ENCORE PRESENTATION (GERALD V. CASLE of DEVO on The Films & Videos of DEVO) Jun 10, 2025
    Show notes

Hey everyone...in honor of our upcoming 100th episode (!!!), I'll be re-releasing a few of my favorite past conversations on Tuesdays.

This one was a lifelong dream for me: getting to talk to DEVO's Gerald V. Casale about their body of work--a band whose musical and visual identity showed teenage me that it was o.k. to be different, weird, and skeptical. Jerry does not suffer fools gladly, so I was quite nervous going into the interview, but once he realized I wasn't going ask about the flower pot hats, we both relaxed and took a serious deep dive into how he and DEVO altered the world forever, as well as how lonely that could be for them. Episode 35 originally aired on May 9th, 2024.

    The original podcast show notes:

This week, the one that started it all for me, Devo’s Jerry Casale, joins me on the podcast to talk about Devo’s film and video legacy. We discuss the origin story of their first short film, the films that influenced Casale and Devo’s aesthetic, their early jobs and the pressures of Ohio, how ‘Bonnie & Clyde’ influenced the 'Beautiful World’ video, meeting collaborator Chuck Statler, where Rod Rooter’s dialogue came from, Club Devo and the difficulties making their merchandise, Jerry tells the plot of the Devo feature-length film script that never got made (including one that was going into production with Francis Ford Coppola & one with William Friedkin), how they directed their conservative looking extras and General Boy, meeting their idols, how they constructed their live shows, phone calls from the video Commissioner of MTV, censorship, working with Soundgarden, Bruce Connor’s ‘Mongoloid’ short film, transgressive art, people being scared of Devo, Kent State & the Vietnam War as the antecedents of Devolution, crawling out of the basement, the communal mindset of the members of Devo, the antagonistic nature against Devo from interviewers, having fun with the audience while rubbing their nose in it, the groundbreaking & primitive ‘Oh No It’s Devo’ tour, making ‘The Men Who Make The Music’ and having your own action figure made of you.

So...peek-a-boo...let's all get devolved together on this week's Revolutions Per Movie!

'SGT. PEPPER'S LONELY HEARTS CLUB BAND' w/ Jake Fogelnest Jun 05, 2025
    Show notes

This week, I am joined by Jake Fogelnest, who at the age of 14 hosted MTV's Squirt TV, and later collaborated with Will Ferrell, Sarah Silverman & Billy Eichner. We take a look at the Bee Gees/Peter Frampton mess-a-thon theatrical feature SGT. PEPPER’S LONELY HEARTS CLUB BAND.

We also discuss how Jake turned his childhood cable access show (shot in his bedroom!) into a full-fledged MTV show, getting his hair cut on TV by Kim Gordon, the day Cypress Hill showed up to his bedroom, the difficulties of the MTV show getting cancelled and his struggle with addiction, how the Beatles were less protective of their legacy than we thought, the military aspects of Sgt. Pepper's, how we never noticed the military aspects of Sgt. Pepper’s, the legacy of Robert Stigwood’s powerhouse career, Grease, Robin Gibb’s grandiose delusion that this film’s music was going to replace the legacy of The Beatles' original, how this was Steve Martin’s film debut, how it felt watching the film as kids, the movie Car Wash, the PG-13 version of Saturday Night Fever, the cult musical film The Apple, the fight scene between Peter Frampton & Steven Tyler of Aerosmith, the incredible Alice Cooper cult leader scene, Sandy Farina as Strawberry Fields, speculating if anyone ever cried watching the film, Xanadu, Billy Preston saving the day, our alternate endings of Sgt. Pepper's, who are all the artists that appeared in the film's big finale, finding peace of mind from just hanging out in a video store and more!

So let's run from that wicked Mean Mr. Mustard and his two latex-clad gimb-bots on this week's episode of Revolutions Per Movie!

ENCORE PRESENTATION (PADDY CONSIDINE: 'MobLand' 'House Of The Dragons' & Riding The Low on GUIDED BY VOICES' 'Watch Me Jumpstart') Jun 03, 2025
    Show notes

Hey everyone...in honor of our upcoming 100th episode (!!!), I'll be occasionally re-releasing some of my favorite past conversations. And why not start with a bang: Actor, Musician & Director Paddy Considine onhis favorite band Guided By Voices and their documentary Watch Me Jumpstart (Episode 34 which originally aired on May 2nd, 2024).

Now that you've all caught up with Paddy and the rest of the Harrigan family on the season finale of MobLand & his band Riding The Low releasing their latest 12" EP (Above And Beyond), it's time to revisit this episode where we discuss this band that brought us together and how this documentary changed our lives forever.

