Patty Lin on ‘Friends,’ ‘Freaks and Geeks’ and Leaving Hollywood Behind Oct 22, 2023
    Show notes

Behind every beloved television series are writers navigating deadlines, creative battles, network pressure and the unpredictable machinery of Hollywood. This week on the Stuck in the ’80s Podcast, Spearsy welcomes acclaimed television writer Patty Lin to discuss her revealing memoir End Credits: How I Broke Up With Hollywood and her remarkable career writing for some of the most influential television shows of the past several decades.

During the conversation, Patty reflects on her experiences working on iconic series including Freaks and Geeks and Friends — two very different but equally beloved shows that helped define television for Gen X audiences and beyond. She discusses the realities of television writers’ rooms, the pressures of network television and the emotional highs and lows of trying to create meaningful work inside one of the world’s most demanding industries.

The interview also explores the themes of End Credits: How I Broke Up With Hollywood, including burnout, identity, ambition and the complicated relationship many creative people develop with Hollywood success. Patty opens up about why she ultimately stepped away from the industry and how writing the memoir allowed her to rethink both her career and her understanding of achievement.

Along the way, Spearsy and Patty revisit the lasting cultural impact of shows like Freaks and Geeks, which captured the awkward emotional reality of adolescence in a way that still resonates with audiences decades later. The conversation also touches on the changing nature of television itself — from the network-TV era of the 1980s and 1990s to the streaming world that dominates entertainment today.

If you love behind-the-scenes Hollywood stories, television history, ’80s and ’90s nostalgia and thoughtful conversations about creativity and pop culture, this episode belongs in your playlist.

Alan Hunter and Mark Goodman on MTV’s First Years and the Music Video Revolution Oct 15, 2023
    Show notes

Few television channels have ever changed pop culture as dramatically as MTV. When the network launched in 1981, it didn’t just revolutionize the music industry — it completely transformed the way an entire generation experienced music, fashion, celebrity culture and television itself. This week on the Stuck in the ’80s Podcast, Steve and Brad revisit a special live conversation recorded aboard the 2022 voyage of The 80s Cruise featuring original MTV VJs Alan Hunter and Mark Goodman as they celebrate the network’s 40th anniversary.

During the discussion, Alan and Mark reflect on the chaotic and exciting early days of MTV, when nobody fully understood how much influence music videos would eventually have on entertainment and youth culture. They share behind-the-scenes stories about interviewing legendary artists, working inside a groundbreaking new television format and suddenly becoming recognizable personalities themselves during the early 1980s.

The conversation also explores how MTV helped launch or transform the careers of artists like Madonna, Duran Duran, Michael Jackson and Prince. Along the way, Steve and Brad revisit what it felt like growing up during the MTV generation, when music videos became a shared daily experience for Gen X kids racing home after school to see what was playing next.

Alan and Mark also reflect on the broader cultural impact of MTV — from fashion trends and concert culture to the rise of celebrity personalities and the blending of music, television and visual storytelling into something completely new. Their stories offer a firsthand look at one of the most influential media revolutions of the modern era.

If you love MTV nostalgia, music history, behind-the-scenes stories from the 1980s and revisiting the artists and videos that shaped a generation, this episode belongs in your playlist.

Don Barnes of 38 Special on FM Radio Hits and The 80s Cruise Oct 06, 2023
    Show notes

Few bands captured the sound of arena-ready Southern rock in the 1980s quite like 38 Special. Blending guitar-driven energy, massive singalong choruses and polished FM-radio production, the band became one of the defining rock acts of the MTV era with songs like Hold On Loosely, Caught Up in You, Rockin' into the Night and Second Chance. This week on the Stuck in the ’80s Podcast, Spearsy welcomes frontman Don Barnes for a deep dive into the band’s history, musical evolution and lasting connection with fans decades later.

During the interview, Don reflects on the rise of 38 Special from Jacksonville to nationwide FM-radio dominance during the late 1970s and 1980s. He discusses the songwriting process behind the band’s biggest hits and how 38 Special successfully blended Southern rock roots with the slicker, radio-friendly sound that came to dominate mainstream rock during the MTV generation.

The conversation also explores the changing music landscape of the 1980s and how the band adapted from gritty guitar rock into a polished arena-rock powerhouse without losing its identity. Along the way, Don shares stories about touring during the golden age of rock concerts, the emotional connection fans still have with the music and what it means to perform songs that remain staples of classic rock radio more than 40 years later.

Spearsy and Don also discuss The 80s Cruise and why nostalgia events continue attracting passionate audiences who still deeply connect with the soundtrack of their youth. The conversation highlights the unique community that forms around live ’80s music and the enduring power of songs tied to road trips, summer nights, school dances and FM-radio memories.

