We talk about the potential economic effects of student loan payments with Joe Reinke aka FIXBUX.
With an estimated 18 billion dollars a month being taken out of the economy due to student loan payments, economists and stock market experts are bracing for a recession.
They believe that we are already in a recession, even though it may not feel like it. This could lead to a decrease in the stock market at the end of the year.
However, politicians may use this as an opportunity to blame the recession on student loan payments, when in reality it was going to happen anyways due to rising interest rates and unaffordable homes.

Dr. Andy Wicks is a physical therapist, educator, podcaster, and connoisseur of fine nugae paternae. He is currently on faculty at Grand Valley State University and the host of the APTA Michigan’s Waves podcast.
My goal is three-fold: to banish polos and khakis from the PT clinic; to have something, anything, named after me before I retire; and to get people to stop using the tired adage of "PT means Pain and Torture."
“If nothing else, just be kind to them.”
In this episode, we are joined by special guests Nicole and Stephanie, renowned as The Note Ninjas, who are experienced occupational and physical therapists. They share their expertise and provide valuable support in documentation and skilled care for their fellow PTs and OTs. Their goal is to empower therapists in their clinical settings, reduce stress, and improve documentation efficiency.
During our conversation with The Note Ninjas, we delve into various important topics that will greatly benefit therapists and individuals interested in healthcare. We begin by discussing the challenges of documentation and how to avoid burnout. The Note Ninjas provide insightful advice on simplifying documentation, utilizing templates for efficiency, and focusing on functional goals. They also address the common issue of overthinking daily notes and emphasize the importance of highlighting the therapist's skilled contributions rather than the activities themselves.
Another area of focus is facilitating functional treatments. The Note Ninjas explore strategies for patient engagement, promoting patient-centered practice, and the benefits of evidence-based articles to support interventions. They also touch upon the apprehension some occupational therapists may have regarding balance work and the role of physical therapists in toileting.
Collaboration between OTs and PTs without duplicating services is also emphasized. The Note Ninjas stress the significance of effective communication between the two disciplines, offer insights into common areas where therapists tend to overthink and provide examples distinguishing skilled versus unskilled activities. They highlight how collaboration enhances patient care and adds meaning to the therapists' work.
Throughout the episode, Nicole and Stephanie provide practical tips and strategies that will help therapists overcome documentation challenges, enhance their clinical practice, and ultimately improve patient outcomes.
So why should you invest your valuable time in listening to this episode? The Note Ninjas offers a straightforward answer: because they simplify documentation for you! By sharing their expertise and experiences, they alleviate the anxiety often associated with therapy documentation. They provide practical solutions and guidance that empower you to streamline your documentation process and focus on what truly matters – delivering excellent care to your patients.

As dance medicine professionals, we know that working with dancers is about more than just providing specific treatments or using certain equipment. It's about understanding the unique needs of artistic athletes and providing comprehensive care that meets those needs.
In this episode, we're discussing important considerations for those providing on-site care to dancers backstage. Who are you working with? How do you ensure you get paid for your services? What are you offering, and how do you communicate effectively with your clients?

