    Private Practice Success Stories

My name is Jena Castro-Casbon, MS CCC-SLP (of The Independent Clinician and The Private Practice Solution).

I am part of a group of private practitioners who have taken client care into our own hands.

We are skilled clinicians who pride ourselves on providing high-quality care to our clients and their families.

We are fighting against productivity requirements, administrative red tape and unnecessary restrictions.

We started our own private practices to take control of our professional and personal lives. Of our schedules. Of our incomes. Of our future.

We work hard for our clients but on our terms.

We believe in helping others – but also helping ourselves.

We’re not interested in competing with each other. We hope that we all make it.

We are successful private practitioners and these are our stories.

Thank you for taking the time to listen to this interview.

Going All In and Growing Fast with Olivia Rhoades (A Grow Your Private Practice Case Study) Jun 20, 2022
    Show notes

Sometimes you just need to go all-in on your private practice in order to achieve fast results.

In today’s episode of Private Practice Success Stories, I sat down with one of my Grow Your Private Practice students, Olivia Rhoades, to talk about her experience in the program.

We talk about what led to her decision to grow her private practice, how she differentiates her practice from others, how she made her first hire, and so much more. If you are interested in growing your private practice now or in the future and want a first-hand account from someone in the program, this episode is for you.

Olivia Rhoades is a speech-language pathologist by trade and a player at heart. To her, playtime is not an event, it’s a mindset. Every day…from the therapy room to the living room, she observes how taking a play-based approach to everything builds stronger relationships and provides the foundation for meaningful learning.

Throughout her career, she has served on committees, presented at conferences all around Michigan, and has had the privilege to help develop the communication skills of countless children. After six years working in elementary schools, she took the plunge into the world of private practice by founding Play Awhile, LLC.

At home, she’s a wife to one cute husband, momma to one cute toddler, and favorite cuddler to one cute terrier. Together, her family loves to hike, camp, bake, dance, and explore their own backyard!

A career in speech-language pathology is always fulfilling, but she is especially interested in early childhood language, AAC, communication differences related to autism, and building inclusive communities for all.

    In Today's Episode, We Discuss:

    • How Olivia made the decision to go all-in on her private practice
    • How she hired four people in her first six months
    • The way Olivia differentiates herself from other private practices
    • Nontraditional ways to grow your private practice
    • How virtual assistants can help your practice
    • The balance a private practice can give you
    • The benefits of investing in yourself

Olivia is such a great example of someone who joined one of my programs, did the work, showed up for the calls, went through the modules, and took full advantage of the programs and all they had to offer. It was so amazing to see everything she was able to accomplish in such a small amount of time.

Every decision that Olivia has made has contributed to her growth and success with her private practice. How to Minimize Risks Associated with Starting a Private Practice Jun 13, 2022
    Show notes

Ready to start your private practice but worried about the legal aspects?

You’re not alone. This is something that holds many SLPs back because they want to make sure they do it all legally but they don’t know where to start. The truth is, It can be risky to start a private practice if you don’t set it up the right way in the beginning. This is why I feel it’s my duty to help SLPs with this process.

In this episode of Private Practice Success Stories, I am sharing how you can successfully protect yourself and minimize your legal, personal, and financial risks.

As SLPs, we are generally pretty risk-averse. This is why many don’t choose to start private practices in the first place. We are perfectionists and we tend to be afraid of making mistakes. However, making mistakes isn’t a bad thing. Mistakes are a learning opportunity, so don’t let that deter you from going after what you want.

There are easy ways to minimize risk. It may feel scary when you are just getting started because there is so much to learn. But in my courses, I teach you everything you need to know to get started in a secure, low-risk way.

    In Today's Episode, We Discuss:

    • Why mistakes are learning opportunities
    • What essential protections you need
    • Why your start-up costs aren’t as high as you may think
    • Professional liability insurance and why it’s important
    • Why protection is your most important expense
    • Documents you must have when you start your private practice

I hope this episode inspires you to get started. Yes there are risks, yes you will make mistakes, but the biggest risk associated with starting a private practice is not starting at all. The steps to getting your business protected aren’t as complicated as you think! Don’t let that be the thing that holds you back.

