    Rob's Soapbox - What Else? May 31, 2021
    Show notes

Let us start with this premise; we must acknowledge that almost everyone loves to reflect longingly on “better times;” it’s not just an “American thing,” it’s part of the human condition. We like to claim that times “before,” were far better than now. The “before” can be anything from before we, ourselves, were born, or simply a time earlier in our own personal lives.

Much of this comes from imagery and personal memories. Americans aware of their nations’ history often wax nostalgic about the 1950’s; this is almost always associated with pictures and stories we were told of the post-World War II high, the booming economy, and the nation as a whole having established itself as the world’s leader. Sounds great, doesn’t it? And it was…unless you were a woman or a person of color. Things weren’t so great for them, let alone anyone questioning their sexuality or even their gender.

Generation X-ers, (people of my age), tend to glamorize the 90’s, thanks to the fact that the economy was booming, most of us were in our 20’s, and, as we remember it, everything was just great! People got along, most were happy, and there was a fitness and health boom. Not to mention Seinfeld, Friends, the dawn of fast-paced action films like “Speed,” grunge, alternative, rock, pop and country music were all wildly popular! Everyone played Super-Nintendo, we all talked “around the water cooler,” and there was the promise of this fancy and exciting new thing called “the internet.” Meanwhile, we were ushering in the age of school shootings across America and slowly beginning to literally destroy the foundation of societal America by handing out participation trophies and launching the “self-esteem movement,” designed to make our children feel better about themselves by telling them that they were always correct and right and special.

My point is this; things are always crystal clear in our brain’s rear-view mirror because we’re able to self-edit and omit at will. Which is how many people today decry the biased media, as though it’s never existed before; completely ignoring the facts of the past and the reality of the present.

Forgiving the use of hyperbole, there was never an un-biased, fair, or bi-partisan media, writ large, in America. Walter Cronkite, AKA “The most trusted man in America,” was loudly and proudly “liberal,” by his own definition, yet we’re told was un-biased in his reporting, an almost unbelievable assertion, especially when you take the time to review many of his most famous moments. The “big 3,” news reporters of the 90’s, Peter Jennings, Tom Brokaw, and Dan Rather, were all leftists entrusted with telling Americans the news, when what they actually did was skew the facts and events to fit their political narrative. This, in fact, was the “justification,” for the rise of Rush Limbaugh and, later, Fox News…to balance the playing field by lying, omitting, and distorting the “news,” in the opposite direction of what had been previously considered to be factual.

The argument that there was a time when we were given facts by news reporters is infantile, naïve, nostalgic, and provably untrue if you desire to indulge yourself in the time to research the facts, as opposed to what you’ve been told, or what you have chosen to remember. Plus, it misses the point.

Prior to the turn of the century, even with Limbaugh exploding and Fox News emerging, there was an understanding and acceptance in America that has long since disappeared, much to our detriment. No matter our disagreements, many of them volatile and powerful, there is something we have completely lost unlike at no other time in our history, save the Civil War. We have lost our Americanism.

Tribalism is the state of being organized by, or advocating for, tribes or tribal lifestyles. Human evolution has primarily occurred in small groups, as opposed to people's cooperation in society as a whole, save one exception: America, prior to 2000. Don’t misunderstand; there’s always been what I call micro-tribalism in America, but as a nation we still rallied around the country as a whole. We were, at the core, Americans, which was defined as our ability to freely fight with one another, but always acknowledge that we were united as one nation. That notion was shattered in the presidential election of 2000, has never been repaired, and is worse than it’s ever been since 1861. There is quite literally NOTHING that unites us as a nation. A year ago I used this same analogy with a different name, but it’s no less true; if President Biden were assassinated tomorrow, there would be no national unity. Half the nation would mourn, the other would cheer and you know damn well the same is true had it been Trump. We’ve become a nation of tribalist cannibals; willing, even hoping, to eat our own in an effort to recreate the nation in our own image, while not even allowing the other opinions a voice. It’s the most un-American we’ve ever been.

