Rob's Soapbox - Congratulations, You Woke Up! Feb 14, 2021
    Show notes

Twenty-five years ago, comedian Chris Rock famously riffed on the divide in the African American community between black people and “N-words.” The latter, he said, would always brag about accomplishing and doing things that were considered by the rest of us as things you’re expected to do; most famously, taking care of your kids.

While in 1996, the bit was viewed as a black-on-black joke designed to be that community’s version of acknowledging that all cultures and races have their own version of “white-trash,” it turned out to be sadly prophetic for the entire country and culture writ large.

Enter 2021; where we celebrate the most mundane and basic things as actual accomplishments.

We brag about 19-year-olds who no longer live at home. We actually hold “graduation ceremonies” for kids segueing from elementary to middle school and middle to high school. Good luck getting a job with either of those diplomas, dipshit.

I have friends who own small businesses that have to thank their employees who actually show up on-time for their shifts. After a year of Door-Dashing and Instacarting, we’ve become a nation that celebrates when our orders show up as we asked them to. The RAD show gets emails on a regular basis from people who brag about working 40 hours a week…40 HOURS A WEEK…that’s 2 ½ days of work for a successful person, who, BTW, would never brag about it, for God’s sake. Jesus Jumped Up Christ.

Where did this all begin? No one knows for certain, but I’ve got a pretty good idea. For starters, congratulating people for getting pregnant is something that needs to be banished into the ash heap of history. There are 267 babies born every minute on this planet; there is absolutely nothing miraculous or impressive about giving birth; far less impressive is merely getting pregnant, which, if you consider abortion statistics breaks out to about 555 women getting pregnant every minute on Earth. You have literally accomplished absolutely nothing special by getting pregnant. More than 90% of the planet between the ages of 15-44 can do so at any time by merely humping. And if you’re in that unfortunate 10% that can’t, and wants to…sorry for your troubles.

For reference, 140 million babies are born worldwide each year, while 75 million abortions are reported, and about the same number are miscarried. Do the math…getting pregnant is almost the most simple, basic thing we do on earth behind breathing. So, congrats on that breath! Way to inhale! HIGH FIVE!!!

Yes, yes…I realize that we’re not usually congratulating people on the fact that they were able to become pregnant, but rather on the imminent joyful birth of their endless burden…errr….I mean baby, but you get my point. Or, maybe you don’t.

I trace all of this to the 1990’s; a glorious decade to be alive and, apparently, to also plant the seeds of America’s destruction. The economy was booming, America was at peace, and the most important things we had to worry about were making sure we saw Seinfeld, counting our calories from fat, finding SnackWell cookies, debating the emergence of grunge music, preparing for Y2K, and always having a water bottle in our hands. In other words, we quite literally had to make up things to worry about; and boy did we.

The 90’s saw the launch of the self-esteem movement in schools across the nation, in which we told children they were special, when they clearly weren’t. This was the decade that saw us begin to give out 7th place trophies, and award kids for merely “attending” school, not thriving at it. We even created “new math,” which quite literally was defined as whatever the kid said was the answer, was deemed to be correct. 2+2=5? Yup! Well done.

We even started basing kids’ grades not on subject matter and correct answers, but also on politeness, honesty, truthfulness, kindness, courage and conviction. Don’t believe me? That line was taken from a 1990 New York Times Article about the emergence of the self-esteem movement; we saw it coming, we knew it was stupid, and we did it anyway, all in an ill-fated effort to coddle our children; who now make up the majority of America’s adult population and cheer the most mundane and asinine things as accomplishments. https://www.nytimes.com/1990/03/28/garden/using-self-esteem-to-fix-society-s-ills.html

The oddest thing to me, about this, is the manner in which the very generation that created this mess, mine (Gen X), has also embraced it. Absolutely nothing about the way in which those of us over 40 were raised resembles the way we raised our children. It’s like the entire decade of the 90’s was opposite day…for 3,652 days in a row. Damage done, and, to this day, accepted and even cheered, and then not.

