    Rob's Soapbox - America Is Not A Racist Country May 03, 2021
    Show notes

A massive Cultural war erupted last week, yet again, on the topic of race, all because someone of prominence had the audacity to declare that America is not a racist country.

There are a few different ways to analyze this; the first being technically.

A country is simply a land mass defined as a nation with its own government, occupying a particular territory. The people within that country are capable of doing racist things and even supporting and enacting racist policies, but unless there is 100% agreement and compliance on those programs, it is simply inaccurate and patently unfair to assert that a nation is racist. And certainly, all indications are that Americans, overwhelmingly want to see, as our founding documents demand, all Americans treated equally. The debate centers on the extent to which systems within the country — business, government, law enforcement — reflect biases that disadvantage non-Whites. That’s not the same as the country itself being racist, a position that it seems safe to assume most Americans wouldn’t agree with.

Secondly, we must once again, as is far too often the case, remind Americans to stop hating America and casting it as the worst at everything ever. This national self-loathing is a cancer that will destroy us. While nearly impossible to properly calculate or quantify, the level of racism in America is by far no means vastly higher than throughout the world. Anecdotally, we know that European countries continue to tolerate banana peels and monkey chants directed at black soccer players. In terms of data and research, America shines like a beacon, yet that never seems to be reported. A 2019 study on racial discrimination in hiring showed that “France has the highest discrimination rates, followed by Sweden,” and the study found “smaller differences among Great Britain, Canada, Belgium, the Netherlands, Norway, the United States, and Germany.” Meanwhile, the World Values Survey, which has been measuring global attitudes and opinions for decades, asked respondents in more than 80 different countries to identify kinds of people they would not want as neighbors. Some respondents, picking from a list, chose "people of a different race." The more frequently that people in a given country say they don't want neighbors from other races, the researchers reasoned, the less racially tolerant you could call that society. Whether you agree with their methodology or not, the United States had the lowest rate of people saying they wouldn’t want to live near people of a different race, to the tune of less than 5%. Meanwhile, almost all of Europe and India were closer to 50%.

    https://www.nbcnews.com/news/world/soccer-spotlight-europe-grapples-racism-field-n992911

    https://sociologicalscience.com/articles-v6-18-467/

    https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/worldviews/wp/2013/05/15/a-fascinating-map-of-the-worlds-most-and-least-racially-tolerant-countries/

Which brings us to the third and final technicality we must acknowledge before addressing the statement “America is not a racist country.” Bigotry is a human condition that lives in all of us. Racism is a form of bigotry, although not all bigotry is racist. This is instructive, informative and helpful in an empathetic way if we are to ever move this conversation forward. All of us, every single one, is a bigot, defined as: “A person who is unreasonably prejudiced against or antagonistic towards a person on the basis of their membership of a particular group.” Personally, I am a bigot towards obese people, immediately judging them as being lazy and hating themselves. Also, fundamentally “wear it on their sleeve,” religious people; the kind who can’t form one sentence without preaching their gospel to you. And, while not quite the same as bigotry, I also cannot stand people with low self-confidence (this doesn’t quite qualify because it’s more of a personality trait that you can’t identify merely by the color of someone’s skin or the size of their ass but you get the point).

Specific to race, America (and the world, but we already covered that) is filled with racists. In fact, I’d go so far as to say that if you’re acknowledging that racism goes in all directions and almost all of us can and have been victims of it, then I’d be willing to dispute the notion that America is not a racist country. As a white man, I’ve been targeted and attacked for the color of my skin by black men on more than one occasion, prominently so since I started dating my African American wife 6 years ago. Christina has dealt with various forms of attacks from other black people because she’s with a white man. That’s still racist, even if it involves people of the same skin color. Just a couple weeks ago, an Asian man intentionally set out to rape a woman solely because she was white, as retribution for the rise in anti-Asian sentiment over the last year. The tension between Hispanics and African Americans is well known and historically long. Jokes about Asian drivers, Black People not working, Hispanics being lazy, and Jews being cheap have been tolerated and celebrated since the beginning of time. Using a limp wrist or lisp to indicate the presence of homosexuality is still common, as is all forms of intolerance of the LGBTQ community…so yeah, if that’s what we’re talking about, I’d rephrase it to “America like the rest of the world, is a nation filled with bigots.” https://www.yahoo.com/news/man-accused-attempting-sexually-assault-185708607.html

But that’s not what we’re talking about. Right now, in 2021, America being racist is entirely about the oppression of minorities by white people.

