    She’s Talkin’ Money

You make good money. You save. You contribute to retirement. On paper, you are doing well. So why do you still feel unsure whether you are making the right decisions with your money?

She’s Talkin’ Money is the personal finance podcast for women who have outgrown basic budgeting advice and want more clarity about what comes next.

Hosted by financial planner and money expert Shari Rash, the show helps you understand how to put your money to work through smarter investing, retirement planning, saving, tax strategy, and intentional spending.

You will also hear honest conversations about the emotional side of money: fear, guilt, comparison, financial independence, over-saving, and why earning more does not always make you feel more secure.

Expect practical solo episodes, expert conversations, and real money questions designed to help you stop second-guessing yourself and start making financial decisions with more confidence.

Because doing well on paper should feel good in real life, too.

Previously known as Everyone’s Talkin’ Money.

Asheville: The Other Music City Aug 31, 2018
    Show notes

We always get the question; where is your favorite place you’ve traveled recently? Currently, one of our favorite places we’ve traveled this year has to be Asheville, North Carolina. If Portland and Nashville would have made a kid, it might be Asheville. With beautiful mountain scenery, Asheville has it all: one of the first and best beer cultures, a booming food haven and a thriving music scene. Pretty much all the boxes we like to check in any city!

    This Podcast Episode:

Join us for this special travel episode of Millennial Money, as we explore the other music city. Showing us around their city of Asheville are three locals and new friends of the podcast.

We have Graham Sharpe of the band Steep Canyon Rangers, who are currently opening for Steve Martin and Martin Short’s national tour talks about the eclectic music scene and what draws people to Asheville these days.

Caroline Roy, the owner of Asheville hot spot Biscuit Head, chats about why Asheville is “the” town to visit and start a business in.

To wrap up our tour of Asheville, Chef Mike Moore of Aux Bar gives us some insight into the booming food scene and some tips on where to find some underground music.

My co-host for the podcast is my husband, Jeff Game, a travel, and music journalist that's always on the hunt for a good story to tell.

How to Launch a Successful Startup with Jason from Payclub Aug 28, 2018
    Show notes

I started my first business in college and I can tell that it’s a combination of fun and sheer terror. There’s so much to learn and so much to do every inch of the way. I wouldn’t trade it for anything though. I think it’s important to share lots of different startup/ entrepreneurial stories on the podcast. Meet Jason Rieger, CEO + co-founder of Payclub. He’s taken the idea of revolutionizing how groups collect money in an app and launched his business Payclub this year. No matter where you are on your entrepreneur journey, Jason’s story is sure to inspire.

    Questions I Ask

    • What do you think are some of the most impactful lessons you’ve learned as a millennial entrepreneur starting your company Payclub from scratch?
    • What’s been your experience raising money for a startup – like no b/s? How feasible is it for a young startup?
    • So Payclub is entering a moderately crowded fin tech payment space…this may seem like a silly question or obvious, but what’s happening that shifting how millennials in particular pay for things?
    • When you were creating Payclub…walk me through the process you went through to design a unique app that could stand up against competitors?

    You’ll Learn

    • How to deal with the ebb & flow of money as an entrepreneur
    • How do you raise money as a startup & cut through the noise
    • Why you need to build a solid network now
    • How Payclub is helping millennials collect money in a group seamlessly and easily
    • Why incubators are key as a startup

Finding Your True Voice with Ry Bradley Aug 24, 2018
    Show notes

I want to introduce you guys to Ry Bradley. He’s a California-based and Hawaiian-reared singer/songwriter Ry Bradley is out to break that Nashville country music stereotype mold that holds back so many singers from blossoming into true artists.

Ry has a brand new openly personal, yet rocking album, Everything I’ve Got, including the song “Next Aldean Show,” which not only pays tribute to the shooting victims of the Las Vegas Route 91 Music Festival last year, all proceeds go to the survivors and family members. Ry is also involved in Women in Rock event, and recently held his own rock and roll camp for young musicians in Norway.

    On This Episode

We spoke with the very down-to-earth young star from his home in Orange County, California. Bradley opened up about how splitting time as a kid of divorce in Hawaii and California shaped his musical pallet and he’s sharing with you what it takes to carve your own path in life – which I’m going to add no matter what your bank account says – money is just a number and you’ve got stuff you’re supposed to do in life regardless of that number.

    Topics We Talked About

    • Being a millennial
    • Always giving back, helping to make the world a better place
    • Carving your own path in music and life
    • Vegas shooting, raising money for victims and their families
    • Women in Rock event in September
    • Rock n Roll Camp in Norway – YES!

The Power of Small Daily Money Habits with Clarity Money + Ask Shannah Aug 21, 2018
    Show notes

We face a new type of reality when it comes to managing our finances. From mounting student loan debt, keeping track of all subscription services like Netflix and Spotify and more simply, trying to pay rent and buy groceries -- it's overwhelming to figure out where to start.

One of my fav money management/budgeting apps is Clarity Money. I use it myself (I'm a big fan) and went straight to Colin Kennedy, the Chief Operating Officer & Revenue Officer of Clarity Money to explore the power of small daily money habits and how you can use them to empower your money.

    Episode Details:

There are a million apps on the market to manage your money and budget more effectively. I've tried them all myself and one that has found a permanent home on my phone is Clarity Money. It really is different than most of the budgeting & saving apps and has made a big difference in how I manage my money every day.