Enter social media. Pause for vomit. Continue.

Social Media isn’t simply that; 53% of all Americans say that social media is their primary, if not only, news source. You read that correctly; more than half of this nation gets its’ “news,” from social media. Think of all the lunacy you see posted daily on Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, Tik Tok, and everything between, and then soak in the knowledge that 53% of people use that as news. https://letter.ly/how-many-people-get-their-news-from-social-media/

In fact, many tech conglomerates site that fact as the reason they had to become more “involved,” with the dissemination of “facts.” After all, if you are one of a handful of people who control and operate more than half of the nations’ access to information you have a “moral obligation,” to be mindful, don’t you? The answer of course, is hell no, but we don’t live in a sane society. It is neither big tech’s job, nor the government’s, to control, translate, meter, limit, or deny our access to not just information, but also each other’s thoughts. In the government’s case it would be unconstitutional, in the instance of 3 major corporations controlling 90% of all social media, it’s a blatant violation of American anti-trust laws. Either way, it’s wrong and reprehensible…and most notably, dangerous and dishonest. https://www.politico.com/news/2020/04/16/facebook-fake-news-coronavirus-190054

Enter the modern day Walter Cronkite; there isn’t one. Rather, there are many, fractured into our various tribes. Sean Hannity, Rachel Maddow, Tucker Carlson, Chris Cuomo, Mark Levin, and Anderson Cooper are all considered the modern day Cronkite by varying factions of about 10% of the nation. Meanwhile, The New York Times, Washington Post, Wall Street Journal, and Washington Examiner simply spend each day printing articles that completely contradict one another, thus cancelling out the truth. But hey, at least they’re all speaking and being heard or read.

Enter big tech; they took a decidedly different role in terms of weaponizing their bias and influence. Rather than deciding to simply slant every story to fit their narrative, for the past couple of years, big tech has taken to deletion; the active removal of opinions and, in many cases, news stories printed in legitimate (albeit biased) entities like the New York Post. Silencing what you view as the opposition is the mark of dictators, tyrants, cowards, and lunatics. It’s also a sign of both fear and malicious secrecy, meant to intentionally make sure people never find things out (or when they do, it’s far too late and/or irrelevant).

Sadly, there’s no way to bring this topic to an end without getting political, so allow me to take a moment to discuss the putrid state of such. Anyone who claims that the administration of Donald Trump was not the most overtly dishonest one in modern history is a delusional liar not to be taken seriously. And, for what it’s worth, about 140 days in, Biden is giving him a run for his money. (Remember…the America/Mexico border is closed…and there is no immigration crisis…say it five times in the mirror and Salma Hayek will show up behind you with a hook for a hand and disembowel you…which some of you might like, now that I think about it).

There…I said something bad about both sides, which, for some reason is required in today’s America in an attempt to show that you aren’t on one team or another. Why any of you align yourselves with either of these parties is beyond me and a topic for another column entirely.

With all of that said and established, the truth is that Big Tech is markedly liberal, and admittedly so. When they embarked on their mission to help feeble minded Americans have access to only the truth, they did so by assuming anything conservatives said was false. It was, and is, a childish and disgusting way to approach information: cover your ears, scream “LA LA LA LA LA” over and over and never let the person you disagree with be heard is not a way to run a platform designed to share both information and opinions. And yet, they’ve been doing it for two years.

For the last 15 months, if you had the audacity to suggest, assert, or question where and how Covid-19 started, you were labeled as a “conspiracy theorist,” and on social media your posts were tagged and often deleted for containing “false information.” After all, it was KNOWN that the virus began with a bat in a wet market, eaten by a human, and so the transmission began. Turns out, there’s always been pretty compelling evidence that the virus was created by humans in China, perhaps with the knowledge and consent (and maybe even money) of America, and escaped the laboratory. https://www.foxbusiness.com/media/coronavirus-origin-wuhan-lab-gop-report-facebook-fact-check

    https://www.foxnews.com/media/reporters-admit-dismissing-wuhan-lab-theory-republicans

To be completely candid, that story bores me to tears, and is not my point. No matter what the truth is, my life will be altered in no way at all, and nor will yours. We aren’t going to war with China, none of us are going to see financial reparations, and we certainly aren’t bringing back 600,000 dead Americans and 100,000 small businesses that were lost to our idiotic managing of the pandemic.

