114: Tangled and Trials of the Temple Mar 17, 2016

Show notes

What do Tangled and Trials of the Temple have in common? Turns out Kylo Ren and Rapunzel are best friends!

That’s not true. All of it.

But it IS true that the Disney Cruise Line’s Disney Magic has a NEW Tangled: The Musical show! Chickaphant’s parents tell us all about it. New music composed by Alan Menken! Ruffians! Thugs! And a light-up Pascal with Snuggly Duckling mug? Sign me up!

March 10th was Sarah’s birthday! She made it an excuse to do a Disney day and FINALLY complete a Disneyland Easter Egg Hunt 3 years in the making. Richard and Sarah were able to ride the NEW Luigi’s Rollicking Roadsters and we also saw a NEW chilling addition to Jedi Training: Trials Of The Temple. Now where does this fit in the new Star Wars Canon? At dinner we got into a heavy debate with friends and Skywalkers Anthony Fox, Rebecca Goodman, Georgia Peach & Jeff Peterson. If you want to weigh in, please tweet at us @SkywalkingPod!

Step In Time: THE APPLE DUMPLING GANG with Disney Vault Talk Mar 09, 2016

Show notes

STEP IN TIME: Remembering Disney’s Matinee Movies is back and this time we are celebrating the 40th anniversary of the 1975 classic film - Walt Disney’s THE APPLE DUMPLING GANG! J

oining us on this journey to the old west are special guests Steve Glosson and Teresa Delgado of Disney Vault Talk. They bring their brand of fun and fond memories to the conversation while Richard reminisces about his first childhood crush, Celia (Stacy Manning), and Sarah watches the film for the first time in her life.

For anyone else who has not seen this film yet or hasn’t seen it in a while, here is a refresher on THE APPLE DUMPLING GANG. Bill Bixby (The Incredible Hulk) plays Russell Donovan, a slick gambler duped into taking care of a trio of mischievous orphans named Bobby, Cloves and Celia. Meanwhile, outlaw wanna-be’s Tim Conway (The Carol Burnett Show) and Don Knotts (Andy Griffith Show, The Incredible Mr. Limpet) are out to rob anyone they think has anything worth stealing. Set in the Old West during The California Gold Rush, it’s a fun ride.

The children miraculously strike it rich, but that’s when bad guys come out of the woodwork to steal the gold. It’s up to The Apple Dumpling Gang to keep it, and their home with Russell Donovan, safe and sound. Hilarity ensues, and so does our conversation. Exactly how does a show roll from The Apple Dumpling Gang into the 80’s sex-romp comedy, Porkey’s?

STEP IN TIME: Remembering Disney's Matinee Movies is a monthly spin-off show where we look back at the Disney live-action films of yesteryear. If you are already subscribed to Skywalking Through Neverland - do nothing! This show will appear in your feed.

113: Skywalking Behind-The-Scenes of ZOOTOPIA Mar 03, 2016

Show notes

With the imminent release of Disney’s ZOOTOPIA on March 4th, it's the perfect time to bring you Behind-The-Scenes stories from the Press Day Sarah attended at Walt Disney Animation Studios. We had press roundtables with the Directors, Writers, Production Designers and Character Designers/Animators of ZOOTOPIA. She’ll go into some amazing stories, fun facts and we’ll hear audio from the filmmakers themselves.

Sarah was able to see ZOOTOPIA at a special #DisneyInfinityNEXT early screening, so she will give her Spoiler-Free review. She also got to meet Allison Petreck of Disney Infinity Toy Box TV. And then let’s get into NEW Disney Infinity characters, Marvel Battlegrounds Playset and more!

Richard takes on the farce that was the Oscars. No awards for The Force Awakens?? What is this world coming to? Host Chris Rock had to tap-dance around #OscarsSoWhite and he really did a quick step. As always we have enlightening clips from The Oscars as well as media surrounding the event.

We also have shout outs, and the Skywalker of the Week!

