    Beau Baker: Vanity—Perfectionism, Ego & Pride Nov 02, 2020
    Show notes

Society conditions us to strive to be perfect — be thin, toned, ripped, trimmed, waxed, peeled, tan, liked, followed, friended, and then... we will be loved. There's a misconception that only women put themselves under a microscope when it comes to their bodies and their looks, but men do too.

A new study points to a surprising connection between rising perfectionism in our culture and rising mental health issues, including depression and anxiety. The study, published in the American Psychological Association's Psychological Bulletin, suggests that young people are more obsessed with perfection than previous generations.

Between 1989 and 2016, perfectionism has continued to rapidly increase in the US, with rates that parallel increased cases of depression and anxiety.

Perfectionism is a combination of excessively high personal standards and overly critical self-evaluations.

How About We 'Cancel' Rape? Oct 26, 2020
    Show notes

**Trigger warning. This episode is about sexual assault and rape.** At 15, Emily was raped by the Homecoming King and at 16, sexually assaulted by a police officer. She swore she wouldn't tell anyone. 1 in 3 women has been sexually assaulted by the time they are 18, yet the majority go unreported. The rape culture that continues to exist needs to change. As a society, why aren't we teaching our impressionable young men about sex, respect, and boundaries? How can we educate our hormone-raging teenage boys to respect women and spark change?

“It is easier to build strong children than to repair broken men.

Jay Parker: Remedy For Addiction: Service Oct 19, 2020
    Show notes

His sex and love addiction became front-page news, "Talent Scout Arrested on Immoral Charges." His addiction robbed him of a successful career, marriage, and his dignity. 30 years later, Jay has helped hundreds of people recover from the deadly disease of sex and love addiction.

    ______

Jay Parker, consultant and recovery coach, guides those who struggle with addiction on their journey from shame to grace.

To find out more about Jay: https://jayparker.org

Jay Parker is a native of New York City who ran a successful basketball talent scouting service in Texas until his own struggles with addiction took his life in another direction. He lost his business and career. Through his professional association with the former pro basketball all-star, Parker entered the John Lucas Treatment and Recovery Center in Houston and dealt with his addiction, turning his experience into his expertise.

Parker completed counseling course work and became a Licensed Chemical Dependency Counselor (LCDC) in Texas in 1994. He began a new career in mental health as the director of education at West Oaks Hospital in Houston before moving to the private alcohol and drug treatment center, The Right Step.

He moved to the Pacific Northwest to take an administrative position with Lakeside-Milam Recovery Centers in Kirkland, Wash. He met Dr. Hilarie Cash, who was at work developing observations about computer and Internet addiction. In 1999, they co-founded Internet/Computer Addiction Services in Redmond and developed the No More Secrets program for sex and love addicts.

He also has appeared on ABC News, CNN, the BBC, and PBS, and been interviewed by publications including The Wall Street Journal, USA Today and U.S. News and World Report. He speaks at treatment centers and has addressed conferences of The Northwest Institute of Addiction Studies, the Texas Association of Addiction Professionals, and the National Council on Sexual Addiction and Compulsivity. He is an NCAA-approved speaker who addresses university and college student-athletes on the perils of alcohol and substance abuse as well as other topical mental health issues. Jay Parker has more than 29 years of personal sobriety. His commitment to his own recovery is unwavering. He is happily married with two adult children. Parker takes particular delight in dancing at the weddings of his clients who, like him, have turned around their lives.

Gabrielle Stone: Eat, Pray, #FML Sep 28, 2020
    Show notes

A year and a half into her marriage, Gabrielle Stone finds out her husband has been having an affair. Then she meets a man, and he asks her to marry him. Forty-eight hours before a trip to Italy, he breaks up with her. Her first thought... FML!

    _______

Gabrielle Stone is no stranger to the world of entertainment. Growing up on set with her legendary scream queen mother Dee Wallace (Cujo, E.T.), she had days of licking off mommy’s fake blood and getting the travel bug at an early age. Gabrielle experienced one of the world’s real-life horrors when she lost her father suddenly at age seven.

After many years in the industry herself, Stone transitioned from meaty acting roles to writing and directing. Her award-winning films It Happened Again Last Night and After Emma gained her awards for writing, directing, and acting—but she had a bigger role in life that would soon present itself: freaking badass.

After the rug was vigorously pulled out from under her when her husband’s affair came to light, she found herself falling into the arms of another man. After a second failed attempt at love, a massive heartbreak, and yet another rug being yanked from her feet, she decided instead of landing flat on her ass—she’d make a career out of it.

And so came the birth of the novel Eat, Pray, #FML, where she shared all the mistakes, all the lessons, and most importantly, how she became a badass from it all.

Plastic Crack - Toy Collecting Addiction Sep 21, 2020
    Show notes

The impulsive, addictive dark side of toy collecting and the need for people to have "an object of desire." OCD is about control. But what is a 5-year-old trying to control? Alex unpacks a secret he kept from his wife for years, the shame he carried, and his recent OCD diagnosis. Getting to the bottom of the psychology of collecting and why he devoted significant amounts of time, money, and energy making and maintaining his collection. An activity he shared with his now-estranged brother only fed the addiction more.

Psychologists have often taken a Freudian perspective when describing why people collect. They highlight the controlling and impulsive dark side to collecting, the need for people to have "an object of desire." - Rykwert, J. (2001). WHY COLLECT?. History Today
