    Stay Through the Credits

We’re Dan and Julia, and we cannot watch a movie without arguing about it.

Stay Through the Credits is what happens when two people with very different taste share one couch (or one mic). One of us cries at everything. One of us says “it’s fine, it’s just a movie” and then thinks about it for three days. Guess which is which.

Every week we talk about the films and shows we can’t stop thinking about: the masterpieces, the guilty pleasures, the endings that ruined our night, and the hidden gems we’ll bully you into watching.

No film-school gatekeeping. No pretending we liked the boring one.

Cannes and the Clapping Cult: The Weird World of Standing Ovations May 24, 2025
    Show notes

What do Pan’s Labyrinth, Sentimental Value, and The Paperboy have in common? Absurdly long applause. In this episode, we break down the most legendary (and baffling) standing ovations in Cannes Film Festival history — from this year’s 19-minute Trier tearjerker to the infamous 22-minute clapathon for Guillermo del Toro. Does all that standing and cheering actually mean anything? Let’s talk about it.

“Honey Don’t!” and the Case of the Missing Plot May 24, 2025
    Show notes

We just left the Cannes screening of Honey Don’t! — Ethan Coen’s latest lesbian noir comedy — and we’ve got thoughts. Margaret Qualley and Aubrey Plaza bring the heat, but this quirky caper fizzles fast. We break down the film’s chaotic structure, its half-baked politics, and whether there’s still gas left in Coen’s solo tank.

The Mastermind: Kelly Reichardt’s Heist Movie, Un-Engineered May 23, 2025
    Show notes

Fresh out of the Palais, we dive into The Mastermind, Kelly Reichardt’s moody and mesmerizing take on the heist film. Josh O’Connor stars as a 1970s Massachusetts art thief whose carefully staged robbery unravels into something much messier — and much sadder. We talk genre subversion, mustard tones, pig slop, Alana Haim’s curlers, and why Reichardt is still a master of quiet chaos. Spoilers ahead and vibes guaranteed.

“Sorry, Baby”: A Debut That Hurts, Heals, and Hilariously Hits Home May 22, 2025
    Show notes

Fresh from its Cannes screening after a Sundance premiere, we dive into Sorry, Baby, Eva Victor’s darkly funny and emotionally raw debut. We unpack how Victor blends humor, trauma, and tender friendship into one of the most human films we’ve seen this year — and why it’s a breakout that deserves wide attention.

    Sentimental Value: Our Palme d’Or Front-Runner May 22, 2025
    Show notes

Fresh from our screening last night at Cannes, we dive into Joachim Trier’s emotionally devastating Sentimental Value. With career-best performances from Stellan Skarsgård and Renate Reinsve, this layered family drama about memory, filmmaking, and fractured love is our clear Palme d’Or favorite — and maybe Trier’s best film yet.

Love in Silence: The History of Sound at Cannes May 21, 2025
    Show notes

We reflect on Oliver Hermanus’ quietly devastating wartime romance The History of Sound, starring Paul Mescal and Josh O’Connor. Recorded fresh from Cannes, this episode dives into the film’s understated queer love story, its haunting performances, and why its emotional restraint hits harder than any grand gesture.

A Private Life: Jodie Foster Goes Full French, Full Freud May 20, 2025
    Show notes

Live from Cannes, we unpack A Private Life, Jodie Foster’s haunting return in a French-language psychological thriller. Directed by Rebecca Zlotowski, this elegant, slippery film blends therapy sessions, dream logic, and past-life visions. We break down Foster’s performance, the film’s hypnotic twists, and why this one might sneak into awards season conversations.

Cannes Check-In: Early Oscar Contenders Emerge May 20, 2025
    Show notes

We're still on the ground at Cannes 2025 and breaking down the films already making waves in the Oscar conversation. From Denzel Washington’s powerhouse turn in Highest 2 Lowest to Jennifer Lawrence’s raw performance in Die My Love, we take a look at the standouts, the surprises, and the long shots as awards season buzz begins to build.

Eleanor the Great, or the Great Pretender? May 20, 2025
    Show notes

We just saw Eleanor the Great at Cannes — Scarlett Johansson’s directorial debut aims for quirky comedy and heartfelt drama but ends up lost somewhere in between. We unpack June Squibb’s brash performance, the film’s questionable Holocaust plot twist, and why this crowd-pleaser never quite earns its sentiment.

Alpha at Cannes: Ducournau’s Misfire in Marble May 20, 2025
    Show notes

We saw Alpha last night at Cannes — Julia Ducournau’s follow-up to Titane aims for haunting AIDS allegory but lands in muddled body horror. We break down the film’s heavy-handed metaphors, wasted performances, and why its surreal visuals can’t save its emotional incoherence.