What doesn’t bore me is the canary in the coal mine. Everyone now acknowledges that it’s more than likely that something we were told was flatly untrue and not allowed to be said out loud, is now probably more than likely, true. Hmmmm…

Posts claiming that masks did nothing to stop the spread of Covid were also labeled and handled in an identical manner as the Wuhan Lab theory. Multiple studies saying such about masks were banned…in fact, as an experiment try posting the University of Louisville study that came out last week entitled “Masks didn’t slow Covid Spread,” and let me know if it’s allowed. After all, it’s a respected university that relied entirely on CDC data to come to its’ conclusion. That certainly SHOULD be something we all are allowed to see, debate and discuss.. https://townhall.com/tipsheet/spencerbrown/2021/05/26/new-study-refutes-fauci-efficacy-of-mask-mandates-n2589990

The governor of Florida had a press conference of his deleted from You Tube because on it were accredited and respected doctors and disease specialists explaining why Florida’s approach of “living with the virus,” was safe and effective. People who posted scientific studies showing that lockdowns did more harm than good, were similarly blocked and erased, as were those who questioned the 2020 presidential election results.

Which of those, if any, were actually all true? And/or at least worthy of discussion or debate. Well, certainly they were all worthy of discussion or debate in a free Republic such as the United States is designed to be and clearly has stopped being.

All of this demands the question: what else is knowingly and maliciously being kept from us to even consider, let alone discuss and think about amongst ourselves? We aren’t just being lied to overtly every day by Rachel Maddow on one side and Sean Hannity on the other, we’re also being shielded from access to things. As I’ve always said, a lie of omission is still a lie.

And in an odd, ironic, final twist, there’s one thing that isn’t being hidden from us at all, by anyone, on either side; which is unheard of. Everyone from Tucker Carlson to 60 Minutes, to all social media and mainstream news, along with talk radio are all brazenly talking about multiple and verifiable sightings and recordings of UFO’s by the American Military. One of the most covered up, whackadoodle topics of the past 50 years is suddenly mainstream, normal, fascinating, and acceptable for all sides to cover. It shouldn’t take a tin foil hate to make most Americans take pause and ask why, suddenly, are all sources of information spending inordinate amounts of time, with almost no political spin, on a subject that up until recently was considered fodder only for tabloids and kooks. And yet, none of us are doing that. I promise you that there’s a reason…and when we find out what it is, it will be far too late.

Rob's Soapbox - Father Time Is Losing His Touch May 23, 2021
    Show notes

When it comes to mortality, and specifically, the understanding that we all, eventually, must recognize our limitations, I’ve always said that the only true undefeated heavyweight champion is Father Time. He wins every time…he gets all of us. In other words, put bluntly; we all get old, we all decay, and we all die.

Although it seems as though lately, Father Time is slacking off.

Years ago, it became nouveau to exclaim that “50 is the new 40,” or whatever decade dissolving version suited the speaker. And certainly, it is undeniable that modern medicine, a better understanding of self-care, and a drive to stay relevant and active has motivated a large portion of our society to find ways to stay relevant, hip, and flourishing.

We’ve talked about this phenomenon for a while, and now, as the world rejoins normalcy, we see again the same trends we’ve been seeing for years; adults previously described as “middle-aged,” are going to, hanging out with, partying with, and sometimes dating (or marrying eh-hem) people half their age. And everyone is having a good time doing it. For the most part, the “older” women aren’t accused of “trying too hard,” and the men aren’t seen as creeps. In fact, dudes in their 20’s with mommy issues are discovering that women in their 40’s can be funny, fun, and sometimes hot as hell. Women in their 20’s who find their dads to be “adorable,” at best, are realizing that other men his same age are actually capable of more than just dad jokes, constantly bringing the room down with safety speeches, and unpleasant bodily noises.

