    Exploring Emotional Intelligence a How-to approach Nov 21, 2018
    Show notes

The concept of Emotional Intelligence is one that we talk about a lot over here at Raising a Powerful Girl and our new platform for girls the Empowered Girl App. I thought today I would do a quick podcast geared to parents of boys and girls on what emotional intelligence is, the importance and how you can foster it in your home!
With rates of anxiety, depression and even suicide rising for children these days a huge contributing factor is that children do not have the coping skills they need to manage the situations that arise in life and instead are left with these emotions bubbling and boiling inside of them with no way of being processed which can either lead to making poor choices as a reaction to the behavior or the child retreats, feeling “abnormal” or that there is “something wrong” with them leading to isolation.
But before we can even tackle giving children coping skills to manage stress and anxiety we need to start at the beginning and this is Emotional Intelligence.

Girls and Navigating Social Media Nov 14, 2018
    Show notes

Social media is ubiquitous in girls' lives. Too often, parents are not sure what parenting technique to use, opting for a to much or too little approach, or brush social media off entirely- demonizing it or tells their daughters it doesn't matter. These misunderstandings can cause friction between parents and daughters. Informing parents can only benefit them!
Lindsey Turnbell, founder of Miss Heard Media, wants to live on a planet with teen girls who feel understood and appreciated, coffee that comes from the kitchen tap, and an endless supply of macaroni and cheese.
As a girl advocate with close to ten years experience, Lindsey has helped hundreds of girls embrace their most confident, competent selves through the Young Women Leaders Program at the University of Central Florida and MissHeard Media. Using her background in history and leadership development, Lindsey uses her research, writing, and presentation skills to create media and workshop experiences for teen girls that Huffington Post said “chang[es] the global narrative for women.” Her ultimate goal is to help teen girls shape the world by encouraging empathy and global savvy.

The power of really good questions Oct 31, 2018
    Show notes

We all have a set of default questions we ask - "how are you" or "what do you do" or "how was school" - and it's important to realize that the questions we ask shape the answers we get. On top of that, we need to teach girls that relationships are a cornerstone of their happiness, and that they're responsible for helping to nurture these relationships. If we want to raise happier, stronger, more authentically connected girls, we need to, first, make them aware that lots of default questions get very superficial answers, and second, encourage them to ask more meaningful questions that lead to conversations that they can build relationships on.
Sara Blanchard helps communities build connection through conscious conversations. As a writer, facilitator, TEDx speaker, and happiness consultant, Sara holds a safe space for a loosely associated group to connect authentically. Having worked at Goldman Sachs and taught positive psychology at Harvard, she speaks the language of traditional accomplishment, but for over 10 years, Sara has also pursued the science and techniques of well-being as a life coach, mother, and author of Flex Mom. She now bridges the gap between the serious mission of supporting success, and the lighthearted yet impactful actions that build quality relationships, meaning, and happiness in our lives.

The Princess who didn't need to be saved and the powerful woman who created her Oct 24, 2018
    Show notes

Did you grow up reading the classic fairy tales of the princess being saved by the prince or kissing a frog to find their true love? Or how about how in most fairytales either the mom dies or you are stuck with a nasty step mother that locks you up or tries to kill you? Well not in this fairy tale and not this princess.
Jody Smith is a first-time author and longtime believer in fairytales. A former interior designer and store owner, this now present mama, dreamer and explorer is telling stories just outside of Mpls, MN. She loves watching her two charismatic girls use their imagination, grit, smarts and whimsy to navigate this world. It inspired her to write a book for all the princesses who are capable of saving themselves and for all the mindful mothers who revel in raising strong daughters.

Language and the Power of Global Awareness Oct 17, 2018
    Show notes

Being multilingual can make a world of difference at any age. From understanding games on the playground, to navigating a crowded airport and communicating in the global workforce.
Learning a foreign language has been linked to higher test scores, better executive functioning and overall advances in IQ. It’s a resume builder, but more importantly, a confidence booster.
Caryn Antonini ’s mission is to see that our future generations become multilingual and
globally aware. Caryn began speaking foreign languages from a young age and has always been
fascinated with language acquisition and other cultures and customs. Her
passion led her to the Georgetown University School of Languages and
Linguistics where she graduated with high honors. It was there
that she cultivated her understanding of how children learn languages and its connection
to their cognitive development. When Caryn had her own child and wanted to
teach him foreign languages at a young age, she found nothing on the market
that put into practice what she had learned. That inspired Caryn to embark on
developing a comprehensive program, the end result being the award-winning,
    innovative Early Lingo Learning System.
Caryn works with underprivileged schools in the United States, and In
2013 she partnered with a private trust to bring the Early Lingo English Language
Learning Initiative to Fiji and is working with organizations in the South Pacific to
bring the English language to school centers in the region. She has recently
partnered with independent schools along the East Coast who use the Early
Lingo Language Learning Apps. Early Lingo also works with various foundations
that serve to improve early childhood education for disadvantaged children.
On a global scale, Caryn has created The Young Global Citizens Campaign,
which educates children on how to become empathetic, responsible and
productive members of society in our increasingly interconnected world.
Caryn speaks 5 languages, is a member of the World Forum Foundation, sits on
the Advisory Board of Global Chamber and is a Global Citizen Resource Group
Chair at a CT independent school. She resides in the greater New York area with
    her family.
