    Rob's Soapbox - Enjoy A Poo Aug 22, 2021
    Show notes

I realize that people of all ages are constantly opining about the trappings of technology, while, (ironically), usually typing on a keypad and/or staring at a screen. Let’s be real, you’re reading this on such technology. Just because people are hypocrites, it doesn’t mean that they are also wrong.

To be clear, I love technology and believe, on a whole, this is an amazing time to be alive vis a vis innovation. More information and access is always a better thing, even when it exposes how stupid and dangerous a society is. The truth is, though, that we can’t, individually fix this rotten cultural cesspool we live in, but we can do some high-quality maintenance on ourselves.

Countless studies show time after time, the dangers of screen time. Did you know there’s even a name for it (of course there is, everything has a title…) it’s called Screen Dependency Disorder, which is a stupid name because it doesn’t create an effective acronym. Obviously, Screen Addiction Disorder would have been perfect, but SAD was already taken by the totally fake and made-up Seasonal Affective Disorder, the condition of being depressed because of the change of seasons…pro-tip…fly somewhere, the weather will be different, dipstick. But, seriously, SDD? That’s way too close to STD and it discourages people from walking around and sharing their struggles as no one wants to loudly and proudly shout “I have SDD,” lest they see countless people nervously fidget and sidle away from them. https://www.premierhealth.com/your-health/articles/health-topics/screen-addiction-affects-physical-and-mental-health

    https://nhahealth.com/screen-dependency-disorder-the-effects-of-screen-time-addiction/

There’s also Internet Addiction Disorder, which, when acronymed (not a word), sounds like something a terrorist uses to blow people up. Why couldn’t they call it Compulsive Overuse of Computer Complex…y’know, COCC! Or, Tons of Internet Time, TIT for short. Either way, it’s a real thing…unlike Carpal Tunnel Syndrome, which is a nice way of saying you have weak forearms, or Fibromyalgia, which is the medical industry’s way of saying “we have no idea what’s wrong with you, so we’ve decided it’s all in your head and we’ve got a big, long, vowel-filled word to describe it…here’s you’re prescription for a ton of anti-depressants.” https://www.psycom.net/iadcriteria.html

I’m no fan of making everything a disease, syndrome, addiction, ailment, disorder, or malady, but in the case of screen time, we are absolutely hooked…and the whole thing is designed that way! Silicon Valley was outed years ago by the very people who created Social Media…they said the quiet part out loud and admitted that the entire system is literally engineered to essentially alter your brain chemically into NEEDING more and more screen time. https://www.cnet.com/tech/services-and-software/facebook-twitter-are-designed-to-be-like-behavioural-cocaine-for-users-insiders/

I’m certainly not suggesting that the answer to any of this is a complete and total abandonment of technology; that’s as asinine as asking a normal American living a normal life to not own a car; maybe more so. I am, however, suggesting that maybe we all could approach technology the same way we should approach food and alcohol…after all, we have a stellar track record in America when it comes to our eating and drinking habits! Wait a minute…well, I’m too far in at this point to think of another topic and start over, so I’m plowing through on my idea and suggesting that it’s time to implement Operation SLIME…Slowly Learn Internet Moderation Exercise. No? Ok, how about LIME; Less Internet More Everything-else? Do we have to go with LIMEE? That sounds so un-American.

In any case, the keyword was moderation. Almost everything in life should be done in moderation. If we do anything all of the time, it is simply too much, and it’s also ruined. Yes, even the good stuff…that’s how we got Sex and Porn Addiction for God’s sake! According to data, the average American spends 7 hours and 11 minutes looking at a screen every day…that’s more time than we spend sleeping! What in the hell is wrong with us? https://www.comparitech.com/tv-streaming/screen-time-statistics/#:~:text=According%20to%20data%20from%20DataReportal,of%20screen%20time%20per%20day.

    https://news.gallup.com/poll/166553/less-recommended-amount-sleep.aspx#:~:text=Americans%20currently%20average%206.8%20hours,nine%20hours%20sleep%20for%20adults.

I realize that our phones, tablets, and laptops are filled with endless wonder, but so are our brains, homes, and the people around us. And again, I’m not a technology Nazi, nor am I proposing some stupid, unattainable goal like “cut your screen time in half by 2022.” I always advise people to start small and easy, and if you like it and feel comfortable, keep the trend going. There’s a reason Alcoholics anonymous has a 5% rate of success…advising people to quit something they’re addicted to is asinine and almost unachievable. Teaching them to slowly cut down on their vice of choice, like the HAMS alcohol reduction system does, produces a success rate 10 times that of going cold turkey. https://www.npr.org/2014/03/23/291405829/with-sobering-science-doctor-debunks-12-step-recovery