Nowhere is this new-found delay in aging more on display than the sports world, especially now. Tom Brady just won his seventh Super Bowl in one of the most brutal games played at the age of 43; and plans to play to at least 45 (and probably longer). Mike Tyson is 54 years old and is back to boxing…and he isn’t just boxing, he looks menacing, fast, focused, and filled with precision. If you have a 3 at the beginning of your age, you have no business playing competitive tennis and yet Serena Williams won her sixth Wimbledon title at the age of 33, and is still winning at age 39! In fact, the tennis world is currently dominated by 30-year-olds, which is historically unheard of. Mere moments ago, 51-year-old Phil Mickelson became the oldest golfer in history to win a major tournament; and he didn’t just win it, he dominated it. And while it’s fun and easy to pick on golf, it is undeniably one of the most physically demanding and grueling activities which has destroyed more backs and knees than can be counted.

It used to be that when people tried to “hold on to their youth,” it was pathetic and sad to watch, but too many people are doing it too well now to let it go unnoticed.

Some of the most hip, relevant, and influential people are of the “age” that used to be relegated to those who were “on their way out.” It’s always been known that men, for example, hit the peak of their earning power between 45-55 years old, but they were also seen as the elder statesmen of whatever industry they were in; now, they ARE the industry that they’re in, and most seem to have no intention to quietly step aside, nor do they appear as though they need to.

Joe Rogan is 53, Elon Musk 49, Matthew McConaughey 51, Will Smith 52, and Andy Cohen is 52, and all of them (and so many more), regardless of what you personally may think of them, are at the top of their chosen fields and wield massive amounts of power and influence across various parts of our society.

Judy Sheindlin, AKA “Judge Judy,” is wildly popular amongst all age groups, still wicked smart, and just signed a new contract for a new show said to be worth hundreds of millions of dollars. 57-year-old Michelle Obama speaks and everyone other than hard-line Republicans (and racists) pays attention. I’m no fan of Gwyneth Paltrow, but at the age of 48, she and her goopiness remain wildly relevant to millions of people. Jennifer Aniston looks nowhere close to 52 years old and is beloved and influential to almost all.

And don’t use the tired and lazy argument that everyone I’ve mentioned by name is a celebrity…of course they are! This entire soapbox would make no sense if I referenced my 65-year-old friend Tony and my 52-year-old friend Ralph. And that’s the point…it’s simply false and pathetic to claim that only rich and famous people are defying age because they have trainers, nutritionists, and surgery at their disposal. 1995 called and wants its’ excuse back.

None of this is to assert that the always trend-setting under 40 crowd has lost its’ cache. Not at all; they just no longer own it in the way it was once demanded. There’s actually space for all of us at the table of hipness and for the first time in my (long) lifetime, the older seem more accepting of the younger, and the younger see more of a value to the older. This is what we call progress.

Certainly all of this could seem quite self-serving coming from a guy mere months from his 50th birthday and nowhere near in the same shape as fellow half-century celebrators Hugh Jackman, Dwayne Johnson, George Clooney, and Brad Pitt. Although, I do have a much hotter wife than all of them so there’s that.

People who truly know me know that none of this is about me, nor is it new. I have always hated people who use age, large or small, as an excuse or explanation for anything. I know plenty of people my age who are wildly immature and irresponsible, while simultaneously having to remind myself that some of the most impressive people in my life are so relatively young.

So, to summarize, screw you, father time. While none of us will ever be able to beat you, you aren’t as formidable a foe as you once were. Jerk.