Most Americans are in agreement about the existence of racism and racial discrimination at the individual level. We all know that there are people out there who view people of other races as inferior, and most of us disdain the people who hold those views. Thus, America is not a racist country and saying so shouldn’t be controversial. But, of course, in 2021, everything is controversial and divisive.

Enter Senator Tim Scott of South Carolina, the only Black Republican Senator, and an ardent supporter of police, who has also spoken openly of being profiled and mistreated by law enforcement his entire life. While being an elected senator he was once questioned by Capital Police as to whether or not his credentials were real because he “didn’t look like a senator,” and yet Scott knows the importance of law enforcement; and law enforcement reform as it relates to race.

Last week, in the Republican response to Joe Biden’s address to congress, Scott said "Hear me clearly, America is not a racist country.” For the next 13 hours, the hashtag trended #uncleTim, a play on words referencing the revolting phrase “Uncle Tom,” to mean: “a black man considered to be excessively obedient or servile to white people.” Scott had the impudence to assert that America wasn’t racist and Americans responded by being racist.

Scott also said, “Today, kids are being taught that the color of their skin defines them again. And if you look a certain way, they're an oppressor,” he said. “From colleges, to corporations, to our culture, people are making money and gaining power by pretending we haven't made any progress at all…It's backwards to fight discrimination with different types of discrimination. And it's wrong to try to use our painful past to dishonestly shut down debates in the present.”

He's 100% correct and the fact that his assertion was even debated for one second shows the depths of this mess we’re in that is quite literally tearing us apart.

To her credit, Vice-President Kamala Harris, who is half black, said the next day that “no, I don't think America is a racist country, but we also do have to speak the truth about the history of racism in our country and its existence today," There is an indisputable gap between white people and Black and Latino people when it comes to life expectancy, education, and wealth. It is legitimate for us all of us to explore why that is so, and what role all of us play…including the Black and Latino communities themselves. It’s as wrong of white people to stupidly say “that’s just because they’re dumb and lazy,” and it is of African-Americans and Hispanics to say “it’s all white peoples’ fault.” https://www.usatoday.com/story/news/politics/2021/04/29/sen-tim-scott-says-america-isnt-racist-data-suggests-otherwise/4887356001/

    https://www.washingtonpost.com/politics/2021/04/29/what-back-and-forth-over-america-being-racist-country-is-actually-about/

To his credit, President Joe Biden in an interview Thursday added, “I don’t think America’s racist, but I think the overhang from all of the Jim Crow (laws), and before that slavery, have had a cost, and we have to deal with it… I don’t think the American people are racist but I think after 400 years, African Americans have been left in a position where they’re so far behind the eight ball in terms of education, health, in terms of opportunity.” https://www.ajc.com/news/nation-world/biden-i-dont-think-the-american-people-are-racist-but/DRK3F6Q2JBGC5B4H2IJBXENTTI/

He's right, his vice-president is right, and so is Senator Scott. All of them are right…and insisting, yet again, that only one side has the moral high ground or authority on this subject will be what dooms us all. People don’t like harsh truths, but that’s a part of life; at least it used to be and needs to be again. Just as I respond every time we have a mass shooting in America and everyone starts screaming about gun control by pointing out we will never stop senseless and inexplicable murders, I respond similarly here. We should do reasonable things to make heinous incidents of mass shootings as rare as possible…and nothing more.

Here's the harsh truth; there will NEVER be a day when my wife and I can leave our home and know, with 100% certainty that we won’t be targeted for the color of our skin; either hers or mine. As it is now, those incidents are rare, but memorable and scarring. And we accept this as a fact of loving one another, and realize that we will never truly escape the rare but painful incidents we will have to endure as a result of loving one another. As a nation, we should absolutely do everything we can to ensure fair hiring practices, reform the racial inequity that is undeniable within our justice system, and give law enforcement whatever tools and training it may need in various parts of the country to make sure they are treating all humans they contact with the exact same manner. And none of that will end racism, or hate, or bigotry. In fact, it may not even lessen it.

As we pursue reforms, we do need to heed Senator Scott’s words and ensure that we aren’t fighting discrimination by discriminating. Punishing white people for their pigment will do nothing to improve the lives of black people, and white people uttering moronic phrases like “what are you looking at me for? I don’t own no slaves,” does nothing to lower the temperature of the discussion and bring us closer together, which should be the goal. As a guy married to a black woman and, therefore, part of a black family, and as someone who’s cadre of friends is becoming more and more black, I can say that whether it has to do with the color of their skin, their culture, or simply how they were raised, the black people in my life have done nothing but enrich and improve it; and many of them have expressed the same thing to me vis a vis their lives. Imagine that; you actually get to know someone and you find out what they have to offer as a human…and it’s almost always something amazing, regardless of their color, creed, and I’ve learned, size and confidence.

