ENCORE PRESENTATION: REVOLUTIONS PER MOVIE LIVE w/ PETER BUCK Oct 21, 2025
    Show notes

As I head past my 2nd anniversary for Revolutions Per Movie, what would be more appropriate than my first-ever Revolutions Per Movie live show back in 2023 with the one and only Peter Buck of R.E.M.!!! Two magical things kicked off before we even got on stage: 1) Peter bought everyone's food and drink for anyone who walked out of REMbyMTV and went to the snack bar, and 2) Peter asked if I could get the audience to sing the Darth Vader theme song as he walked to the stage (because of the cape he was wearing). So enjoy and thanks for supporting the show. (Episode 19 originally aired Jan. 18th 2024).

    THE ORIGINAL SHOW NOTES:

This week’s episode was recorded in front of a live audience on Dec. 5th, 2023, at Cinema 21 in Portland, Oregon. Peter Buck of R.E.M. joined us to discuss the documentary R.E.M. by MTV, his early years devouring music, moving to Athens, his first impressions of his bandmates, the surprises of seeing Michael grow as a performer, their relationship with the press, answering fan mail (including Chris reading a letter written to the band in 1984), what influenced songs like Harbourcoat, Michael’s approach to Man On The Moon and so much more.

We also raised over $4900 for The Jeremy Wilson Foundation, which supports musicians and music industry workers in Oregon during times of medical or health-related challenges. Find out more at thejwf.org

"THE YOUNG GIRLS OF ROCHEFORT" w/ Frank Conniff Oct 16, 2025
    Show notes

This week, my guest is the legendary FRANK CONNIFF (of Mystery Science Theater 3000 fame!!!), who picked the equally legendary Jacques Demy film, The Young Girls Of Rochefort!, to discuss as his music film!!

We discuss Frank’s introduction into the MST3K world, how their show grew through grass roots and tape trading, the process of how MST3K would put together a show every week, the lack of cable tv in the US when their show first came on, how MST3K felt like being in a band for Frank, how he picked the films for their show and what the failsafes for jokes were, Ed Wood, can a movie like The Young Girls Of Rochefort get riffed on, actor Jack Webb’s anti-hippie stance, The Umbrellas Of Cherbourg, Criterion laser discs, Frank accidentally coming across Rochefort on tv, how Demy's films could transport you emotionally with just a color, the incredible Michele Legrand score that is relentlessly non-stop fantastic, how the film casually drops in a serial killer storyline, Catherine Deneuve and her real-life sister Françoise Dorléac's performances in the film together, West Side Story and actor George Chakiris, how they shot two different versions of Rochefort at the same time (one in French and one in English), how sexy everyone looks in the film, the surprise of Gene Kelly showing up in this film and his later fllm roles including Viva Knievel & Xandau and more!

So let's turn around on a moment's notice and suddenly leap into the air as soon as someone beautiful has just passed us on the street on this week's Revolutions Per Movie!!!

'THE WOMEN OF PARLIAMENT-FUNKADELIC' w/ Seth Neblett Oct 09, 2025
    Show notes

This week, I talk to Seth Neblett (the son of the queen of funk, Mallia Franklin of Parliament-Funkadelic & Parlet & author of his new book Mothership Connected: The Women of Parliament-Funkadelic).

We talk about how Seth was convinced by Bootsy Collins to tell his mother and the women of P-Funk's stories, how he initially assumed this tale was going to be told as a documentary, Mallia Franklin's appearance in the Don Letts docuemntary Tales Of Dr. Funkenstein, Seth (at age 6) being taken by his grandmother to go watch his mom perform with Parliament/Parlet for the first time, how he was able to narrow down this immense story from all the hudnreds of characters in this group's varied history, the strgggles with having your Mom be a recording and touring star, how Mallia Franklin brought elements to the band that changed music FOREVER, George Clinton and his initial band The Parliments, how Mallia's vocals are all over their recoridngs from Maggot Brain to Atomic Dog, the vast age diffrerences within the band, Mallia being called "the geiger counter" because her musical institncts were so incredible on who to bring into the p-funk world (like Bootsy Collins & Junie Morrison), how we often take a documentary's storytelling a the truth, being the "Dog & Cat Lady", why you can see so many full concert footage from Parliment's heyday, Neil Bogart of Casblanca Records and the courting of Mallia Fraklin, the genesis of the female-led spin off groups Parlet and Brides Of Funkenstein, why George Clinton put all various bands on diffferent record labels, how Geroge often didn’t want his various bands to get bigger than him, how young the members of P-Funk were and how they often were not prepared for the psychological components of being part of it, Seth's thoughts on following up the book with a documentary vs a narritave series, how the women of P-Funk were not being invited to the induction ceremonies of the Grammys and Rock and Roll Hall Of Fame, who should play his mom in the movie version of this story and more.