Episode 3 - RAD pROBcast - Interview with Jammi from InkOffme May 21, 2021
    Show notes

Jammi from Inkoff.me helps me take a deep dive on what gives Barbara Walters sexual gratification, strange things she witnessed stuck inside of people during her years working the ER, and why her name is spelled wrong. Jammi also explains how she’s raised a teenage son who DOESN’T have a social media account and she even cries at one point! OH, and we also spend some time exploring the hypothesis that some people who go to prison might actually be human beings who genuinely want and deserve a helping hand at reforming themselves and rejoining society and how that is actually the driving force behind everything they do at Inkoff.me. It’s yet another reminder of the amazing family all of us in the RAD universe are and how blessed we are to be working together to live, laugh, love, and help one another.

    Rob's Soapbox - Un-Masking The Masked May 16, 2021
    Show notes

What a week…the liars, drama queens, look-at-me crowd, and control freaks were all exposed in less than 48 hours and it was a glorious sight to behold.

This is it…our chance…the time when the “silent majority,” that we’ve all been talking about so much, yet hearing from so little, gets to seize the moment, momentum and moral high ground and reclaim society.

After 15 months of being told to “follow the Fauci,” and having “SCIENCE,” screamed in our faces, the most pathetic amongst us now find themselves alone and abandoned by their saviors. The CDC and Heir Fauci announced in unison that vaccinated people may now resume 2019 life and it broke America…at least the America that’s been running things since March, 2020.

Those of us who have been wondering why, from the beginning, we didn’t tell the vulnerable and scared to just stay home while the rest of us kept the country running, have suddenly been given out figurative “get out of jail free card,” and it’s killing the timid, the scared, and the meek.

Suddenly, those of us who, from the beginning, said we need to live with virus, have the backing and power of the very lunatics and institutions who wrecked this country and tried to drive us into our homes to hide from a virus that the entire world could not hide from. We are not Australia, New Zealand, or a handful of other island and peninsula nations that were able to shut down and contain and control Covid-19…we’re what used to be the United States of America; we’re supposed to show the globe how to do things. Instead, we allowed fear-mongering nerds to tell us they knew best when they didn’t know anything. But now, they know what we know…and it is absolutely triggering those who want to continue to hide…hide their faces, hide inside, and hide from life.

I present to you Alison McCook…she has a B.S. in science with the emphasis on “B.S.” If you research her, what she actually is…is a guilty, privileged freelance “journalist” white girl who clearly hates herself, America, and anything remotely related to liberty, freedom, and personal responsibility. I encourage you to Google her name, read her articles, and puke at will. Or simply, allow me to present a recent article of hers, written after we were told that it’s time for America to unmask itself, with proper retorts included:

Headline: The CDC’s new mask rules promise freedom. But to me they mean fear.

    Retort: Jesus jumped up Christ…

Article: On Thursday, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) made a surprise announcement:

Retort: It wasn’t a surprise to anyone who actually knows, understands and follows science, especially since thousands of doctors and scientists were calling on the CDC to do exactly what they did.

Article: Anyone who is fully vaccinated can now stop masking and social distancing, including indoors.

Though many public health experts had said they thought we would need masks when indoors with strangers for at least another year, the nation’s health protection agency has declared that anyone who received the last dose of their COVID-19 vaccine at least two weeks ago can start living life the way they did before this god-awful thing began.

Retort: The God-awful thing in this dim-wits brain is the virus; to the rest of us, it’s the destruction of our country and, most notably, our children, which, she clearly gives two licks about, if that. Meanwhile, she exposes herself early on as a hypochondriac and drama-mama since an equal number of “health experts” have disagreed entirely with masks from the beginning, they just weren’t allowed to be heard by people like Ms. McCook…who now is looking for new experts.

Article: I have spent the last 20-plus years as a science journalist.

Retort: That’s not a thing…it’s a made-up title that says “I never actually practiced science, and I make my living by shouting my credentials from rooftops and then proving that even C- students get degrees.