Working to eradicate your bias is a life-long journey if you’re even willing to buy a ticket for the train, but it’s worth it. The energy and negativity we spend on hating someone solely for how they look or who they love is beyond toxic, it’s malignant and it will kill us all.

Rob's Soapbox - The Green New Reality Apr 25, 2021
    Show notes

A massive shift towards alternative and renewable energy is coming, and we all need to acknowledge that and shift the argument.

For decades, those who have opposed what we currently call “the Climate Movement,” have argued that the Earth is essentially a self-correcting system and that it will adapt to us. Other arguments contend that the Earth has been warming and cooling itself for millions of centuries and it’s simply a cycle that has nothing to do with who or what inhabits it. Some have tried pointing out that computer models are, by their very nature, biased by the data and assumptions that humans choose to enter into them, and still others have tried to be flippant with one-liners like “we can’t even predict tomorrow’s weather correctly, and yet we claim to know what the climate of the Earth will be in 50 years!” https://opr.ca.gov/facts/common-denier-arguments.html

“Climate Deniers,” as we now condescendingly call them, have also tried to point out that almost every single dire prophecy that has been predicted about the impending doom of the planet has never come to pass:

    • In 1970, and for the next 15 years, scientists predicted an ice age by the 21st century.
    • In the late 80’s, it shifted to dire warnings about warming, including New York City being underwater by 2019.
    • In 2002, we were told that as a result of human behavior, there would be global famine within ten years.
    • In 2008, NASA said the Arctic would be ice-free by 2018.
    • In that same year, not to be outdone, Former Vice-President Al Gore told us that the Arctic would be ice-free by 2013.
    • 2013 hit, and the Arctic was still quite icy and scientists announced that methane would eliminate the Arctic in just 2 years. The US Navy said 3 years.
    • In 2009, Prince Charles foretold that the planet would be destroyed by 2017.

    https://realclimatescience.com/

All of those predictions and dozens more have obviously been wrong, and every time they are, we are simply told something more dire will be happening at another arbitrary date.

However, it is time for the Climate Deniers to admit that they have lost the argument. Public sentiment is, and has been, overwhelming for two decades, and continues to rise with each new birth. Americans and the world believe that humans are destroying the planet, and that we must move away from fossil fuels and into alternative energy; yes, the sun, and the wind. https://www.pewresearch.org/science/2020/06/23/two-thirds-of-americans-think-government-should-do-more-on-climate/

And it isn’t governments that will be making the shift happen. In the wake of President Biden’s announcement last week that he wants to reduce America’s emissions by more than 50% in less than a decade, everyone’s hair caught on fire and people started screaming about the “Green New Deal,” and government overreach putting people out of work and ending entire industries; all over junk science!

Screaming and yelling about the government vis a vis Climate Change is like blaming racism on the presence of schools being named after founding fathers who owned slaves. Both are a total waste of time and energy, and do nothing to confront the actual issue.

Industries and corporations across the country are shifting their entire business models towards alternative energy because their research has confirmed that the polls on climate change are more than accurate, and ultimately, businesses exist solely to make profit by giving people what they want. Exxon-Mobil, realizing they’re on the endangered species list is shifting towards renewable energy and developing technology to remove carbon from the air, Google has invested $2 billion into solar and wind, and In Fact, more than 80 percent of the world’s top 500 companies have voluntarily began auditing and announcing their environmental impact numbers in an effort to stay in the good graces of not their country’s governments, but their country’s citizens (i.e., customers). https://theonebrief.com/why-environmental-sustainability-is-becoming-big-for-business-2/

No less than General Motors, the current and reigning gold standard amongst American vehicle manufacturers has already said that it would phase out petroleum-powered cars and trucks and sell only vehicles that have zero tailpipe emissions by 2035. In less than 15 years, my Corvette will be both a collector’s item, and a relic!

The current leader of the pack, who is proving that this move is inevitable is Tesla. One specific complaint of those who are resistant to the climate movement focuses on electric cars. People argue two main points:

    • If they run on electricity, we’ll need to make more of it, and we can only do that with more coal fired plants which will defeat the purpose.
    • Electric cars are a useless inconvenience unless and until there are as many charging stations in America as there currently are gas stations.

