But, Clint is also a bowhunting nut just like the rest of us. On this episode of the Nine Finger Chronicles, Dan and Clint get in to a good old fashioned BS Session where they talk about western hunting, training for western hunts, dumb shit they did when they were younger, and of course bowhunting for whitetails. Huntavore - Wildgame and Good Spirits with Mammoth Distilling Jun 08, 2020
    Show notes

Huntavore has finished another year of bringing you wildgame related material. What better way to celebrate than with a drink and toast. To get some inspiration, Nick is joined by Stuart and Colin of Mammoth Distilling in Northern Michigan. The group discusses the spirits we love to drink when celebrating, contemplating, and carrying on tradition. So grab a drab of your favorite drink, and enjoy. Show Notes: Holy Smokes! Huntavore is celebrating its second year as a podcast! Who knew anyone could talk about food and wild game for that long. It has really been a trip to share my own experience and culinary journey, along with bringing in guests to teach us and challenge us. I want to thank all of our previous guest and friends i’ve made along the way. I want to thank Dan Johnson and the whole Sportsmen’s Nation crew. And of coarse, you the listeners. Its a real treasure to find folks who are passionate about the outdoors and also serious about their table fare. So i'm celebrating the accomplishments of Huntavore, and also looking forward to this next year of sharing our hunting and fishing lifestyle through the utilization and consumption of our wildgame. I can’t think of a better way to celebrate the accomplishment of this year two, than a raise of the glass with an incredible cocktail. To talk about celebration and tradition holding cocktails, Nick is joined by Stuart Hikman and Colin Gaudard of Mammoth Distilling. A distillery located in Northern Michigan making a whole range of spirits. Colin gives us a basic walkthrough of how making whiskeys differs from beer, along with some the process of refined distilling. He also sheds light on some misconceptions, like Bourbon being a product only made in Kentucky (Fake News!) Stuart talks about making cocktails. Specifically the Whiskey Tango Foxtrot, that uses Jalapeno to make the drink spicy. It surprises you, and really makes for a enjoyable drink, that isn’t all sugar and sweet. During the covid pandemic, and the low availability of sanitizer, Mammoth halted spirit production and put their ethanol stores to work by producing sanitizer. They began bottling and shipping the liquid gold in the amount upwards of 20,000 gallons. To finish the conversation Nick has Stuart describe another favorite, an ol’ fashioned. This was a super fun talk with some incredible gentlemen. Cheers! Huntavore is Powered by Simplecast

Southern Ground Hunting - What Are Your Biggest Deer Hunting Regrets? Jun 05, 2020
    Show notes

As hunters, it's our responsibility to make sure we have no regrets when it comes to our time spent in the woods. This is a sport that we are all passionate about. We live and breathe whitetails. Where's the fun in having regrets about something you love so much? In fact, the entire Southern Ground Hunting brand is built on the idea that we chase the experience that we desire, which leaves little room for regret. That said, the truth is that we all probably have a little bit of regret if we're being honest. Whether it be the a buck that got away because we weren't practiced and ready, or maybe you made a bad decision to take an unethical shot at last light. Whatever the case, if we all thought about it, we could probably all come up with a list of things that maybe we would do differently if given a second chance. In this episode, Parker and Drew have a candid conversation about some of the regrets they have experienced in their years of experience in the whitetail woods. In typical Southern Ground fashion, we're not just simply going to tell you those stories. The guys try to take this opportunity to share the lessons they learned through the regrets. The things that made them better at the sport because of these experiences. Chances are that you've probably experienced some of the same scenarios, but if you haven't then maybe you'll learn something through their failures. We also give a few personal observations we had during the season while we were chasing gobblers We also discuss Jeff's COVID test experience, which is worth a listen all by itself! It's Time To Start Focusing on the "Little Guys" Jun 02, 2020
    Show notes

In this podcast, Frank and Matt discuss the foundation and start of life for many of the game species we all enjoy chasing. We address rumors and common misunderstandings that revolve around nesting, brood rearing, lactation and fawning. One of the common thoughts is that spring rains destroy nests from flooding or even flood and wash turkey poults into the mighty Mississippi River. This idea has spread and caused a lot of misunderstanding on how to best understand weather events during the Spring. It is not flooding that causes poor recruitment, it's the lack of a poult's ability to stay dry. Rain and cool nights cause hypothermia, this inability to regulate body heat ultimately causes the young birds to perish. In addition, fawns can be just as fragile. If you are trying to grow the biggest or baddest deer herd possible, it starts with healthy does, lactation, and quality fawning cover. Just because you see fawns on camera and your deer population isn't struggling like bobwhites, doesn't mean fawning habitat can't be improved. Be sure to give this podcast a listen! We need to collectively begin thinking of the spring as one of the most critical times in our game species life. Let's commit to solid education as it will guide our management in a more productive fashion. Enjoy.Learn.Share! #ForLoveoftheLand Land & Legacy is Powered by Simplecast

    Land & Legacy - Open Your Eyes, You're a Land Manager! Jun 02, 2020
    Show notes

The best tool a land manager can have is their own two eyes! Chainsaws, prescribed fire, tractors, drills, sprayers are all great, but if you don't see what needs to be seen, then the tools we do have will be misused. One of the largest problems we see when we tour farms is the lack of knowledge the landowner has of their given property. In many cases, the most time a landowner spends on the property is spent on a UTV, not their own two feet. To see what's happening on a property, you have to walk. Walk constantly, get off the roads, take the beaten path. If you spend 80% of our time on the roads, we miss 90% of the property and the resources the farm actually is offering. You have to monitor the property, trail cameras, food plots, and road systems only tell a small fraction of the story. In addition, do you terminate your food plots too early? Are you cutting the fall blend too short? We answer these questions as well this week. We hope you Enjoy.Learn.Share!