I have endless friends in their 40’s who complain about the “younger generations,” and how entitled and lazy they are. These same friends have their adult children, in their mid-20’s, living at home with them, jobless, and “finding themselves.” HUH?

News Flash: You are not special. As the movie “The Incredibles,” taught us: When you say that everyone is special, you are simultaneously saying that no one is. If we’re all winners, then there are no losers, which is why we also stopped keeping score at youth sporting events three decades ago. WE did…the kids didn’t…but we still found a way to beat out of them over time the idea that winning mattered. And what kid wouldn’t embrace that? Telling a kid that he or she matters, is special, and is important, even when they are failing at everything they try, is a child’s dream…and the ticket to modern day America; where everything that everyone does matters and is important. It doesn’t, and it isn’t. And saying that is now considered verbal abuse.

I blame Johnny Carson. Google him.

Johnny Carson is as close as I ever got to having an idol. I was actually taught to believe in myself and no one else and to aspire to be better than anyone or everyone I came across. It was a terrible time in which I was raised. I was led to believe that I would have to rely on myself for my entire life, and that, while I would encounter helpful people along the way, only I was in control of my destiny. I was made to own my choices and accept the consequences that came from them without making excuses. It was awful. Self-reliance and personal responsibility were actually a thing then. The agony.

Johnny Carson hosted The Tonight Show until May of 1992, when he retired and Jay Leno took over. And so, began the end of society as we knew it. The emergence of everyone and everything mattering began.

Don’t believe me? Don’t see the connection? Watch some clips of Johnny Carson’s Tonight Show, specifically his opening monologue each night, and then watch the comedy shows of today; Real Time with Bill Maher, the Late Show, the Tonight Show, Jimmy Kimmel, all of them…and notice this: Every single joke that today’s performers tell is applauded. Carson’s almost never were.

Johnny Carson was one of the greatest entertainers of all-time, and he almost never got ovations; because our standards were high, and so were his. Many of Carson’s greatest moments were when his jokes DIDN’T land and he made fun of himself. When Carson told a great joke, people laughed…and then waited for him to make them laugh again, which he did. Because that was the job. Make us laugh and laugh and laugh until you’re done.

Today, every single punch line is followed by a round of applause, no matter how lame the joke. Even bad jokes are applauded, just by fewer people. Watching Bill Maher is particularly painful because when he hits a punch-line, the first thing he does is look around for approval, hoping to see everyone he makes eye-contact with slapping their hands together because, I mean, hey, he’s standing there saying stuff and that makes him special.

So, yes…Johnny Carson is to blame, because he retired…and then died, just like our demand for actual effort and quality.

Stay with the theme and compare…In the 90’s, the dominant sit-coms were Seinfeld, Friends and Frasier. A decade later, it was Scrubs, Everybody Loves Raymond, and Two and Half Men. Need I say more?

The sports world mirrors this as well…somehow, people actually have the audacity to posit that Lebron James belongs in the G.O.A.T. discussion…he doesn’t. It’s not even close…he isn’t in the top 5, and barely warrants a discussion of being in the top 10, but because he’s woke, and the best the game has to offer today, he absolutely must be one of the greatest of all time because it’s our time, and only we matter, those who are here now. Michael Jordan? Pfffttt…what is he? Like 60? Pllleeeeaaassseeee. No one over 50 allowed.

We saw this Super Bowl Sunday as well; as endless amounts of hyperbolic praise was heaped upon man-child Patrick Mahomes. Jim Nantz, one of the best sports announcers alive, who had one of his worst days on that Sunday, actually started the game by saying that two of the greatest quarterbacks of all-time were facing off. Pardon me? Patrick Mahomes and his one Super Bowl Championship and two appearances is already one of the G.O.A.T.’s? On what planet? In what reality?

Stop it…everyone just stop it. You didn’t accomplish anything by waking up today, or getting dressed, or showing up on time, or feeding your kids, or anything else that falls under the heading of the “bare minimum required for lifing the day.” Praising people for existing is what got us into this mess and it needs to stop. Bragging about someone who hasn’t gone to jail, beaten their spouse, or declared bankruptcy is akin to thanking Hitler for only killing 5 million Jews.

