'PINK FLOYD: LIVE AT POMPEII' w/ Larry Crane Sep 04, 2025
    Show notes

This week, I am joined by LARRY CRANE (producer, engineer, owner of Jackpot! Recording Studio & founder/editor of Tape Op Magazine & Pink Floyd superfan), who chose the classic music film PINK FLOYD: LIVE AT POMPEII to discuss!!!

We discuss the genesis of the film and all the different versions of this film (including the super frustrating screensaver version of Live At Pompeii), Chris's recent accidental hallucinatory viewing of the film and its many jump scares, Larry building Jackpot! Recording Studios & his early studio Laundry Rules, why artists often can't stop reworking their older bodies of work, Larry's gateway into Pink Floyd, The Benson Echorec piece of equipment used throughout this performance, Joe Boyd and the UFO Club, Larry building fuzz boxes without a switch on it, why the film is both wonderful and frustrating for Larry, the secret weapon of band member Richard Wright in this film, bands that spend over a year making an album, the accidental two-bass recording of 'One Of These Days', Syd Barrett's body of work, democracies within rock bands, monster drummer Nick Mason, is the film made for future scholars of the band or stoners, artists who don't suffer foolish questions, rock bands with zero body fat, Jonathan Richman doing an opening set before movies, and Larry getting an email for our episode from Alan Parson (the engineer of Dark Side Of The Moon) that solves a lingering question we've always had about the film!

Overhead the albatross, hangs motionless upon the air (right?!?) on this week's episode of Revolutions Per Movie!

AND OF COURSE THEY RELEASED YET ANOTHER VERSION OF PINK FLOYD LIVE AT POMPEII AFTER WE RECORDED THIS...HA! GET IT HERE:

'SPICE WORLD' w/ Mary Houlihan Aug 28, 2025
    Show notes

This week, my guest is Mary Houlihan (comedian & artist: Mary Houlihan's Painting Party, Joe Pera Talks With You, Difficult People), who brings us a film she has seen hundreds of times: SPICE WORLD!

We also discuss her Edinburgh Fringe Festival show 'Me And Jack’, featuring the disembodied head of Jack Nicholson, how Mary sees colors, how Mary first saw this film as a kid and what the Spice Girls mean to her still, how they got their nicknames, the amazing supporting cast including Alan Cumming, Mark McKinney & Richard E. Grant, the 13-second cameo by Elton John, which part of the Spice Girls double decker bus is the coolest, how party scenes tend to be depicted in movies, the upsetting alien sequence in the film, learning about snogging, the proposed Spice World sequel, the awkwardness of being the friend of a more famous friend, what the hell happened to their friend Brian in the film, how the film was written by the team behind Faulty Towers & Red Dwarf, how the Spice Girls were self-managed and wrote most of their songs and more!

So let's tell Meatloaf (yes, that Meatloaf!) to step on it and get us to this week's episode of Revolutions Per Movie.

ENCORE PRESENTATION: 'SISTERS WITH TRANSISTORS' w/ Camilla Aisa Aug 26, 2025
    Show notes

Hey everyone...welcome to our bi-monthly ENCORE PRESENTATION of classic REVOLUTIONS PER MOVIE episodes from the vault! On this episode, I was joined by CAMILLA AISA (writer, UK's Shindig, Rock Collector), who brought the incredible documentary Sisters With Transistors about the incredible female synthesizer pioneers who laid the groundwork for everything that we have today. It's an all-timer (and early) episode (Episode 17 originally aired on Jan. 4th, 2024).

    The original podcast show notes:

This week we talked to UK music scribe Camilla Aisa (Shindig, Rock Collector) about the 2020 music documentary ‘Sisters With Transitors.’ We discuss how 2 seconds of a Suzanne Ciani composition might be one of the most perfect pieces of music of all time, pop thievery vs. true innovators, music that can transform your life, and Camilla’s dissertation on the garage/psych music scenes of the Pacific NW.

So, let’s pull some wires and turn the dial as we discuss one of the greatest music documentaries of all time.

'ANY OTHER WAY: THE JACKIE SHANE STORY' w/ Michael Mabbott Aug 21, 2025
    Show notes

This week, we are joined by filmmaker Michael Mabbott, the co-director of the Peabody award-winning documentary ANY OTHER WAY: THE JACKIE SHANE STORY, about the pioneering black trans soul singer. We discuss how Jackie had disappeared for 40 years and the surprise of finding out she was still alive, how Michael gained the trust of Jackie and her family to make the documentary, how he incorporated rotoscoped lip-syncs into the film using two trans legends (Makayla Couture from RuPaul's Drag Race and actress Sandra Caldwell), Jackie’s childhood and early years performing in Memphis, literally running away to join the circus & her time performing with Jimi Hendrix, how hard it was to whittle down her incredible life into a feature length documentary and what didn't make it into the film, the Memphis TV show Night Train and its legacy, why Jackie said no to performing for Dick Clark & Ed Sullivan, why she chose to leave the spotlight & what dragged her back in, and why Jackie's story is so important to tell now with the current state of our world.

So as Jackie says, "live your life because ain't nobody sanctified and holy" on this week's Revolutions Per Movie.

'DIE KREUZEN LIVE ON CABLE ACCESS: 1983 & 1991' w/ Sahan Jayasuriya Aug 14, 2025
    Show notes

This week, my guest is Sahan Jayasuriya, musician & author of Don't Say Please: The Oral History of Die Kreuzen, who discusses the influential but polarizing band, DIE KREUZEN, as we look at the two legendary cable access performances that bookended the band's career in 1983 & 1991.