    https://dualdiagnosis.org/drug-addiction/recovery-abstinence-vs-moderation/

So, I propose we start with your poop. Long ago, before we had devices in our pockets that were a gateway to the world, people used to sit on the toilet with their thoughts. Oh, sure, along the way a few simpletons added in magazines or newspapers while they were on the crapper, but we all know they weren’t really reading whatever they were looking at… they were contemplating their lives, as they should. For one thing, I’ve never understood why taking a crap needed to be an event…sit down, poop, wipe, leave. Other than hiding from your kids, there is no reason to spend more than 3 minutes going doo-doo, plus, it’s physically bad for you. There’s a reason I’m the only person I know who has never had hemorrhoids…sitting too long on the toilet is the number one cause of such! Plus, a dude’s rectum fell out a couple of years ago because he spent too long on the crapper!... But I digress. https://www.dollarshaveclub.com/content/story/sitting-toilet-long-will-wreck-butt

    https://www.menshealth.com/health/a17046217/chinese-man-rectal-prolapse-sitting-on-toilet/

Imagine, just for a moment, sitting on the toilet, doing nothing. No scrolling, clicking, or messaging. Just you and your brain. I realize that this is terrifying for many people, mainly because they spend their entire lives trying to avoid introspection, but that’s all part of our societal problems as well. Taking inventory of your day, your relationships, and even your life, is a good thing, and there’s no better place than the toilet. Your friends can wait a few minutes, as can your social media, your calendar, and even your Amazon order of the day (which reminds me that I need to order dog food…but not while I’m sitting on the toilet!

If you happen to be one of those sociopaths who insists on being on the crapper for 15 minutes or more, then again, I advise you to start small. Take that handy little device into the bathroom with you and set its’ timer for 5 minutes, then put it down and wait…and while you do, contemplate your life, while looking forward to the reward of submerging yourself back into the toxic world that awaits you on the other end of that fine piece of electronics as soon as it reaches :00 and makes that hideous sound most of us equate to being awoken from a deep slumber.

I promise you that this could be a life-altering event. By not being distracted by endless choices, you may learn a little something about yourself. You may even come to realize that your compulsion to sit in the bathroom for an unhealthy amount of time is both dangerous and disgusting. Either way, resolve today that you will turn your poo time into “you” time. You’re welcome.

    Rob's Soapbox - I'm Old, You're Stupid Aug 15, 2021
    Show notes

The endless dance in American society is that of the old and the young thinking equally as disparagingly of each other. Kids these days are rude, awkward, lazy, weak, entitled, selfish, tech-obsessed snowflakes who have no work ethic. Old people, by the way, are now defined essentially as everyone over the age of 45 (since the absolute oldest millennials are turning 40 this year, 40 can’t be old…unless you’re in Generation Z, then old people begin being old at 30, and you’re elderly if you’re over 50). Old people are mean, out of touch, bigots, who destroyed the economy a decade and a half ago, making life far much harder than it had to be, and like to walk around reminiscing about “the good old days,” which is easy to do since they destroyed the planet that other generations will never get to enjoy, and they’re just generally slow and in the way.

Let’s establish first that age is both a number and a mindset. My co-host Dawn has been in her 50’s mentally since she was in her twenties, while my 90-year-old father is, and always has been in his early 40’s in regards to his outlook, attitude, and approach to life. Acting old and being old are two entirely different things and often determine whether a person whose age is a certain number is “cool for an old person,” or is simply “old.”

The difference is, however, that at some point, you can’t physically hide that you’re aging. While there are plenty of creams, potions, serums, and procedures available these days, along with endless information about how we can better treat our bodies along the way to slow the effects of aging, it still shows. Jennifer Aniston and Halle Berry are often cited as two examples of women who don’t look their age. True, and were they not famous, (which allows us to know that their exact ages are 52 and 55 respectively), and we saw them in public for the first time we would no doubt say “wow, what a couple of beautiful older women.” John Stamos, Rob Lowe, Tom Cruise, and Steve Carell certainly look younger than the traditional expectation of a man in his late 50’s (Stamos, Lowe, and Carell are 57 and Cruise is 59…FIFTY-NINE! Maybe there is something to that Scientoxicity stuff). The truth is, though, that if they weren’t famous, each one of them would be viewed by a total stranger as being “an attractive man for his age,” or a “good-looking older man.” And it isn’t because we watch celebrities age and do an A-B comparison…it’s because all of the procedures and potions in the world can’t hide the weathering our bodies absorb. We’re no different than wood…you can weather protect it properly and by the book, and instead of ten years, you’ll get 40 out of it. But at 40, it will inevitably show signs of rot and decay that will continue no matter what you do until it merely crumbles to dust…just like us.