YES…I played the Hitler card. Because we’re committing our own form of societal genocide, except in our case it doesn’t discriminate. We’re destroying the entire fabric of everything that was once the American society and culture.

And now that I’ve finished doing my expected and assigned weekly column, I will await my parade and endless cheers for doing exactly what I was supposed to do. All hail me, for I have done my job, and nothing more.

    Rob's Soapbox - The Minimum Wage Feb 07, 2021
    Show notes

How little we can possibly pay people to work is back in the news and so is the endless debate over America’s minimum wage. As per usual, everyone is wrong on this subject.

On the left, my idiotic Democratic friends argue for what’s called a “living wage,” which is nothing more than a trojan horse for ultimately sending money to people, regardless of whether they are working or not, to ensure that they have enough to “live.” If you Google the phrase “Universal Basic Income,” you will see endless stories of moron after moron from Mark Zuckerberg to Andrew Yang and everyone in between all the way to Bernie Sanders espousing the virtues of taking money away from those who work to earn it, and handing it to those who have no interest in, or intention of, ever working.

Raising the minimum wage under the guise of guaranteeing people the ability to afford a certain level of lifestyle is the first step towards Universal Basic Income. It’s un-American and an instant non-motivator. It traps and keeps people under the thumb and control of government (which, in turn, keeps them voting for those who support it).

Capitalism is the American economic system and it has transformed and transitioned more people from the depths of poverty and despair to wealth and prosperity than any other idea or system ever devised. In our system, people are paid based on what the market states that they’re worth. It has never been designed to be “fair,” or equitable. That’s why teachers, police officers, and members of our military make 10% of what some moron who owns and hosts a successful radio show does. There’s nothing fair or equitable about that, but it’s what the market has determined we’re all worth.

As for the minimum wage, it was, and never has been, designed to be a living wage. It’s a jumping off point; you get a minimum wage job in high school to get into the work force and start gaining experience and working your way up. Minimum wage jobs are not careers…they’re not even really jobs; they are the first rung on the ladder to whatever your definition of success is. Democrats, Liberals, and Progressives need to stop trying to fundamentally alter the greatest economic system on Earth and recognize that life is not fair and was never intended to be. Some people will fall through the cracks…usually, as a result of their own unwillingness to do what it takes not to.

Meanwhile, my moronic Republican friends argue that the free market is the be all and end all…let the chips fall where they may, the cream will rise to the top, the strongest will survive, and all of that other macho bullshit that doesn’t actually manifest itself in the real world. The minimum wage was created in 1938, at the height of the Great Depression, when people were literally willing to do anything for anything. Americans were so desperate that they were living a real-life version of “Name That Tune,” but it was “Name that Job and Wage.” People would line up to inhale sewage and when the guy in front of him said he’d do it for 2 cents, the next guy said 1 cent. Thus, the minimum wage, as a form of protection for working people, was created. And there’s nothing wrong with that. Capitalism needs rules, boundaries, and safeguards, and, more importantly, a bare basic minimum price needs to be placed on humanity, lest we repeat horrors of our past and lurch backwards into slavery…for, there are people, in their most desperate moments, who will agree to work for no money, and mere shelter; even if they’re shackled while doing so.

Additionally, conservatives argue (stupidly) that raising the minimum wage will increase the prices we all pay for goods and services. This is provably untrue; we have the data. At no time in the history of the nearly 100-year existence of the minimum wage in America has it ever led to an inflation of prices. Screaming that an increase in the minimum wage will lead to “$14 Big Macs!!!” Is as stupid and lazy as accusing President Obama of being a Muslim. There were legitimate reasons to criticize President Obama and his policies, just as there are legitimate arguments against draconian increases in the minimum wage. There’s no need to make shit up to make your point. For example, we know that minimum wage hikes, when forced on businesses too quickly and with too great an increase, costs people jobs. Bosses, managers, and corporations don’t raise prices, they merely decrease their workforce to absorb the costs. Those left standing happily pick up the slack of the terminated, for they’re just thankful to still have a job (and in most cases are making more money)!

