    Secrets for an Awesome Life

Have you ever seen someone completely enjoying life? Living to their fullest, not brought down by anyone or anything, totally having their stuff together? It’s almost like they know secrets you don’t.

This show is about those secrets.

Don’t worry. Not very many people know these secrets. Or if they do, they don’t apply them. These secrets are skills and mindsets not taught in any college or high school course. We may have heard of them, but no one taught us how to actually apply them to our lives. Which is a shame, because when you apply them, your life becomes more awesome.

That’s why I created this podcast, for teens who are looking to up the awesome level in their lives.

I am Joey Mascio and I’m a Teen & Young Adult Life Coach. I was certified at the Life Coach School where I was trained by Master Life Coach Brooke Castillo. I’ve also gone through Jody Moore’s Advanced Certification. I take the strategies and tools I’ve learned from these two powerful women, and lots of my own, and adapt them for teenagers and young adults. I am also a middle school teacher and counselor, a proud father of three, and a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

Ending the School Year Strong May 16, 2024
    Show notes

The end of the school year is tough for teens. Making up missing assignments, taking finals, and all the emotions that come from closing a chapter of your life. It can be brutal! But, if teens can balance pushing themselves a little more with acceptance of what is, then they'll be able to finish the school year strong.

Soaking Up Other People's Emotions with Marv Curtis May 09, 2024
    Show notes

Highly sensitive teens soak up other people's emotions, sometimes without meaning to. But what do you do with those "borrowed" feelings? I talk with Marv Curtis, a trauma coach, about what tweens and teens can do when their empathy for others are weighing them down and how to turn this perceived weakness into a strength.

    A Smartphone Driver's License?? May 02, 2024
    Show notes

The data is coming in and smartphones are arguably just as dangerous as driving a car, though the dangers may be different. So, why aren't there more underaged regulations when it comes it comes to teens and smartphones? Probably because teens everywhere would revolt (and some adults, too). Today I consider the idea that we really are in the early stages of a new technology, and just like when automobiles started rolling off the line, more regulations and laws may actually be a good thing.

See the Harvard page that I read from in the episode here: https://digitalthriving.gse.harvard.edu/digital-thriving/like-driving/

Confident Body Language Apr 18, 2024
    Show notes

A teen's body language communicates SO MUCH. There are ways teens can stand, sit, and walk that will not only create confidence within yourself, but also signal to other people that you ARE confident. I interview special guest Derik Clark, a 22-year US Army veteran officer who specialized in counterintelligence (anti spy) investigations and intelligence source operations (similar to police informant stuff). Through these responsibilities he became a subject matter expert in body language assessments, high stakes interviewing in threatening environments, and building relationships of trust with intelligence agencies in domestic and international environments. He shares tips with teens on how to have confident body language. Plus, as a tip at the end, he tells teens how to recognize if someone likes you!

"People Will Think I'm Weird!" Apr 11, 2024
    Show notes

The biggest fear of any tween or teen is people thinking they are weird. They'd almost rather die. "Weird" people don't make friends, right? But people thinking they are weird isn't as bad as their brain makes it out to be. In fact, if people think you're weird when you are just being yourself, you are MORE likely to find your friends, NOT less likely.

Emotion Monsters (Encore) Apr 04, 2024
    Show notes

Emotions can seem scary, especially for teens. Most of us treat our emotions like a monster from a horror movie. We are afraid of them because we don't know what they look like, where they came from, or what to do with them. And we certainly don't want to face them. Today's secret for an awesome life is: Don't run from or fight unpleasant emotions. Choose to allow them to be with you. In this episode, I teach teens how to process unpleasant emotions so they can keep moving toward their life's goals.

What effect is the digital age having on teen friendships? Most teens are used to communicating via emojis and shorthand text language! Sure, it's a lot easier than talking in person, but not the most effective way to communicate. Today I talk with teens about how this increase in online communication may be affecting their real life relationships and how to stop it.
