SDH 410: Do You Need to Change Your Circumstances, Your Thoughts, or Both? Sep 28, 2020
    Show notes

Today I want to dive into whether you need to change your circumstances, your thoughts or both? We’ll be talking about how to determine when to own your reality as truth instead of trying to change it with your thoughts, when to coach yourself to change the way you think to influence your circumstances and when you might need to do both.

What is a circumstance? A circumstance is a fact or condition connected with or relevant to an event or action.

An example of a circumstance maybe that...it is a fact that you have a full-time Corporate job. You having a corporate job is a fact, it is a circumstance in your life.

If you make $60,000 a year, that is a fact. What isn’t a fact is “I only make $60,000 and it isn’t a lot of money.”

The “It isn’t a lot of money” is a thought you have about the circumstance, the fact itself.

Another example of a circumstance is that you have 24 hours in a day. Another one is that you may have five hours a week dedicated to working on your business - that is a fact. Your brain may want to have a thought and say, “I don’t have that much time, I only have 5 hours a week to work on my business.”

Another example is you may have a to-do list with 15 things-to-do on it. The 15 things become your circumstance in this example. Your thought maybe, “I’m so stressed out right now, I have no time, I have so many things to do.” Your to-do list doesn’t stress you out, it is the thoughts you have around your to-do list.

You don’t want to confuse a circumstance for a thought and vice versa.

You might also think that your job stresses you out and assume that if you change your job, you’ll no longer be stressed. That by changing your circumstance, you’ll all of a sudden get rid of the stress. But here’s the thing, if you don’t work on your thoughts, you may always be stressed regardless of which job you take.

Be careful of assuming that by quitting your Corporate job and having your own business your challenges and stress will go away. Is it possible though that a job change could reduce the stress that maybe isn’t caused by thoughts? Yes.

For example, I worked at Target in stores right out of college. It was a super stressful job. Part of it being stressful was the job itself and part was caused by the thoughts I had during that time. After 13 months of working at Target, I found my bridge job. I started working at Wells Fargo through a third-party agency as a recruiter. My circumstance changed and yes, the majority of stress did go away, but I still had to work on my thoughts.

An example of where when you change the circumstance but realize it is actually about the thoughts you think can be from having a to-do list that never ends. You cross the last thing off but then one more thing gets put on there so you’re in a constant stress loop. Completing the list, oh my gosh another thing I need to do, crossing it off, then one more thing. Let me say, I actually don’t keep a to-do list anymore, I calendar. Meaning I put everything I need to do on the calendar vs a “never-ending to-do list,” more on that in another episode.

When you start and run your business there will be multiple priorities vying for your attention at once and it can get extremely overwhelming if you let it. You may find yourself rushing to get past the stage of business you’re in because you may think that once I get to X in my business, I can relax and think that “over there” is better. But once you get over there, you start thinking that another over there is better so you’re in a constant state of rushing and avoiding where you’re at. This would be an opportunity to change your thoughts vs thinking you need to change your circumstance.

The danger of ignoring the circumstance for truth and only focusing on changing your thoughts could cause you to find yourself out of alignment and flow. There is a difference between grinding and feeling hard vs being in flow and experiencing challenging work that supports your path.

This is why there isn’t a one size fits all strategy for every situation, kind of like financial planning. Meaning, it isn’t always about changing your circumstances or changing your thoughts...it could be both. Everyone has a different situation and requires a different strategy. But regardless of the strategy though, there usually is an underlying approach or process to it.

    1. Separate the circumstance (the fact) from the thought.
    2. Assess and be honest with yourself on what you can own from a thinking standpoint.
    3. Own what feels good and what your intuition is telling you.

SDH 408: 7 Things You Don’t Need When Starting Your Business Sep 21, 2020
    Show notes

After interviewing hundreds of women on this podcast and witnessing my clients and colleagues build incredible businesses, these are 7 things that you may think you need to get started but don’t.

Thinking you need these things is what is keeping you stuck and in procrastination mode…

    • An expensive logo.
    • A flashy website.
    • Complicated contracts.
    • Years of experience doing said thing.
    • Thousands of followers.
    • Overwhelming tech.
    • An email list with thousands of subscribers.

    An expensive logo.