With all of that said, there is an absurd argument going on right now about raising the minimum wage in America. The federal minimum wage is $7.25 per hour and has been for a dozen years. While almost no one actually makes that little anywhere, that isn’t the point. Inflation has skyrocketed in the last 12 years and, most notably, the last 12 months. Everything costs exponentially more, and providing a solid financial floor to working people is not unreasonable. We can’t all walk around bitching about the homeless problem in America and then insist on paying people who are willing to work too little to live.

Additionally, the current proposal to raise the minimum wage to $15 per hour does so over the course of 5 years…5 YEARS! The bill, if passed, would increase the minimum wage to $9.50 in 2021, $11 in 2022, $12.50 in 2023, $14 in 2024, and finally $15 in 2025. That’s hardly an unreasonable burden on business owners. Not to mention, it’s also hardly a massive gift to workers. Today, in 2021, someone making $15 per hour and working full-time makes $28,000 per year; that’s below America’s poverty line. By 2025, it will be further below it.

Believe me, I get it…it’s a hard time to own and run a business in America. I deal with the reality of it every single day. But you know what? It’s a hard time to try to make a living in America, too. And while it isn’t the responsibility of all of us to make sure everyone is taken care of, it is our obligation to ensure that everyone has the opportunity. Those who refuse to pursue such can be left behind, but those who want to take the first step towards prosperity should have a reasonable and realistic pathway forward. A Universal Basic Income is a stupid idea that belongs in the former Soviet Union. A $15 minimum wage is an American ideal we should all be behind.

    Rob's Soapbox - We've Cured The Flu! Feb 01, 2021
    Show notes

My wife is constantly encouraging me to do more positively themed soapboxes. I’ve told her that the very nature of having a platform to share my views implies negativity because no one really wants to listen to someone saying everything is great. But, she’s right…it doesn’t have to be negative ALWAYS. And so, this week, I come to you with amazing news.

Congratulations, America! In addition to such great contributions to the world such as Jazz, Thomas Edison, potato chips, and the credit card, The United States has once again bestowed upon the world another gift; we have cured the flu!

The viral disease that we came to know as influenza in 1933, but more commonly has been referred to simply as the flu, has been ravaging the Earth for 6,000 years, but it has taken America only 10 months to eradicate it from the globe. All hail the Red, White and Blue.

As many as 650,000 people in the world die every year of the flu…well, they used to. Now, and forever more moving forward, the number will essentially be zero.

You see, we are nearing the end of the annual flu season in America and lo and behold, basically no one has gotten or died from it. Astounding doesn’t begin to explain it. On average, 50,000 Americans die every year of the flu, including 200 children…almost 800,000 of us wind up in the hospital as a result! Not anymore!

Do you want to know why? Well, it’s all those fantastic masks and social distancing, of course. Thank God for our brave and heroic leaders.

All of this, of course, is complete provable bullshit. But, it makes for a great story and reenforces how brilliant the worlds’ health experts and politicians have been. It also gives them a launching pad for never ending power and control. Every fall moving forward will be declared “mask season” and people will be told to cover their faces from October to March to STOP THE SPREAD of the flu. No hugging, touching, feeling (#Journey) or indoor dining, either. I mean, my God…you might catch a sniffle and we can’t have that anymore.

Let’s start with the dishonesty and work our way towards the stupidity, lunacy, and criminality of all of this.

Flu cases, hospitalizations, and deaths are, and always have been, based entirely on estimates and mathematical extrapolations. For starters, do you even know anyone who has ever been tested for the flu? Brandon is literally the only person I have ever met who has. Our ability to test for the flu is beyond lame; the test we have is only good if someone is tested within 48 hours of getting ill…and prior to making everyone stark raving made over a sore throat, no one ran to the doctor with initial symptoms of the flu. Doctors simply diagnose patients as having the flu based on observation, then they report those numbers and the CDC and WHO put that information into a giant calculator and tell us all how many people got and/or died from the flu.