We discuss how Die Kreuzen is beloved by musicians such as Neko Case, Thurston Moore & Ian MacKaye; why fans often don't want their favorite band to ever change musically and how Die Kreuzen struggled with that, the band's origin story and what led to their first EP Cows And Beer, their devastating first s/t LP and how some listeners were not ready for the follow-up October File, Maximum Rocknroll, how Die Kreuzen were a chemistry band not unlike R.E.M. or Cheap Trick, how a single photo of Keith from the band moved Chris to start dressing and performing like him, the 1983 Milwaukee cable access show: Who Am I: The Punk Rock Attitude & the roundtable discussion in it plus the band's blistering 17 minutes set, how the sound of pain resonated from the band sonically on all their records, Corey Rusk and Touch & Go Records, working with Butch Vig, the artwork of Richard Kohl, Chris witnessing a punk audience turn on the band at their live show, fog machines, Pink Flag, the band working with Steve Albini, why they disbanded shortly after their 1991 cable access performance, and the great story of Lou Barlow freaking out backstage because "Die Kreuzen are right behind that door!"

Whether you know Die Kreuzen or not, this is a fantastic story about whether or not audiences are willing to go where a band wants to go. All this and more on this week's episode of Revolutions Per Movie.

We discuss JC's first live concert: T REX, honoring your past by playing classic songs that people still want to hear, JC meeting Graham Parker in a bar and making 4-track recordings in their bedroom together, hanging out at The Roxy and London’s incredible small punk scene at the time, singer/hustler Nicky Tesco and his amazing stage presence, recording in Eddy Grant’s recording studio and being produced by Steve Lillywhite, punk bands being on major labels, playing LA, SF and NY for the first time, how confusing their MTV hit “Working Girl” was compared to their URGH performance, the Copeland brothers’ fingerprints being all over URGH, Jerry Dammers, why they chose "Offshore Banking Business" for the film instead of other punkier singles, Dr. Feelgood, how they played their URGH concert with Pere Ubu & Magazine, working with Larry Wallis of Pink Fairies, how JC feels that URGH is an essential film culturally, how their single "The Sound Of The Suburbs" sold over 250,000 copies and why they never made any money off it.

So get ready for yet another jaw-dropping URGH interview available only on A VERY OPINIONATED LOOK AT URGH! A MUSIC WAR! Pt. 2 with JC Carroll is up next!

    'STARSTRUCK' w/ Alonso Duralde Jul 31, 2025
    Show notes

This week, I’m joined by critic, author, and podcaster Alonso Duralde, who chose to discuss the 1982 Australian New Wave music film Starstruck. We also talk about Alonso’s incredible new book Hollywood Pride: A Celebration of LGBTQ+ Representation and Perseverance in Film, working in video stores, 80s mind-bending musicals like The Apple and Can't Stop The Music, how filmmaker Gillian Armstrong’s second film was nowhere near the vibe of her first (My Brilliant Career), the underground rabid fanbase for the film, the music in the film being written and performed by members of Split Enz and The Swingers, which bands were originally going to be involved in the film, what we hung on our teenage walls, bad 80s haircut experiences, how to sneak into a club, the confusing family dynamics in the film, the incredible Busby Berkeley tribute in the swimming pool sequence, where we imagine the characters in this film ended up, what stopped rock musicals being made for a spell and so much more.

So let's all jump on top of the bar in unison, kick the drinks off, and magically know all the dance moves already on this week's Revolutions Per Movie!

ENCORE PRESENTATION: 'THE FILM AND VIDEO WORK OF THE RESIDENTS' w/ Homer Flynn (representing The Residents) Jul 29, 2025
    Show notes

Hey everyone...welcome to our bi-monthly ENCORE PRESENTATION of classic REVOLUTIONS PER MOVIE episodes from the vault! On this episode, I was joined by Homer Flynn, representing The Residents and all things Ralph Records, to talk about their incredible body of work, and my gawd, they performed part of their epic, Eskimo, live recently...incredible!This was my chance to ask about so many things that wouldn't be typically discussed regarding The Residents. I was extremely proud when, at the end of the interview, Homer thanked me for not asking about the eyeballs. Why would I?!!??!? (Episode 45 originally aired on June 18th, 2024).

    The original show notes:

This week, we talked to Homer Flynn of The Cryptic Corporation, who represents the mysterious, unknown collective, THE RESIDENTS, and discussed their legacy in film and video. Topics included the band’s Theory Of Obscurity, which Resident is the easiest to negotiate with, how the band couldn’t even give their initial records away and the moment that changed, creating the Ralph Records logo, what the Residents think of A.I., how they created their album artwork and music videos, collaborating with Night Flight, being The Residents during the pandemic, why The the collective gravitated to and stayed in S.F., working with John Sanborn & Graeme Whifler, The Residents’ filmmaking heroes, making music videos in an era where there was no place to show them, how the Cryptic Corp deals with the band’s larger than life concepts, the folly of trying to accomplish everything in one’s lifetime, the story behind their Ugly Grey Theater not being allowed to exist, their early 70s feature length epic Vileness Fats and how it lead to the false start film Double Trouble which then led to their first feature length film 50 years later, Triple Trouble, and their discussion on their next large scale projects including a one song concert in Geneva and Paris.

So come all you sinister exaggerators and let’s talk the visuals of The Residents.