Article: I believe in the vaccines, and that the CDC’s new advice is likely supported by the latest data. I believe in Dr. Anthony Fauci, the nation’s top infectious disease expert, who says he feels good about the CDC’s new decision and wants people to feel like we are approaching “normality.” But Thursday’s announcement from the CDC has filled me with fear.

Retort: That’s because you’re a dumbass who betrays the very science you claim to worship. You want to be afraid, need to be afraid, and are a putrid human who needs to be pitied, not read, as demonstrated by your running away from the very institutions and doctors you worshipped for the last 15 months.

Article: For one, I’m not fully vaccinated yet — my second shot was last Tuesday, so I have another week and a half to go.

Retort: Who’s fault is that? My wife, who is Ms. McCook’s age, and I, were fully vaccinated 6 weeks ago. Stay home and stay inside until you’re fully vaccinated if you’re that concerned.

Article: Even when I reach that date — May 25, marked on my calendar for weeks — my 7-year-old is still vulnerable, and likely won’t be eligible for a vaccine for months.

Retort: And your 7-year-old, who is clearly destined for decades of therapy, is not in any danger at all, whatsoever, from the Coronavirus. In fact, it would be great for her if she got it, shrugged it off, and then built up antibodies which will most likely make her immune from any further exposure. That’s what we call science, madame “Science journalist.”

Article: My biggest concern, however, is that in order for the CDC’s new advice to work, we have to trust strangers to be honest about their vaccine status and mask up if they aren’t fully vaccinated.

Retort: Who cares? You’re vaccinated! The unvaccinated can’t harm you!

Article: When a person comes close to me indoors without a mask, how do I know they are among the roughly one-third of the population that can do that safely?

Retort: See above…Who cares? You’re vaccinated! They can’t harm you!!!!!

Article: I’m not afraid for myself. Once I’m fully vaccinated, I understand that my risk of catching or spreading COVID-19 is vanishingly low…But I care about Americans who aren’t fully vaccinated, and the others who are vaccinated but remain vulnerable. I don’t want my kid to feel self-conscious or singled out because she still has to wear a mask.

Retort: The people who aren’t fully vaccinated are not asking you to care about them nor should they. That’s their god-damned issue…and, for the record…your kid hates you and will for a lifetime.

Article: I’m not only afraid — I’m angry. Because I was really looking forward to not being afraid anymore. That, to me, is what “normality” and freedom feel like. That’s why I circled May 25 on my calendar — it was the day I could stop feeling afraid that I would catch or spread COVID.

Retort: YOU’RE angry? You entitled, pretentious coward…YOU’RE angry? What about the literally hundreds of thousands of business owners who have been forever ruined by people with your absurd fear of life and all of their employees whose lives have been wrecked by scare-mongers like you, afraid of a virus that would literally do nothing to you if you even caught it?!?!?!?! And by the way…truth moment: You’re never going to live life not being afraid; fear is what drives you, motivates you and gives you life. Just admit it for Christ’s sake.

Article: And now I feel like that date is meaningless. Because even when it comes, I’ll still be afraid — not for myself, but for the future of this pandemic.

So I’m still going to wear a mask, even after May 25. Please don’t yell at me about it, or accuse me of fearmongering or some weird conspiracy plot. I’m just scared.

Retort: FINALLY! An area of agreement! No one should shame anyone for wearing a mask moving forward…just like no one should have shamed anyone for NOT wearing a mask over the last 15 months since data clearly shows that masks made absolutely no difference at all whatsoever…but you know what? We’re better than you, Alison, and we’ll make space for your pathetic, timid, scared outlook on life. And in closing, thank you so much for continuing to wear your mask just to further your own neurosis, but also to protect the rest of us from something we either don’t need to be protected from because we’re vaccinated, or because we’ve decided we don’t care, which is none of your god-damned business and certainly doesn’t require your high-minded idiocy. Go write another “science journalist article,” maybe the next one can be about the causality effect of people who need drama and fear in their lives to distract themselves from their own personal issues. Just a suggestion…of course, I’m not, like you, full of a B.S….