This is how and why Ageism remains the last acceptable prejudice in America…and yes, I know comedian Bill Maher has been saying that for over a decade, so all credit to him for both the phrase and legitimacy of the thought. While bigotry and prejudice will remain a part of the human condition in perpetuity, amongst agreed-upon social stigmas and attitudes, making fun of peoples’ ages is the only one that gets almost zero pushback, with very rare exceptions. When someone who has crossed whatever that threshold for you is in terms of the calculus between your age at the time and the age over which anyone is old, says something that you don’t agree with, it’s as simple as “well you’re just old,” and people just nod their head, as if to say, “yeah, those are just two different generations disagreeing. It happens.” But that’s both simplistic and wrong. They didn’t merely disagree, the older person was dismissed entirely because of their age, as though that’s an acceptable way to end an argument. It would never, and should never, be okay to end a discussion on financial prosperity and affluence with a black person by saying, “well you’re black, you’re never going to understand.” If you were lecturing someone about long hours and a solid work ethic, ending that lecture with “why am I wasting my time saying this to a Mexican,” you should not garner a knowing head nod from all who heard it.

This, by the way, is nothing new for me. There’s another thing we do when we’re young…we dismiss someone who has gotten older as merely trying to “hold on to their youth,” or we don’t even listen to what they are saying about life because we’re just old, as though that means old people are suddenly of no value at all. I turn 50 next month, but I’ve been speaking and writing about this for years, hoping to change at least a few hearts and minds, with little provable success. I recognized early on in life that the people who had what I wanted, whether it be financial, emotional, psychological, or material, were all people older than me. Rather than dismissing them, as most of my peers did, I sidled up and learned. Who better to show me how to get to where I want to be than someone who is already there? If I’m lost in a forest and a 25-year-old says “I think it’s over this way. I’ve never been that way, but I’m pretty sure,” while a 65-year-old says “I’ve spent most of my life in these trees, I’ll show you the way,” trust me, I’m following the “old man.”

I made a commitment to myself to stay true to the understanding that people of all ages and generations have value and things to offer and mocking their various shortcomings will not help me improve as a person, which is my ultimate goal. When I was younger, I did my best to not dismiss someone’s ideas merely because they were a generation or more ahead of me, especially since I hated it when I was dismissed for being young, inexperienced, or immature with no validity to the sentiment other than trying to hurt me.

As a guy about to be 50, I’m now right in the middle…People both a generation older and younger are major parts of my life, and while I notice when those younger are making the same mistakes I made, I try to remember how important those mistakes are to make, and they must travel that journey their way, and without me telling them what they’re doing wrong (unless they ask, at which point I know they’ll most likely not listen, but I will at least offer my perspective). When I notice that someone a generation older than me is frustrated by the way young people talk or how sensitive they are, and how they’re “ruining everything,” I try to remember that every older generation since the dawn of time has said that, and I don’t possess their additional couple decades of experience. I also sometimes remind them that my generation is the one that created and raised the generation they now say is ruining everything, so maybe we should blame the right group of people…or maybe, we should stop all of this.

“Respect the elderly,” is one of my most loathed phrases. Why not “respect everyone?” Since that will never happen, might I suggest “don’t disrespect the elderly merely because they’re older?” It’s a lot for a bumper sticker and today’s American attention span, so I know it’ll never take off, but it was worth a shot.

Perhaps the most common, lazy, go to put down of those “older” is they just don’t get it. Old people DON’T get it, when it relates to the appeal of sitting in front of a tv pretending to kill people on video games for hours on end, much like the young rarely get why old people think sitting around for hours on end playing cards with each other is fun.

But, what old people do get, that the young don’t…is life; and there’s nothing young people hate hearing more than that because they’re convinced that they have it all figured out…which is ironic, since we think we know everything as teenagers, and by 25 we’re laughing at how immature we were and much we’ve grown and changed. By 40 we’re sayings things like “I wish 40-year-old me could talk to 25-year-old me,” and yet we can’t for the life of us apply that to people 2 or 3 times our age in regards to seeking them out for wisdom.

And that’s what’s missing from all of this; wisdom. As the aforementioned Bill Maher said recently tackling this subject yet again, you’re beautiful when you’re young…when you’re old, you’re wise…and wisdom isn’t something that you can just Google. In fact. If you did, you’d get only the definition, which is: the quality of having experience, knowledge, and good judgment; the quality of being wise.