When you’re first getting started and offering services and still figuring out what you want to do, your logo (I believe matters but not as much as you think). Logos can sometimes cost you anywhere from $250-$300, plus the time it takes you to find a designer, get your logo produced is time you could be spending marketing your business and landing clients. Potential clients are more focused on your ability to deliver results. Now, if you are a graphic designer, then yes, your logo needs to represent your skill level. If you’re starting a VA business, copywriting editing business, coaching business your logo may not matter as much as you think it does. I’ve hired contractors who did not have a logo because their actions and how they communicated in an email were more important. Here’s what to do instead. Spend 30 minutes researching logos by visiting websites and identify what it is that you like about them. Then create a free Canva account and click “create a design,” select “Instagram post,” and start putting some things together. Don’t spend too much time trying to make it perfect. In this case, done, is better than perfect. Click here to sign up for a free Canva account.

    A flashy website.

You do not need a flashy website to start taking action on your business (that is of course unless you are a website designer, then you’ll want a website). But the truth is, there are lots of things you can do to get your business started and landing clients without having a website. I’ve seen time and time again so many women delay taking action because they think in order to get started they need a website. That thinking causes overwhelm and procrastination. Here are a few other things you can do instead: 1) Create a Facebook business page. This can serve as your storefront. It is much easier and quicker to get up and running. 2) Start an Instagram account and begin to share meaningful content that attracts your ideal customer. 3) In addition to doing one of the previous two mentioned and depending upon your business, launch a free Facebook group that helps nurture your ideal clients. Bonus! You can set up 3 different questions to ask them as they request to join your group and one of them can be their email address so you can nurture them when you get your email list set up. The whole point is not having to delay taking action.

    Complicated contracts.

Let me first start by saying, I am not a lawyer and any information regarding legal that I’m about to share is based on my own experience. First, to incorporate your business, there are plenty of websites that will do this entire process for you in any state. Second, when it comes to contracts in your business there are plenty of affordable resources out there to help get you started to like The Contract Vault. You can find all of these resources on the She Did It Her Way website by clicking “Resources” and selecting “Start a Business.”

    Years of experience.

Depending upon what it is that you want to do, it most likely doesn’t require you to have done years of experience doing it. If you’re great at designing websites and you’ve been doing it for 3 months, there is no said amount of time or years of experience you need in order to teach others how to do it or offer that as a service. The other day I was playing tennis and next to the court I was playing on were very experienced tennis players. In my mind I thought, I wonder if I asked one of them if I could pay them to give me lessons what would his response be? Then I thought about how he might say “Oh I’m not a coach” and think to himself, “I’m not experienced enough to be a coach.” When in reality it wouldn’t have mattered to me because he is one step ahead of where I am. If you’re ahead or more advanced, either by one step or multiple steps, then you can help someone.

    Thousands of followers.

You don’t need thousands of followers in order to have a financially stable business that replaces your corporate income and then some. If you have 500 people in your Facebook group or followers on Instagram and they’re the right people and they’re engaged, that is all you need. Sometimes we focus on getting ALL the followers and folks on your email list and into our Facebook group that we lose sight of them as individuals, and that is what matters.

    Overwhelming tech.

K.I.S.S. It. Keep it super simple. When you’re just starting out, keep it as simple as humanly possible as you can. If you want to coach people on a certain topic, I recommend starting with a Facebook group and expanding to Instagram. If you want to offer services, I recommend starting with Instagram.

An email list with thousands of subscribers

While having a massive email list does help the growth of your business long-term, when you’re first getting started and finding clients, again, you don’t need a massive list, you need to get in front of the right people. Once you make contact, you can nurture those relationships.

A few things you do need:

    • An idea of who you want to work with
    • The services you want to offer
    • The result your clients receive by working with you
    • A place where you’re going to create content. Depending upon your business this may vary but I’ve found Instagram to be a great place to get started when creating content and your brand.

The key takeaway from today’s episode is to always find the path of least resistance when starting a business. If building a website creates roadblocks, slows you down, and gets in the way of you taking the next step you need to in order start your business, ask yourself, “How can I find an easier way to take the place of my website? Do I need a website in order to land clients?”

SDH 407: The Journey of Building A Community of 50k+ Members With Natalie Franke, Founder of Rising Tide Society Sep 17, 2020
    Show notes

Welcome back to another episode of the She Did It Her Way podcast! And today is no exception of someone who has gone out and done it their way. I'm so excited to bring to you Natalie Franke, who is the Head of Community at HoneyBook and co-founder of the Rising Tide. Born out of her 7-year journey as a freelance photographer, Natalie built the Rising Tide to give solopreneurs the resources and support they need to be successful in their business. Natalie and the Rising Tide joined forces with HoneyBook in 2015 and today she leads a community of 75K+ creative entrepreneurs and freelancers. Natalie has been featured in the New York Times, Forbes, NPR, Bustle, and others. She studied neuroscience and the psychology of seeing at the University of Pennsylvania.