    Episode 2 - RAD pROBcast - Robstina May 14, 2021
    Show notes

Robstina; This week’s deep dive is into the union between my wife Christina and I. How in the world can 2 people, of 2 different races and a 20 year age difference possibly be so alike? And what’s it like to be married to the real-life Rob? We discuss the name of the pROBcast, the things that drive us the most nuts about each other, how we met, the difference between a living room and family room, and why playing cell phone pool with Dawn’s husband has actually led to arguments (and why arguments in relationships are not only healthy, but necessary).

    Rob's Soapbox - What Is That?!?! May 09, 2021
    Show notes

I woke up early Sunday morning, stumbled downstairs to our bar fridge to grab a sparkling water and reached into an empty bottom shelf…sans bottled water (or anything else for that matter).

There were a couple of bottles left when I went to bed, so this was odd; unless you’re married to my wife. After I headed to bed the night before, my wife stayed up, drank the last two bottles, and headed to bed herself, leaving behind an empty refrigerator…knowing that I start my day with an ice-cold bottle of sparkling water. What is that?

Making the quandary more of a conundrum is the fact that there was, only by happenstance, an entire case of Perrier just five feet away from the refrigerator, near the front door, having been brought into the home and left to rest there until it could make its’ way to the pantry. So, in other words, Christina could have literally taken two steps, grabbed a bottle or two of water, taken two steps back and plopped them into the fridge, and insured that there was cold water waiting for me. But alas, no cold water for me. What is that?

Lest you think I am in any way suggesting that my wife is inconsiderate or not in tune with, nor passionate about my needs, see yourself out. Far from it. This is just one of the many adorable quirks that makes Christina such a joy and adventure to live with; a favor I am certain that I return to her many times over. She’ll have to get her own soapbox for that.

Over the weekend, we recorded that latest episode of the properly titled pROBcast (a podcast hosted by a guy named Rob…get it?), in which you’ll get an earful about all things Robstina (That’s Rob and Christina mashed together…get it?). We touch on some of these “adorable” qualities, and maybe because of that, my subconscious allowed me to wake up ready to identify so many more…things that literally make me say aloud as I identify them…what is that? In other words, how can my incredibly intelligent, highly educated, passionately caring and sometimes doting wife do some of the things that she does? It’s like I’m living a “Family Guy,” skit that always ends with “That’s just Christina!”

After laboriously grabbing warm temperature water and heading to the kitchen to pour it over ice, I walked past the dogs’ water bowls only to see they were empty. No problem, I’ll just grab the empty plastic pitcher that we ALWAYS keep on the windowsill of the kitchen sink and use it to give them a refill. Oh, wait…Christina apparently used it to water her plants last night and now Rob gets to play “find the water pitcher,” by trapsing around the house, barely awake at 3:30 because my wife tends to just leave things at whatever spot she’s at when her task is done. What is that?

After spending far more time than it would have taken to simply pick up the water bowls and take them to the kitchen sink for a refill, the water pitcher was discovered in the bathroom…where there are no plants. What is that?

At this point, I just wanted to slowly wake up as opposed to diving straight into the day so I made my way to the living room sofa and began one of my favorite pastimes at Williams Manor; trying to figure out where my wife may have left the TV remote control. We have a coffee table with a basket that houses the various remotes, yet the basket is always empty. What is that?

And so the game begins…Could the remote be wrapped up in the blanket she was using last night? Maybe it’s in the console between sofa seats, of perhaps on one of the dog kennels…nope to all. I know it’s not in the cupholder that I use whenever we’re on the couch together because, like usual, she’s loaded that up with her various garbage from the night before like candy wrappers, tissues, and toothpicks. What is that?

Speaking of cupholders, the other one (the one she uses) is, as usual, occupied by a can of Sprite. Sometimes it’s Gatorade or the aforementioned Perrier, but one thing that’s always a constant is that whatever the beverage is…it’s barely drunk. My wife has this need to open a drink, take a few sips, and then leave it sitting out to warm, rot, go flat, and become a waste product. I’ve never kept track but I’m pretty sure we throw out more liquid beverages than we actually consume. What is that?