Shift to now. The one place no one wants to be is anywhere near a doctor’s office or hospital. After nearly a year of scaring the living hell out of people on every level, many of us refuse to go near a medical facility even if we are sick. Since 99.97% of all people under 50 survive Covid, and since many employers will insist you stay home (many without paying you) if you test positive, there are a lot of us walking around with stuffy noses, sore throats, and a mild fever hiding it. Those who do seek treatment almost always do so virtually, since doctors don’t want you spreading the dreading Corona, and they diagnose you, via a Zoom call, as having Covid. You are, what we call, “presumed Covid.” Yes, that’s a thing…Google it. No one presumes the flu anymore, we all presume Covid. That’s a hell of a way to eradicate the flu; just assume no one has it.

Those who do seek treatment often do so well after the first 48 hours of symptoms because they’re hoping and praying, they don’t need to go near a hospital. Once they do, if they even are given a flu test, they of course test negative, since it’s well past its’ incubation period. Ironically, they also test negative for Covid, but they are PRESUMED to have Covid because…well…SCIENCE. Thus, no flu.

As for the children, of course they’re not getting the flu sine we aren’t letting them go to school in much of the country, nor play sports or have play days.

But wait…How is it that half of the country spent the holidays traveling and visiting loved ones, mingling households, not wearing masks, hugging one another, and being told that they were surging the spread of Covid, and yet no one got the flu? This makes absolutely zero sense! And there it is…no sense at all. And we’re all falling for it over and over again.

And what if…just for a moment…we grant them their asinine reality and cede that yes, the almighty masks and social distancing and working and learning from home are the reasons that absolutely no one is getting the flu (even though millions of people are)…have we truly, really, honestly, sunk so low that this is the life we choose? We’re so afraid of body aches and chills that we’d rather live with our faces covered and the absolute minimal amount of human contact possible? Jesus, what has happened to us?

I long for the days of shoulder blocking endless New Yorkers as I make my down the Avenue of the Americas, or literally feeling droplets from a dozen strangers spewed down upon me at a Metallica concert. I long for those days because that’s what we used to call life…and living.

We’ve been promised an end since the beginning. Two weeks to stop the spread became a few months and then many months, and then an entire holiday season and then a year and now…as they roll out the vaccine, we’re told a few more months. The almighty Anthony Fauci says we’ll see some “some sense of normalcy” at the end of summer…which is mid-September but he doesn’t quantify the word “some.” Awesome…so we can go back to football games, but we still have to cover our faces like a bunch of criminals? Which…how ironic is that…for another time I suppose…

I hate conspiracy theories and conspiracy theorists. There is almost never a bogeyman behind the door or under the curtain. However, there is a stark difference between a conspiracy theory and linking logic to come to a conclusion…and the truth of the matter is that we have handed the dorks, nerds, losers, and weaklings of the world the key to power and control over all of us and they are never going to let go of it if we allow them.

If you’ve ever had power over another person, you know the feeling…it is, in fact, exhilarating. Those of us with morals and values recognize immediately the Spider Man quote; “With great power comes great responsibility.” Most amongst us don’t have morals or values, and certainly not the dorks and nerds who were tortured as children and molded to believe that they were outcasts only to become the learned…and now, the powerful. They are salivating at the idea of being able to tell us all to MASK UP (a la South Korea…Google it)…at their very whim or whisper.