In doing some research for this Soapbox, I came across an article entitled “Why Older People Have Always Trashed Young People,” and the answer to the headline is essentially…fear. Once we recognize that we are now “older,” we become afraid…of everything, was the premise. We’re terrified of change, our mortality, becoming irrelevant, etc. After finishing the piece, I sat staring at it with my eyes half-closed pondering this assertion, and decided to research the person who wrote it. His name is Jason Feifer, and when he wrote it, he was 37. Aahhhhhhhhhh…yes…37. That’s the sweet spot; when we’re in stage 3 of knowing that we have life all figured out and yet we’re still relevant and important because, hey, at least we aren’t 40!! I never lived it, but I’ve seen the mindset play out countless times. I know nothing of Jason Feifer, but I would guess he’s the type who is terrified of turning 50 because at that point, for him, it’s all over, and he joins the class of people that is be pitied because they’re all just afraid of fading away. https://gen.medium.com/why-older-people-have-always-trashed-young-people-8f918529009a

One month from turning 50, I’m the best me ever. My company is thriving financially at record levels, and the RAD RADIO show is more popular than it has ever been. I’m married to my perfect mate (a generation younger than me, BTW), have amazing friendships, and worry about nothing. Literally, I have zero anxiety, pretty much about anything ever…because I have the experience, knowledge, and good judgment to know that life, and I will be fine. The only reason everything in my life is so good is because of all of that I have lived, combined with remaining open to new, better, and different ways of thinking and doing things that people younger than me can teach and show me. And of course, I never hesitate to pick up a phone and call someone born 15 years or more before me and ask for advice and perspective. So when a millennial or member of generation Z doesn’t like or agree with something I say or do, and can’t offer any sort of objection to it other than “you’re just old,” I embrace it. You’re right, youngster, I am old, and you’re stupid. That may sound harsh, but the truth is that a well-adjust, self-aware younger person would never think that it was acceptable to dismiss the opinion of someone they were disagreeing with merely citing their age. It’s quite literally a stupid thought and tactic and identical to the racist examples given earlier. You see, like Farmer’s Insurance, I know a thing or two because I’ve seen a thing or two...and the only difference between my self-confidence and yours’ is that mine exists and is legitimate.

    Episode 13 - RAD pROBcast - Money Buys Happierness - Part 2 Aug 13, 2021
    Show notes

It’s the second in our series “Money Buys Happierness,” and by popular demand we begin with the long form answer as to why I prefer leasing over buying vehicles, including the rare exceptions to the rule. From there, we discuss Investments that aren’t actually investments, but people often claim they are. Most notably, morons who say that putting in a pool will “greatly increase the value of the home when we go to sell it,” a total fallacy. We talk about the difference between spending our money on things we enjoy, versus actually investing, and why the two of them almost never match up (which is ok). Boats, pools, and collectibles, are all fun to someone, but almost none of us knows someone who is independently wealthy from selling off their Beanie Babies.

    Rob's Soapbox - Care Less Aug 08, 2021
    Show notes

The answer to almost all of your questions related to contentment, happiness, and living your best life, is summed up in two words: Care less.

Not careless, as in “behave in a haphazard manner,” but care…less.

Before I continue, a quick aside…stop saying “I could care less,” when you are trying to convey to someone that you are bored, have no interest in what is happening, or are incapable of giving two blanks. If you COULD care less, then you care, because you have some still to give up. Once you reach the point where you COULDN’T care less you have stopped caring and have nothing at all left to surrender, for you have already allowed all caring to escape you. Please make proper adjustments moving forward…or don’t, I couldn’t care less.

Almost everyone’s hang ups in life, whether it be related to intimate relationships, friendships, finances, or even hobbies and interests, is that they care too much. “hang ups,” in this context is meant as a term that holds us back and keeps us from reaching our true full potential because we are “hung up,” on something that is, at best, distracting us, and literally, at worst, standing in the way of what we truly want and need.

What is it, you ask, that you care too much about? Other people…and their opinions, thoughts, judgments, and feelings. Get over that, and I promise you, you’ll be freed from the shackles that bind you.

In the military, there is a method known as “breaking.” A new recruit must first be broken as a human being so that he or she can then be rebuilt into an ideal soldier. This is what you must do to yourself if you want to feel absolute contentment; you must break yourself all the way down when it comes to caring about anyone else other than yourself. Once you do, you’ll find how easy it is to build yourself back up and learn the difference between caring FOR other people and ABOUT a very select few. That latter group will be your “inner circle,” and they will have to earn their way into the circle with each and every interaction you have with them, all of the time, every day. Everyone else gets to go to hell and have no space in your head or heart.

Too many people, sadly, have to start this process with total strangers. Don’t get me wrong, I know the feeling, but I haven’t felt it since I was 17 years old. When I see or hear about middle aged men and women being concerned with people they don’t know, and have never met, judging them for the items in their grocery cart, I feel nothing but pity for them. There’s a reason I mentioned being 17 the last time this was an issue for me…being self-conscious about the judgments of others that you don’t know is what happens in high school. In other words, it’s childish; and it’s time grow up.

