    Redefining Movement

Redefining Movement, the LYT podcast, is hosted by two Physical Therapists: Lara Heimann, founder of LYT, and Kristin Williams, COO & Senior LYT Instructor. Together, they explore movement through the lens of physical therapy, neuroscience, and the lived experience of being human.

Blending scientific insights with soulful perspectives, Lara and Kristin transform our understanding of how our bodies and minds interact. Though the show has changed in several ways since the first episode in 2018, the mission remains steadfast and clear: to help us find freedom and feel empowered through intelligent movement patterns and a compassionate outlook, so we can all live more capable, connected, and uplifted lives.

Today's podcast is all about the power to do good. What often comes to mind when we think about power is the alpha male standing tall, having lots of money and having lots of ability to make an impact. But powerful leaders can operate by creating fear or by commanding respect. I think of power as the ability to do good things for others and invite us all to reframe power and check that we are assigning power to people who deserve respect.

147 | How to cleanse if you're feeling like you need a food reset Oct 11, 2019
    Show notes

When we cleanse we’re giving our digestive system a break so it’s not overloaded with the work of digesting, metabolizing and excreting all the stuff that we put in there. If our digestive system has less to deal with, it frees up energy that can be used in other parts of the body. Cleansing is also a great time to reframe our ideas about food and make sure we’re really seeing it as fuel. In this episode I cover my favorite things to do during a cleanse.

145 | Less waste; more compassion | with Amelia Barnes Oct 07, 2019
    Show notes

Today I’m talking to Amelia Barnes. Amelia is a yoga teacher. She also is the creator of PranaVida, an eco-friendly clothing brand, a passionate vegan and a pioneer of the no waste lifestyle. And she's doing it all while raising two young children. In this episode we chat about how we are sold the idea of convenience, but producing unnecessary waste is going to cause a lot of inconvenience in the form of landfill and environmental problems. We also cover how the zero waste movement is largely led by women, the benefits of veganism, how Amelia relied on her intuition and maker skills to start her clothing business and how she got through the worst of her grief when her infant son died.

144 | How to help someone who doesn't want to be helped Oct 04, 2019
    Show notes

How do you help someone, for example a family member in pain who doesn't want to listen to you, do yoga, move their body or eat differently? This is a tough one because pain can cause resentment and anger and make it more difficult for people to take advice. It’s very easy to think, gosh, I have so many things I could help this person with. I could tell them about movement, about how they should be eating more healthfully and closer to the earth. But it’s important to take it slowly, especially with family. I’ve created a simple acronym, HELP, to assist when you see someone close to you struggling.

    143 | Building confidence Oct 02, 2019
    Show notes

Today I’m talking about a crisis of confidence in teaching. It doesn’t have to be about teaching yoga, it could be about anything. But yoga teachers often experience times when they lack confidence. It doesn’t mean you should stop teaching or that you’re an imposter, but perhaps that you’re standing in a void of confidence believing you can't do what you need to instruct in the way you'd like to. Listen to the episode for my top tips on getting through these moments and becoming more confident.

141 | Can we live without an agenda? Sep 27, 2019
    Show notes

Can we live without an agenda? I started thinking about this after I was reading from a Buddhist book of philosophy released by Shambhala Pocket Classics. I think that we can all benefit from holding your tongue and not saying what’s on your mind just because you want your opinion to be stated. When you're on the right path, you don't need to prove to somebody else what you're doing. And you don't need to prove to somebody else what they're doing differently is wrong. Too many agendas are being bumped around and we can see what happens when those agendas are not all good or noble, or of service to all. So I think the point here is, if we have any agenda, it should be to do good in the world, to be our best selves and to notice when our need for security and validation in the form of the ego comes up.

    140 | What is a crick in the neck? Sep 25, 2019
    Show notes

In this episode I cover what causes a crick in the neck, how to avoid getting one and how you can help your neck to recover. When people say they have a crick in the neck it’s usually because they’ve woken up to find their neck is stiff and sore. Sometimes they can't turn their head. One reason it can happen is that you slept weird. But there's also underlying factors. Many people spend the most time at work and commuting to and from work. When we sit and work or drive for a long period of time, we're staying in one position, and our neck is often offset, and that sets it up for strain. We carry that potential for strain and even the emotional stresses that we incur throughout our day into our sleep.
