    Show notes

Are you happy with the systems you work in as a social worker? Are you satisfied with how the political system is serving your clients? Not sure what to do or where to start? Then this episode is for you!

Dr. Victor Manalo is all about macro work! He shares the best way social workers can begin to get involved in a career in policy and what we can do TODAY to advocate for the changes needed in our world.

He shares his personal story of how he utilized his relationships and approached his local city council members to create a mentorship program for foster youth.

If you want to see change this is how to do it in 3 steps:

    1. Get started, do SOMETHING today.

    2. Find and use your resources

    3. Connect with someone already doing it and learn from them.

This is how can a social worker gets started in political advocacy

    1. Create a relationship with your city council officials

    2. Don’t go to a city council meeting and expect results

    3. Do research on city council members, find commonality and reach out

    4. Offer your help, assistance, or ways you can collaborate with them

Take it a step further and get started in politics, these are his tips:

    1. Connect with elected officials

    2. Volunteer with a campaign, phone banking, register to vote (Election year is the perfect time!)

    3. Work for your local office

    4. Get involved with advocacy organizations

    5. Network with others doing the work you want to do, connect with them.

Victor Manalo also shares about his leadership role with NASW. The powerful part of NASW is it’s is a membership organization and is as responsive as its members. Meaning, if you want to get involved and create change, there is a space for you! There are opportunities to create the NASW that we need going forward.

Revolutionizing Social Work with NASW-NYS Sep 14, 2020
    Show notes

When discussing anti-racism it’s often told of non-BIPOC social workers to "Do the work", what does that actually mean? We also talk about the new Anti-Racism Initiative spearheaded by NASW-NYS which are free & open to everyone (Sept 29 – next townhall!) Samantha Fletcher, Ph.D., MSW, shares the top reasons on why social workers should be part of something bigger than themselves and join NASW. If you’re not feeling like your local chapter is doing enough, she also shares the inside scoop on how can Social Workers approach their own local chapters to start this work where they are. Instagram @SocialWorkersRise Email: SocialWorkersRise@gmail.com https://www.socialworkersrise.com/ Learn More about Sara; keep reading below… Samantha Fletcher earned a B.A. in Sociology at the University of Tulsa in 2000. Before returning to school to earn a master’s and Ph.D. in Social Work at the University at Albany, she worked for over a decade in human services including at a family law firm, crisis pregnancy center, Islamic school and running an independent business. While Samantha was pursing her Ph.D., she also served as the project coordinator and senior research assistant for the PFC Joseph P. Dwyer Statewide Veteran Peer Support Program evaluation. She supervised program development and implementation for 16 non-profit county programs focused on peer delivered services including individual mentoring, engagement in social activities, support groups, volunteerism, community education and partnership, and referral to existing veteran services. Samantha also served as the Assistant Dean of Academic Programs and the Director of Admissions in the School of Social Welfare at the University at Albany. In this position, she worked on a diverse team of administrators and faculty to provide a quality education for bachelor, master, and doctoral social work students. Samantha also partnered with the Assistant Dean of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion to create a social justice group for students, faculty, and staff. The purpose of this group is to bring a deeper consciousness to social injustice (with an emphasis on critically examining inequality at multiple levels) and promote a safe, reflective environment where members can explore personal assumptions, biases, values and beliefs. By promoting a sense of responsibility for all participants to become change agents, participation in the group can help those entering the social work profession make inclusiveness a habit in their practice and everyday life. Samantha became the Executive Director of the National Association of Social Workers, New York State Chapter in September 2019. Calling her out! Overcome Imposter Syndrome Jul 01, 2020
    Show notes

This week, I talk with Harleny Vasquez, MSW about how we get trapped in a cycle of imposter syndrome and how to break free of that cycle.

She first shares her inspiring story of being raised in an environment with a lack of resources but found her drive, and her true WHY for her success. She refused to let anything get in her way of crushing her goals and working in so many different areas of social work.

We then talk about what imposter syndrome is, who it effects, the cycle of it, and how to overcome it.

Once we can identify what it looks like, we can begin to anticipate it and change our actions. The cycle of imposter syndrome starts with our limiting beliefs which leads to the story we tell ourselves, which then turns into self sabotaging behavior. This self-sabotage feeds into our ongoing limiting beliefs and the cycle continues.

Even when we recognize this cycle, imposter syndrome never truly goes away for anyone, we develop better and stronger tools for managing it, and keeping it out of our way.

Harleny ends with some POWERFUL activities to change our negative thinking and control our imposter syndrome so we can pursue our success.

    1. Call her out - Name your imposter syndrome. (BYE HATER!)

    2. Identify your limiting beliefs

    3. Change your negative limiting beliefs

    4. Reframe them into positives

    5. Set Goals with timelines

    6. Say your biggest fears out loud or write them down.

"Social work is what you make it; its what u bring to the table."

Going the therapy route? LISTEN IN! Jun 22, 2020
    Show notes

In this episode, I talk with Lesly Rodriguez, MSW, ACSW, and a USC alum! She has years of experience with direct clinical practice and theory mastery. We discuss the world of social work, where we have been, where we are going, and how our culture is shifting in this moment!

Historically, the social work field has normalized burnout and a lack of emotional support and specialized knowledge after grad school is all too common. I'm not okay with this and am making it my mission to see that new social workers have a different experience! I'm striving to create a community where clinical social workers feel like they have the resources and tools they need to feel CONFIDENT when helping clients through the therapeutic process and they have the emotional support they need for guidance and to be the best they can be.

I am starting this by helping social workers who are new to the field and who want to purse the clinical route. Many feel unsure of their clinical skills, need to fine-tune their documentation, and want to learn from others in the field who are actually DOING the work.

If this sounds like you, then the Essentials for Future Therapists is created specially for you! Listen in to hear more, see if you relate to our stories at all, and shoot me a DM in Instagram to be added to the VIP (Very Interested Professionals) List from some $$ off!

I also have an announcement for you at the very end of the episode, so be sure to listen to the end!

Everyone needs to hear this, especially as a social worker already helping so many other people. We need to make ourselves a priority too.
