    Selfie

Let’s talk self-care and mental health. Kristen Howerton, writer and psychotherapist, is joined by her longtime pal Matthias Roberts, psychotherapist, side-eye aficionado, and dog dad, as they tackle the tricky and often elusive aspects of caring for ourselves. Their weekly conversations explore questions like: Can self-care be for everyone? How do I get enough sleep? What aspects of my personality make self-care tricky? And what’s in this face mask? From the silly to the serious, Kristen and Matthias are taking a vulnerable and often humorous look at body, mind and spirit . . . all while looking at the distractions and defenses that keep us from caring for ourselves like we should. Like that 6pm deadline butting up against 6:30pm soccer practice.

The Selfie holiday gift guide | Selfie Podcast Episode 12 Dec 11, 2017
    Show notes

In our last episode of Selfie, Sarah and I shared a ton of unique gift ideas for the women, men and kids in your life. Here are some of our favorites: For Women: If you love the smell of walking into an Anthropologie, you need Capri Blue candles. It smells like a tropical vacation. Kristen is partial to the mercury glass collection because of the glow the glass gives off. She’s also a fan of Jonathan Adler’s red currant candle. Wanna gift a cookbook? We recommend How To Cook Anything by Mark Bittman and the True Foods cookbook. Can a vacuum really change your life? And make your kids more willing to clean? Kristen contends that the Dyson cordless vacuum can. Sarah uses this Vitruvi Essential Oil Diffuser which, in addition to making her home smell amazing, looks like a modern vase. Sarah is obsessed with the MUN essentials skincare set, a luxury splurge for a woman you like a lot. (Use the code WHOORL for 15% off your purchase!) Reusable shopping bags are always a useful gift and Baggu’s are adorable and in a variety of fun modern prints and colors. We’ve long loved 31 Bits jewelry but their new home collection is TO DIE FOR and all purchases benefit women in Uganda and Bali.

    Show notes

What can you learn about your internal motivations and drives from the Enneagram? We’re kicking off a series on this fascinating personality theory. In this introductory episode we will explain what it is, and then talk through each type with writer and enneagram enthusiast Leigh Kramer. We’re also joined by Christopher Heuertz, author of The Sacred Enneagram, who shares some of the history of the enneagram, it’s spiritual origins and modern psychological iterations, and how our childhood fears and wounds shape our personality. It’s a fascinating episode that we hope will inspire you to join us on this journey of exploration. To take the test to find out your own type, you can visit this site for a quick, free test, or buy the $12 Riso-Hudson Enneagram Type Indicator test at the Enneagram Institute for a more thorough assessment and explanation of your secondary types. (We recommend springing for the paid test.) Is the internet making us dumber? More dumb? How can detachment help us avoid self-hate? And can watching TV be a form of self-care? In this episode, we chat about our collective addiction to scrolling the internet, and the negative effects of screentime (and how to get control.) We also chat with Cheri Huber, author of There Is Nothing Wrong with You: Going Beyond Self-Hate and founder of the Zen Monastery Peace Center , about the process of letting go of our negative personal narratives. Have it auto-email to a friend for some real-talk accountability. * The moment app can tell you how many times you’ve checked your phone in a day. * In addition to being a must-have internet filter to keep kids off inappropriate sites, the Circle by Disney device can give you a daily overview of how you are spending your time online. * Wanna take the challenge to get your phone out of your room? As it turns out, there are alarm clocks! And sound machines! * The book Facehooked: How Facebook Affects Our Emotions, Relationships, and Lives is a fascinating look at our collective facebook addiction. We’re talking pubic hair: to remove or not to remove? And also: the art of detachment | Selfie Podcast Episode 6 Oct 31, 2017
    Show notes

This is my favorite episode of Selfie so far because 1) our conversation about pubic hair was so cringey and hilarious that my cheeks hurt from laughing, and 2) our conversation about detachment with Bj Hickman was full of life-giving lightbulb moments about relationships and detaching from people pleasing. In this episode we take a deep dive (ooph) into pubic hair and some of the challenges of hair removal in this delicate area, sharing our own experiences with lasers, waxing, shaving, trimming, and even Nair. We also chat with therapist B.J. Hickman about the psychological concept of detachment, and how we can care for others without losing ourselves. In this episode, we talked about: * Kristen swears by this bikini trimmer gadget for bikini hair removal without the unsightly bumps of shaving. * Brave enough to try waxing at home? This kit from Amazon has good reviews. * Are you a good candidate for laser hair removal? * Melody Beattie wrote the quintessential book on detachment called The Language of Letting Go. * Brene Brown’s book I Thought It Was Just Me is also an excellent guide to self-acceptance. * Take a look at the history of hair removal.