The first time I went to a therapist I was convinced that when I walked through the mall with my girlfriend people were laughing at me, making fun of me, and wondering how and why such a beautiful girl was holding my hand. I had purchased my first brand new vehicle, with my own money; it was a Toyota Pick-up truck, (the last style before they made the Tacoma) and I should have been beaming with pride that I had accomplished that at the age of 17, but instead, I was convinced that every single person on the road looked at me in the driver’s seat and thought “well he clearly didn’t earn that, must be his dad’s truck.” These horrible voices of self-loathing were endless. It took only three sessions with my therapist before he was able to make me realize that it was very possible that the people I was so worried about were saying the exact opposite of my thoughts. Perhaps they were complimenting me on my gorgeous girlfriend or thinking how amazing it was that I had worked so hard at such a young age to afford my own brand new truck. Or maybe, they didn’t even notice that I was alive. He challenged me to notice how often I judged, thought about or cared how total strangers looked or acted and it dawned on me that most of the time, I barely even noticed their existence. Maybe life wasn’t all about me.

We ended after our sixth session, which was an hour of discussing the possibility that maybe my initial fears were true. Maybe other people were saying and thinking all of those horrible things about me. He made me feel it and relive it. He even played a recording of people I had never met saying things like “that Rob guy is a total fraud. What a joke. Loser.” To my recollection the recording had 5 or 6 different voices and went on for about 2 total minutes. When he stopped it, he just looked at me, raised his eyebrows, and waited…three seconds passed and I realized he was looking for a response so I gave it to him, verbatim: “What do I care? Who the fuck are they and why do they matter to me?” He smirked and said “exactly.” By the way, he was also a teacher at a local college and it turned out that those voices were some of his students who he had asked to say those things after using me as an example to his class of the type of patient they may see. He assured me that he had never identified me beyond my first name and I told him I was flattered which garnered a strong “huh?” from him. I remember saying “well, I’m either one of the best patients you’ve ever had or one of the most screwed up…in both cases I clearly stood out and made an impression and I’m good with that. He laughed, we shook hands, and I left a new man.

I often joke that he created a monster. He took a kid who on the outside appeared to have it all going on; I was a good student, popular, I had a job, I had a girlfriend, I had lots of friends, and I drove a new truck that I bought. On the inside, that kid didn’t believe that’s what other people were seeing AND he cared. In six sessions, I became whatever it is that I still am today. Some call it arrogant, others confident. I’m sure there are plenty of other adjectives for me as well…I just don’t care at all what they are or who is saying them.

Once you free yourself of writing your story for what total strangers are thinking about you, the actual hard work begins. Applying the same standard to family and friends, and most noteworthy, people you choose as romantic partners in life, is a much harder task, but absolutely necessary as quickly as possible. I have only a handful of shorts, pants and shirts that my wife doesn’t like. She makes fun of me, in a playful way, when I wear them…but guess what? I still wear them. Does that mean that I don’t care what my wife thinks? Not exactly, but kinda. You cannot turn over your power to other people…ANY other people. If you like something or someone, pursue it, regardless of what anyone else says about it. Why in the world would you not play golf just because your wife thinks it’s a game for dorks? If you truly enjoy listening to Barry Manilow, or taking hot baths, why would you not do those things just because your guy friends say it makes you girly? Or fruity? Or whatever…and perhaps even worse, why would you do them in secret and deny who you are to the people in your world? If the people that you call the closest, can’t accept you for who you truly are, then you need to re-evaluate why you hold them so closely.

That, of course, is a two-way street in real relationships. My role in the lives of the people I care about the most is not to change them, or judge the choices that they make (at least not out loud to their faces, unless they ask). Rather, it is to accept them as they are, for that’s the reason I liked/loved them in the first place. I chose them for reasons…leave those reasons alone, and help them grow. Sometimes they grow in a direction that changes them in ways that makes them no longer someone I want to hold closely, so I let them go. That’s all part of life. People come, people go, people change…and people should change…and sometimes those changes result in the aforementioned people going. Who’s the one person that is still and always in the picture? Me, so I better like myself the most, first.

The absolute hardest category for most people is family. Learning and accepting that being related to someone does not give them any sort of authority over your life is the most difficult thing for most people to do…which is why most people never do it. I’ve watched the endless suffering of countless people over the years, all caused by their own inability to recognize the toxicity caused by the people they choose to call “family.” Yes, you read that correctly, family is a CHOICE as an adult. And that’s the rub, isn’t it? Earlier I wrote that the reasons my friends are in my life is that I chose them, which is true. I was going about my life, met them somehow, got to know them, and ultimately realized they had a lot to offer as a friend, and I wanted to offer what I have to them in return. Ultimately, relationships are merely transactions in many ways.