If you love classic rock, Southern rock, FM-radio nostalgia and revisiting the anthems that helped define the soundtrack of the 1980s, this episode belongs in your playlist.

“You Talkin’ to Me?” | Author Brian Abrams on Hollywood’s Most Iconic Movie Quotes Sep 30, 2023
    Show notes

Think about how many movie quotes you use in an average day.

Maybe it's a line from a favorite comedy. Maybe it's something from an action movie. Maybe it's one of those quotes that's become so deeply embedded in popular culture that you've forgotten it originated in a film at all.

Now imagine building an entire book around those unforgettable moments.

This week on the Stuck in the ’80s podcast, Steve and Brad welcome author Brian Abrams to discuss his new book, You Talkin' To Me? The Definitive Guide to Iconic Movie Quotes, an entertaining deep dive into some of the most famous lines in movie history.

The conversation explores what separates an ordinary piece of dialogue from a quote that enters the cultural lexicon and stays there for generations. Some lines become catchphrases. Others become shorthand for entire movies. A select few become part of everyday conversation.

Of course, for Stuck in the ’80s listeners, much of the fun comes from revisiting the unforgettable movie quotes that emerged during our favorite decade.

The gang discusses how films from the 1980s generated an astonishing number of enduring one-liners. Whether they came from action movies, comedies, teen films or blockbuster adventures, these quotes helped shape the shared language of an entire generation.

Along the way, Brian shares stories from his research process and discusses how certain quotes took on lives of their own far beyond the films that introduced them. Sometimes the most memorable lines weren't even expected to become iconic when they were first delivered.

The episode also explores how movie quoting became a uniquely Gen X pastime. Long before social media memes and viral clips, fans kept these lines alive through repeated viewings, VHS tapes, cable-TV reruns and endless conversations with friends.

Like many Stuck in the ’80s interviews, the discussion becomes more than a conversation about entertainment history. It's a reminder of how deeply movies influence our memories, friendships and cultural identity.

And let's be honest: if you're reading this, you've probably already quoted at least one movie today.

If you love classic films, pop-culture trivia and discovering the stories behind the lines everyone knows by heart, this episode belongs in your playlist.

Just Missed the Biscuit: The No. 2 Songs of the UK, Part 1 | 1973-1975 Sep 25, 2023
    Show notes

For years, Stuck in the ’80s listeners have enjoyed "Close But No Cigar," our series dedicated to songs that climbed to No. 2 on the U.S. charts but never managed to capture the top spot.

But here's the thing: Britain has an even stranger, richer and sometimes more surprising chart history.

So naturally, it was time for a new series.

This week on the Stuck in the ’80s podcast, Steve and Brad debut Just Missed the Biscuit, a UK-focused spin on the beloved chart-history concept. The goal remains the same: celebrate great songs that nearly became No. 1 hits but ultimately fell just short.

The first episode takes listeners back to the years 1973 through 1975, a period that helped lay much of the musical foundation for what would eventually become the sound of the 1980s.

Along the way, the gang revisits music from David Bowie, whose influence on new wave, synth-pop and countless MTV-era artists remains impossible to overstate. The discussion also includes songs from Queen, a group that would soon become one of the biggest bands on the planet, along with selections from The Carpenters and other artists who left an indelible mark on popular music.

As always, the fun comes from the chart mysteries themselves. What kept these songs from reaching No. 1? Which records blocked their path? And looking back decades later, were the chart-toppers actually better than the songs they defeated?

One of the most fascinating aspects of the series is seeing how differently the UK and American charts evolved during the same period. Songs that dominated one country sometimes barely registered in the other, creating two very different versions of pop music history.

The episode also highlights how many future 1980s stars were already developing the sounds and styles that would eventually define the MTV generation. Even though these songs predate the decade we love most, their influence can be heard throughout the music that followed.

Like many Stuck in the ’80s music-history episodes, the conversation blends nostalgia, trivia and passionate debate while shining a spotlight on records that deserve a second look.

After all, sometimes the songs that finish second end up leaving the biggest legacy.

If you love chart history, forgotten gems and discovering alternate paths through pop music history, this episode belongs in your playlist.

Steve Kilbey of The Church on ‘Under the Milky Way,’ ‘The Hypnogogue’ and Dystopian Dreams Sep 14, 2023
    Show notes

For more than four decades, The Church has occupied a unique corner of rock music — blending dreamlike melodies, cryptic lyrics and atmospheric guitars into a sound that helped shape alternative and psychedelic rock long before either genre fully entered the mainstream. This week on the Stuck in the ’80s Podcast, Spearsy sits down with singer, bassist and songwriter Steve Kilbey for a wide-ranging conversation about the band’s history, upcoming North American tour and ambitious new album The Hypnogogue.