111: Watching Star Wars in a Whole New Way Feb 18, 2016

Show notes

Have you gone back to watch the 6 films of the Star Wars Saga after seeing The Force Awakens? What did you think? What did you feel? With all the new movies, comics, novels and TV shows that fill in gaps or show a different POV, it can change the way we look at the films. Richard and Sarah explore those changes with special guests Bryan Young (Full of Sith, Starwars.com) and Chris Salton (Brews and Blasters, The Collector's Hutt). You’ll never watch Han and Leia’s love scene the same way again! (30:37)

Next up, Impressions: The Music of Star Wars Rebels, where we analyze Kevin Kiner's score. On this episode we analyze "Legends of the Lasat" with our special guest, Tricia Barr (Fangirls Going Rogue, FANgirl Blog). This was the episode where our Ghost crew encountered an anomaly on the edge of known space, and had to use Zeb’s leadership to get through. The music was so unusual and engaging, with those bare strings, we HAD to talk about it. (1:37:15)

Show notes

Come with us on our day off at Disneyland! The day begins with a trip to…Skellig Michael? That’s right, before we take you with us to Disneyland, we spoke with Bryce and Carly Yelverton about their amazing experience on Skellig Michael, which is where Luke Skywalker appears at the end of STAR WARS: THE FORCE AWAKENS. The island is far off the coast of Ireland, and the journey there is half the fun. (9:00)

And now back to Disneyland! Come with us as we visit Kylo Ren, Boba Fett and Chewbacca, and check out February’s new AP Days. We also recap Jedi Training Academy: Trials Of The Temple. Is The Seventh Sister as awesome as in pictures? Listen and find out. (49:00)

Classic Marvel STAR WARS Comics #7 with Randy Martinez Jan 28, 2016

Show notes

"At last! Beyond The Movie! Beyond the Galaxy!" as it says on the cover of each issue of the Marvel Star Wars comics from 1978. We are taking our Classic Marvel Star Wars Comics segment and spinning it off into its own show!

If you are a new listener to the Skywalking Through Neverland growing podcast Empire, what we do is take you through each issue of the vintage series from the 70s and 80s! Star Wars Artist Randy Martinez will be joining us for every episode, lending his artistic and nostalgic wisdom to the discussion. Richard also remembers reading these comics as a kid, but Sarah is younger than the comics themselves, and is the voice of the newbie. All three create a fun dynamic as we discuss word such as "FORP!" "GRONK!" and "Begone, Defilers of the Sacred Way!"

In this episode we are diving into Star Wars #7: New Planets, New Perils!

Date: October 11, 1977

Writer / Editor: Roy Thomas

Illustrator: Howard Chaykin

Synopsis: In this issue, After bidding farewell to their Rebel friends, Han Solo and Chewbacca set out to return to Tatooine to pay off their debt to Jabba the Hutt. En route there, they are hijacked by space pirates and someone who can really rock a unitard, Crimson Jack and his gang of thugs. The pirates take the reward money given to Han and Chewbacca by the Rebel Alliance for rescuing Princess Leia Organa. Forced to lay low because they can't pay Jabba, the two seek refuge on the planet Aduba-3.

Show notes

We have the complete pleasure of bringing you a wonderful conversation with STAR WARS: THE FORCE AWAKENS actors and power couple Gloria and Vincent Garcia. They were on set for a full month as they shot the exciting opening scene of the film. Gloria Garcia was lucky enough to play the first female you see, looking fiercely protective of her village as Poe runs behind her to his X-Wing. Their energy matched our own and it’s a conversation not to be missed. (20:17)

Go Behind-The-Scenes with Ford Riley, the executive producer on the NEW Disney Junior series based on The Lion King - THE LION GUARD. He joins us to talk about the conception of the show, the story and how it was based on his children. We’ve seen a few preview episodes and WOW! The animation, story and characters are all great. Sarah is especially in love with the cheetah, Fuli, and it’s a fun conversation. THE LION GUARD premieres on The Disney Channel on January 15th - make sure to check it out. (1:22:08)