I am running a special promotion right now so you can get my lawyer-reviewed legal form templates that you can completely customize and make your own. If you’re the kind of person that would rather be safe than sorry, these are 100% worth the investment. Check them out here!

Whether you want to start a private practice or grow your existing private practice, I can help you get the freedom, flexibility, fulfillment, and financial abundance that you deserve. Visit my website www.independentclinician.com to learn more.

How to Increase Your Financial Security Through Private Practice with Danni Augustine Jun 06, 2022
    Show notes

Have you ever wished you had more financial security as an SLP?

We all know that many SLPs are overworked and underpaid, but what if I told you that you could make as much money as you want while setting your own hours by starting your own private practice?

It is possible! Today on Private Practice Success Stories, I sat down with one of my Start Your Private Practice students, Danni Augustine, to talk about how she started her private practice with a bang and is now on track to retire both herself and her husband in their forties—yes, you read that right!

Danni has been an SLP for 5 years. After working in a variety of settings, she found her love for dyslexia intervention, myofunctional therapy, feeding, and all things birth-3. Not only has diving into these areas helped her business but it allowed her to fall in love with the SLP field again. She went from almost switching careers to now having a "boutique-style" private practice in Baton Rouge, LA, serving families in an office and home setting.

Connecting with her families and building relationships is what gets her up every morning (and her 20-cent coffee of course). In addition to her love for therapy, she has found a new passion for helping other SLPs gain freedom in their finances and careers. She is hoping to build a community of SLPs grounded in transparency, humility, and understanding the immense value of having a plan.

    In Today's Episode, We Discuss:

    • How your private practice can fund your retirement
    • Why it’s not greedy to want to be paid more for your skills
    • The freedom and flexibility of working for yourself
    • Tips for creating more financial freedom and security
    • Mindset tips for running your own private practice
    • How genuine connection will help you find more success
    • The importance of relationship marketing
    • How to budget and prepare to start your private practice
    • How private practice can help you with your financial dreams

It’s not greedy for you to want to get paid what you deserve. You should be able to make the income you want while also feeling fulfilled and working the schedule you want. Private practice can open so many doors for you financially just as it did for Danni.

If you loved what Danni had to say, send her a DM on Instagram and check out her podcast. She has such amazing messages and tips for SLPs who want to do what she did.

Case Study: Building a Six-Figure Private Practice in Less Than 2 Years with Samantha Asher May 30, 2022
    Show notes

Have you ever dreamed of starting a private practice that brought in six figures?

When many people think of starting their own private practice, they think of it as a side income, but it doesn’t have to be. You can grow it as much or as little as you want.

In this episode of Private Practice Success Stories, I sat down with one of my Start Your Private Practice students, Samantha Asher, to talk about how she grew her private practice to six figures while only working 3 days a week. She is able to support her family financially with her private practice and also be there for her kids every day.

Samantha Asher, MA, CCC-SLP is a speech-language pathologist and the CEO of Green Light Speech and Language Services, LLC. Green Light specializes in providing effective feeding, language, and speech therapy that children genuinely enjoy. Samantha built Green Light on the principles of responsive feeding and parent-child-therapist collaboration. Samantha also develops and shares content about responsive feeding and therapy strategies through her Instagram page @greenlightspeechtherapy.

Outside of the speech world, Samantha is a loving, happy wife and mother. She has two young children and a large rescue pup.

    In Today's Episode, We Discuss:

    • The tremendous need for private practices
    • Why it’s completely normal to be nervous
    • The benefits of having a community of people on the same journey
    • How Samantha managed her private practice while moving to a new state
    • How to know it’s time to take your private practice full-time
    • Why it’s okay to ask for reviews
    • Hiring team members
    • Samantha’s plans for her private practice moving forward

We all want the time to spend with our families while still providing for them. Starting your private practice is the first step to creating the life you want. It is totally possible to make a full-time income while only working part-time hours, and Samantha is proof of that.

She was able to build a six-figure private practice while only working three days a week and taking her daughter to ballet class. The possibilities really are endless.

Are you ready to take your private practice full-time?

I know when you are first getting started, it can seem overwhelming to think about everything you need to do to get to that point. In this episode of Private Practice Success Stories, we are talking to one of my students, Kristin Beasley, who started her private practice and grew it from zero to 10 clients in one month!

