That OTHER Star Wars Ongoing Comic – SWBTF #81 Jul 23, 2013
    Show notes

STAR WARS, Volume 2, featuring; Han, Luke, and Leia, Super Star Destroying Continuity, and Vader, all on the next Star Wars Beyond the Films. YOUR Star Wars discussion podcast! YOUR ticket to the EU!

This week true believers, Beyonders, Fanboys, Fangirls, respected aliens around the galaxy, The Defender of the EU; Mark Hurliman, and your EU Guru; Nathan P. Butler, sit down to discuss Dark Horse Comics latest installment to the #SWEU- Star Wars: In The Shadow of Yavin. (Star Wars Vol 2 Ongoing Series) Strap in and tighten your crash webbing Fandom, Star Wars Beyond the Films is setting off on another rapid-fire trip into the galaxy far, far away!

A new look at an old era is here! What does this spell for Continuity as we know it?

First off; no your equalizer is right, Mark has a head cold.

Staying spoiler free at the start (14 minutes) the guys discuss the hype around this new ongoing Star Wars series. Nathan also discusses the flood of 1st issue variants and the insanity of it all.

Mark points out that it isn’t the only ongoing ‘Star Wars’ run…. Dark Times, i.e. Republic, i.e. Star Wars….

Nathan discusses touchstones that help place this story, Luke’s comment about the funerals this month, Super Star Destroyer being in the wrong place at the wrong time, and so forth. Mark points out a couple character moments where some characters just don’t feel right.

Look up in the sky! A continuity error! Or retcon in the making?

Both hosts agree that the art is just stellar. Leia as a starfighter pilot! (Nothing new here)

Leia is the hero you are looking for in this series. At least from the start. We also get new villains like Col. Bircher. While some characters get opportunity to grow, not everyone introduced to this series gets that treatment.

And what is up with the whole relationship with Prithi and Luke? What exactly happened on that long flight back to the Rebellion? And what is going on with her Force abilities? We see Luke as a “playah” apparently. Or are we to believe there is a new shipping war about to start? Luke/ Prithi vs Luke/ Leia….

Han is stuck on Coruscant, in a scene with which Wood shows us EXACTLY how Han can find time to use the Refresher with all the Big 3 tales set so on top of each other. (See what I did there Beyonders?)

They point out that Col. Bircher is the James T. Kirk of the series leading his Destroyer into battle from a Tie…. And even Luke is channeling Kirk with his replies to Prithi.
The art is the selling point for this series. Both hosts agree that the art style should be utilized more often in other eras as well.

Free digital copies in the 1st three issues. Mark discusses why this was an error on Dark Horse’s part. He felt they should have had all six issues sent with a free digital copy.

3PO and R2’s getting into the databanks was a great moment that both hosts immediately dialed into. A great character point for C3PO, which works into R2’s snoopy side. We also see what the maneuvering thrusters look like!

Very much like the Vipers in Battlestar Galactica. And if it is so easy to take out Interdiction ships and wings of Ties with a couple components from an X-Wing and a torpedo, why didn’t the Rebellion fashion more of those?!

How does the great set up end? Well the hosts have plenty to say about that. But you will have to listen to get a better idea.

So, once again, your dynamic duo cover entirely too much Ongoing Action in their ONE hour, but don’t worry, give it a go; you’ll laugh, you’ll cry, you might even get a little education on the EU while you’re at it. But no matter how you slice it and dice it, you’ll be having another adventure Beyond the Films. So sit back, hang on, enjoy the show, and may the Force be with you!

    Book of Sith – SWBTF #80 Jul 19, 2013
    Show notes

Book of Sith, Darth Bane, Darth Plagueis, Mother Talzin, Darth Sidious, and more, all on the next Star Wars Beyond the Films. YOUR Star Wars discussion podcast! YOUR ticket to the EU!

This week true believers, Beyonders, Fanboys, Fangirls, respected aliens around the galaxy, The Defender of the EU; Mark Hurliman, and your EU Guru; Nathan P. Butler, sit down to discuss Star Wars: Crucible. Strap in and tighten your crash webbing Fandom, Star Wars Beyond the Films is setting off on another rapid-fire trip into the galaxy far, far away!

