    Ashlee Symcox, RN, FNTP is a Registered Nurse and Functional Nutritional Therapy Practitioner. She worked 11 years in the Emergency Department where she witnessed, first hand, the devastation of chronic Illness on peoples' lives.

    After dealing with a health set-back herself, she found answers hard to come by in the conventional medical model.     In this episode, Avanti Kumar Singh, MD teaches Ayurveda tools for healing. She reveals the importance of meditation, yoga, and breath work to improve your mental and physical health.

    Dr. Avanti began her career as an ER doctor. She quickly recognized the limitations of Western medicine and believed she and her patients deserved more. This realization led her to become a practitioner of Ayurveda, a 5,000-year-old ancient healing practice.

    Through her studies and travels, as well as her upbringing in a first-generation South Asian household, Dr. Avanti learned that each of us has the innate ability to attain and maintain our own optimal health using the simple habits of Ayurveda, including meditation, yoga, breath, food, and circadian routines.

    Dr. Avanti is a certified plant-based professional, certified yoga therapist, and host of the top-rated health and wellness podcast, The Healing Catalyst. In 2020, she self-published her first book, The Health Catalyst: How to Harness the Power of Ayurveda and Achieve Optimal Wellness.     Dr. Sharon Bergquist is a Rollins Senior Distinguished Clinician, Master Clinician, and Assistant Professor of Medicine in the Division of General Medicine and Geriatrics at Emory University School of Medicine. She earned her Bachelor of Science from Yale University and medical degree from Harvard Medical School. She completed her internship and residency at Harvard's Brigham and Women's Hospital. She is a Fellow of the American College of Physicians and member of the American College of Lifestyle Medicine.

    Dr. Bergquist strongly believes in personalized and comprehensive health management and incorporates prevention and wellness strategies into her practice. Her expertise includes diabetes and heart disease prevention and management, nutrition and obesity counseling, women's health, and the management of mood disorders such as anxiety and depression.

    Dr. Bergquist is the Medical Director of Emory's Executive Health program and leads the research program at the Paul W. Seavey Comprehensive Internal Medicine Clinic. She also founded and directs Emory Lifestyle Medicine & Wellness. She has been on the Emory faculty since 2000 and sees patients at the Paul W. Seavey Comprehensive Internal Medicine and Emory Executive Health practices.

    In this episode, Dr. Sharon Bergquist joins the show to speak about the truth around aging and what many of us consider age-related diseases. Dr. Bergquist dives into how the aging process affects our muscles, physical wellbeing, and hormones. As we get older, many people experience issues with memory and forgetfulness.     Joseph Houmard, PhD is a professor in the Department of Exercise & Sport Science and Director of the Human Performance Laboratory at East Carolina University in Greenville, NC.

    Dr. Houmard is an author of more than 150 scientific papers and book chapters and has been funded by the National Institutes of Health for his research. Dr. Houmard’s research focuses on skeletal muscle metabolism and how it is altered with conditions such as aging, insulin, resistance, and obesity and how interventions such as weight loss and exercise exert their positive effects.

    In this episode, Dr. Houmard discusses the inspiration behind his career researching skeletal muscle metabolism. He dives deep into the muscles and why stress is critical for strength, endurance, and overall health. Dr. Houmard explains how exercise is crucial for insulin sensitivity and the importance of healthy skeletal muscles.