And so…to summarize…if all goes to plan, we will basically, irradicate Covid in 2021…and yet, amazingly, we will all be told that the flu is bearing down upon us come fall and that we all must mask up and socially distance to avoid getting a virus that we’ve all been perfectly happy living with (the flu) for centuries…and I remind you…the reason we never wore masks during flu season is that there is absolutely no evidence that living like god-damned raccoons prevents the spread of influenza. But who cares? Living has been redefined as not living. All we care about now, as a collective, is remaining alive…like zombies…and not enjoying life in all of the ways that we used to. No more concerts, comedy shows, or festivals in the ways that we used to enjoy them because that sort of fun isn’t allowed any longer lest you get a runny nose. We’re teetering and waiting for a consensus to arise and extend an answer to us all. So far, the verdict is that yes, we’re “all” willing to stop living to stay alive. I hope and pray that enough of us will reject that and demand a return to actual normalcy, but I have my doubts.

As for my wife…positivity is negative. After all, god forbid any of us test positive for Covid since it’s a death sentence…even though it isn’t for almost all of us. But hey, at least it isn’t the flu…

    Rob's Soapbox - Don't You Dare Be Happy Jan 24, 2021
    Show notes

ROB’S SOAPBOX FOR THE WEEK OF JANUARY 24, 2021

    DON’T YOU DARE BE HAPPY!

As my wife Christina would say: “What are we doing here?”

With almost no ability to agree on anything anymore, one thing that all sane, lucid Americans would concur on is that we have done deep, intense, and devastating damage to our psyches this past year. We’d never agree on whose fault that is, what should or shouldn’t have been done, or pretty much anything else, but we’d all agree that we’re far from knowing the full mental, emotional, and psychological damage we’ve done to our society as a whole. And then there’s the children…Jesus, what we’ve done to our children…

So, given that, can we just stop with the terrible and the fear and the “things are never ever going to get better?”

We will no doubt never again be like we were one year ago…but things will get better than this; if we allow them to, but we don’t even let ourselves be happy, positive, joyful, or hopeful about anything at all anymore. Not as a collective.

Remember the dreaded “Holiday Surge?” We were all told not to have the audacity to spend Christmas and New Year’s with family and friends. Endless messages included asinine tag lines like “stay apart this year so we can all be alive next year.” And yet, we still traveled. We traveled in record setting numbers for 2020 with more than a million people flying every single day for 10 days in a row!! Oh, the humanity!!!

This horrified the almighty experts. Endless dire predictions came hurtling at us of a holiday surge caused by all of the travel, indoor blending of multiple households, and irresponsible behaviors like hugging people we loved. Hospitals would be overrun; it would be worse than it was in April, and July, and September COMBINED!!!

And yet, this weekend, it was revealed that it never happened. Not to the extremes we were all told were inevitable. Not even close.

Now, that might seem hard to believe if you’ve spent anytime watching or reading news or social media, but that doesn’t change the facts of the matter. As reported by none other than “The Washington Post,” one of the nation’s largest newspapers and a first-class cheerleader of panic porn as it relates to Covid:

The United States (has) avoided the worst-case coronavirus scenarios that officials feared would overwhelm hospitals in the aftermath of Christmas and New Year’s gatherings…Hospitals had braced for enormous spikes in patients that could have forced rationing care, exhausted already limited beds and sparked a nationwide shortage of health-care workers. But officials across the country said those dire predictions — a wave of severe Christmas cases weeks after a rapid increase from Thanksgiving — did not materialize.”

Other than Los Angeles, which is a Covid disaster zone on every level, this report mirrors what people in the health care industry around the country have been saying out loud to anyone who would listen; no biggie…shoulder shrug…this is what it’s like every other year when flu season spikes…we’re used to it.

This should be celebrated. Christ, it’s a miracle it’s even being reported! But, lest you think this is a positive thing, don’t you dare! Don’t for one second think that maybe we’ve finally achieved some level of herd immunity to build on. Don’t even begin to believe that there’s any sort of light at the end of the tunnel because that light is actually a train bearing down upon us ready to end every one of us! In that same story, first paragraph, they make sure that you stay as terrified as you must:

After starting the article reporting that “The United States (has) avoided the worst-case coronavirus scenarios that officials feared would overwhelm hospitals in the aftermath of Christmas and New Year’s gatherings…” they immediately threw cold water on any inkling you had to, for even one moment, let some weight lift off of you:

“But experts caution that the threat from the virus has not diminished and could intensify with the emergence of new variants.”