Her journey as a freelancer started when her mom gave her a camera, prior to that point in her life, she envisioned her career taking place likely in corporate America, moving to New York and working in the big city of Philadelphia. When her mom gave her first camera, everything that she thought she knew about what she wanted to do with her life came and just unraveled in front of her. She fell in love with the ability to capture images, emotion and being creative. So from senior year of high school all through the senior year of college, she started photographing portraits and when she graduated she was photographing almost 30 weddings per year.

In 2014 about two years out of college, Natalie had hit a lot of the goals that she had set for herself and her business. She was financially stable as a business owner, bringing in well over six figures, and she had a really loyal clientele but found herself incredibly isolated and incredibly lonely. And so right around 2015 she started to think about how to build communities for the very first time. It was just a thought of, "Hey, can I start, you know, cultivating a community in my hometown of Annapolis, Maryland?, Can I start getting these small business owners together? Can we sit down around a table side by side?"

Natalie, her husband, and their friends, Davey and Krista co-founded, at the time, a small coffee meet-up in their hometown. So that's where it started it rapidly expanded and grew because the pain was not just experienced by her and not just experienced by business owners in Annapolis, but the community members all across the world. And so Rising Tide went from one meetup to 12, to a hundred to now over 400 meetups that happen around the world, both in-person and online. And they have grown this community alongside HoneyBook for the past four years.

    In this episode you will...

    • Learn about stepping outside the box
    • Discover that being successful is not about following a linear path
    • Find your passion and the things that you really want to do
    • Forget about the pressure from other people
    • Focus on the things that you love to do
    • Hear about the benefit of being in the right community
    • Learn that the online community is powerful, it's one of the most accessible formats for community

    Insights:

"It's been a dream to just be a part of a brand that understands the impact of the community over the last four years. So it's been a journey. It has been a real journey."

"I alluded this process of breaking the rules and stepping outside of the box, but I think the world tries to tell us that our paths must be linear, that we must, you know, go to high school, go to college, get a safe job, climb that corporate ladder. When I really, really kind of in those college years, especially as my business started to grow, realize that I didn't want to climb a corporate ladder so much as I wanted to build my own."

"Even your heroes feel like imposters too, you know, no one feels like they have made it. No one. Nope. Not even her. Like no one has no one ever feels like they have made it. We all think of that one person. She thinks she's made it. She knows every day is just roses and daisies. Yeah. No, it's not. I think, you know, everyone feels like an imposter and you have to tackle that head-on and stop entertaining the lies that you will never measure up."

SDH 406: Managing Your Energy with a 9-5 and Building Your Business on the Side Sep 14, 2020
    Show notes

Hello hello my She Did It Her Way listeners! I hope you’re having an amazing day. I think if 2020 has taught us anything it is that literally ANYTHING is possible and that means you are making your ultimate leap.

If you’ve been listening to the podcast for some time then you know I’m all about building your business and validating it while working full-time. I strongly advise against quitting, and then figuring it out. While it does prove to be successful in some cases, majority of the time it doesn’t always go well. When you go from having 1-2 hours a day to work on your business a few days a week to a new found schedule of having all the time in the world your brain may freak out and wonder, “What do I do with all my time?”

Well today on the podcast I’m going to dive into how to manage your energy (and time) while working a full-time job and building your business on the side. If you can learn these time and energy management principles while working your full-time job then it is going to help set you up for even greater success with managing your calendar when you go full-time.

In today’s podcast episode I’m diving into...

    • How time and energy are different
    • Why energy can be more important than time
    • What is energy fuel?
    • What zaps your energy and how to protect yourself
    • Change your thoughts to change your energy

Time and energy are two very different things.

You can spend an hour doing something you love and feel energized afterwards and you can spend 30 minutes doing something that doesn’t feel expansive and drains your energy. This is why people choose to outsource things in their life and business. For example, if you don’t like to cook you may decide to sign up for a meal delivery service. If you don’t like to clean and cause arguments between you and your spouse...you may opt to invest in a cleaning service. That is what happened between my husband and I. I enjoy organizing not necessarily cleaning and when it started to zap my energy, let alone become a topic that we often go into disagreements about we decided to invest in a cleaning company and split the bill because it was worth it to not expend time and energy on disagreements and my time and energy on actual cleaning. In business it may look like outsourcing podcast production to someone to free up your time and energy. People and friends you hang out with can either give you energy or zap your energy. If you don’t have the energy to do what you want and what needs to get done, then you’re left depleted. It is very important to become aware of what zaps your energy and what gives you energy so you can protect yourself.

Why energy can be more important than time.