During the interview, Kilbey reflects on the early years of The Church in Australia during the dawn of the 1980s and the gradual evolution of the group’s distinctive sound. He discusses classic songs like The Unguarded Moment and the later MTV-era breakthrough Under the Milky Way while exploring how the band balanced commercial success with an uncompromising artistic identity.

The conversation also dives into The Hypnogogue, a concept album steeped in futuristic imagery, artificial creativity and dystopian themes. Kilbey discusses the inspirations behind the record and why he believes visions of the future in art and culture inevitably lean toward darker possibilities. Along the way, Spearsy and Kilbey reflect on how science fiction, philosophy and existential themes have always shaped The Church’s songwriting and imagery.

The interview also revisits the larger Australian music explosion of the 1980s and how bands like INXS, Men at Work and The Church helped introduce a distinctive new sound to international audiences during the MTV era. Like many Stuck in the ’80s interviews, the conversation becomes as much about artistic longevity and creativity as it is about nostalgia itself.

If you love alternative rock, atmospheric guitar music, Australian bands, ’80s music history and conversations with artists who continue pushing creative boundaries decades later, this episode belongs in your playlist.

Summer of ’83 Deep Cuts | Forgotten Gems from the Albums That Defined a Season Aug 31, 2023
    Show notes

    Everyone remembers the hits.

The songs that dominated MTV. The tracks that lived on the radio all summer. The singles that became part of the permanent soundtrack of the 1980s.

But sometimes the best songs were hiding one or two tracks deeper on the album.

This week on the Stuck in the ’80s podcast, Steve and Brad jump into their musical time machine and return to the summer of 1983, exploring some of the forgotten gems tucked away on albums released during one of the most exciting periods in pop-music history.

The summer of '83 was packed with artists who would help define the decade. Some were already established stars. Others were just beginning to break through. Together, they created a remarkable collection of albums that continue influencing listeners 40 years later.

The gang revisits deep cuts and overlooked favorites from Paul Young, whose soulful voice would soon make him one of the decade's most recognizable performers. They also dig into the catalog of Men at Work, whose massive success often overshadowed some truly excellent album tracks.

Along the way, the conversation highlights music from Kajagoogoo, Jackson Browne, The Fixx and Stevie Nicks, all of whom released albums containing songs that deserved far more attention than they received at the time.

One of the joys of revisiting these records decades later is discovering how well many of the non-singles hold up. Freed from the constant exposure that often accompanies major hits, these tracks can feel fresh even to longtime fans.

The episode also serves as a reminder of an era when buying an album meant committing to an entire artistic statement. Before playlists and streaming services, listeners often discovered their favorite songs by simply flipping the record over and letting it play.

Like many Stuck in the ’80s music episodes, the discussion becomes a celebration of exploration and rediscovery. Sometimes the most rewarding musical experiences come from revisiting familiar albums and finding something you missed the first time around.

Whether you're a lifelong collector or simply looking for a few forgotten songs to add to your playlist, this episode offers plenty of reasons to dive back into the summer of 1983.

If you love album cuts, hidden gems and rediscovering the music beyond the hits, this episode belongs in your playlist.

Back to the Summer of 1986 | Author Skye McDonald Discusses The Not So Nice Girl Aug 21, 2023
    Show notes

There are certain summers that seem larger than life.

The music sounded better. The movies felt bigger. Every day seemed packed with possibility. For many Gen Xers, the summer of 1986 occupies a special place in memory.

This week on the Stuck in the ’80s podcast, Spearsy welcomes author Skye McDonald to discuss her new novel, The Not So Nice Girl, a romance story set during that unforgettable season.

    Website Substack Instagram Facebook Twitter

The conversation explores the inspiration behind the book and why 1986 provides such a rich backdrop for storytelling. It was a year filled with iconic music, blockbuster movies and cultural moments that continue resonating nearly four decades later. For writers, it offers the perfect setting for stories about first love, friendship, identity and personal growth.

Skye discusses how nostalgia plays a role in her work while also emphasizing that the strongest stories are ultimately about people rather than time periods. The sights, sounds and fashions of the decade help create atmosphere, but it's the characters and relationships that keep readers turning pages.

Along the way, Spearsy and Skye revisit some of the cultural touchstones that defined the summer of 1986 and discuss why that era continues inspiring writers, filmmakers and fans today. For many readers, revisiting the decade offers both an escape and an opportunity to reconnect with memories from their own lives.