AH! The remote…there it is! On the almost always un-used side of the sofa near the window, as though she ended her evening by turning off the TV and then chucking the remote in the most random direction possible. What is that? Side note…there have been times that I have not found the remote and had to go elsewhere in the home to watch TV until her scrambled egg brain can remember where she left it. I’m pretty sure it was in the oven once. What is that?

The oven reminds me of the kitchen again, which makes me smile as I think about Christina’s need to always take her leftovers home from the restaurant which literally NEVER get eaten. I’m pretty sure I understand why she takes them, it’s to make sure the restaurant knows she did actually like the food, she’s just a light eater…but the need to then put them in the fridge, knowing she’s never going to touch them again…what is that?

She’ll do the same thing with foods she makes too much of. Out of nowhere, probably monthly, she’ll make an enormous batch of egg or tuna salad…something gross. She’ll put it in a Tupperware and eat it for a few days and then she’ll grow tired of it. Fine…I’ll ask, once observing the consumption has stopped, if I can throw it out and will get a resounding “NO, I’m still working on it,” even though I know that’s not true. And then it will sit in the refrigerator until it turns color, at which point it’s now too gross for her to deal with, and she calls in 1-800-gross-remover, AKA, her husband. What is that?

Similarly, my wife is incapable of ordering only what we want on Doordash. The other night, we wanted a pizza…and only a pizza…and we both knew that we were only going to eat pizza, but because she feels bad for the restaurant and the driver, she buys a salad as well, knowing it’s going to Scout the Labrador. What is that?

As I write this, I just lived a husband’s dream; the wife mea culpa. It’s a rarely talked about and even rarer experienced phenomenon in which the wife actually circles back to a previous disagreement in which she was wrong from the beginning, never acknowledged said wrongness, and then suddenly comes around. I’m sitting at my office desk typing, and in walks said gorgeous creature, having returned from the backyard where she’s been running and swimming the dogs. In her hand is a cell phone charger…MY cell phone charger which I knew she took from me weeks ago and never returned, leaving me charger-less. You see, we have about a dozen of these cordy creatures, and yet they all slowly disappear at the hands of my wife, never to be seen again. I’ve started hiding and carrying with me my one last known charger, only to have her swipe it in a moment of weakness, leaving me with a dying battery and a Defcon 1 level of frustration, leading to one of those really stupid marital arguments in which she swears up and down she never took the very thing I gave her…only to have her return, just now, giving me back the very thing she never took and apologizing. If I had time to orgasm, I would have.

So, the answer to the question, “what is that,” is multi-faceted. It’s my wife, it’s marriage, it’s fun, and it’s life. She drives me nuts, as do I her, and we love it.

As we discuss on the pROBcast, my wife and I argue and we disagree, and that’s healthy and normal. If you’re not arguing and disagreeing with your significant other, you’re doing it wrong. Fighting needs to be limited to almost never, but spirited teasing and disagreements are to be expected…and if what you’re arguing about is cell phone chargers, water pitchers, and remote controls, you’re on pretty solid ground.

I just took a break to head to the kitchen and refresh my drink…and sure enough, I’m reminded of my wife by one her classic calling cards. We had groceries delivered earlier which Christina was nice enough to bring in and put away…except for 3 totally random things left on the counter; hamburger buns (which have a drawer and we’re not having hamburgers tonight), a bottle of floor cleaner that goes under the sink, and a CVS sized receipt which goes in the garbage…all left out as if to be a flashing neon sign that says “Christina was here!” She does the same thing when she cooks…she’ll clean up and put away everything except for a few random things, as if she just couldn’t be bothered to put the halved onion in a Ziploc bag into the refrigerator, or throw away the empty can of tomato sauce, even though every single other thing she used has been cleaned and/or discarded.

    What is that?