When you are brought into this world, you are given no choices. You are related to a group of people that you are then quite literally forced to be around for nearly two decades at least. Many of those individuals make decisions for you, tell you when you’re right and wrong, make rules you have to follow, and teach you things like love and punishment, often in very destructive ways. Regardless of that experience, once you become an independent adult, you quite literally no longer NEED any of them; it’s time to choose. Sadly, most people decide instead that idiotic expressions like “blood is thicker than water,” and “nothing’s more important than family,” are actual dogma. That second one is pretty close to true, but it requires redefining the word “family.”

Rather than your family being people that you are related or married to, your family should be the people in your life whose wants, needs, and desires are as important to you as your own. That’s the sociological definition of love, and it’s powerful as hell if you let it sink in. Your “family” members, of course, have to feel the same way in return. In addition your “family,” should be comprised of people that make you feel good, welcomed, and comfortable as you are, who you are, and in whatever state you are in at the time. These same people should also be those you can always rely on, for anything, whether it be a comforting ear, or some needed harsh (and asked for) advice or judgments.

Perhaps most importantly, “family,” shouldn’t hurt. You’re able to disagree, you’re able to speak freely, and you’re able to have differing thoughts, opinions and judgments…and through all of it, neither person hurts or gets hurt.

That last one is also tough for most people. At some point, I wish for everyone to learn that if another person gets hurt by something honest that you say, think, or feel, that is their problem, not yours. If you acted with no malice, and spoke candidly, the other person’s reaction to your words or actions is on them, and them alone.

Now go back to the checklist of who should be in your family and apply all of those items to the people you know. How many of them are truly family under our new definition? I have a small but wonderful family and a lot of friends (second tier) and tons of friendly acquaintances. I’m related by blood to dozens of people that I know are alive. Fewer than three of them are my family, and most I rarely talk to for they lack most, if not all, of the criteria needed to be in my family. Which doesn’t make them bad people, it makes them unqualified for the job that I need them to do, and since I put my needs first…NEXT!

If, and when, you are ever able to truly free yourself from caring about whatever anyone else thinks or says about you, you will find that the path is so clear as to who you want to give that gift to. That’s what it is, a gift. You are offering to someone the ability to hurt you, trusting that they won’t, but knowing that if they do, you’ll survive, no matter how deep the pain may be. When you stop caring, your caring becomes a prized asset, offered only to the most special people in your life, and when you choose those people correctly, you have an amazing existence. When you realize that you chose poorly, or that a person has betrayed that gift you gave them (and it will happen), you will simply un-choose them, feel the hurt, and place them in the “I couldn’t care less” pile.

