    The ethnically split island of Cyprus is a persistent source of tension between Greece and Turkey, which are both partners in NATO but are at odds over numerous issues. Their differences are laid bare in Nicosia, the world's last remaining divided capital city with a buffer zone controlled by the United Nations. Agreement between Turkey and Greece is seemingly a long way off, but that hasn't stopped residents from forming friendships.

    Prisoner exchange, Israel retaliation fears and Olympic boxing controversy Aug 02, 2024

    Journalist Evan Gershkovich and ex-US Marine Paul Whelan have returned to the United States, hours after being freed from Russian detention in the biggest prisoner exchange between the two countries since the Cold War. President Joe Biden says the killing of Hamas' leader Ismail Haniyeh is not helpful for reaching a ceasefire in Gaza. Italian boxer Angela Carini has pulled out of the Paris Olympics mid-fight after she sustained a series of crunching blows from her Algerian opponent Imane Khelif, who last year failed a gender eligibility test at the World Championships.

Vice President Kamala Harris is to hold her first rally with her new vice presidential nominee on Tuesday, her campaign has confirmed. That's as some Republican donors raise concerns over Donald Trump's choice of JD Vance. And the UK in shock after mass stabbing.

    Lebanon escalation fears, Venezuela, US-Iraq and Italy tourism Jul 29, 2024

    Lebanon is braced for Israeli retaliation following a rocket strike that killed 12 teenagers and children at the weekend. Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro and his opposition rival Edmundo Gonzalez have each claimed victory in the presidential election. Iraq wants troops from the US-led military coalition to begin withdrawing in September and to formally end the coalition's work by September 2025. Italy is looking to spread tourism around the country by using vintage railways to give visitors a glimpse of Italy’s hidden hamlets.