Mark talks about his holocron hunt.

Nathan discusses a fandom reaction to Jedi Path when the ebook version released. As well as the differences between the hard copy and the ebook versions of Jedi Path, and how the ebook enhances the original experience. Nathan hope they do similar with Book of Sith somehow.

Mark mentions his Jedi credit from Jedi Path and how Her Universe should sell them and other Sithly trinkets.

The guys ponder other Sith who might have had their works lost and thus missed getting into the book. Sith like the Sith Emperor for instance. Though Mark points out the Sith Emperor has to be left out to leave the mystery of what happened to the Pure Bloods….. those who bred with the Dark Jedi. Originally we thought they were hunted down and killed, but in light of The Old Republic MMO we learn that the Pure Blood Empire thrived, in fact it was this Empire that Revan sought out to stop at the end of the first KotOR game. The same mystery could be said as to why we don’t see Darth Krayt show up. Or the book slipped out of that Galaxy before his time.

Mark points out how Dan Wallace is real slick with his Tuckerisms. In this case as seen in the image above Dan used The ForceCast’s Eric Geller.

They also talk about the next book in the line…

THE BOUNTY HUNTER CODE. They discuss some of the other potential books in the line we might one day see as well.

So, once again, your dynamic duo cover entirely too much Sith Secrets in their ONE hour, but don’t worry, give it a go; you’ll laugh, you’ll cry, you might even get a little education on the EU while you’re at it. But no matter how you slice it and dice it, you’ll be having another adventure Beyond the Films. So sit back, hang on, enjoy the show, and may the Force be with you!

    Crucible – SWBTF #83 Jul 13, 2013
    Show notes

Luke, Leia, and Han’s last adventure? Mortis found? Handing off to a next generation? What the Heck? These questions asked, and more, all on the next Star Wars Beyond the Films.

The first 27 minutes are spoiler free, and there IS a last minute SPOILER WARNING at the 27 mark. Enjoy!

Jumping in your hosts talk about the recent release of Star Wars in Shakspeare. And they also explain why and how this episode Flow Walked its way behind Episode 79. In fact Nathan recalls Image comics Storm Watch, and how there is a likeness to its 25th issue.

The guys discuss what “passing the torch to the next generation” means to them, and how Crucible could be the EU’s passing of the torch to a new continuity? They also mention Paul S. Kemp’s doulogy, and the word that it was placed on stand by, as well as what that might mean for Sword of the Jedi trilogy now that Crucible is out.

Nathan relates Die Hard and the Big 3. And how no matter how old they get they just keep taking their lumps.

Mark talks about his love / dislike relationship with Denning’s works. As Nathan relates it to more of the old Bantam era style of EU books. Nathan continues and sets up the plot in a spoiler free fashion, which lead the guys to talking about the Columi as a species as well as antagonists. What did they look like for instance. Kang or the Leader spring to Nathan’s mind whereas Mark sees more the classic x-files aliens.

They are a sort of under utilized species after all. Older than most species in the grand scheme of things.

Could it be said that Crucible has a sort of reverse Choices of One feel to it? Nathan thinks so; he tells you why. Mark enjoyed the book, and talks about a few things regarding the upcoming Sword of the Jedi trilogy. Which of course leads to some sequel trilogy discussion and Crucible’s possible role as the book-end of the novels for now.

27 minutes in the hosts start to tackle the spoilers. With Nathan pointing out a couple corrected errors that were fixed before final proofs.

They discuss new characters like Omad Kaeg, and how Omad and Han play counterpoint to each other. Which in turn shows how age plays a minor role through out the novel for our main three heroes.

Nathan brings up the fact that the Qrephs actions to kill Han and cripple Lando’s business ventures in the Rift brought memories of 9/11 to mind. Whereas Mark recalls the feeling moments from the Red Riding trilogy’s first episode, when everyone was out to get the main character, and how the Sullustan Senator gave the Qrephs with their shadow corporations that mafia-like feel. The guys talk character motivations, and plot advancment.