In fact, the overwhelming body of the article is dedicated to more dread, fear, and foreboding:

“Hospital leaders and experts are still on edge. Variants of the coronavirus…could result in further case spikes in cold weather months when people are more likely to be indoors. And the availability of the vaccine, while offering lifesaving protection to millions, could also lead to a false sense of complacency, particularly as it can be difficult to obtain… The American Hospital Association says “No one should be fooled that we are in an easy period right now,” said Nancy Foster, the group’s vice president…“The cold hard data says we were on the brink in many places, many communities across the country.”

    https://www.washingtonpost.com/health/2021/01/23/coronavirus-christmas-surge/

Well of course we’re on the brink…we have to be. All of the time. Death, sadness, despair has to be right around the corner all of the time because it sells…and it controls.

    It isn’t just Covid, either.

Just in the last few weeks, we saw then President-Elect Biden call for calm and unity as the capitol was stormed in a true moment of leadership…and 24 hours later, he pissed all over it by reminding the nation that we are divided on the issue of race in ways we haven’t been in nearly 50 years. So much for unity.

Then, last week, President Biden gave what some people, including conservatives, called “the best inauguration speech they’d ever heard,” in which he offered hope, optimism, and a coming together of all sides. 24 hours later he spent 20 minutes telling us that the dark winter was still coming, and that we should expect the total to rise to 600,000 dead Americans before spring. So much for hope and optimism.

Like always, that’s not a political observation; it’s one of common sense. Every single thing that has any sort of a positive tinge to it has to immediately be shat upon.

There’s nothing hypocritical about this, by the way. While yes, I have spent the last 10 months warning against getting your hopes up and endlessly trying to prepare you for the reality of the days ahead of us, I have also stressed how important it is to enjoy good news and happy moments.

Fewer dead and hospitalized Americans than expected is a good thing. Let us have it. Calls for unity and calm are good…repeat them, and act on them. And for the love of god…in the word’s of Reverend Lovejoy’s wife, Helen, on the Simpson’s: “Won’t somebody please think of the children?”

Rob's Soapbox - My (No Doubt First Of Many) 2021 Meltdown Jan 19, 2021
    Show notes

There is no coherence to this soapbox, nor is there meant to be any. It’s late Monday on MLK day and I’m already way past my self-imposed deadline for when this should have been written and recorded…in other words, I’m having a 2021 day.

I’ve taken great schadenfreude over the past year watching moron after moron believe that there was light at the end of the tunnel.

The pandemic and our related troubles would end with Memorial Day…then Independence Day…then Labor Day…then Election Day…and certainly when 2020 was over.

This was always lunacy. There was never any reason to believe that we were going to get our lives back at any of those times, or any time in the near future. We’re less than a month into 2021 and we’d all be wise to call it a second wasted year. Here’s to 2022.

So, it comes as no surprise to me that I’ve emotionally melted down this weekend. The endless amount of shit we all have to deal with, piled on top of actual life, is more than enough to break all of us at times; and that’s the key…making sure it’s temporary. We’ve been talking a lot on the show the past few weeks about self-care and self-love, which is more important now than ever and this is one form of my self-care…writing; so, indulge me, if you will.

My weekend began with an amazing date night with my wife at a locally owned restaurant that happens to be run by an African American family which will become a salient point later; bear with me.

From there…family issues that will remain private; a grave injustice foisted upon my wife via law school, and then getting caught up on “Your Honor” on Showtime (an amazing show starring Brian Cranston) followed by the HBO documentary on Tiger Woods…and I just lost it emotionally.

For those that don’t already know…I’m married to a black woman. She’s extraordinary and beyond any of my childhood dreams…which is important to the point of this rambling because as a result of the emotions stirred inside of me this weekend, I started to seek out my favorite teen music; Whitney Houston, Toni Braxton, Sade, and Anita Baker. All Black women. I remembered, as I watched their music videos, being so stupidly infatuated with every one of them. All of them incredibly talented and, to me, so beautiful in ways I didn’t understand. I’ve always been drawn to and infatuated with women of color and yet only recently have had the opportunity to truly explore and indulge in it.