Tesla is working on answering both of those in one fell swoop by developing what will ultimately be cars that are essentially built out of solar panels. In other words, the body of your car will also be your fuel source thanks to the sun (and yes solar does still work on cloudy days, dimwit, not to mention we already have the technology to store solar power collected on long sunny days for use later in both the evening and darker, dreary winter months). https://electrek.co/2021/01/19/tesla-structural-battery-pack-first-picture/

All of this, by the way, is as it should be. If companies are the ones leading the climate change movement it will be done leaner, meaner, faster, and better than anything any government could even imagine, let alone implement, for companies will do it all with only one goal in mind; making money by pleasing their customers. In other words, when Tesla eventually rolls out their solar panel car, it won’t be ugly, it will be affordable, and it will be what people want to drive.

So, climate deniers need to stop screaming about denying the science, for it is accepted as settled law and the change is nigh. Instead, it is time to focus attention on the ways in which we will all make this shift, rather than standing with hands on hips, pouty face on maximum and uttering, “no, I don’t wanna.” As many of our parents used to say in the face of such childishness, “too bad, you’re gonna, so put on your big boy pants and let’s go.”

Such outlandish and stupid proposals as are found in the actual proposed “Green New Deal,” like eliminating air planes and cows are non-starters. That 14 page proposal literally reads like a 3rd grader wrote it. It’s adorable at best.

Rather than allowing ourselves to be told that there’s only one way to do this, it is time to accept that we’re doing it, and then insist that it be done wisely, and in a way that causes as little pain as possible to the fewest number of people and professions. If companies want to pursue ways to create beef in a laboratory, great, go for it; but we’re not going to simultaneously eliminate farmers and ranchers. If we can figure out how to get more out of wind and solar, then by all means, pursue that, but let’s also put the same time and effort into figuring out how to address issues of nuclear waste so that we can start to once again build nuclear power plants, and don’t tell me that it can’t be done…if we can successfully figure out how to harness a breeze into something that powers more than a sailboat, then we can jolly-well-good figure out how to eliminate and/or make safe the byproduct of nuclear energy.

Those are just a couple small examples from a much longer list of common sense that needs to be injected into the Climate Change discussion, and since this IS happening, it’s going to take ALL of us to make sure it happens correctly.

With it said and acknowledged that this is the direction we’re headed, let’s some of us remember that all of it is, of course, a colossal waste of everything from time to money and, ironically, energy. We are, of course, arrogantly trying to save a planet that doesn’t need saving. Only humans could be so conceited as to think that we could cure something that we claim is sick when we can’t even explain or actually prove how exactly it got here.

I always think of two works of art that perfectly, beautifully, and skillfully sum up the lunacy that is this movement. One is comedian George Carlin’s seven-minute diatribe from almost 30 years ago that, to this day, is spot-on perfect in every way possible. Do yourself a favor and watch it, even if you’ve already seen it as it is irrefutable in its’ logic: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BB0aFPXr4n4

Or, if you’d rather read it, here’s the transcript: https://scrapsfromtheloft.com/2019/08/22/george-carlin-saving-planet-transcript/

Some might go as far as to claim that Carlin was inspired by a little book called “Jurassic Park,” (yes, it was a book first), which was written only two years before Carlin’s brilliant sketch. My favorite passage of not only that novel, but one of my favorites of all time, also brilliantly explains how misguided and self-important we are:

“You think man can destroy the planet? What intoxicating vanity. Let me tell you about our planet. Earth is four-and-a-half-billion-years-old. There's been life on it for nearly that long, 3.8 billion years. Bacteria first; later the first multicellular life, then the first complex creatures in the sea, on the land. Then finally the great sweeping ages of animals, the amphibians, the dinosaurs, at last the mammals, each one enduring millions on millions of years, great dynasties of creatures rising, flourishing, dying away -- all this against a background of continuous and violent upheaval. Mountain ranges thrust up, eroded away, cometary impacts, volcano eruptions, oceans rising and falling, whole continents moving, an endless, constant, violent change, colliding, buckling to make mountains over millions of years. Earth has survived everything in its time. It will certainly survive us. If all the nuclear weapons in the world went off at once and all the plants, all the animals died and the earth was sizzling hot for a hundred thousand years, life would survive, somewhere: under the soil, frozen in Arctic ice. Sooner or later, when the planet was no longer inhospitable, life would spread again. The evolutionary process would begin again. It might take a few billion years for life to regain its present variety. Of course, it would be very different from what it is now, but the earth would survive our folly, only we would not. If the ozone layer gets thinner, ultraviolet radiation sears the earth, so what? Ultraviolet radiation is good for life. It's powerful energy. It promotes mutation, change. Many forms of life will thrive with more UV radiation. Many others will die out. Do you think this is the first time that's happened? Think about oxygen. Necessary for life now, but oxygen is actually a metabolic poison, a corrosive glass, like fluorine. When oxygen was first produced as a waste product by certain plant cells some three billion years ago, it created a crisis for all other life on earth. Those plants were polluting the environment, exhaling a lethal gas. Earth eventually had an atmosphere incompatible with life. Nevertheless, life on earth took care of itself. In the thinking of the human being a hundred years is a long time. A hundred years ago we didn't have cars, airplanes, computers or vaccines. It was a whole different world, but to the earth, a hundred years is nothing. A million years is nothing. This planet lives and breathes on a much vaster scale. We can't imagine its slow and powerful rhythms, and we haven't got the humility to try. We've been residents here for the blink of an eye. If we're gone tomorrow, the earth will not miss us.”