    They ponder things like:

    • Was Mortis and the concepts of the Monoliths in star Wars a bad thing?
    • What DID Abeloth do to Luke in their duel beyond shadows?
    • Did the end get too Trope-ie? Nathan points out a Dr. Who trope that shows up between Han and Leia.
    • Mark also ponders Leia’s dark moment when she was bent on rage and the singular purpose “to kill”.
    • And could Crucible be considered the Tarantino book of the #SWEU?

Also be sure to listen for what Mark means when he says the book has “Depth with no meaning.” And more!

Once again, your dynamic duo cover entirely too much elderly Jedi action in their ONE hour, but don’t worry, give it a go; you’ll laugh, you’ll cry, you might even get a little education on the EU while you’re at it. But no matter how you slice it and dice it, you’ll be having another adventure Beyond the Films. So sit back, hang on, enjoy the show, and may the Force be with you!

    The Last Jedi – SWBTF #79 Jul 07, 2013

This week true believers, Beyonders, Fanboys, Fangirls, respected aliens around the galaxy, The Defender of the EU; Mark Hurliman, and your EU Guru; Nathan P. Butler, sit down to discuss Star Wars: The Last Jedi. Strap in and tighten your crash webbing Fandom, Star Wars Beyond the Films is setting off on another rapid-fire trip into the galaxy far, far away!

Your hosts jump right into Michael Reaves and Maya Kaathryn Bohnhoff’s Star Wars: The Last Jedi, the somewhat conclusion of the Coruscant Nights Trilogy. Right away in Nathan points out that this book should not be confused with both the Marvel Comic of the same name, or the very similar titled The Last of the Jedi series.

Though this isn’t the first, nor certainly the last time we will see recycled titles. It in no way impacts the story that unfolds between the pages.

The guys also drop a spoiler free review right out the gate. (A new trend they have decided to continue) With a last minute bail out before they really flesh out the book.

They both agreed that they enjoyed the book, and with few issues arising along the way! What were the parts that they enjoyed? What didn’t they? Well listen in to find out!

Once again, your dynamic duo cover entirely too much Post Order 66 Jedi action in their ONE hour, but don’t worry, give it a go; you’ll laugh, you’ll cry, you might even get a little education on the EU while you’re at it. Strap in and tighten your crash webbing Fandom, Star Wars Beyond the Films is setting off on another rapid-fire trip into the galaxy far, far away!

How does the first arc of Dark Times add up?

The hosts have plenty to say this week as they tackle the series Nathan really shakes his head over.

Also new- the hosts offer up a spoiler free look at the series before jumping into the heavy spoilers.

Once again, your dynamic duo cover entirely too much Jedi-on-the-run action in their ONE hour, but don’t worry, give it a go; you’ll laugh, you’ll cry, you might even get a little education on the EU while you’re at it. Butler, sit down to ponder and discuss Star Wars: Rebellion, Vol 1 entitled, My Brother, My Enemy. So strap in and tighten your crash webbing Fandom, Star Wars Beyond the Films is setting off on another rapid-fire trip into the galaxy far, far away!

Jumping right in Mark ponders the differences between reading your story arcs as Singles, vs TPMs, vs Omnibi, and the joys and burdens of each format.

Nathan locks us in on the time placement of the issue, and artists, and script writers, and so forth, and how the story ties into the EU overall.

They also ponder how the art stands up, and why issue #3 seems so very different than the rest. There are many beautiful 2-page spreads through out the arc. Both hosts have some favorites.

Cosplayers now have a Rebel Armor worth it’s salt. And a Dark Horse 2-pack based off of issue #3.

The 3rd issue also marked the change in art. Note the differences in style from the panel and cover below/

    VS.

And both host’s favorite cover below. It paints a very gruesome image for the Rebellion.Sith has hit the fan as Vader springs his trap. Will the Rebellion get away? Or are they doomed?

One of Mark’s favorite images below shows Rebel One badly damaged and blindly jumping into hyperspace to escape from the Empire’s clutches.

Who does Vader find in the escape pod amid all the wreckage from the battle? Have we seen the last of Tank? (comic law #6: No Body; No Death) Give a listen to find out more.

So once again, your dynamic duo cover entirely too much Rebel action in their ONE hour, so they said to the 9 hells with it and threw out that rule, but don’t worry, give it a go; you’ll laugh, you’ll cry, you might even get a little education on the EU while you’re at it.
