In a perfect world, every Dallas Cowboys draft pick would enter the NFL and provide value commensurate with their draft slot, but that rarely (if ever) happens.

Not all draft picks are created equal. In theory, the best players are selected first, meaning the expected value added by a first-round pick should exceed that of a second-round pick and so on. So the expectations of each prospect are based upon where they are selected.

The state of the Rangers’ player-development system was driven home last week.

The lower levels of the system are productive, but there is nothing close to being ready to help the major-league team.

When the Rangers needed a starter at Seattle on Thursday, they went with left-hander Taylor Hearn, the No. 5 prospect in the Dallas Morning News’ rankings. Hearn, with only four starts at Triple-A Nashville, did not get out of the first inning and will miss about three weeks because of elbow inflammation.

Two weeks later, the Stars find themselves in the same position: trailing in a playoff series after a Game 3 loss at home.

The Stars lost to St. Louis 4-3 on Monday night in Game 3 of their second-round series, giving the Blues a 2-1 series lead after the teams split a pair of games in Missouri last week. It's the same situation Dallas faced in the first round against the Predators, and they followed up a Game 3 loss with three straight wins to eliminate Nashville.

Now, the Predators have been extinguished. A new challenge awaits the Stars later this week.
