On the quest to scale autonomy, partnerships are essential. A perfect example is the recent collaboration between MOIA and Apex.AI for the market-ready development of a passenger management system for autonomous mobility services.

    .

As a subsidiary of the Volkswagen Group, MOIA develops mobility services at its Berlin and Hamburg locations in partnership with cities and local public transport operators. Apex.AI is a global company that develops scalable software for vehicles and mobility systems. Together, the two companies are utilizing the software development kit from Apex.AI to further MOIA’s goal of developing Europe's first type-certified AD-MaaS system and launching an integrated autonomous, scalable ridepooling system in Hamburg.

    .

To learn more about this successful partnership, we sat down with Jan Becker, Co-founder and CEO, Apex.AI, and Sascha Meyer, CEO, MOIA, to discuss how their collaboration strengthens agile software development at both companies and the importance of building autonomous mobility systems for the common good.

    177. Unlocking Silicon's Full Potential to Further EV Adoption Aug 10, 2023
    Show notes

Increasing EV battery performance while lowering cost? That’s the goal of OneD Battery Sciences. With a breakthrough technology known as SINANODE, the company is successfully adding more energy-dense silicon into the anodes of lithium-ion EV batteries to increase efficiency and affordability.

    .

Why silicon? Because it can store ten times the energy of graphite alone—yet previous attempts to include more in the anode have failed due to expansion and breakage. By eliminating these issues, SINANODE unlocks silicon’s full potential to advance the production of competitive EVs that meet market demand. The company has even partnered with GM for joint R&D of silicon anode technology for more efficient EV batteries.

    .

To learn more about this ground-breaking technology, we sat down with Vincent Pluvinage, PhD, CEO and Co-founder, OneD Battery Sciences, to discuss the current state of EV battery production and how SINANODE can further EV adoption.

    176. UNPLUGGED: The AV Industry Has a Messaging Problem Aug 03, 2023
    Show notes

Autonomous vehicles are economic engines that will increase safety, create jobs, and boost consumer spending. The problem is many people don’t think about them that way.

    .

Despite the negative backlash on automation and autonomy, 75% of the global public trusts the technology sector, a 1-point increase year-over-year, according to the 2023 Edelman Trust Barometer. The trust is there, but the AV industry needs to work on the messaging to help consumers realize that autonomy can improve their lives and create jobs.

    .

Join Grayson Brulte, Host of SAE Tomorrow Today, as he discusses the current sentiment around AVs and how we can change the public’s mindset by highlighting the positive benefits this technology will bring to us all.

    173. BRIEFS: Supporting a Circular Economy for EV Batteries Jul 18, 2023
    Show notes

When it comes to sustainability, the term “circular economy” refers to a process in which products are used again and again, thus reducing finite raw material consumption and curbing CO2 emissions. In transportation, the need to achieve circularity for EV batteries is particularly acute.

    .

According to recent studies, the projected demand for lithium will increase sixfold by 2030. This surge requires new engineering practices that reuse and recycle EV battery materials all the way upstream—and that’s where SAE comes in.

    .

In the latest episode of Sustainable Mobility Briefs, Frank Menchaca, President, Sustainable Mobility Solutions at SAE International, discusses the importance of a circular economy for EV batteries and how SAE is designing engineering practices that will support the transition from gasoline power to electricity.