If you have the energy but no time, you’ll find the time because you’re inspired to do so. But if you have the time but no energy, you’ll be stuck and sluggish.

    What is energy fuel?

Energy fuel is the type of energy that fuels your actions.

I believe that we have an infinite reservoir of energy and that we have to cultivate it.

Energy fuel is part how we physically feel and part influenced by the thoughts that we think.

Energy can be caused by the thoughts that we think. Energy fuel can be heavy, light, inspiring, excited, determined, resistant.

If you assume something is going to be long, hard and strenuous, that will affect the energy that will fuel you into action (or potentially no action at all).

If you think that starting your email list is going to be overwhelming and complicated, then when it comes time to sit down to start building your email list you will resist it because in your mind you’ve already made it out to be overwhelming. So there for, the energy you’re using as fuel is heavy, resistant and draining.

However though, if you change the way you approach the situation and view starting your email list as something exciting and experimental, you’re going to channel fuel that is more inspiring, more light, vs heavy.

If you find yourself in your full-time job thinking, “Ahhh I have to pump out a month’s worth of Instagram’s post tonight and I’m not sure how I’m going to get it done and I need to get 50 more people in my Facebook group and ahhh….” You can imagine the type of energy fuel that is being used caused by the thoughts you’re thinking and the energy you’re fueling your actions with. It is very rushing and overwhelming.

Versus if you think “Okay, tonight I need to create 12 captions for Instagram and I can’t wait to share my knowledge and test it out! I also want to connect with 50 people who I know I can help and serve,” you’ll feel light and inspired to take action.

You need to find the reason and inspiration to give yourself to either get out of bed in the morning before your full-time job or to be disciplined to put in the hours after work. You need to fuel your actions with energy that is going to inspire you.

    What zaps your energy:

There are many things that can zap your energy. Here is the short list:

    • Your thoughts, specifically ones that don’t serve you, like ones that tell you that question your ability to have anything you want, that make you second guess your worth, ones that cause you to spin out in overwhelm.
    • Thoughts that reinforce the story that you never have enough time.
    • Keeping a mental to-do list.
    • Resisting unwanted emotions and not actually surrendering to feel them
    • Eating processed foods, sugar, alcohol.
    • Negative people
    • Speaking and thinking negatively of others
    • Being angry
    • Content switching (moving in and out of tasks)

Change your thoughts to change your energy:

Next time you’re getting ready to do something and find yourself feeling resistant and heavy, I want you to bring into awareness the thought you are thinking and the energy associated with it.

Example: Let’s say you want to start getting up 90 minutes earlier in the morning to work on your business. You set the alarm for 5AM (instead of 6:30 AM)...I want you to be aware of your thoughts and energy when you set the alarm. Are you dreading getting up in the morning or excited? If dreading, why? If excited, why are you excited? Unpack it right there.

Another example: Let’s say you’ve got 4 pieces of content to create and you’re kind of feeling like you’re pressed for time and thinking, “I have no idea how I’m going to get this all done with work.” You’ve got your full-time job that is quite demanding right now. You want to catch yourself as soon as you can when you start to have a thought that causes you to feel heavy, or in this can possible rushed. And ask yourself how you can change your thoughts. You can shift that thought to, “I’m so excited to create these 4 pieces of content and because I’m so excited to create them it won’t take a ton of time at all.”

I often find that when I’m dreading something, one of the reasons is because I think it is going to take much longer than it actually will.

Imagine you have 100 units of energy everyday and if you can eliminate the things that zap your energy and don’t need to do and change the way you think so that that thoughts you think change, you can tap into infinite energy and as much energy as you want.

This is why it is so important to do work and build a business you love and believe in. One that has a strong why because you will lean on that during your journey as a business owner to cultivate inspiration and energy you need to continue moving forward.

I hope you enjoyed today’s podcast episode and until next time, keep doing it your way!

SDH 405: Grow Your Business to Six Figures While Working Full-time with Kyshira S. Moffett Sep 10, 2020
    Show notes

Today's guest is Kyshira S. Moffett, MBA, she's an award-winning serial entrepreneur, brand strategist, and author who specializes in helping ambitious women entrepreneurs package their expertise, brand their influence, and monetize their online presence.

Kyshira is joining us today to share how she launched The Power Collective, with the mission to accelerate the growth of small and mid-sized woman-owned businesses to create more economic equality within the US. The Power Collective is a management consulting firm with specialties in business development, marketing and branding. Kyshira's entrepreneurial story is really interesting because she started her business unintentionally! She started as just helping out friends with simple tasks like creating resumes, career assistance and helping them with their personal branding. She started charging her services and through the word of mouth about her services she landed with some clients!