Rob's Soapbox - Rabbit Season! Duck Season! Aug 01, 2021
    Show notes

It’s official…we’re living in a cartoon. There’s no other way to accurately describe it any longer. Just stay with me for a minute, because while none of this will admittedly solve anything, it is laughably beyond comical just how stupid we have become. If you have children, have ever spent time with children, or once were a child (this should cover every living soul on planet Earth), then you can relate to what it’s like to try to pin them down when you’ve caught them in a lie. They are masters at trying to change the subject, distract you, and explaining how they didn’t say what they just said. Most notably, they will not only say things to your face that are provably untrue, they will continue to just make things up to further bolster the credibility of the original lie. And they just keep going and going and going.I remember a doozy I tried to pull on my mom when I was around 10 years old. I grew up as what we called a “latchkey kid,” which, to the horror of too many of you means a child who returns to an empty home after school with no supervision because their parents are away at work. Yes, somehow I lived to tell my story.Part of my responsibilities in exchange for being trusted with this independence were daily chores, which were left for me via a note on the dining room table. I recall it was usually 3-5 things per day like unload the dishwasher, vacuum a room or two, do some dusting, put away laundry, sweep the front porch (I used the hose because it was more fun), clean some windows, etc. In addition, I made my own meals before Little League practice and of course was expected to get my homework done. One day, all of my friends were free and had organized a baseball game in the park in our neighborhood right after school. I raced home, changed, and blasted through my chores half-assed. So half-assed, that I didn’t water the plants on the front deck. Totally forgot.I got home two hours later, right before my parents, and set myself up at the dining room table, diligently doing my homework and looking like the perfect son. To be clear, there was no rule that I couldn’t have played baseball, or that I had to be home before they were, it just worked out that way on this day. The agreement was simply that I had to have my chores done before they came home, and everything else, from play time to homework, was up to my time management. After being home for a few minutes my mother asked me if I had watered the plants…and rather than simply say “oh shoot, mom I totally forgot, I am so sorry, I will do that right now,” the conversation went more like this:MOM: Did you water the plants like your chore list said?ROBBY: yeah, of courseMOM: You’re lying to meROBBY: No I’m notMOM: Robert Edmund (middle name…bad sign)…don’t you dare lie to me (I believe at this moment her index finger was 1 centimeter away from my nose).ROBBY: I’m not lyingMOM: why is the hose in the exact same place, laying the exact same way it was when I left this morning?ROBBY: Because I was careful to put it back the way I found it like you’ve taught me (so lame).MOM: Why is there not a drop of water anywhere on the deck between plants?ROB: Because I was careful? (asked as a question, with a mild smirk, realizing I was losing, but hoping my cuteness might get her to break…no such luck)Silent stare…this was my next chance to come clean…and so of course:ROBBY: Actually, I kinked the hose after I watered each plant so no water would drip on the deck when I moved between plants.MOM: Why is the dirt bone dry?ROBBY: Because it’s hotAt this point, she grabbed me by the hand, took me out front, and shoved my index finger all the way into the dirt of one of the plants…it was so dry it was dusty. I then got a very spirited lecture about lying in general, let alone my mother, character, ethics, how a man’s word is all he has, and I was probably reminded that my grandfather was a marine and he didn’t fight for my freedom so that I could lie (even though technically that’s erroneous since lying is covered under the First Amendment…but I digress.Your country is being governed and run by little Robby. At every single, solitary turn, you are lied to, and then another lie is told to make you believe the first one, and then things are literally made up, with flimsy or no facts to support them, and on and on and on it goes. It’s rabbit season, then it’s duck season, and it never ends.17 months ago you were told to lockdown for two weeks to stop the spread so that hospitals could prepare for the inevitable onslaught of Coronavirus cases. Two weeks became four, then 10. You were told masks were a placebo, and then a month later, you were asked to wear a mask to protect others because we were all in this together. To protect yourself and everyone else, the most important thing was to socially distance yourself by at least 6 feet. Also, wipe down counters, groceries, door knobs, and everything that anyone anywhere ever touches, and make sure you check everyone’s temperature as they enter any establishment that is allowed to be open.Memorial Day weekend hit and you had the audacity to want to leave your house and see people for the first time in 70 days, and less than a month later you were told that everyone had to wear masks to stop the spread and protect others, and remember, social distancing was still the most important thing, along with singing Happy Birthday while you washed your hands. Oh, and by the way, those temperature checks we’ve been doing? Yeah, those are worthless. Dr. Anthony Fauci announced in Mid-August (a year ago) that there was no need to check anyone’s temperature in an effort to detect Covid. Oh yeah, we’re calling it Covid now. Covid-19, to be exact. Oh, one more thing…when you go out to eat, to have to wear a mask until you sit down. Once you’re sitting down, Covid is no longer a threat. https://www.forbes.com/sites/lisettevoytko/2020/08/13/fauci-says-coronavirus-temperature-checks-notoriously-inaccurate/?sh=414fb41b33f0A couple months later, as we rolled through the second wave of the virus spreading during summer, we were told to “hang in there,” reminded we were all in this together, and that everything would be better once the vaccine arrived at the end of the year. Just a little longer, they said. Oh, and those masks? Guess what? They protect you too! In fact, just to be safe, wear goggles and/or a face shield IN ADDITION to your mask! https://abcnews.go.com/US/dr-fauci-wear-goggles-eye-shields-prevent-spread/story?id=72059055Fall hit and despite all data showing that an average of 90% of all Americans were complying with mask wearing, there was yet another surge on its’ way. People were advised to wear face masks while having sex, and while we had our sports back, in the rare case you could attend a game, you had to wear a mask in the outdoor stadiums (unless of course you had food, and then it was fine). We were also told at this time that Covid was