Keri Ammons, Director of Talent Acquisition at ATI PT. In today's episode, we're going to talk about the key factors that every physical therapist should consider when looking for a new job.
Keri explains that finding a place where you can grow with the company is essential. Look for a company that offers various paths within the organization to satisfy different interests. Whether it's IT, project management, research, or HR, there should be enough room for career growth.
She also notes that the highest offer isn't always the best offer. While money is a significant factor, don't overlook other important things like a 401k, medical benefits, and time away. It's important to consider the entire package before accepting an offer.
Mentorship is also critical in a new job. Keri encourages candidates to ask companies to define their mentorship program and if there's a structured approach. Knowing what mentorship means to you and what you're looking for is important in finding a company that aligns with your values.
Finally, Keri talks about work-life balance. Patients need us to be flexible, and clinicians need to find a schedule that works for them. Whether it's getting out at 5 every day to make it to your rec softball league on Tuesday or working on Saturdays because that's when you have childcare, finding a work schedule that aligns with your needs is crucial.
Keri ends the episode by highlighting that ATI PT is one of the leaders in clinical research within the PT profession. With all 900+ ATI clinics placing in the 100th percentile in CMS's Merit-Based Incentive Program for the second consecutive year, it's clear that ATI PT is a great place to work.
If you love your job, you won’t work a day in your life. We’ve all heard that quote before, but sometimes work is work and your co-workers and your supervisor make (or break) the environment. Tina describes what she desired in a leader and how she worked hard to embody that for her team. 18 years later, it is safe to say Tina loves her job.
In this episode, Dr. Burriesci chats with Dr. Fields, the physical therapy supervisor and residency director of the University of Michigan Health. They burrow in deep on leadership ideals and what that looks like on the “Cards” team. They discuss how Tina has helped foster great culture in the PT department and across the hospital system. She describes acknowledging the “small things,” while also always having her therapist’s back and empowering the strengths and knowledge of her staff. The goal is to provide great care and make an impact on patients’ lives, while also being safe in a very medically complex environment. The only way to do that is by practicing at the top of your license. She states, “You can be the Ferarri or you can be the Pinto….”
They dance through ideals, discuss specifics on competencies, spend time discussing the complexities of specific patient populations and they round out the episode by talking about what the University of Michigan’s Cardiovascular and Pulmonary residency program looks like, including application timing, salary, and the opportunities available in the residency.

In this episode, we'll be diving into Seth Godin's thought-provoking blog post titled "Fear the Rot." As a society, we tend to focus on crises and cataclysms, which dominate our media. However, Godin argues that we should be more concerned about the rot that occurs over time.
Whether it's organizations, reputations, systems, health, investments, or even our teeth, everything decays unless we persistently work to support it. Instead of focusing on the big boom or sudden end, we need to be aware of the slow decay that is happening around us.
Godin points out that even our teeth, which we take for granted, slowly decay over time. For every hockey player who loses a tooth in a game, there are millions of people who have lost teeth due to neglect over time.
So, why is it important to fear the rot? Because it's often the small things that lead to big problems. It's the neglect of small maintenance tasks that lead to the collapse of systems, organizations, and even personal health.
In this episode, we'll explore how we can avoid the rot by paying attention to the small things and doing the necessary work to maintain and improve the things that matter most to us. We'll discuss practical strategies for avoiding rot in our personal and professional lives, and how we can overcome the distractions of crises and cataclysms to focus on what really matters.
Tune in to this episode to learn more about how to fear the rot and take proactive steps to prevent it in your own life.

Jimmy and Tony Maritato In the interview, Jimmy and Tony discuss various side hustles that physical therapists can explore to potentially earn an additional $10,000 per month. They emphasize the importance of leveraging one's specialized knowledge and targeting specific niches. Some of the ideas mentioned include creating and selling digital products like courses, eBooks, or PDFs; offering consulting or coaching services to PTs, clinics, or other businesses; developing a niche blog, podcast, or YouTube channel to educate and entertain while monetizing through ads, sponsorships, or affiliate marketing; and providing concierge or "come to me" PT services for personalized care.
Additionally, they mention the concept of intrapreneurship, where physical therapists can upsell services to their current employers by identifying problems in the system and proposing solutions to improve the bottom line. This approach can lead to success and help them branch out into other businesses or opportunities. Overall, the interview emphasizes the importance of focusing on the audience, understanding their problems, and offering valuable solutions that align with the therapist's interests and expertise.

Women Can Lead
March is Women’s History month.. and back in March 2022, I was asked to help co-host a great panel of women leaders with Blake Banner from Virginia.
Now, I gotta be honest, I was a little nervous doing this. I mean I host things pretty often but this was a very specific and special event, taking place at a special time… and …. I was the only guy involved in the event.
I was nervous cause… I DIDN'T WANNA SCREW IT UP!
The purpose was to celebrate Women’s History Month.
But… that’s just the beginning,
I always look for the THEME that winds up magically emerging… that you NEVER planned on.
What I took away from our 5 guests and their VASTLY different stories was… how vastly different their stories were.
They each defined success in their end goals, and success in HOW they achieved their goals SO DIFFERENTLY.
This year’s theme was “Providing Healing, Promoting Hope.”
You get to learn from
- Carmen Elliot, VP of DEI in APTA
- Karen Godley, VP of Operations in VA of Select Physical Therapy
- Danelle Dickson, Owner of Performance Plus Physical Therapy
- Dianne Jewell, President, and CEO of Sheltering Arms Corp. and Hospital
- Elizabeth Locke, Executive Director and Associate Professor of Kean University
Did I decide to wait to release this as a podcast episode because… maybe we shouldn’t ONLY be celebrating women’s history in march?
So we’re bringing this to you now… because right NOW, feels like a great time to celebrate women.

