout the entertainment industry.

Like many Stuck in the ’80s music episodes, the discussion combines personal memories, music history and a healthy appreciation for the rare cultural moments that transcend generations.

And make no mistake: Thriller was one of those moments.

Whether you bought the album on vinyl, cassette or CD, memorized every video frame or attempted the dance moves at a school party, chances are Thriller played a role in your 1980s experience.

If you love classic pop music, MTV history and revisiting one of the greatest albums ever recorded, this episode belongs in your playlist.

One thing we've learned from hosting events aboard The 80s Cruise is that certain songs instantly unite a room. The opening bass line of "Billie Jean." The first notes of "Beat It." Vincent Price's voice on "Thriller." Within seconds, complete strangers are singing together. That's the power of truly iconic music. Use promo code STUCK when booking your cabin and experience a week filled with the songs that still bring Gen X together decades later.

Same Name, Totally Different Song: Toto, Seger, Hall & Oates and More Nov 05, 2022
    Show notes

Coming up with a great song title can be difficult.

Or you can simply use one that another artist already used.

That happened constantly in the 1980s, when completely unrelated songs regularly arrived carrying identical names. Sometimes one became a massive hit while the other quietly disappeared. Sometimes both found an audience. And sometimes you hear the title today and have to pause before figuring out which song your brain is already playing.

That’s the idea behind our recurring Stuck in the ’80s series, “The Song (Title) Remains the Same.”

For every installment, we pair up songs that share a title and decide how much they actually have in common. Usually, the answer is very little. One might be a glossy pop single, another a dramatic power ballad and another something wonderfully strange that could only have escaped from the ’80s.

This week’s musical identity crisis brings together Toto, Bob Seger, Hall & Oates, Bonnie Tyler, Go West and Oingo Boingo.

That lineup alone takes us through several different neighborhoods of the decade. Toto delivers the studio-polished musicianship. Seger brings the road-worn sincerity. Hall & Oates arrive with hooks for days. Bonnie Tyler supplies the glorious drama. Go West gives us sleek mid-’80s pop, while Oingo Boingo can always be trusted to make things a little more eccentric.

The songs may have matching names, but that doesn’t mean they sound alike, tell the same story or inspire the same reaction. That’s where the fun begins.

Which song owns the title? Which version have you forgotten? And which one deserves another spin after all these years?

Join us for another round of duplicate titles, musical debates and the kind of ’80s trivia that will occupy valuable space in your brain for the rest of the week.

Take Your ’80s Obsession Out to Sea

Listening to Stuck in the ’80s is fun. Living inside an ’80s soundtrack for an entire week is even better.

Join us aboard The ’80s Cruise for live music, celebrity guests, theme nights, trivia, podcasts and thousands of fellow fans who understand why the opening seconds of the right song can instantly transport you back 40 years.

Close but No Cigar: The No. 2 Hits of 1988 — Part 3 Oct 31, 2022
    Show notes

Episode 649: There may be no lonelier number in pop music than No. 2.

Reaching the second spot on the charts means nearly everything went right. The song was everywhere. Radio embraced it. Fans bought it. MTV probably played the video often enough to permanently burn a few images into our memories.

But one other song stood in the way.

That’s the inspiration behind our recurring Stuck in the ’80s series, “Close but No Cigar,” in which we revisit the hits that climbed all the way to No. 2—but never took that final step to No. 1.

This week, we return to the wonderfully unpredictable musical landscape of 1988 for Part 3.

Apparently, two previous installments weren’t enough to contain all the songs that came within one position of chart immortality that year. Then again, 1988 was hardly a normal year for pop music.

The decade’s biggest stars were colliding with emerging new voices. Rock, dance music, R&B and glossy mainstream pop were all competing for the same radio airtime. Artists who had dominated the early ’80s were trying to remain relevant, while newer performers were elbowing their way onto MTV and into the Top 40.

Caught in the middle were our latest No. 2 finishers, including songs from Robert Palmer, Elton John, Pebbles and more.