Growing Her Practice and then Becoming a Time Management Coach with Theresa Harp Apr 25, 2022
    Show notes

Starting a private practice is such an amazing way to branch out and do your own thing. It enables you to work with your dream clients on your own terms. One of my favorite things about private practices though is how it can open so many doors to you that you didn’t even dream were possible.

In this episode of Private Practice Success Stories, I sat down with Theresa Harp to talk about how she went from running her own private practice to starting a second successful business in a totally different niche.

Theresa Harp is a mother of four and a New Jersey native. She is a certified speech therapist and listening and spoken language specialist who opened a private practice for children with hearing loss in 2014.

As she began juggling the increasing demands in her home and her business, she began to study time management and productivity and discovered strategies to maximize her time. These interests led to the creation of an entirely new business called The Time Tamers, which provides time management consulting and coaching services to busy women.

Theresa partners with her clients to create customized plans so that women can accomplish their goals and spend their time doing exactly what they love.

    In Today's Episode, We Discuss:

    • How Theresa started her private practice
    • The importance of setting boundaries in your professional life
    • Why Theresa kept her private practice small
    • How and why she shifted to coaching
    • How Theresa connected speech pathology with her coaching business
    • Why your mindset is the most important part of making a change
    • Why progress is more important than perfection
    • The flexibility you get when starting your own private practice

I love to think of starting a private practice as a “choose your own adventure” experience. You can choose to do whatever you want with it! And if down the line, you feel called to shift focus and change directions, that’s okay!

Starting a private practice gives you so much flexibility. You can take the knowledge of what you learned in your business and apply it to anything you want to, just as Theresa did! If you want to hear more from Theresa, make sure to listen to her podcast and join her Facebook group!

Applications for the Grow Your Private Practice are now open! Visit GrowYourPrivatePractice.com and learn how we help growth-focused SLPs and OTs shift into private practice full-time and truly become the CEO of their business and their lives.

Whether you want to start a private practice or grow your existing private practice, I can help you get the freedom, flexibility, fulfillment, and financial abundance that you deserve. Visit my website www.independentclinician.com to learn more.

School Contracts and Being an SLP CEO with Ebony Green Apr 18, 2022
    Show notes

    What are you passionate about?

Something I love about being an SLP is that you have so many opportunities available to you after you get certified. You can work in traditional settings or you can do my favorite thing and start your private practice. Once you have your private practice, the sky is the limit on what you can do!

Whether you’re interested in school contracts, having multiple locations, a brick-and-mortar clinic, or just becoming your own boss, you’re going to love this episode of Private Practice Success Stories.

I sat down with Ebony Green to talk about her journey as an SLP CEO and how she made it all happen. She has a wealth of knowledge on running your own business as an SLP so I was so excited to have her as a guest.

Ebony Green, M.S., CCC-SLP received her Bachelor’s degree in Communication Studies from The University of Texas at Austin. She then joined a highly selective national teacher corps known as Teach for America and committed four years to teaching in underserved communities. During her time in the classroom, Ebony taught bilingual elementary school students for two years and then taught Spanish at the high school level for two years. Ebony worked closely with other teachers and professionals at her school.

Ebony decided to pursue a career in speech language pathology after spending time in IEP meetings and working alongside the SLP and other special education staff at her school in Houston, TX. While in her final year of teaching Ebony began taking post-baccalaureate courses at Texas Woman’s University to learn more about speech language pathology and became an SLP-A. Ebony later moved to Arizona and completed her Master’s degree in Clinical Speech Language Pathology at Northern Arizona University and became an SLP.

    In Today's Episode, We Discuss:

    • How Ebony landed her first school contract and how it impacted her business
    • How school contracts work
    • The pros and cons of contracts
    • Ebony’s School Contracts Masterclass & SLP Business Suite
    • The importance of having multiple streams of income
    • Why your network matters
    • How your mindset impacts your success

No matter how saturated the market might seem, you have something unique to bring to the table and you can be successful!

If you were moved by what Ebony and I had to say and are using it as proof that this is 100% possible for you too, I urge you to get in touch with us. We can help you whether you want to go the private practice route, the school contracts route, the Teachers Pay Teachers route, or something else. There is an opportunity and a need for you to start the SLP business you’ve always wanted to.