    In this episode you will...

    • Discover more about the lead-up phase
    • Learn about charging properly for your services
    • Be ready to focus on revenue and not the noise
    • Hear about what it means to have a 6-figures income
    • Learn about the different ways you can market your services
    • Find out about setting up frameworks for your business

    Insights:

"I feel like one of the biggest mistakes is like trying to jump straight into passive income. It's really hard to have a passive income if you don't have an active income. "

"Most people don't spend enough time betting and adjusting their frameworks in the beginning through one on one work to even get to the place of actually packaging it up. So like my first recommendation is one, create the framework to vet the framework, get some consistent results, get some consistent case studies and reviews. And number three, you need to build a brand around the framework. So what that means is one get your intellectual property game up, get your trademarks, okay, that's important."

"You're gonna have moments where you're being emotional, but recognizing that, hey, I'm being emotional. I'm freaking out right now this is but this is not the time for me to make a decision, right? I am not gonna be a risky decision about my business and just know that it never really goes away."

SDH 404: How to Land Podcast Interviews (and Grow Your Business) Sep 07, 2020
    Show notes

    In today’s episode, I’m going to share…

    1. The benefits of being a guest on podcast shows
    2. How to Go about Landing More Podcast Interviews
    3. How to Be a Standout Guest

First, let’s talk about some of the benefits of being a guest on other podcasts:

    1. Exposure - It is an opportunity for you to get in front of someone else’s audience to deliver value and for them to get to know you.
    2. Influence/Authority - The more you become known for a certain topic, the more you become viewed as an “expert” or the “go-to” person which allows people to begin the journey of know, like, and trust factor.
    3. Leadgen - When you are a guest on a show it allows you to invite those listeners to engage with you that may ultimately become a customer.

How to Land more Podcast Interviews:

If you want to land more podcast interviews or start going on shows, I want to share a couple of things I’ve found helpful from my experience of being a guest and a host…

    1. Make sure that the show aligns with the value you can offer. You want to be strategic and intentional with your efforts as much as the host wants to make sure he/she is bringing on the right guests for their audience. You want to do your research and make sure that the podcast shows you want to go on, you’ll be able to provide value to the listeners.

    2. Create a list of 10-20 shows that you feel align with what you have to offer/teach and the listeners:

    • Start with iTunes and search based on the category to make your list. Typically newer podcasts are looking for guests where more established podcasts may have a strong process and a pipeline of guests already lined up. These may be harder to get on and you want to make the most of your time.

    3. Look for a submission process on their site.

    • I always recommend starting out looking for a submission form to submit information to be a guest before emailing the host outright.

    4. Pitch

    • Template but tailored. To save time and energy you want to gather your thoughts ahead of time about the benefit of having you as a guest on the show. Have your bio, possibly a one-pager ready to go.

The final thing I’ll say about landing more guest interviews is that a lot of it can come down to building relationships with people. For example, if I had an amazing interview with a guest on She Did It Her Way, I may ask that guest if she recommends anyone else to be a guest.

How to Be a Standout Guest and prepare:

    • Potentially ask questions ahead of time to best understand how you can provide value for their specific audience
    • Know your call-to-action. Where are you inviting the listeners to take the next step?
    • Share the interview on social and email.

Until next time, keep doing it your way.

SDH 402: 6 Steps to Create More Space and Achieve Your Goals Aug 31, 2020
    Show notes

Part of it might be that we’re setting the wrong goal and so maybe we’re not entirely motivated by it. Part of it might be we need to practice the skill of following through and part of it might be how our environment is set up which is what I’m going to dive into today.

In this episode, I want to share with you 6 things you can do right now that will drastically change your ability to achieve your goals.

When I started implementing these 6 things, achieving my goals became easy, became a habit and became the norm. There was zero question about whether or not I was going to achieve the goals I set for myself because I knew that I had set myself up for success.

    1. Limit your input - Part of what distracts us is the amount of input we’re taking in.

    2. Create constraints - Once you’ve identified what you want to limit, next is to create the constraints that help you limit that input. It is time to put the blinders on. Here are a few things you can do right now to put your blinkers on:

Set up “Do Not Disturb” time constraints on your phone.

    3. Practice saying “No” more often - Part of putting limitations on ourselves and what we allow in will require us to practice saying “No” more often.

    4. Declutter your physical space - When you have more stuff in your space, it is hard to keep it organized and create a place for everything that you have.

Here are a few tips to get started on decluttering your space:

    5. Declutter your digital space

    6. Track how you currently spend your time. This is huge. Most of us don’t know where the days go….sooo if you don’t know where they go, that means it is time to track them.