Some of these records felt like No. 1 hits. In our memories, they may even seem bigger than whatever song technically occupied the top spot. Others capture a very specific moment in 1988—a time when musical tastes were changing quickly and a single week could separate a chart-topper from an eternal runner-up.

That’s what makes these songs so fascinating.

A No. 2 peak isn’t necessarily a judgment on quality. Sometimes it’s simply bad timing. Release the same song a few weeks earlier or later, and its chart history might look completely different.

Of course, history doesn’t offer do-overs. The record books say these songs never reached No. 1.

Our radios, mixtapes and memories may tell a different story.

Join us for Part 3 of the No. 2 hits of 1988, as we determine which songs were robbed, which ones probably finished exactly where they belonged and which supposed runners-up still sound like champions nearly four decades later.

Come Sail Away to the Actual ’80s

You can spend all day debating which song should have reached No. 1—or you can join thousands of fellow fans aboard The ’80s Cruise and sing the hits at the top of your lungs somewhere in the Caribbean.

It’s a full week of live concerts, celebrity guests, theme nights, trivia, parties and the wonderfully strange experience of realizing you’re not the only person who remembers every word to songs the rest of the world forgot.

Book your cabin using promo code STUCK and receive $250 in onboard cabin credit.

Second place may be painful on the charts. On The ’80s Cruise, the only bad position is being left back on shore.

The ’80s Horror Movie You Somehow Missed — With David Weiner Oct 17, 2022
    Show notes

Episode 648: The great thing about horror movies in the 1980s is that they were rarely content to scare us just once.

A successful horror movie demanded a sequel. Then another sequel. Then perhaps a prequel, a reboot, a crossover or a chapter in which the villain somehow returned despite being very clearly dead at the end of the previous movie.

Logic was negotiable. Franchises were forever.

That wonderfully excessive era is the subject of In Search of Darkness: Part III, the latest installment in the epic documentary series celebrating ’80s horror cinema.

This week on Stuck in the ’80s, we’re joined by the documentary’s writer and director, David Weiner, to explore the movies, monsters and unforgettable moments that made the decade such a glorious time to be frightened.

We talk about the horror franchises that dominated theaters and video stores, from masked slashers and supernatural killers to creatures that simply refused to remain buried. We also revisit some of our favorite horror moments—the scenes that shocked us, thrilled us or made us reconsider walking into a dark room alone.

Part of the appeal of ’80s horror was its willingness to try almost anything.

The decade delivered massive studio releases, low-budget oddities, gruesome practical effects, dark comedy and movies that seemed designed primarily to look irresistible on a VHS box. Some became cultural landmarks. Others vanished into the back rows of the local video store, waiting for the right person to discover them years later.

That’s where David’s expertise becomes especially useful.

With so many sequels, cult favorites and forgotten titles lurking throughout the decade, we asked him to recommend the one can’t-miss ’80s horror movie that many fans probably never saw.

No spoilers here. You’ll have to listen for his selection—and then decide whether you’re brave enough to track it down.

Whether you spent the ’80s watching horror movies through your fingers or avoided the genre entirely, this conversation offers a fascinating look at why these films continue to survive, evolve and find new audiences.

After all, the best ’80s monsters never really die.

They just wait patiently for another sequel.

Your ’80s Vacation Is Calling From Inside the Ship

Growing Up in '80s Florida | Author Davida Breier Discusses Sinkhole Oct 10, 2022
    Show notes

Episode 786: This week on the Stuck in the '80s Podcast, Steve talks with author Davida Breier about her novel Sinkhole, growing up in small-town Florida during the 1980s, and how the decade's music, culture and quirks helped shape her story.

The 1980s looked a little different if you grew up in Florida.

Sure, we had MTV, arcades and shopping malls like everyone else. But we also had orange groves, summer thunderstorms, mysterious sinkholes and enough humidity to ruin just about any hairstyle in under five minutes.

