    Russian attacks in Ukraine, Middle East tensions, Telegram and Oasis Aug 27, 2024

    Russia pounds Ukraine with missiles and drones for the second day in a row. America’s top general says the near-term risk of a broader war in the Middle East has eased somewhat, but Iran still poses a significant danger. Telegram boss Pavel Durov could be held in police custody until Wednesday as French prosecutors question him as part of a probe into child pornography, drug trafficking and fraudulent transactions on the platform. And British band Oasis will reunite for a 2025 tour.

    Biden’s peace push, Walz at DNC, Canada rail strike and Jackson Hole Aug 22, 2024

    U.S. President Joe Biden has pressed Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on the urgency of sealing a deal for a truce in Gaza. Vice presidential candidate Tim Walz has vowed that he and presidential running mate Kamala Harris would triumph over Republican Donald Trump in November's U.S. election. Canadian National Railway and Canadian Pacific Kansas City have shut down their rail networks and locked out nearly 10,000 workers, after unsuccessful negotiations with a major labor union. The Jackson Hole symposium gets underway later, but attention is on the hotly anticipated speech by Fed Chair Jerome Powell on Friday.

    Obamas at the DNC, Trump’s policy focus and India cricket rights Aug 21, 2024

Meanwhile, Trump says he would open "dozens and dozens more" U.S. power plants, ending what he called the "anti-American energy crusade." In the biggest setback so far to Disney and Reliance's plans to strike a $8.5 billion India merger, the country's antitrust body has reached an initial assessment that the deal harms competition due to their power over cricket rights.

    President Joe Biden cemented the Democratic Party's elevation of Kamala Harris to lead the fight for the White House against Republican Donald Trump with a convention speech that praised his vice president as the best hope for preserving American democracy. U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken says Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has accepted a "bridging proposal" to tackle disagreements blocking a ceasefire deal in Gaza, and has urged Hamas to do the same.

    DNC protests, Venezuela’s opposition and UK Black community fears Aug 19, 2024

    Democrats are gathered in Chicago to celebrate Vice President Kamala Harris' campaign for the White House, but the start of the four-day Democratic National Convention is expected also to draw tens of thousands of protesters. Venezuela's political opposition and its supporters have gathered in cities around the country to demand recognition of what they say is their candidate's resounding victory in a presidential vote nearly three weeks ago. How recent riots have opened old wounds for Britain’s black community, with fears of further racist violence.

    US arms policy in Russia, Trump and Harris' econ policy, Medicare and India protests Aug 16, 2024

    An influential aide to Russian President Vladimir Putin has claimed that the West and the U.S.-led NATO alliance was directly involved in planning Ukraine's surprise attack on Russia’s Kursk region. The US has negotiated down the prices of 10 top-selling prescription drugs used by Medicare by as much as 79%, hoping to save $6 billion in the first year. It is part of Democrat attempts to ease anger about high prices ahead of November elections as Kamala Harris and Donald Trump go head-to-head over the economy. In India, doctors have called for more than a million colleagues to provide only essential services on Saturday, in a protest over the brutal rape and murder of a medic.