Believe it or not, I grew up in a time when America was only beginning to come to grips with the proper equal role of African Americans. I was 17 when the first black quarterback led his team to a Super Bowl victory…because, prior to Doug Williams (no relation) doing so, it was common knowledge that black men were too stupid to run an NFL offense…something I heard repeated well into the 21st century by now former friends of mine.

I get it…this is all very personal. And it’s easy to dismiss my emotions by saying or asserting that I am only feeling them because I’m married to a black woman…and you’d be right; and that’s what has made me so emotional. I’m trying to figure out my role in this mess that we’ve created.

It’s 2021…and yet, people are still protesting and, worse, rioting over racial injustice. Many of them are nothing more than opportunists and anarchists, but that doesn’t take away from the legitimacy of their grievances. I live it…and have…every day for 6 years. I see how my wife is treated differently. I see how she’s suddenly treated better when I, a white man, am beside her. It’s real and it’s despicable…and I have to slap myself sometimes to remember that it’s actually 2021. Jesus.

Without getting specific, my wife was denied an exemption by her law school that has been granted to other students with identical experience, grades, attendance, and credentials…all of whom were white. Christina and I are the last look for and/or ever play the “race card,” but how do you not go there when something like that happens?

The Tiger Woods Documentary on HBO highlighted the extraordinary levels of racism he grew up with…and he’s younger than me for god’s sake! He was kicked off of golf courses because of the color of his skin…in my lifetime. We all reach our breaking points; now more than ever, and I just couldn’t take it anymore.

I remember Kevin…literally the only black kid at my high school of 1200 students in Pleasanton, California. I met Kevin years before high school in the park near my childhood home. He pulled a knife on me when I was about 12. I have no recollection of why, I just remember being scared out of my mind and putting my hands in the air hoping the knife wasn’t going to be plunged into my gut. For whatever reason, it ended peacefully and I ran home. In 1983, it would have been so easy to call the police and have Kevin sent to Juvenile Hall.

White boy says what? That’s all it would have taken…especially in Pleasanton in 1983.

My father…in all of his amazing wisdom suggested a different tact…he told me to go to Kevin’s house (a few streets away) and talk to him. Alone. Not the ‘ol parent on parent meeting, but rather a 12-year-old man to man meeting. Kevin and I ultimately became best friends; he went on to become the star running back for our championship high school football team and as editor of the school newspaper I loved covering every step he took. Kevin taught me that growing up under a microscope can lead even the best people to respond in aggressive ways and that sometimes all they need is acceptance and understanding. Kevin wasn’t a bad kid…in fact, he was an amazing young man who deserved a more nurturing environment. Shitheads want to claim that it’s because of his skin color that he pulled a knife on me as if random violence and weaponry is unique to people of color. I laugh at such assertions remembering the same year that I got sucker punched by a white kid because I looked him in the eye and told him that “no, you can’t join our baseball game.” He decked me. I crawled home and my father told me the same thing…go confront him man to man. That jerk also became one of my best friends through college age.

As an adult, I can say with unqualified certainty, that I am more comfortable with and surrounded by black people; whether they be family or not. If that’s racist, so be it…the African Americans I know are one thing above everything; real. Honesty and truth seems to define their journey and I can’t express in any way how much I appreciate it.

As an escape through all of this I started listening to music as a way to self soothe which brings us back to the beginning; Whitney Houston, Janet Jackson, Sade, Mariah Carey…just listening to their talent and remembering how amazing they are/were…and then the final dagger of my 2021 meltdown...many of their videos were concert videos… I want to be in a stadium, auditorium, or amphitheater with my wife on one arm and a total random stranger right next to me dancing and spewing their droplets all over me. This has to end. All of it. My wife matters…our marriage matters…and all of our lives matter…and it’s time to get them back.
