DIY Sportsman - E-scouting and Planning for Gun Hunting Setups Jun 11, 2020
    Show notes

I did something that wasn't sure I'd ever do... apply for an Iowa tag. Specifically, I applied for a 1st shotgun season tag, which is relatively easier to draw and doesn't interfere with other archery rut hunts like South Dakota or Missouri. In fact, it doesn't really interfere with any of my other planned firearms hunts either. But this does bring up a topic that's obviously very fresh in my mind, which is scouting and preparing for gun hunts. It can be very different than an archery hunt, unless it's a gun hunt during the rut and in a low pressure area. In this podcast I talk about the three primary factors I look at in relation to a gun hunt: Timing, Pressure, and Terrain. Timing and pressure both dictate to a fairly large extent the overall strategy, but terrain dictates the exact set up. I dive into three specific terrain types that I have the most historical experience with: Hills, Marsh/Swamp, and Big Woods terrain, and how I tackle each a little differently when it comes to exact setup. Hunting Gear Podcast - Kill Kits Jun 11, 2020
    Show notes

As well all know once the shot is made there is a lot of work that needs to be done in order to get the animal properly gutted and processed. On this episode of the Hunting Gear Podcast, Dan and Bob break down all the gear in their kill kits. The guys discuss what knives they use, their game bags, and other pieces of gear that help them get the guts out or the meat back to the truck. They break down this episode in to two categories, backcountry kill kits and kill kits that are left in the truck on a whitetail hunt. Enjoy! Hunting Gear Podcast is Powered by Simplecast

N.F.C. - Old Barn Taxidermy with Sam Gaylord Jun 10, 2020
    Show notes

They say that cheating on your taxidermist is just as bad as cheating on your wife, or that's what today's guest says. On this episode of the the Nine Finger Chronicles, Dan talks with the owner of Old Barn Taxidermy Sam Gaylord. Sam has been around the block a time or two and has experience in what feel like, just about everything. Sam talks about how he was introduced in to taxidermy through an ex-wife while he was running on of the largest archery shops in the state. Sam explains how important hearing the story about the hunt is to how the deer is mounted and how once completed, the mount is a work of art that symbolizes past memories. If you ever get the opportunity to chat Sam I highly recommend it. Nine Finger Chronicles is Powered by Simplecast

Land & Legacy - Food Plot Trials and Tribulations Jun 09, 2020
    Show notes

If we could sum up food plots in one question or phrase it would likely be, "How can we maximize our food plot production with as little time and money as possible?" We strive to always find the best products for the money and allow us to have the best return on our investment. It is no different with food plots and we've fortunately been planting and testing for a long time. During that time we've found some major money pits, bad practices, and also very quick results that helped landowners save money all while still growing successful food plots. Why does soil health always include non-native annual species? Why soil health improvement shouldn't involve monocultures of plants and low diverse blends. These are all questions and concerns we discuss in new movements headed towards soil health. We really get into the weeds on this podcast as we talk about implementing cattle into our system to build diversity and increase disturbance on the food plots. Finally, we touch on some of our testing with no drill, and only small equipment like ATV's and UTV's and how almost anyone can go no till. Diversity wins again! #ForLoveoftheLand Land & Legacy is Powered by Simplecast

Land & Legacy - Creating Summertime Thermal Cover Jun 09, 2020
    Show notes

On this week’s podcast we cover all things summer and heat. It’s been heating up in the Midwest and a recent consulting trip to Texas reinforced the need for thermal cover. Yes, thermal cover for the summertime. The heat and potential for drought are something land managers should consider. Can you imagine what summer thermal cover looks like? How do you create it? Why is summer thermal cover even necessary? We address these questions and more. By the end of the podcast you will be considering shade, aspects of slopes, bedding on extended points, wind currents and much more. Don’t forget about the bottomland management as well. Creeks with shaded sandy banks will be “hot” spots. Don’t let the heat keep you from managing your land appropriately. Make sure you address each stress period adequately for the wildlife you want to promote. Land & Legacy is Powered by Simplecast
