    Ohio Huntsman - Ohio's 2020 Spring Turkey Harvest Jun 03, 2020
    Show notes

With turkey season coming to a close across the state, this week we discuss how the season went for us personally and also for Ohio as a whole. We look at the harvest data that was recently provided by the ODNR and compare that information to the previous spring in order to try and paint an accurate picture of how Spring Turkey season was for the majority of hunters. We also give a few personal observations we had during the season while we were chasing gobblers We also discuss Jeff's COVID test experience, which is worth a listen all by itself! Be sure to send us a message and let us know how you did in the turkey woods this year. It's Time To Start Focusing on the "Little Guys" Jun 02, 2020
    Show notes

In this podcast, Frank and Matt discuss the foundation and start of life for many of the game species we all enjoy chasing. We address rumors and common misunderstandings that revolve around nesting, brood rearing, lactation and fawning. One of the common thoughts is that spring rains destroy nests from flooding or even flood and wash turkey poults into the mighty Mississippi River. This idea has spread and caused a lot of misunderstanding on how to best understand weather events during the Spring. It is not flooding that causes poor recruitment, it's the lack of a poult's ability to stay dry. Rain and cool nights cause hypothermia, this inability to regulate body heat ultimately causes the young birds to perish. In addition, fawns can be just as fragile. If you are trying to grow the biggest or baddest deer herd possible, it starts with healthy does, lactation, and quality fawning cover. Just because you see fawns on camera and your deer population isn't struggling like bobwhites, doesn't mean fawning habitat can't be improved. Be sure to give this podcast a listen! We need to collectively begin thinking of the spring as one of the most critical times in our game species life. Let's commit to solid education as it will guide our management in a more productive fashion. Enjoy.Learn.Share! #ForLoveoftheLand Land & Legacy is Powered by Simplecast

    Land & Legacy - Open Your Eyes, You're a Land Manager! Jun 02, 2020
    Show notes

The best tool a land manager can have is their own two eyes! Chainsaws, prescribed fire, tractors, drills, sprayers are all great, but if you don't see what needs to be seen, then the tools we do have will be misused. One of the largest problems we see when we tour farms is the lack of knowledge the landowner has of their given property. In many cases, the most time a landowner spends on the property is spent on a UTV, not their own two feet. To see what's happening on a property, you have to walk. Walk constantly, get off the roads, take the beaten path. If you spend 80% of our time on the roads, we miss 90% of the property and the resources the farm actually is offering. You have to monitor the property, trail cameras, food plots, and road systems only tell a small fraction of the story. In addition, do you terminate your food plots too early? Are you cutting the fall blend too short? We answer these questions as well this week. We hope you Enjoy.Learn.Share! Missouri Woods & Water - Helping Missouri Vets Enjoy the Outdoors Jun 02, 2020
    Show notes

Just after celebrating Memorial Day, we have Tony Larson with MO Vets Outdoors on. MO Vets Outdoors is a VFW program formed to help Missouri veterans get out and hunt, fish, and just experience the outdoors in ways they might not have the had the chance to before. They host different events like fishing tournaments, coyote hunts, goose hunts, and many others to help raise money to be able to take some lucky vets on different hunts and trips. Missouri is the first state to start a program like this through the VFW and they have already been able to host over 51 events and have taken about 151 vets out to date. The program is still in its infancy so they are off to a great start. Tony also gets to talk about some of the awesome hunts and trips they have been able to take these Missouri vets on in the past year like turkey hunts, deer hunts, exotic sheep, and some things they are looking to do in the future. We even get him to talk about an awesome deer he harvested last year. Check out the MO Vets Outdoors page on Facebook to learn more about them and how you can help. They also have a raffle page for the organization where they raffle off cool items to help fund their events. Both pages are in the show links for ease or you can search those names on Facebook. Enjoy the show and remember what these men and women sacrifice for our freedoms. They deserve our respect and admiration. Southern Ground Hunting - Back To Deer Hunting with A Modern Day Fred Bear May 29, 2020
    Show notes

Begin DEER HUNTING podcasts in 3...2...1. Thanks for tuning into the Southern Ground Hunting podcast! As much as we all love turkey hunting, we're glad to be back talking about southern deer hunting. This week we're joined by Anthony and Luke Parker. You all know Luke, so he needs no introduction. His dad, however, is a one of a kind fella! Anthony is a many of many hats, including his Fred Bear hat which is where the title of this episode is drawn from. He's a traditional bow hunter, a certified archery instructor, "self-bow" builder, and one of the best taxidermists around. Born and raised in Alabama, Anthony's interest in traditional archery and taxidermy began at an early age. He tells us about his childhood, bringing dead animals home and skinning them in his closet. He also talks about his start in the world of traditional bows, as well as traditional bow building. As you can imagine, taxidermists have some pretty funny stories. In this episode, Anthony shares a story about a "dead" fox squirrel that decided he didn't want to be dead yet! Southern Ground Hunting is powered by Simple Cast.

N.F.C. - Simple Strategy Changes That Lead To Success May 29, 2020

Success is a relative term. Whether you want to fill the freezer, chase a higher caliber of buck, or target one specific buck this may be the episode for you. On this episode of the Nine Finger Chronicles, Dan and Bob Polanic talk about simple strategy changes that they have implemented over the years that have led them to having more encounters within shooting distance. Dan talks about how moving away from hunting field edges and refining his access routes led him to having more deer within shooting range. Bob talks about how consuming content that was more relatable to his environment and part of the country helped him make better decisions while in the woods. All this and much more, ENJOY! DIY Sportsman - Archery Deep Dive with Andy May May 28, 2020
    Show notes

On this Podcast, I talk with Andy May about all things archery with a bow hunting focus. Most people know Andy as a meticulous, detail oriented deer hunter, but his mindset works the same with archery. He actually started archery before becoming a bow hunter. We discuss various things on the equipment side of bow hunting, from his arrow building process to releases, peep sights, broadheads, vane configuration, proper stabilization, and bow fit to minimize the amount of pin float that you see at full draw. In addition to the equipment side of archery, we also talk at length about the mental side and the shooting process. Having struggled at times with target panic in the past, Andy explains exactly how he activates his release now based on advice from several professional shooters. Certain circumstances like fast shooting opportunities or high winds can create minor differences in how he activates the release, but everything stems back to a achieving a reliable, high-confidence shot. One thing Andy does that many people could likely benefit from is record data from most of his shooting sessions. That allows him to track trends over time to determine which combinations of gear actually provide the best forgiveness, instead of basing opinions on other reviews or good/bad days at the range.