    The original podcast show notes:

This week, we talked to the actor (House Of The Dragons, 24 Hour Party People, The World’s End), musician (Riding The Low), writer/director (Tyrannosaur, Journeyman) Paddy Considine, about his all-time favorite band (in any universe), Guided By Voices and the documentary Watch Me Jumpstart. We discuss these mythical legends of Dayton, what it was like for Chris being in the band and working with Pollard, Pollard’s incredible work ethic and output, Paddy’s trip from the UK to visit Ohio for the first time and taking a GBV/Bob Pollard tour of Dayton, the eureka moment of understanding the band, wrapping your mind around Bob's lyrics, the early confusion of why, how and who was recording this music, being under-appreciated by the establishment, GBV's influence on Paddy's acting writing & music, Pollard's legendary mix-tapes, turning people onto the band, the obsession of collecting Pollard's entire discography, beer, basements and talking to Bono about Guided By Voices.

So, disarm the settlers, and let’s go deep into the world of Guided By Voices on this episode of Revolutions Per Movie.

‘IT'S ALL GONNA BREAK FEATURING BROKEN SOCIAL SCENE’ w/ Stephen Chung May 22, 2025
    Show notes

This week I’m joined by Stephen Chung, the director of IT’S ALL GONNA BREAK -- a documentary about the band BROKEN SOCIAL SCENE.

We discuss Stephen’s decades-long friendship with Broken Social Scene and his fly-on-the-wall documentation of the band, how they all met, why the band did not want an earlier version of their documentary to come out, Stephen’s breaking out of his shyness through his love of music and photography, how the film's story was told through the lens of Stephen's life as an immigrant kid living in Toronto, how to stay sane while making a documentary about a band with over 25 members, capturing the moment in the studio where Broken Social Scene really became Broken Social Scene, when to turn the camera off and how to know when to turn it back on again, how a documentary is truly never done, the making of the iconic Cause = Time music video, why music documentaries are so divisive & much more.

So round up your favorite 18 friends and let's start a band on this week's episode of Revolutions Per Movie.

BONUS EPISODE: A Very Opinionated Look At URGH! A MUSIC WAR May 18, 2025
    Show notes

A Very Opinionated Look At URGH! A MUSIC WAR--CHAPTER THIRTY-THREE: An interview with Lesley Woods of Au Pairs

Hello everyone! This week, I’m releasing this extra-special episode from the Revolutions Per Movie Patreon for everyone to hear!

It's an incredible conversation with a complete legend—Lesley Woods of Au Pairs, who has also been an immigration lawyer in the UK for over thirty years. Anyone who has been listening to the URGH! A MUSIC WAR PODCAST knows that Lesley's performance blew open my and Chaki’s head with her slashing music and sexual politics lyrics…something that was new and necessary for young kids witnessing this film. So getting to talk to Lesley was an honor.

We talk about the origin of Au Pairs at a bus stop, Lesley’s political awakening in college, being banned by the BBC, how the podcast helped Lesley watch the film for the first time, the ever-present blood on her guitar, the band's first 7” Kerb Crawler, the way the band moved around on stage, what the band wanted to do differently on their 2nd LP, why the band gravitated towards music to dance to that was still protest music, the difference for Lesley writing music then and now, the incredible Urgh lineup they played with Gang of Four, Mekons & Steel Pulse, the trouble with music journalism and its attitudes towards women in the industry, how Lesley turned her back on music for a spell, why she turned to immigration and refugee law in the UK, freedom of expression and the right to hold your opinion, Thatcher's Section 28 law banning queer literature and references in schools, Gavin Friday of The Virgin Prunes, how Lesley found her way back to music and performing with members of Thurston Moore's band & Big Joanie, plus Lesley Woods explains why it really was an actual MUSIC WAR!!!

If you enjoy the show, please consider joining at patreon.com/revolutionspermovie to support this completely independent endeavor (plus get access to over 170 episodes of Revolutions Per Movie, a 7" flexidisc with Ann Magnuson, Vanessa Briscoe Hay & Peter Buck, stickers, and more). Thanks!

