    Redefining Movement

Redefining Movement, the LYT podcast, is hosted by two Physical Therapists: Lara Heimann, founder of LYT, and Kristin Williams, COO & Senior LYT Instructor. Together, they explore movement through the lens of physical therapy, neuroscience, and the lived experience of being human.

Blending scientific insights with soulful perspectives, Lara and Kristin transform our understanding of how our bodies and minds interact. Though the show has changed in several ways since the first episode in 2018, the mission remains steadfast and clear: to help us find freedom and feel empowered through intelligent movement patterns and a compassionate outlook, so we can all live more capable, connected, and uplifted lives.

There’s always room for improvement on how we behave, move, respond and live our lives. And that's a good thing. Because it means that we can be better than we were in the recent or distant past. In yoga in particular we’re always pursuing a higher consciousness and a higher state of being. Listen to the episode to find out how to support your own evolution even when you’re weighed down by self-criticism, trauma or judgement of others.

We need to add more fun and functional movements into our exercise programs because things like crawling and jumping can help us so much physically and emotionally. So go out there and have fun with movement, even in yoga! Life is too serious. Let's be lighter and let's help each other out by giving ourselves permission to be centered in joy and spirit.

In this episode I talk about going to see Madonna perform. Everyone had their phones locked into little bags, so we couldn’t access them. This meant that nobody could record her on stage, but also that everyone was much more present. Sadly, I don't even remember the last time I was around 3,000 people and no-one had their phone out.

Can you bring this rule into your life and have some technology-free time? Let’s put our phones out of sight and spend time truly engaged in what we’re doing.

    174 | Friday Friendships Dec 13, 2019
    Show notes

Research shows that Americans are becoming more and more socially isolated. The impact on health and longevity is huge because people who are isolated are more likely to die prematurely than people who have strong social relationships. The effects of social links on life span are actually 2X the effects of exercising and equivalent to quitting smoking!

In this episode I use the acronym FRIEND to talk about all the ways we can nourish and cultivate friendships in this modern life. So even if you’ve been feeling like you haven’t paid enough attention to your friendships lately, there’s so much you can do to fix that.

    172 | 15 Minutes to Move Dec 09, 2019
    Show notes

Today is Movement Monday, and I’m giving you a quick routine for when you only have 15 minutes.

Tip one is to get it done in the morning unless you’re better with exercising at night. When you move early in the day, you’re more likely to move better and be more consistent with it. It also inspires you to move more. Newton's law says that things at rest want to stay at rest and things in motion want to stay in motion. So moving for 15 minutes might turn into moving for 30-60 minutes or multiple 15-minute sessions.

This routine will help you move your shoulders, weight-bear on your hands, activate the core, and give you a boost of energy. It’ll also improve your mood and overall health. Tune into the episode to get the full rundown.

171 | The Entrepreneurial Side of Teaching Yoga | with Brett Larkin Dec 06, 2019

Brett Larkin started playing around with video and yoga about eight years ago, and that spiraled into what is now her full-time job. She teaches yoga on YouTube, has a mobile app membership site and does online teacher trainings. Brett never saw herself making a livable income from teaching yoga, so showing other people that it is possible to make money doing what you love is one of her greatest passions.

Do you secretly think you’re not good enough despite all your accomplishments? You might be an overachiever. Overachievers struggle to feel satisfied because their drive to achieve is often based on fear. There’s probably a little overachiever in all of this but in this episode I break down how to know when you’ve crossed the line and cover four things you can do to show yourself some grace.