    Show notes

    More Ramblings:

    • In the wake of multiple mass shootings (defined as three or more people shot in one incident) the cries for gun control have begun once again. Here’s the problem; universal background checks are common sense to almost all Americans, including gun owners. No one actually wants a known felon, illegal citizen or mental defect to be able to purchase a gun…however, none of the recent mass shootings would have been prevented by universal background checks. In other words, in the wake of human devastation, we propose solutions that wouldn’t have prevented the incidents…thus, when the mass shootings continue after we enact universal background checks, the cries will be “we need to do more!” This is what’s defining the strident and ardent objections to any form of gun control in this nation. Unless and until the argument becomes a conversation, no progress will be made

    • If I had a child, the one job I would tell them not to pursue is being a cop. Read into that what you will.

    • More than 90 per cent of Americans now think that marijuana should be legal in some form…can we please end this debate and move on to serious issues? Or do we need to placate the 10% who want to scream about “gateway drug,” and other idiocies? The same people, by type, who would argue otherwise for personal responsibility and freedom of choice vis a vis what people put in their bodies #vaccine https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-9484125/Newly-two-three-Americans-legalization-marijuana-survey-finds.html

    • Wasn’t it about 3 weeks ago the CDC director had a feeling of “impending doom,” regarding Covid? And yet America (other than Michigan) is soaring into recovery and wellness, despite what the media and fear porn mongers tell you. Huh…

    • Speaking of Michigan, can you believe that it’s almost May of 2021 and that state is talking about completely locking down again because of a surge? Are we still doing this? Of course we are! Michigan governor Gretchen Whitmer actually said out loud that “this virus can be contained by the simple act of wearing a mask.” HUH???!!! Are we still seriously making this argument after a year of provable data that shows otherwise? Jesus Jumped Up Christ!!! https://www.nbcnews.com/meet-the-press/video/full-whitmer-interview-i-m-working-with-a-smaller-set-of-tools-to-fight-covid-110408773937

    • Hypocrisy on display: Former President Trump announced that all U.S. troops would leave Afghanistan on May 1st, 2021. Current President Biden pushed that to the symbolic date of 9/11/21…and suddenly, Republicans who loudly supported Trump’s pronouncement condemn Biden for being reckless and irresponsible. News flash: America will endlessly be at war; it’s what we do. Right or wrong, that’s the truth.

    • Hypocrisy on display part deux: Tens of thousands of “migrants” continue to flood into America, untested for Covid, while half of America remains on various forms of “lockdown and shutdown” orders. Paging Dr Anthony Fauci…Dr. Fauci to the comment room to discuss super-spreader events please…

And speaking of Dr Fauci, we got this e-mail last week from a listener named Dennis:

    Rob,

I appreciate the fact that every time Dawn asserts Fauci is just power hungry and that’s why he keeps holding on to restrictions that you offer other alternatives like it could be that he’s genuinely terrified and/or he spent most of his life being a dorky kid and was probably never cool or well liked and now he is this revered guy or whatever…but while it’s always great that you offer other possibilities, what actually is YOUR opinion? Which is it?

Well, for starters, I actually dismiss the last one…it’s funny and stereotypical, but as with most stereotypes, there’s no indication it’s true. He was the captain of his high school basketball team, he’s a huge baseball fan, and all indications are that he was pretty popular and he’s always been very well liked.

    Therefore, I think it’s a hybrid of the other two as follows;

I think it’s mostly the middle one…remember this guy Fauci has been preparing for this his entire life. He’s had this job since Ronald Reagan was president, more than 37 years, and the entire time his job has been to be ready for the worst possible virus related scenario he can imagine. He has even suggested as much in multiple interviews prior to 2020.

Think about normal humans who have gone through trauma…like a car crash and how they suddenly become scared to death that everyone they love is going to get in one…Imagine your kid went missing for a day and turned out fine…you had an entire day to think the worst possible things, how over-protective would you be afterwards?

His entire adult life he’s been told his kid was missing or was going to be only his kid is a global pandemic, so when it hit, like an over-protective parent, he over-reacted and he still is.

