Ohio Huntsman - The Next Generation with Matt Butler Mar 17, 2021
    Show notes

This week on the show we talked to Matt Butler who is the author of Billy Goes Hunting. This book was written in response to his daughter being bullied at school for his love and passion for the outdoors and hunting. He explains how he, as a special forces officer in the army, ended up becoming a children's book author. We also discussed various strategies on how we think hunter recruitment can be increased. We also discuss how having a desire to be outdoors seems to be something that all kids are born with and then lose based on the environment that they are raised in. He also touches briefly on the struggles he faced in order to get the book published. Lastly, he spends some time discussing his future plans of developing a non-profit organization that specializes in introducing young children from single parents to hunting and then outdoors. Missouri Woods & Water - John V Mesh Memorial Scholarship Mar 16, 2021
    Show notes

This week we get to highlight a great organization that is dedicated to getting kids in the outdoors. On October 12th 2015, Kansas City Missouri firefighters John V Mesh and Larry Leggio tragically lost their lives fighting a fire. Shortly after that, John's brother, Jim Mesh and one of his best friends and brother firefighters John Sirna created the John V Mesh Memorial Scholarship. John loved the outdoors growing up and all the way through his life, so Jim and John dedicated themselves to making sure his legacy lives on by getting others into the outdoors to develop that same love. This organization sponsors many different events for children and gives scholarships to young people who may be pursuing a career dedicated to the outdoors. We were honored to sit down and talk with Jim and John and learn more about this great organization and a great man. This Standard Operating Procedure revolves around how to make the best impact in the most efficient way possible. We discuss during the podcast two different approaches we recommended on recent consulting trips on how to attack non-native invasive species such as bush honeysuckle, autumn olive, and multi-flora rose. In addition, we discuss a common theme of that many landowners take by not improving the property for fear that it help the neighbors, we break down this philosophy's flaws and how it could be contributing to your lack of success. Every acre needs attention! We hope you enjoy this podcast and learn that there is a "Standard Operating Procedure" for your property, do you know it? Are you aware of how to follow it? Huntavore - Wild Turkey Breast Mar 15, 2021
    Show notes

Focus today is on the Wild Turkey Breast. Large cut of meat, Thick at one end, that narrows to a point, and hides an inner tenderloin. The whole thing in nature is lean. Quick, fast, and powerful, the breast is the power muscle for flight for these birds. Not having the stamina for extended flight, the breast gets its light color from quick bursts of work, unlike the legs and thighs that do the bulk of the load, giving them the darker color and more pronounced flavor (that's another episode). When getting the bird in the field, it is worth your time to pluck the feathers and keep the skin attached. Any fat that the bird has will concentrate on the skin. Leaving it on while cooking the breast can give you the advantage to juicy white meat. The whole crown is a great family gathering size. Two lobes connected at the keel bone (breast bone) Being all the same texture and consistency, you can focus on the white meat without having to worry if the thighs get done. Season and brine to taste, in the oven covered at 375* for 45 minutes, then slow the oven to 250* for the remainder of the cook. Figure 10-15 minutes per pound total, Use Probe to keep eyes on temp. 150*-155* Cut the heat, and rest for 20 minutes. A favorite prep of Nick’s is a Marinated Tenderloin. You could add any marinade that you like, but in this step by step recipe, He goes with a Lemon Pepper approach that properly signals in spring: https://sportsmensnation.com/blog/recipe-marinated-wild-turkey-tenderloins Wilde Spice Co. Oklahoma Outdoors - The Okie Rig Is A New Way To Catch More Bass Mar 15, 2021
    Show notes

Spring is in the air and water temps are rising! If bass weren't on your mind already, they will be after this episode. Today John is joined by bass guide and lake Eufaula record holder Bill Wright. Bill has been bass fishing for over 60 years and in the early 2000's came up with a better way to fish a carolina rig. On a fishing trip with bass legend Jimmy Houston, the two coined the phrase "Okie Rig" and the name stuck. Bill starts with some basic tackle recommendations for those just getting into the sport, and then gives a great explanation of how bass use a lake throughout the year. John and Bill then jump into all things Okie Rig and how to fish it. If you have ever had a desire to catch more or bigger bass, this is the episode for you! DIY Sportsman - Spring Scouting Tips Mar 11, 2021
    Show notes

On today's podcast, we're going to try something a little different. Right now is absolutely prime time to be out in the woods doing some post-season scouting. Here in the Midwest, the snow is pretty much all melted in most places with the recent warm weather. I've been out in both Wisconsin and Iowa putting boots on the ground, and I will be back out every weekend from now until turkey season. For this episode, I've gone back through some of the guests we've had on historically who I've discussed post-season scouting with, and I've taken relevant snippets from each of those episodes. I think it's interesting because each guest has their own little spin based on the terrain they hunt and their style. DIY Sportsman is Powered by Simpleast
