    S1 EP68 BC:03 | Book Club | The Alchemist Mar 20, 2019
    Show notes

Hey yogis! By now, we've finished reading book #3 of the Yogi Misfit Book Club, The Alchemist. If you haven't yet finished it--no worries! Keep on keepin' on but there are spoilers ahead!

This session, I talk about the story of the Alchemist. If metaphorical stories or self-help books are not your jam, this book will not be for you. The Alchemist is a novel by Brazilian author Paulo Coelho. Originally written in Portuguese, has become an international bestseller and has been translated into over 65 languages. As an allegorical story, The Alchemist follows a young Andalusian shepherd named Santiago in his journey to the pyramids of Egypt, after having a recurring dream of finding a treasure there.

Some things that stood out to me were following your dreams with a sense of responsibility and how love should always be supportive. The biggest thing that really struck me was also about being in the present and in the moment, going through the process that will get you towards your end goal.

What were some things that stood out to you? Let me know in the Yogi Misfits Facebook group!

Stay tuned for the next book, The Life Changing Magic of Tidying Up by Marie Kondo.

    Buy it here.

Keep up with all book club-related things here. See the group for details on the live discussion of The Alchemist. You'll be joining the rad kula (community) that is the Yogi Misfits.

YMS x Fierce Calm: S2 Kris Pace Mar 06, 2019
    Show notes

Tribe, I'm honored to present to you the collaboration between the Yogi Misfit Sessions and Fierce Calm.

Each month, we'll bring you a compelling story about how yoga has saved a life, with bonus mini stories on yoga's ability to heal and transform. Fierce Calm is a growing collective of yoga practitioners from all backgrounds and abilities who have each identified with the words 'Yoga Saved My Life' and come together as a movement to inspire & empower each other without judgment and with compassion. This is something that I think we can all stand behind.

Veteran Kris Pace suffered a traumatic brain injury during his service leaving him with chronic pain and PTSD. Yoga gave its support to Kris after experiencing frustration with the Veteran Affairs health care system. Manifesting as a physical practice initially, yoga showed its spiritual side that encouraged him to become a teacher when he didn't want to be. Being vulnerable during class cracked something open within that altered Kris' life as he knew it.

Stay tuned at the end for two mini stories from Shannon and Tatiana, too!

    S1 EP66 | Yogi Misfit Sessions: Marshawn Feltus Feb 27, 2019
    Show notes

This session is a powerful one and I'm extremely honored to have Marshawn Feltus as my guest this week. Just before his 18th birthday, an altercation he recalls as “senseless street violence” escalated into a fatal shooting and landed him a 38-year prison sentence. During his incarceration, he took his first yoga class that forever altered his life then took the seat of the teacher to lead over 800 men in Ashtanga.

After serving almost 19 years, Marshawn opened up ACT Yoga, the first studio in the underserved Chicago-Austin area. ACT stands for "Awareness, Change, and Triumph."

We sit down and talk about the mental benefits of yoga, and why he finds this practice to be so valuable. Being in an underserved community, he shares his challenges with de-mystifying yoga ("I thought yoga was for skinny white women, like I thought basketball and football were for the brothers."), and how he tries to make this practice sustainable and attainable more than a one-time experience on the mat.

Tribe, I'm excited and honored to present to you the inaugural session that is a collaboration between the Yogi Misfit Sessions and Fierce Calm.

Each month, we'll bring you a compelling story about how yoga has saved a life, with bonus mini stories on yoga's ability to heal and transform. Fierce Calm is an growing collective of yoga practitioners from all backgrounds and abilities who have each identified with the words 'Yoga Saved My Life' and come together as a movement to inspire & empower each other without judgment and with compassion. I've got Joseph Armstrong on this show, and he shares his story about how yoga profoundly affected him. Having a history of drug usage, he hit a wall with IV meth usage, bringing him to an impasse. With the help of the 12 Step program and ashtanga yoga, he shares his journey of transformation towards a new life.

    S1 EP55 | Yogi Misfit Sessions | Feat. Dr Lee Watson & Koreen Strauss Nov 14, 2018
    Show notes

For this week's session, I'm so happy to be sharing with you guys the amazing Dr. Lee Watson and Koreen Strauss - the awesome individuals behind Fierce Calm.

Fierce Calm is a platform that allows people who identify with the words "yoga saved my life" to share their stories.

Their community offers a safe place for people to come forward and share their experiences. Being able to share how we feel and what's happened to us is so important in helping us heal and grow. We shouldn't have to hide our pain and feel like we're alone in this world. Because we're not.

For those of you who know me, yoga was the only thing that really saved me when I felt lost to the world and like I had nothing. I can't champion this initiative enough. I believe in with all my heart. I'm truly humbled to be the Global Ambassador for Fierce Calm, and I hope to bring awareness as to how yoga can change people's lives for the better, just as it changed mine.

As always, shout out to our friends at SF Yoga Magazine for their continued support.