The hybrid part is that I don’t think he’s power hungry…I think he’s an elitist who believes that people are too stupid to know what he does and that is that this virus is the most deadliest thing ever and only he and people like him understand that and how we can all stay safe and so it’s their job to save us, even though actual science, in no way, supports that. 560,000 Americans have died of Covid…and yet, 655,000 die every year of heart disease; what’s next? Shutting down all steakhouses for 6 months every year to force Americans to not consume too much red meat and cholesterol…wait…don’t answer that; as the last year has shown us, never ask what’s next. The universe will answer and it will be awful…

    Rob's Soapbox - I'm Not A Vaxhole Apr 11, 2021
    Show notes

A few weeks ago, Urban Dictionary added the word “Vaxhole,” defined as follows: “One who has been fully vaccinated for the COVID-19 virus and brags about it.”

    https://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=vaxhole

To be clear, I couldn’t care less if you get the vaccine or not. If you have concerns about possible side effects, or the speed at which with this vaccine was developed and made available, I legitimately respect and will defend that. Additionally, if you have moral objections to at least two of them being developed using aborted fetal cells, I honor your convictions. Even if you’re convinced that getting the vaccine implants some sort of microchip tracking device that allows the government to do whatever it is that you’re convinced they do, I stand by it being your body and your choice. You are not your brother’s keeper and you have absolutely no moral, legal, ethical, or societal obligation to inject something into your body to protect the rest of us. Period.

All I ask in return is: can you please show me the same respect? I have no intention of “bragging” about being vaccinated, nor will I be posting my vaccination card online nor appearing in any PSA’s encouraging people to do so. If I was asked to be a spokesperson for getting vaccinated, I would refuse. People who begin conversations with “did you get the shot,” nauseate me. There is absolutely nothing noble, brave, or virtuous about getting the vaccine, despite what doctors, politicians, your friends and family, or the media tell you.

However, there’s also nothing wrong with getting it, either.

The vaccine seems to be the new mask. Although this time, people seem even angrier if you don’t align with their point of view. As my view evolved over the last few weeks, the vile, loathsome, threatening, and downright rageful emails increased exponentially, as if I had not only betrayed the country, but did so while mowing down peoples’ families. This is where the disconnect comes in.

I understood, given the propaganda surrounding masks, why people were angry at those of us who refused to wear them. After all, we were allegedly putting other people at risk by not covering our faces. As stupid as that thinking is and remains, it was and is the common belief amongst most Americans.

Who in the hell are my wife and I hurting, harming, or threatening by getting the shot? Quite literally, the answer is…no one! Yet the vitriol is real.

Further complicating my ability to understands peoples’ hostility is the fact that we didn’t make the decision by being “coerced” by the government or health officials, which I’ve made clear time and time again. My wife and I couldn’t care less about getting Covid, and have every reason to believe we’ve already had it (though we never were tested despite knowingly being exposed to people who had twice in 2020). There’s one very simple reason we went ahead and got the shot; so that we’re one step closer to resuming life as we like to live it. Period.

Countless countries have already publicly announced that travel to their nations will be forbidden without proof of vaccination, and while, like with everything else Covid-related, political lines are being drawn over “vaccine passports,” it is clear that they will be necessary at various places in America for the foreseeable future; in fact, they already are required if you want to attend any sort of event in New York, one of our favorite places to visit. Hawaii has announced that they will implement a “vaccination required” policy later this year, and Christina and I try to visit there at least once every year. More importantly, businesses are struggling with ways to attract the greatest number of people back to their establishments, and with the majority of Americans being terrified of Covid, the ability to say “everyone around you in this place is safe,” is the quickest way for most companies to begin generating recovery revenue. In fact, a bar in Denver announced this week that they now require proof of vaccination if you want to drink inside. It has begun.

    https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-9453873/Denver-bar-asking-people-proof-COVID-19-vaccine.html

    https://www.travelweekly.com/Hawaii-Travel/Insights/Hawaii-eyes-summer-rollout-of-a-vaccine-passport

    https://www.cntraveller.com/article/covid-vaccine-travel

Additionally, while the CDC is taking an agonizingly long time to publicly acknowledge common sense, it’s getting closer by the week. Their totally meaningless “guidance” has progressed as follows:

    • If you’ve been vaccinated, nothing changes, stay home
    • If you’ve been vaccinated, you may visit with other vaccinated people while wearing masks, but not unvaccinated people
    • If you’ve been vaccinated, you may visit with other vaccinated people and not wear masks.
    • If you’ve been vaccinated, you may visit with anyone and not wear a mask, but still must wear one in public. https://www.cdc.gov/coronavirus/2019-ncov/vaccines/fully-vaccinated-guidance.html

