Land & Legacy - Soil Health Series with Ag Consultant Mitt Wardlaw Mar 30, 2021
    Show notes

What do you do when you receive the results from your recent soil test? It's a question we certainly get all the time and we know it's a common problem for land managers. We sit down this week to discuss soil sampling, soil health fads, and best management practices to improve your soil fertility, grow healthier food plots, and avoid time consuming mistakes. Mitt is an owner of Southern Ag Consulting and assists crop farmers across the south to improve yields and limit costs. Their company has over 90 years of experience assisting landowners with crops, soil fertility, weed control, and many other practices to help improve crop yield. We walk through the steps of what to do once you receive the results from your soil tests. Mitt covers the steps he takes to make the quickest improvements on soil fertility and how in just one growing season he can change the soil's potential! We also discuss the difference between macronutrients and micronutrients and how you should understand them before working to improve them! Finally we discuss one of the biggest principles in soil health, liebig's law of the minimum. It's always important to ask tough questions about our practices, thoughts, and future plans and with soil health it's no different. If we improved the soil organic matter by 2% over ten years what would we notice happening? Would we notice any changes or better yet would we notice any improved health of our deer? These are tough questions we must answer before we waste time doing things that don't have great returns. #Forloveoftheland Land & Legacy is Powered by Simplecast

Southern Ground Hunting - Two Turkeys in Three Days | Alabama Public Land Turkey Hunting Mar 29, 2021
    Show notes

We're on cloud nine! Turkey season is here in the great state of Alabama, and Parker has had a productive week. After not hearing any gobbles in his home range for the first couple of hunts, Parker decided to try out a new area that is supposed to be full of gobbling turkeys. In this episode, you'll hear some of the things that he did to capitalize on the birds. He talks about how having a ton of grit is really his most productive method of hunting... if you work hard enough and don't get discouraged, eventually it'll work out. Going from a place with a heavy decline in turkey population, it's sometimes hard to be too aggressive for risk of possibly ruining one of the few opportunities you'll likely get all season. However, going to better areas has taught Parker a lot about what he can get away with in the turkey woods: crawling, scratching, heck even talking with a group of people (you'll find out). These tactics are important in the moment, but possibly will pay off in the future in less populated areas to really capitalize on low opportunity places. We hope you're having tons of luck in the woods so far this spring! It's just getting started! Southern Ground Hunting is powered by Simple Cast.

Huntavore - Wild Game Recipes with Jeff Benda Mar 29, 2021
    Show notes

Jeff Benda loves food. Growing up as a kid on an AirForce Base, he and his parents enjoyed their time at home in the kitchen. Whether it was making their own, or hearing about a great new restaurant to try, food was a common event. Jeff however couldn't realize his second dream of being an outdoors man until becoming an adult. As a kid, he watched fishing and sport shows Sunday morning before church, read familiar books like My Side of the Mountain. It wasn't till his friends invited him on a duck hunt back in 2002. Since then, Jeff has monopolized on his location in North Dakota being able to chase a whole host of animals from the Midwest and Western states. Recipe creation is a task I find to be challenging. Might be that I’m putting too much thought into relaying to the reader why certain steps are important, or that I am a natural presenter and hack my way through writing. Jeff offered some insight that a recipe is more of a creative expression and be played and messed with. Don't like spice, omit it. Want the fire? Add more. Whatever you change though, make sure to make a note of it. Jeff keeps a journal handy as he's in the kitchen. Another thing that Jeff does is actually read cookbooks. Old ones, new ones, wildgame or completely domestic. He draws inspiration from this reading and keeps his creative jive alive. Jeff recently published a mind blowing recipe of Jackalope Wellington. While I wish it was from an actual buck Jack, Jeff brough the backstrap of a cottontail and antelope together in a rich crowd pleaser. DIY Sportsman - Hunting From The Ground vs. Treestand Mar 25, 2021
    Show notes

Over the past several years, I've started incorporating more and more ground setups into my hunting routine. Sometimes they're intentional, while other times they're impromptu, but they are always situational. In this episode, I dive into what makes a set up better or worse for a ground hunt as opposed to a hunt from a tree. Certainly there are obvious scenarios in which there are no suitable trees where ground hunting makes sense. However, there are even times and situations where ground hunting in hardwoods could make sense. Once the location and scenario calls for ground hunting, there are definitely several things that can impact how good or poor the setup is on a micro level. Back cover, front cover, overhead cover, sun location, wind and thermal flips, and expected shot location all play a key role in whether or not you'll get picked off. Many of these lessons I've found out the hard way either hunting for deer or turkeys. Comfort plays a key role in preventing fidgeting, so I discuss the various seat and back support options that I've found to work best over the years. DIY Sportsman is Powered by Simplecast