'THE PUNK SINGER' w/ Ezra Furman May 15, 2025
    Show notes

This week I am joined by musician, author, and songwriter Ezra Furman, who picked the Kathleen Hanna documentary THE PUNK SINGER to discuss. We talk about Ezra’s process of writing her lyrics, the headspace of making a record, the directness of Kathleen Hanna’s lyrics, and how her lyrical approach changed from Bikini Kill to Le Tigre, the notion of audiences and bands protecting each other, Kathleen urging 'girls to the front' and how Ezra still is working on that at her own shows, being misunderstood as an artist, how the film shows self-documentation coming into full bloom during this era, how even the greatest bands have to break up, myths in rock, how the film reveals Kathleen’s illness that led to the break up of Le Tigre, gender bias in the medical system and the exhaustion of psychological burnout in music, Ezra’s experience having to stand up for and stand up to her fans and more!

REVOLUTIONS PER MOVIE LIVE w/ PAUL WILLIAMS & PORTUGAL. THE MAN May 08, 2025
    Show notes

This week’s episode was recorded in front of a live audience on Feb. 7th, 2025, at Cinema 21 in Portland, Oregon. Beloved composer, musician, and iconic actor PAUL WILLIAMS joined us to discuss the film we screened that night, PHANTOM OF THE PARADISE, as well as his impressive and long career in film and music.

Paul talks about his experiences working with director Brian De Palma, juggling acting and composing songs for fellow actors William Finley, Gerrit Graham, and Jessica Harper, his stylistic influences for writing the soundtrack, the joy in playing a bastard like Swan and even how Phantom eventually found an audience with the help of some dedicated Winnipeggers.

He also shares fascinating stories about his prolific work output, including composing for Jim Henson, how Burt Reynolds got the idea to put him in Smokey & The Bandit, writing songs for the Carpenters, Barbara Streisand & Ishtar, meeting songwriting deadlines while touring with Liza Minelli, how it felt when Phantom superfans Daft Punk reached out to him to collaborate on their music, and so much more.

And as if that wasn’t enough, there’s also a live performance from Paul’s latest collaborators, PORTUGAL. THE MAN, which includes a lovely Phantom Of The Paradise tip of the hat.

Thanks again to all who donated their time and energy to make this beautiful event happen! Enjoy!

PAVEMENT WEEK: EP6: 'SLANTED! ENCHANTED! A PAVEMENT MUSICAL' w/ Michael Esper May 05, 2025
    Show notes

For today’s episode of Revolutions Per Movie’s Pavement Week (Episode #6 out #5…right?), I am joined by actor Michael Esper who played the lead role (Essem) in the musical Slanted! Enchanted! A Pavement Musical that is featured in the new documentary Pavements.

We discuss how Michael first got involved in the project and whether or not he felt the musical was earnest or a put-on, the mixed bag that often is a jukebox musical, whether or not his fellow actors knew about Pavement and their music before becoming part of the musical, jamming over 40 Pavement songs into 80 minutes of stage time, Michael feeling like he was losing your mind on stage, the plot and musical theater tropes used in the Slanted musical, could this format have worked for any other band besides Pavement, Michael working with David Bowie on one of his last creative stage projects before his death, how much freedom does a stage performer have from night to night, Michael getting to share an emotional moment from the stage of the musical with his sister (who was also a huge Pavement fan), the absurd leap that an audience has to take with the performers in a musical, how the Slanted musical was an actual love letter to the band and more!

So bring on the major leagues with this soon-to-be Tony-nominated podcast episode of Revolutions Per Movie & its subsidiary Pavement Week.

PAVEMENT WEEK: EP 5: 'PAVEMENTS' w/ SPIRAL STAIRS & ROBERT GREENE May 02, 2025
    Show notes

For the finale of Revolutions Per Movie’s Pavement Week, we are joined by Pavement’s Spiral Stairs (aka Scott Kannberg) & Robert Greene, editor/producer of the new documentary Pavements.

We discuss its kaleidoscopic storytelling, which weaves together a star-studded biopic, a traditional band documentary, a Pavement museum, and the Pavement jukebox musical all into a feature-length film.

We also talk about Robert’s long-term push-pull artistic relationship with the film’s director Alex Ross Perry, Spiral’s involvement with Louder Than You Think (a documentary about early Pavement drummer Gary Young), the process of recording the Pavement EP Watery, Domestic, the sadness surrounding Pavement’s initial breakup, how the film helped Spiral appreciate what the band accomplished, the epic saga of Spiral vs. Lollapalooza, how the "biopic" in Pavements cut close to the bone while still being completely false, the elevated mystery surrounding Pavement, why their three-sided record Wowee Zowee influenced the final edit of the film, the forthcoming soundtrack LP, the future of Pavement and much more!

There's no culture!!! There's no spies!!!

So let's end Pavement Week with this heartfelt, inspiring, and hilarious episode of Revolutions Per Movie.
