Breaking the Body Image Cycle and a Vulnerability Hangover May 08, 2019
    Show notes

Today's episode I am chatting with Jennifer Roth of Gaia Dawn studios in NJ. Jen is not only an incredible photographer and yoga instructor but she also coaches women on a variety of issues from self-esteem, body image, confidence and more. Jennifer joined our team at the empowered girl movement as one of our ambassadors running empowered girl experience days in her community. Today's conversation we talk about
How important it is that we model self-love and a positive body image of ourselves to our daughters so that they do not feed into the societal standards and views on what women are "supposed to look like". This toxic cycle is what creates low self-esteem and self-hatred and it is our power and responsibility to break that cycle and teach our daughters how to love themselves as they are... We must do it for ourselves first.

She was expecting her first child. She left her career behind to focus on being a full-time Mom. After 1 year her family begged her to go back to work as she was driving everyone nuts with knitted and crocheted items. She again, stepped into the President role at her accounting company and opened its first western branch in Camrose Alberta. Tanya Believes In raising powerful girls we also need to raise knowledgeable boys. Having an only child and a son has made Tanya want to be sure that she send him out into this world truly understanding that no matter what your background, race, or gender nothing should stop you from reaching your dreams but in that we also need to be the champions to help those that are struggling on the path and lift them up along their journey for one day we may need that hand up also. That it is not ok to only know what is right but that we must be willing to stand up and speak up against those that do not.

en(gender)ed - Why we need to Raise Feminist Daughters Apr 24, 2019

Teri Yuan is a social entrepreneur, feminist business consultant, and the host of the weekly podcast, en(gender)ed, which explores the systems, practices and policies that enable gender-based violence and oppression and the solutions to end it. The podcast uses gender as a lens to better understand power and oppression and its impact in the private realm, so as to better recognize and confront it in the public sphere. Teri's journey as an intersectional feminist began in college, where she studied feminist film criticism, post-colonial pedagogy and cultural criticism. Along the way, she has added to her identity--survivor and survivor advocate. She believes that by developing a cultural literacy around power and abuse of power, we can reclaim how we define liberty in relationships and in civic life and solve many of our most urgent social (justice) challenges.

When girls grow up feeling confident in their own bodies they can do important things that matter and change the world. Confidence is like a snowball effect. When we have more confidence we try more things, which builds confidence, etc. When we are pre-occupied by weight and food, we are less likely to go after (and get) what we want out of life, which is a snowball effect of its own.