While none of that makes any sense, what actually has the last 13 months? Just days ago, Washoe County in Nevada announced that once 75% of its’ total population has been vaccinated, everything goes back to normal…EXCEPT the mask mandate will remain in place. Total lunacy. https://www.kolotv.com/app/2021/04/07/washoe-co-reopening-plan-calls-for-eased-covid-19-restrictions/

The good news is that the CDC is moving in the proper direction of making it official that once vaccinated, a mask is no longer “necessary.” Once they do, it will greenlight businesses (and hopefully states and counties) to alter their policies appropriately. While I have rarely covered my face in the last year, there are things you simply can’t do without one, most notably, get on a plane, or enjoy a casino in Las Vegas.

And so, with all of that so obvious to Christina and me, we discussed the vaccine and deduced the following:

    • We put things in our body all of the time that come with endless possible side-effects.
    • Even after decades of various products being tested, approved, and then on the market, we suddenly find out new side effects that they cause. In other words, in our opinion, being concerned about this vaccine being “rushed,” is irrational both in the near and long term
    • Known immediate side effects are extraordinarily rare and not above those of other vaccines.

In the end, we decided to, as we said “just get the damn shot.” Which, by the way, was a total nothing burger…not even the dreaded “sore arm,” that seemingly EVERYONE experiences. We drank lots of water beforehand, iced our arms immediately after and took some ibuprofen…and we never felt a thing. The only unpleasant part is when you actually feel the poison…err…vaccine entering your arm. It seems to simultaneously burn and sting for ½ second. Big whoop. So now we just wait for our third arm to grow or Bill Gates to show up at our door.

So, what’s the problem? Why the hate, anger, and rage directed at us? If people were merely “disappointed,” that after a year of raging against everything Covid-related, I did what I’ve always done and made a decision based entirely on facts, logic, and reason, I could at least understand that, despite the irrationality of it. This is different; it’s palpable fury that is never accompanied by any sort of thought-based objections. And that’s your homework for the week…explain it to me in words not grunts and exclamation points. Why are you so angry at people choosing, of their own volition to get a vaccination that you are not being forced to get? Why in the world do you care at all and why direct whatever the rage is this causes you at the people who get the shot and never say another word about it? I’ll be here waiting…

Episode 155 - RAD Prodcast - Interview with Shawheen Khorshidian Apr 01, 2021
    Show notes

Thank you for tuning in to the RAD Prodcast, Episode 155! Next week is Spring Break, and while you’ll be without a fresh episode of the Prodcast for another week, I wanted to leave off on a positive, uplifting note in this episode.

If you’ve been following along with the Prodcast in 2021, you’re aware of the life changes that I have been going through. While divorce, separation and mindfulness of mental health have been a major focus, it has created an open forum of truth. Your truth. My truth. Being able to live in truth has granted access to some amazing connections, encounters and new friendships to occur (as well as fostering relationships with old friends). What’s more is that my situation seems to be resonating with so many people who are either going through similar circumstances or have gone through them in the past. I’m getting all of your messages and emails, and I am eternally grateful for the outpouring of love and support. You all play a role in the healing I am going through now. I wouldn’t want it any other way.

It is rare when you meet someone whom you hit it off, right away. Almost like you have known this person in a past life. This very thing happened to me recently, and the individual and the chance meeting at a dog park ended up being instrumental in reminding me that we are all worthy of friendship with good people who want nothing more than to share their energy with you. This individual is a graphic artist, co-host of a brand new podcast centered around astrology, spiritual pioneer, an all around beautiful soul, and owner of an adorable Basenji puppy named BB. Introducing a perfect stranger, Shawheen Khorshidian.

If this pandemic has taught me one thing, it is that you are not immune to losing your social skills due to lack of human interaction. I decided to subject Shawheen to being a guest on the Prodcast as part of our first conversation after meeting at a dog park weeks ago. Witness how graceful Shawheen is as I struggle to maintain focus due to my awkwardness.

    Rob's Soapbox - I Got Nothin' Mar 28, 2021
    Show notes

It’s 2pm Sunday afternoon as I start this and I have no idea what to write…it’s not writer’s block as much as it is mental mush…A linear, coherent thought is nowhere in my future today so instead of composing an actual essay, I’m going to bombard you with random crap running through my brain as follows:

    - Saturday Night Live has truly become one of the worst shows on television. The only reason I still watch it is so that I can publicly complain about how awful it has become.

