Steve Zahn. Apr 28, 2020

Show notes

Steve Zahn (Reality Bites, Friends, That Thing You Do, Sahara, Saving Silverman, Dallas Buyers Club, Suburbia...) is so fun onscreen that he's kinda the best thing about every movie he's in. Or at least every scene.

Last spring, Steve was in town for the Brooklyn Film Festival, where his short film, I'm No Holiday, written and directed by his friend and fellow actor Rick Gomez, was screening.

So I met him in Williamsburg. We set up the voice recorder. And later, a camera. (You can see him and me do a funny video with random questions at YouTube.com/reallyfamous.) Here's the result.

You'll hear about:

He laughs at which movies and TV shows I watched to "research" him
How Ben Stiller "discovered" him
Reality Bites
Friends
Shattered Glass
Saving Silverman
Theater acting
Bonding with Ethan Hawke
The 5 people he still keeps in touch with, which includes a few phenomenal (and famous) actors
The timeless magic of That Thing You Do
Tom Hanks
Face Deals (stay tuned!)
Auditioning
The American Repertory Theater, aka The ART Institute at Harvard University
Self-tape, or doing auditions at home and uploading them to Vimeo
His wife, successful writer Robyn Peterman
Social media, marketing and live tweeting
Luck vs. hard work
Being recognized
The White House Correspondents' Dinner
Being a farmer
Compassion
Being real
The theater of politicians
Beavis and Butthead
Mike Judge
Bradley Whitford
It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia
Doctor Zhivago
Bridge Too Far
Quibi

Show notes

UPDATE: I'll be running LOTS of extra podcasts for you in the upcoming weeks, because human connection and entertainment are as vital as ever. Subscribe to both the podcast + my YouTube channel, starting now.

Comedian, actress and motivational speaker Kim Coles is famous for the comedy sketch show In Living Color and the TV series Living Single. She played Synclaire James, remember?

Kim and I first met a few months ago, when we were both invited to sit on a panel about women in media at the Digital Hollywood conference. When we met, I knew instantly I liked her and wanted to get to know her better, so I invited her on the show.

Fast forward a few months. Kim comes to New York and we record this episode -- at Sardi's, the iconic Broadway restaurant. (Shoutout to Sardi's and my friend Beth.)

Kim and I talk about:

Bill Cosby stories (but not the kind you're expecting)
Self-doubt
Projecting
Becoming a comedian
Hollywood
Expectations
Coincidences and synchronicities and opportunitites
Style
In Living Color
Living Single

Show notes

Today's podcast:

Seinfeld lovers, get ready! Yul Vazquez, who played "Bob the Intimidating Gay Guy" in the Soup Nazi, Puerto Rican Day and The Sponge episodes, is here!

Yul is currently on the stellar HBO series The Outsider with Ben Mendelsohn, Cynthia Erivo and Jason Bateman. It's soooo good.

He was recently in the buzz-y Netflix series Russian Doll (I recommend it!) and Narcos: Mexico and TNT's I Am the Night. You may recognize him from Divorce, Magic City, American Gangster, Bad Boys II, Runaway Bride and sooo much more.

Today we get into a real, honest, personal talk...

In front of a spirited audience at The Stand comedy club in New York City!

This is my 2nd show in my new series of LIVE EVENTS.