perhaps spreading through apartment toilet pipes, infecting other residents. https://abcnews.go.com/Politics/89-americans-wear-masks-public-coronavirus-pandemic-persists/story?id=71455062https://www.the-sun.com/news/1280090/university-georiga-students-wear-coronavirus-masks-sex/https://nypost.com/2020/08/27/covid-19-can-waft-through-toilets-into-other-apartments-study/By the time January hit, the vaccines were slowly rolling out, and we were told there was light at the end of the tunnel. Just hold on a little bit longer and this will all be over! Also, stop wiping down surfaces because it’s meaningless and worthless…while you’re at it, though, wear two masks, because if one works, logic dictates that two is even better! (Fauci actually said that, just like little Robby would). https://www.cnn.com/2021/04/19/health/cdc-covid-guidelines-cleaning/index.htmlhttps://www.webmd.com/lung/news/20210126/double-masking-makes-common-sense-fauci-saysIn May, vaccinated people were told they were free of masks! The vaccines are so effective, and so many people were getting vaccinated, that it was now safe to no longer wear a mask once you were vaccinated. You can’t get sick from the virus, and you can’t spread it either, because your viral load is so low. See? We told you if you’d just stick with us and hang in there, we would all get through this together! And then, last week, you were told to put a mask back on, even if you’re vaccinated. In fact, if the CDC has its’ way, 70% of the country should be under a mask mandate as of this writing. https://www.webmd.com/lung/news/20210730/indoor-masking-needed-almost-70-percent-us-counties-cdc-data Why, you ask? Well…ummm…geee…well, you see, we have new scientific data that shows in rare instances some vaccinated people may spread the virus. Rabbit season says the vaccines are a miracle and work…Duck season says even if you’re vaccinated, you have to wear a mask, causing many people to say…”then why get it, it obviously doesn’t work?”Rare, some, and may…that’s science! For days people demanded that the CDC produce this “new scientific data,” and they finally did on Friday (the day known by all to bury bad news since very few people are paying attention). Despite multiple studies, including one done by the CDC, showing that vaccinated people who get breakthrough Covid infections have between 40-60% less viral loads (thus making it almost impossible to infect someone else), the CDC has completely changed course, made everyone even more confused, and taken away all of the incentive to get vaccinated, all because of ONE incident over the Fourth of July in Massachusetts in which 469 vaccinated people got Covid. None died, and only 4 wound up in the hospital, but wait…it gets even better. Of those 469, 84 of them were found to have viral loads identical to those unvaccinated people with Covid. That’s it…that’s your science. Can’t you just hear little Robby explaining this? https://www.webmd.com/vaccines/covid-19-vaccine/news/20210702/study-says-vaccinated-people-who-get-covid-carry-less-virushttps://www.politico.com/news/2021/07/30/cdc-releases-data-behind-latest-mask-guidelines-501791So…umm, you see, 84 people out of 469 had lots of stuff in their nose that may be able to give the disease to a bunch of people who for whatever reason have chosen not to get vaccinated and so that means that, like, it could happen, and since it could happen, we have to stop it from happening by having people protect people that don’t want to be protected because SCIENCE.Of course, all of this also ignores people who have natural immunity to the virus from having already contracted Covid. For some reason, they are NEVER mentioned or counted. It also completely betrays centuries of common sense medicine. One thing President Biden has right is that the media is foolishly and typically highlighting breakthrough cases of Covid amongst known vaccinated people in a way that is making people further question the effectiveness of having immunity. It’s sickening, no pun intended. Additionally, if you had Covid, or have gotten the vaccine, the death rate from breakthrough infections is 0.0005 percent. To put that in perspective, your chance of dying from a lightning strike is .0007 percent, and your chance of dying from a seasonal flu is 0.1 percent. If you’re vaccinated, you have a much greater chance of dying from a hornet, wasp or bee string, a dog attack, a car crash, drowning, sunstroke, or choking on food than you do of dying from covid-19. If someone doesn’t have immunity, that’s on them, not on those who are vaccinated. It’s time to drop this “I am my brother’s keeper” garbage and get back to living.A friend of mine recently made this observation: What ever happened to social distancing, temperature checks and contact tracing, while masks remain the ultimate weapon against Covid? Could it be because there’s no money in the other three? After all, mask sales must be skyrocketing as a result of the CDC saying all kids K-12 should mask at school again, since obviously kids need to stay stylish and hip and get new masks as part of their back-to-school shopping. All of this, mind you, is occurring as the United States is nowhere near a surge of Covid anything. As of July 31st, only 5% of all people hospitalized in America have Covid, and in all of ICU’s, only 12% of the patients in the entire country are covid positive. https://coronavirus.jhu.edu/data/hospitalization-7-day-trend/inpatient-capacityhttps://coronavirus.jhu.edu/data/hospitalization-7-day-trendAs a meme that’s going around says, “To defeat Delta variant, experts recommend doing all the things that didn’t work the first time”Meanwhile, in the United Kingdom, where they are now two weeks into zero Covid restrictions, the Delta Variant has peaked and cases are plummeting, much to the chagrin of scientists and experts who predicted they would reach 200,000 cases per day…they never got above 54,000. Throughout the pandemic, England has been a month ahead of the U.S…what happened there, happened here weeks later. Could it be that we’re, oh, I don’t know, overreacting? Again? Of course not, because as the Godfather of doom himself, Dr. Fauci, said just this weekend “Things are going to get worse.” https://news.yahoo.com/u-ks-delta-wave-seems-to-have-peaked-sooner-than-expected-could-the-same-thing-happen-in-the-us-090008129.htmlhttps://abcnews.go.com/Politics/fauci-warns-things-worse-covid/story?id=79192069Oh my stars! Might we have 10% of all hospitalized people with Covid? EEEK!Rabbit season says our way out of this are vaccinations, duck season says that nothing is off the table, including more lockdowns, and the way to avoid those lockdowns is wear a mask. https://abc7news.com/covid-19-bay-area-lock-down-bob-wachter-ucsf/10913092/Carrot! Stick! Carrot! Stick! Rabbit season! Duck season! Please, for the love of god will someone get Elmer Fudd to just blow my damn bill off, already?!?!See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.