So let's celebrate the queens of P-Funk forever on this week's episode of Revolutions Per Movie.

    Show notes

This week I'm joined by author and documentary filmmaker Grant McPhee, who directed three amazing films about the Scottish underground music scenes (Big Gold Dream, The Glasgow School, Teenage Superstars).

We discuss the differences between writing his book Postcards From Scotland and making these films, the UK press and their relationships with Scottish bands, the turmoil at the early Jesus & Mary Chain shows, both Postcard & Fast Product Records influencing Factory & Rough Trade records, how The Bay City Rollers were a massive influence on the early indie music scene, the genesis and integrity of Teenage Fanclub, early Scottish post-punk bands Josef K and Scars, choosing Kim Deal of The Breeders & Robert Foster of The Go-Betweens to narrate the films, the stress of making documentaries, the supportiveness of the Scottish music scenes, The Vaselines & Captain America being massive influences on (and friends) of Nirvana, BMX Bandits, Orange Juice and Soup Dragons changing their sounds, Stephen Pastel's ears getting sunburned after a haircut and more!

So let's start a musical riot in under 12 minutes on this week's revolutions per movie!

'THE MUSIC VIDEOS OF SLOAN' w/ Jay Ferguson & Chris Murphy of SLOAN Sep 25, 2025
    Show notes

This week, Jay Ferguson & Chris Murphy of the legendary Canadian band Sloan join me to discuss their 30+ year recording career (with the same four original band members!) as well as their charming and extensive videography.

We also discuss how Sloan carves out space for all four songwriters on each record and the democracy within the band's ethos, the recent 'fake' movie trailers they've made for their new record, the challenges of getting all the band members on the same page to make a music video, the mystery behind Andrew’s hypnotic performances (the ‘less is more’ factor), their significant work archiving their visual and audio legacy, the band’s visual demands for the 'Coax Me' video that initially were not met, the early batch of music videos filmed during their first trip to NYC and their CBGB show in 1992, sticking to their guns when Geffen Records executives didn't get their 2nd album (the stone-cold classic Twice Removed), the film tributes within their videos from Easy Rider to Privilege and To Sir With Love, The MTV of Canada: Much Music, the difficulties in working with other film directors, did Andrew actually cry when he was pushed in the "Losing California" video, the range of budgets on their music videos, The Rolling Stones and their "Start Me Up" video, Sloan's short film comedy classic ‘THE EMPEROR SLAPS BACK’, bands not coming to your hometown to perform, how the band has had to adapt to keep going for the last 30 years and so much more!

So quiet on the set... shhh, please don’t set off the 'Reverb Siren' in Jay's living room... during this week's episode of Revolutions Per Movie!

    Show notes

Welcome to this special bite-sized Bonus Episode of Revolutions Per Movie with Linus O’Brien, director of “Strange Journey: The Story Of Rocky Horror", which documents the cult phenomenon created by his father, Richard O’Brien.

We talk about Richard’s curious charisma, his personal struggles & his accidental creation of Rocky Horror, Drag Race's Trixie Mattel’s early life-changing experience with the film, how Rocky screenings continue to provide a safe space for everybody to be their authentic self, Tim Curry and Susan Sarandon, Rocky Horror being the longest running theatrical release in the history of film (and how the Clinton St Theater continued to run the movie to an empty theater during the pandemic so the run wouldn't be broken), the amazing archival footage of teenage Michael Stipe of R.E.M. speaking in the afterglow of the movie while dressed as Frank-N-Furter, 70s newscasters trying to crack the whys of Rocky, the live shadowcasts and toast & rice, and how the legacy of Rocky Horror boils down to two words: community and connection.

So please support this great film in person this weekend when it’s being independently released in theaters all over the world, and continue to support indie!