This week on the Stuck in the '80s Podcast, Steve welcomes author Davida Breier to discuss her novel Sinkhole, a coming-of-age story that captures what it was really like to grow up in a small Florida town during one of pop culture's most unforgettable decades.

The conversation explores the inspiration behind the novel and why Florida serves as much more than a backdrop. In many ways, it's another character in the story. Its unpredictable landscape, quirky communities and unique blend of beauty and strangeness create the perfect setting for a tale about adolescence and self-discovery.

Davida also discusses how the music, movies and cultural touchstones of the 1980s helped shape both her characters and the world they inhabit. Whether you grew up in Florida or simply remember what it was like to navigate high school during the Reagan years, many of the experiences will feel instantly familiar.

Along the way, Steve and Davida talk about memory, nostalgia and why coming-of-age stories continue resonating with readers long after graduation. While the fashions and technology may change, the challenges of finding your identity, building friendships and imagining your future remain timeless.

The discussion also highlights the growing popularity of fiction set during the 1980s. For many readers, the decade offers the perfect blend of nostalgia and distance—a chance to revisit a world that feels comfortingly familiar while discovering new stories hidden within it.

Like many Stuck in the '80s author interviews, this episode goes beyond the book itself. It's a conversation about place, memory and the strange, wonderful ways our hometowns continue shaping us long after we've left them behind.

And if you've ever lived through a Florida summer, you'll probably recognize a few things that don't appear in most travel brochures.

If you enjoy coming-of-age fiction, stories rooted in the 1980s and conversations about the memories that define us, this episode belongs in your playlist.

The Most Unlikely Cover Songs of the '80s | Featuring Pete Byrne of Naked Eyes Oct 04, 2022
    Show notes

Episode 646: This week on the Stuck in the '80s Podcast, we revisit one of our favorite episodes from 2014, exploring the most unlikely cover songs of the 1980s and featuring a special interview with Pete Byrne of Naked Eyes.

One of the greatest myths about the 1980s is that it was all about originality.

The truth is, some of the decade's most memorable hits actually began life years—or even decades—earlier.

This week, we're dusting off one of our favorite classic episodes as Steve and Brad revisit the most unlikely cover songs of the '80s. Some stayed remarkably faithful to the originals. Others completely reinvented them, becoming so iconic that many listeners still don't realize they were covers at all.

The conversation explores why the '80s proved to be such fertile ground for reimagining older material. Advances in synthesizers, drum machines and studio production gave artists the opportunity to breathe new life into songs from the '60s and '70s, often introducing them to an entirely new audience.

One of the highlights of the episode is Steve's interview with Pete Byrne, whose band Naked Eyes built much of its early success on stylish synth-pop interpretations of beloved classics like Always Something There to Remind Me and (There's) Always Something There to Remind Me. Pete discusses how the band approached updating familiar songs without losing what made them timeless in the first place.

Along the way, Steve and Brad debate which cover songs surpassed their originals, which stayed true to the source material and which took the biggest creative risks. It's the kind of musical rabbit hole that every '80s fan eventually falls into—and it's always fun comparing notes.

The discussion also serves as a reminder of just how interconnected music history really is. Many artists of the '80s weren't simply borrowing old songs; they were paying tribute to the musicians who inspired them while putting their own unmistakable stamp on the material.

Like many of our archive episodes, this one still holds up remarkably well. Great songs don't expire, and neither do great conversations about them.

Whether you already know every original version or you're about to discover that some of your favorite '80s hits had earlier lives, this episode offers plenty of surprises.

The Stuck in the '80s Podcast has spent nearly 20 years celebrating the music, movies, television and pop culture of the greatest decade ever. If you'd like to help keep the show going, consider supporting us on Patreon for bonus content, exclusive livestreams, behind-the-scenes stories and a few surprises we don't share anywhere else.

If talking about '80s music is your idea of a perfect vacation, you owe it to yourself to experience The 80s Cruise. Imagine hearing these songs performed live by the artists who made them famous while spending a week with fellow fans who know every lyric and every deep cut.
