Real Life Runners with Angie and Kevin Brown

This is a show to help real life runners to improve their running and their life, through conversations about training, nutrition, health and wellness, family, and all the crazy things that life throws at us. We want to live the best life we can and to help others do the same. In each episode, we will tackle topics that will make us better runners, better parents, better friends, better partners, and better people. The lessons that we learn from running can carry over into all aspects of our life, and we are here to explore those connections through current research, our experiences, and stories from real people out on the roads and trails, just like you. We are Kevin and Angie Brown, husband and wife, mom and dad, coaches, and runners. Kevin is a marathoner who has been coaching runners for over a decade. Angie holds her doctorate degree in physical therapy and uses running as part of her integrated fitness routine. Together, we want to help make running more accessible to more people, so that more people can gain the benefits of being a Real Life Runner.

    195: The Must-Knows of Base Building Apr 15, 2021
    Show notes

Runners often talk about a base-building phase as though high mileage is the only component. They think of it only as a build up to a longer race, or as something they might "need" to do. Maybe you've heard the term before but don't really understand what it means or why it's used. In this episode, we challenge the idea that base building is only about increasing mileage, and point out some other key components that need to be included in your base building phase. We also encourage all runners to consider a base building phase somewhere in their training year, especially if you've never tried one before. It's a great time to help you build your base as a runner, and to set you up for greater success when race training begins.

    Highlights of the Episode

    What is base-building?

How do all components of running work together?

When to incorporate a base building cycle

    3 components of base building

190: Fueling and Nutrition for Runners with Kristy Baumann Mar 15, 2021
    Show notes

As runners, we understand that food is more than simple nutrition. Food is fuel. While many runners struggle with their poor relationship with food, the bottom line is that you can't optimize your run and training well if you don't fuel properly.

In this episode, Kristy Baumann, a registered dietitian and marathon runner, shares her wisdom about proper fueling and nutrition for runners. We also talk about her journey through her passion for nutrition and running, strategies for fueling your runner's body, and a lot more!

    Highlights of the Episode

    Signs of underfueling for runners

Fueling guide every runner should know

Rebuilding your body trust around food

How to gain control of emotional eating

What is proper nutrition for master runners?

Food freedom VS choosing the right quality of food

    Fat adapted training for runners

    -

Kristy is a registered dietitian, marathon runner, and mother to a two-year-old girl. As a new runner, she thought she was eating healthy to support her training. In reality, she was eating too clean and unknowingly was restricting calories, cutting out fat, ignoring hunger signs, food was constantly on her mind and she had a big sweet tooth. These were all signs of underfueling that resulted in recurring injuries and a poor relationship with food.

It was until she began to change her mindset around food, understand the science of nutrition and how the body works that she was able to fuel properly, feel more energized, and improved her running.

Now she is on a mission to spread the message that restricting food and following fad diets are not the answers. Having a positive relationship with food is the foundation of fueling well as a runner.