The discussion also examines the growing popularity of nostalgic fiction and why books set in the 1980s continue finding enthusiastic audiences. As generations rediscover the music, movies and attitudes of the decade, stories like The Not So Nice Girl help bring those memories to life in fresh and engaging ways.

Like many Stuck in the ’80s interviews, the conversation blends nostalgia, pop culture and personal storytelling while highlighting a creative project inspired by the decade we all love.

Whether you're a fan of romance novels, coming-of-age stories or simply enjoy revisiting the sights and sounds of the MTV era, this episode offers a fun trip back to one of the most memorable summers of the decade.

40 Years of Stop Making Sense | Revisiting the Ultimate Concert Film Aug 12, 2023
    Show notes

Some concert films capture a performance.

    Others capture a moment.

And then there's Stop Making Sense, a film so inventive and electrifying that four decades later it's still widely considered the greatest concert movie ever made.

This week on the Stuck in the ’80s podcast, Spearsy welcomes guest co-host Doug Arthur to celebrate the 40th anniversary of Stop Making Sense and discuss its triumphant return to theaters in 2023.

Directed by Jonathan Demme and featuring the incomparable Talking Heads, the film transformed expectations for what a concert movie could be. Rather than simply documenting a live performance, it became a cinematic experience all its own.

The discussion explores the film's now-legendary structure, which begins with David Byrne alone onstage with an acoustic guitar and gradually builds into a full-band spectacle. What starts as something intimate and minimalist evolves into one of the most visually compelling live performances ever captured on film.

Along the way, Spearsy and Doug revisit many of the film's standout moments, including unforgettable performances of songs like Psycho Killer, Burning Down the House, Once in a Lifetime and Life During Wartime.

Of course, no conversation about Stop Making Sense would be complete without discussing David Byrne's iconic oversized suit, a visual image that became almost as famous as the music itself.

The episode also examines why the film continues connecting with audiences who weren't even alive when it was released. Part of the appeal lies in the timeless quality of the music. Part comes from the creativity of the staging. And part stems from the sheer joy and energy radiating from every frame.

Like many Stuck in the ’80s movie and music episodes, the conversation becomes a celebration of artistry, innovation and the enduring power of great performances.

Forty years later, Stop Making Sense still feels fresh, surprising and utterly unlike anything else.

If you love live music, concert films and revisiting one of the most influential artistic achievements of the MTV era, this episode belongs in your playlist.

Remembering Paul Reubens | The Magic and Legacy of Pee-wee Herman Aug 05, 2023
    Show notes

    Some performers make us laugh.

    Some create memorable characters.

And every once in a while, someone creates an entire world.

That was the gift of Paul Reubens.

This week on the Stuck in the ’80s podcast, Steve and Brad remember the life and career of the beloved actor and comedian following news of his passing. More importantly, they celebrate the imagination, creativity and joy he shared with audiences through the unforgettable character of Pee-wee Herman.

For countless Gen X kids, Pee-wee wasn't simply a television character. He was a friend. A guide to a delightfully weird universe where talking furniture, secret words and absurd adventures all felt perfectly normal.

Whether through Pee-wee's Big Adventure, Pee-wee's Playhouse or later projects that introduced the character to new audiences, Reubens created something unlike anything else in popular culture. Pee-wee's world was whimsical, unpredictable and endlessly inventive.

The episode revisits many of the moments that made Pee-wee Herman such an enduring figure. From the famous bicycle quest in Pee-wee's Big Adventure to the colorful chaos of the Playhouse, the character became one of the defining pop-culture creations of the 1980s.

Along the way, Steve and Brad discuss why Reubens' work connected so deeply with audiences of all ages. Children loved the silliness and imagination. Adults appreciated the wit, creativity and subtle layers hidden beneath the surface. Few performers have ever managed to appeal so effectively to both groups simultaneously.

The conversation also reflects on Reubens' broader career beyond Pee-wee Herman. Though the character became his signature creation, his influence stretched across film, television and comedy for decades.

Like many Stuck in the ’80s memorial episodes, the discussion balances sadness with gratitude. The loss feels personal because Pee-wee Herman was woven into so many childhood memories. Yet the laughter and wonder remain available every time we revisit his work.

That's the remarkable thing about truly great entertainers. They leave behind more than performances. They leave behind joy.

And few people brought more joy to the world than Paul Reubens.

If you grew up with Pee-wee's Playhouse, laughed through Pee-wee's Big Adventure or simply appreciate original comedic voices, this episode belongs in your playlist.