    - Am I the only one completely done with Dr. Fauci and his proclamations of what we’ll be “allowed” to do in the months ahead? Today he teased the possibility of baseball games having fans…hey asshole, that’s already a thing.

    - If I see one more headline about how spring breakers are going to be the cause of a fourth wave of Covid in America while ignoring tens of thousands of Latin American “migrants” crossing the border I’m going to puke.

    - So, apparently the San Francisco 49ers are done with Quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo; as of this writing he’s still a member of the team but the Niners traded up for the draft and have publicly acknowledged they’re going after a quarterback. This should be interesting…do they spend the 2021 season allowing Jimmy G, as a clearly lame duck QB, to lead the team and apply for his next job? Or do they throw a college kid behind center and hope the rest of the talent on that team can lead them back to the super bowl? And what if Jimmy G gets them a championship? Ponder on your own time…

    - Does anyone even remember the TV show “Hogan’s Heroes?” It was an “old” show when I was a kid but I’ve been re-watching it lately and it’s not only hysterical but fascinating from a historical perspective. The fact that World War II was won largely thanks to an underground network of allied soldiers willfully being imprisoned and supplying endless intelligence to the cause is one that seems so antiquated in today’s selfish age that it’s hard to fathom.

    - George Carlin was the greatest stand-up comedian of all-time. That is all

    - Did you see Brandon’s Instagram post on Saturday? (@not_strangled_bacon)…The one of just him with his sunglasses on and his mumbo-jumbo message? That’s the Brandon I love; he’s back! He looks amazing and is rediscovering himself in ways that make me so happy.

    - My wife, Christina, and I, went out to dinner with friends Friday night at a super-spreader restaurant that we love and I discussed the fact that, given the choice, I prefer the company of black people. Now, it so happens I was the only white person at the table, but as I shared with my fellow diners, in my experience, black people are the most emotionally authentic people I have ever encountered, as a rule. They let you know how they feel instantly, and without worry or concern of judgment; which is ironic considering their history within this nation. What’s troubling to me is that so much of what I just wrote is dripping in modern day racism. Can you imagine if I had said that I hate being around black people? Or what if someone said they only like being with white people? Cancel culture bring it on…we aren’t allowed to speak our truths and that’s going to be the end of us.

    - Can everyone stop asking why an American “needs” so many guns? To be candid, the answer is that I don’t have any God damned idea why anyone needs more than a couple hand guns for personal protection. Outside of hunting rifles and gun collectors the idea of having many guns makes absolutely no sense to me. If we find ourselves in a situation that my wife, a 12-year army veteran who served in Afghanistan, my dogs, and I, along with the very few guns we have can’t defend ourselves, than we’ve arrived in a world I no longer want to live in. But that’s me…leave everyone alone for God’s sake. No, I can’t tell you why anyone should feel that they need to own a dozen or more guns for personal protection but I don’t have to answer that question and you shouldn’t be asking it.

    - Yes, Asian-American hate crimes are on the rise…no, there is absolutely no evidence at all, whatsoever that the Atlanta massacre had anything to do with race. Stop it immediately.

    - News from the future…Jesus will not be showing up this Sunday.

    - You may not be paying attention to the level of knowing that the George Floyd murder trial is underway. Here’s another prediction…Derek Chauvin is not going to be found guilty of murder, and that means that no matter what he is or isn’t found guilty of, this country is going to burn…again. Get your plywood ready.

    - Deborah Birx…remember her? She was scarf-face standing next to Fauci for all of 2020…she made a colossal fool of herself this weekend by claiming that the overwhelming majority of American deaths from Covid could have been prevented if more states would have locked down tighter and sooner. That, of course, defies all logic and history and ignores the devastating effects of the lockdowns on other areas of our health, but hey, whatever you have to tell yourself to secure your legacy, good for you…you lying piece of trash.

    - Memo to Tucker Carlson of Fox News…not everything is an attack. Stop claiming that the ship stuck in the Suez Canal is some sort of terrorist or Chinese plot against America and Capitalism. Guess what? Sometimes shit just happens.

    - Did you see the video last week of President Biden tripping multiple times up the stairs to Air Force One? And then his meandering, sometimes senile press conference? I’m starting to hope that the conspiracy theories insisting he isn’t actually running the country are true.

    - I’ll end on a potentially positive note…I know that the last year has taught us, more than ever to not have hope. However, this Thursday, the universe may return to normal when one of the greatest characters in television history returns in the form of Elliot Stabler, formerly of Law and Order, SVU. That show went straight into the toilet when he left, but he’s back this week with his own show. Maybe, just maybe, we’ll have a bit of quality entertainment…if only for a brief while.

    Huh…I guess I did have a lot to say…