    Show notes

The Second Anniversary Show w/ Kate Pierson of The B-52s

This week, I am honored to celebrate the second anniversary of Revolutions Per Movie with one of my top musical heroes: the one and only Kate Pierson of The B-52s!!!

We discuss the influence of Fellini on Kate & The B-52s (who were originally going to call themselves 'Fellini's Children'), the early sounds and films that made a young Kate Pierson into who she is, film noir, the protest folk music of her first band 'The Sun Donuts', what drew Kate to Athens, GA; Kate finding her unique singing style, French New Wave films, how The B-52s were not allowed to play bars in Athens and instead opted for house parties, the early jobs of the band members, how Club 57 and The Mudd Club in NYC embraced the band, how much a wig cost back in 1978, how the band worked out the vocal phrasing and melody parts of the three vocalists, Jeremy Ayers being a pied piper of the Athens scene, The Plastics, the original house that The B-52s bought and lived in together, why there were no early B-52s music videos until Whammy, Kate's first music equipment and her amazing guitar parts, how different it is making music videos now vs. in the 80s and so much more.

So let's dance this mess around on this week's episode of Revolutions Per Movie!

    Show notes

This week, I am joined by the Oscar and Emmy-nominated filmmaker Eddie Schmidt (Chain Camera, This Film Is Not Yet Rated, Twist Of Faith), who chose to discuss the Tim Robbins/John Cusack music video comedy TAPEHEADS.

We talk about how this film was omnipresent in every video rental store, how Eddie's background in improv comedy helped him with his career in documentary filmmaking, Eddie’s amazing documentary THIS IS NOT YET RATED about the unfair and corrupt film rating board here in the U.S., the difficulties in starting to make a documentary, the similarities between Tapeheads and Eddie's life as a young filmmaker, how Tapeheads flopped upon its theatrical release but found a home on the Boston Midnight Movie circuit, My Dinner With Jimi, how this film pre-dates Wayne’s World by 4 years, making early movies as kids, the fashion style of the characters in the film, how fully committed the actors were to the comedy in this film, artists’ lofts depicted in movies, Roscoe’s House Of Chicken, how Chris had forgotten that he had seen this film many many many times until rewatching it, Devo, Fishbone, Circle Jerks & Jello Biafra's participation in the film, making art during the Reagan era, Eddie’s real life Tapeheads moment with John Cusack, the fake music videos in the film, claymation, The Blender Children portrayed by The Lords of the New Church, Susan Terrell, the uncredited Courtney Love appearance, Bachelor Party, how the film industry and indie film has changed over the years, the beauty of indie movie theaters in the 80s, our love of film soundtrack albums and more.

So let's dump some paint on our music video stars and make a million on this week's Revolutions Per Movie!

ENCORE PRESENTATION: 'NIRVANA: LIVE! TONIGHT! SOLD OUT!' w/ Gary Jarman Sep 09, 2025
    Show notes

Hey everyone...welcome to our bi-monthly ENCORE PRESENTATION of classic REVOLUTIONS PER MOVIE episodes from the vault! On this episode, I was joined by GARY JARMAN of the UK band THE CRIBS, who discussee a film that completely changed his life (along with his brothers) and absolutely informed his leap into making music--the documentary NIRVANA: LIVE! TONIGHT! SOLD OUT! It's a beautiful, heartfelt episode...Enjoy!

(Episode 20 originally aired on Jan. 25th, 2024).

    The original show notes:

This week, we talk to Gary Jarman of the UK band The Cribs, who chose a film so close to his (and his brother’s) heart, NIRVANA LIVE! TONIGHT! SOLD OUT! We discussed the massive influence this VHS tape had on the Jarman family and their future in rock, from their decision not to play encores to their affinity for putting noise into their melodies. We also discuss what it was like to come from such a small town where they had never seen anything on a punk level before, the concept of selling out, writing music or lyrics first, saving up stationary store coupons to buy Nirvana cassettes, Britpop, opening for Nirvana the day their album went gold, sabotaging your own live show, dealing with tabloids and the British music press, fantasizing about destroying the Top Of The Pops studio, not playing encores & the endless search for “the next Nirvana.”

So come dive into the drum set on this episode of Revolutions Per Movie!