I was excited to have Colin from Clarity Money on this episode to dig beneath the surface of the app and talk about how you can use the concept of daily money habits to revolutionize your finances. Yes, I'm talking game-changing perspectives here.

Check out Clarity Money if you aren't bff's yet

Blockchain 101 & How It Will Impact Your Future Wallet With Kendi Lane Aug 17, 2018
    Show notes

Blockchain, cryptocurrency, bitcoin - say what? There are a lot of confusing terms out there, and I wanted to get to the bottom of it. We have all heard about bitcoin - it was on the tip of everyone's tongue a few months ago and people were investing in it that have never even invested in their 401(k) or IRA (yikes). What about blockchain - the technology that needed to exist before bitcoin? I think it's time to roll up our sleeves and figure this out.

    On This Podcast Episode:

Kendi joined us on the podcast way back in November 2017 talking all things bitcoin. If you haven't taken a listen to that episode, you need to!

Led by Bitcoin and Ether, cryptocurrencies have lost 10% of their combined value over the last week. Bitcoin on Tuesday dropped 4.5%, and Ethereum — after dropping 17% on Monday — fell another 7% on Tuesday. The total market value of cryptocurrencies worldwide is now at its lowest since November, according to The Wall Street Journal.

So, is this technology something you should put your money into and how will it impact your future wallet (because it isn't going anywhere). Kendi is a force to be reckoned with and a super smart chic who knows her stuff when it comes to blockchain and the perfect millennial expert to school us all.

Ask Shannah: Dealing with Student Loans and Debt Aug 14, 2018
    Show notes

In this Ask Shannah episode, I'm tackling two complex questions about student loans. Everything from borrowing money from your 401(k) to pay off your student loans, to dealing with student loan debt when you're in a relationship.

    In This Podcast Episode:

Thanks for all the great #AskShannah questions that are coming in. As always, remember you can always submit a question anonymously so I won't disclose your name when I'm reading over the question.

I'm covering two questions on this episode that I think most of us could relate to in some way. As a reminder, they call this personal finance because it is just that - personal. When you're making a money decision, you should weigh the pros and cons and then come to a decision that feels good to you and makes sense based on your lifestyle.

    • My question to you is, what benefits (or drawbacks) could there be if I were to take a loan from my 401(k) to pay off my student loans?

    • Which leads me to my question.. Am I wrong to think that having him put some money in a high yield savings account, could help him to pay off his student loans faster due to compounding growth?

Tune in to hear my thoughts and feel free to send me your own #AskShannah question for a future episode.

    Show notes

“Inspire Happy” is the musical mantra that the young and rising band Willow City are bringing to music-listening masses with their infectious Americana folk-pop songwriting and small-town love your neighbor like yourself kind of vibes. Oh, and they just happen to all be brothers and sister.

This family band of Beecher, Ezra, Liza and youngest Asa recently released their ambitious new self-titled album.

    On This Podcast Episode:

Jeff, Millennial Money's music guru, sat down to talk with brothers Ezra and Beecher Proch of Willow City from their home in Texas to chat about their love of spreading happiness through music and the new album, and we talked about why millennials these days can get a bad rap from older generations.

This is an episode to inspire you to take control of your own life and chase after your dreams - no matter what the critics say. You've got one life to live, and Ezra and Beecher will inspire you to be the best version of yourself. Oh, and their music is pretty awesome too.

The Gap Between The LGBTQ Community & Financial Planning With The Debt Free Guys Aug 07, 2018
    Show notes

There is a real gap between the LGBTQ community and financial planning and there's no way to mask it. I have to admit, there were some shocking stats that David and John from The Debt Free Guys talked about on this podcast episode that blew my mind. I didn't know that in many states just having a picture up in your office or on your desk at work if you're part of the LGBTQ community could come with heavy financial consequences like losing your job. So, I wanted to find out, why is it that the LGBTQ community is overlooked by the financial industry.

    On This Podcast Episode:

David and John from The Debt Free Guys recently wrote an article for GoBankingRates about why the financial services industry needed more LGBTQ people and I knew they had to be a guest on the show. I've received a lot of emails with Ask Shannah questions from listeners who feel like they can't relate to financial advice, are a part of the LGBTQ community, and don't know where to turn.

In this episode, we will offer some resources, advice, and real talk on this subject.

Even if you aren't part of this community, this episode will open your eyes to some of the injustice that members of this community face and the financial ramifications of being overlooked and discounted for years.

Money Wisdom From My Dad (And He's Pretty Smart) Aug 03, 2018
    Show notes

My dad is somewhat of a legend in the financial services world. He's been helping people for well over 40 years now and is beloved for his personality and intent on always putting clients needs before his. I know him as Dad and the person who taught me almost everything I know about personal finance.

    On This Podcast Episode:

My Dad, Stan, is joining us for a lively discussion about the advice he has about how to be smart with your money in your twenties and thirties. We'll also talk about the difference between perceptions of money when he was in his twenties versus now - which is always a fun topic for me.

    Dad's top advice:

    • Save for emergencies (and save more than you think)
    • Invest in your 401(k) and don't touch the money
    • Cover your risks, but only if you have a strong ER fund
    • Don't be afraid to try and learn when it comes to smart money moves