The Important Lesson a Tree Can Teach You Today
I got stuck in a RUT.
After taking a 1.5-month hiatus from podcasting because my mom was sick, and wound up passing away it's been hard to get back.
Just to talk to people, taking the step of sharing my face, voice, words, thoughts, and emotions.
It's hard to take the first step, and the second, and the fifth...
But I saw something on a tree today that taught me a lesson... so I grabbed my mic and ran with it to make sure I could share it with you.
When you do things with a group you have a better chance of continuing. Things like exercise. So why wouldn't we want people who desperately need to exercise to join a group built around it?
Dr. Leslie Waltke talks about this idea in the form of Team Phoenix. An innovative 14-week fitness and research program in which a leadership team of multidisciplinary clinicians, triathlon coaches and volunteers encourage and assist cancer survivors to regain endurance, strength, flexibility, and overall health and wellness after cancer treatment by training for a sprint-distance triathlon.
The show took an unexpected month and a half hiatus. My mom got sick and then died in just a few months.
This left me lost, overwhelmed, confused, and sad.
This didn't go away immediately and if I'm being honest (which we get in this episode) it still hasn't.
I've been told that the worst hasn't come yet and I'm beginning to believe that.
We bring in an expert, Dr. of Clinical Psychology Jamie Hagenbaugh to help me figure this out, and maybe some of you have some advice too.

Kevin Mercier: 7- Tips to Explode Profits Selling a Physical Therapy Practice
Kevin Mercier is the Director of Strategic Development for FYZICAL Therapy & Balance Centers. Kevin believes your business is your vehicle to get what you want out of life.
Business owners should maximize the value of their practice by developing a wealthy exit strategy.
Kevin discusses how to develop an exit strategy for the physical therapy private practice owner. The biggest metric a buyer is going to look at is your EBITDA or earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation, and amortization. Timing is everything when you’re looking to exit from not only the state of the world but the state of the industry. As a seller, the most important thing you need to do is see what’s out there and get the most value for your business aside from who the buyer may be.

Low back pain remains a musculoskeletal condition with an adverse societal impact. Globally, LBP is highly prevalent and a leading cause of disability.
In the United States, LBP remains one of the most common reasons to seek health care and, along with neck pain, is the medical condition associated with the highest overall costs.
An update to the 2012 Academy of Orthopaedic Physical Therapy Clinical Practice Guideline for Low Back Pain was recently released in late 2021.
Tonight, we will talk about WHY this CPG was created, HOW it was constructed, and WHAT this recent CPG recommends for the treatment of Low Back Pain.
We want to thank the Academy of Orthopaedic Physical Therapy for bringing you this broadcast.

They each discuss the importance of ordering imaging and how this will help physical therapists move forward as primary care providers and strengthen our role and value.
Once imaging becomes passed, the barriers that are involved include the average PT comfort level, being able to order imaging judiciously, and logistically placing the ability to order imaging in your practice.

Back in 2019, we got a chance to talk to USA Rugby team member Chuck Aoki.
I’m an admitted Olympics and Paralympics GEEK so having chuck on for some cool behind-the-scenes insights was really fun for me… I did also ask him one question that had always been on my mind, but I never had the comfort level to actually ask….
Chuck was super chill and that made me comfortable enough to ask… it had to do with the terms olympian versus Paralympian.
Chuck has a CRAZY Wheel Chair Rugby resume…
Paralympic Experience
And he’s added 2020 games participant hopefully a medal this year as well and …. This year it was JUST ANNOUNCED this week, that he was 1 of 2 USA flag bearers to kick off the Tokyo games.
From a few years back in 2019 here’s my convo with USA Paralympian, Chuck Aoki.
