    Private Practice Success Stories

My name is Jena Castro-Casbon, MS CCC-SLP (of The Independent Clinician and The Private Practice Solution).

I am part of a group of private practitioners who have taken client care into our own hands.

We are skilled clinicians who pride ourselves on providing high-quality care to our clients and their families.

We are fighting against productivity requirements, administrative red tape and unnecessary restrictions.

We started our own private practices to take control of our professional and personal lives. Of our schedules. Of our incomes. Of our future.

We work hard for our clients but on our terms.

We believe in helping others – but also helping ourselves.

We’re not interested in competing with each other. We hope that we all make it.

We are successful private practitioners and these are our stories.

Thank you for taking the time to listen to this interview.

We tend to think about financial costs, but there are also time costs, psychological costs, and emotional costs. I am breaking down each of these!

    • The monetary cost of starting a private practice
    • What you do need to pay for to start a private practice
    • Using your private practice to speed up the process of paying off debt
    • The cost associated with telling people no
    • Hidden costs of private practice
    • Considering what you are missing out on

Serving Clients and SLPs with Ardith Wuckert May 31, 2021
    Show notes

Have you ever wanted to create and sell a resource for SLPs in addition to your private practice offerings?

In this episode, I am joined by Ardith Wuckert. She is currently in the process of diversifying her private practice income streams, so we are getting into how she is doing that through digital paid resources.

Creating and selling digital resources is a great way to add another income stream AND help other SLPs. I think we can all agree that is a win-win!

Ardith Wuckert is a speech-language pathologist (SLP) who is passionate about all things speech! She is an evidence-based clinician that applies the latest research and proven practices to her intervention approach.

Ardith opened Speak Easy Speech Therapy to bring her dream of connecting with families to a fun, engaging and comfortable environment come true. She has been in private practice since 2016 providing in-home and clinic-based speech, language and specialized orofacial myofunctional therapy services to a variety of adults and children throughout New Hampshire. She also has a home-based clinic in Nashua and offers school-based therapy as well as teletherapy services to her clients.

    In Today's Episode, We Discuss:

    • Navigating the beginning stages of private practice
    • Why you shouldn’t wait to be making more money
    • Creating programs to support your practice and students
    • How you can increase your impact and income
    • Filling in the holes that you are seeing in your own private practice
    • Overcoming imposter syndrome

I am such a huge fan of multiple streams of income and also solving problems for yourself and for others. This episode is such a good reminder to keep increasing income as well as impact top of mind.

I highly recommend signing up for Ardith’s newsletter or browsing the programs that she has available to purchase! She can help you make speech therapy a little bit easier.

Moving into Private Practice with Nicole Donnelly May 24, 2021
    Show notes

Are you waiting until you have all of your ducks in a row before you start your private practice?

I hear this a lot because many SLPs are concerned about timing especially if they are in the middle of moving. I totally get that, but there are definitely things you can do to get started whether you are physically moving or just moving into private practice.

In this episode, I am joined by Nicole Donnelly, and we are talking about her journey into private practice which actually began when she moved to a new city!

Nicole Donnelly is the owner of Sunflower Speech Therapy, LLC located in New Buffalo, MI. She has always had a dream of opening her own practice but never truly believed it was more than a dream. She is pleased to announce that she decided to take a leap in July 2020, join Start Your Private Practice, and not look back. Her dream is finally her reality and she feels so blessed to have the opportunity to change the lives of children and families in her community through her private practice, Sunflower Speech Therapy, LLC.

At Sunflower Speech Therapy, LLC, her mission is to better the lives of children and their families by providing high-quality speech-language therapy services in a private practice setting. A sunflower typically produces greater than 1,000 seeds. Just as a sunflower produces seeds, a Speech-Language Pathologist produces seeds of knowledge, advice, and guidance so that together, as a team, they can help children reach their full potential. Throughout the life of a sunflower, it grows toward the sun. The goal of her practice is to provide children with the nurture and nutrients needed to become successful communicators as they, too, grow toward the sun.

    In Today's Episode, We Discuss:

    • Advice for those that want to open a private practice but are moving
    • Getting clients in a new city
    • How to create flexibility in your private practice
    • Responding to the need of the community
    • Making sure your needs are being met
    • Believing in yourself and your ability to open a private practice

When Nicole moved to a new city, she decided to create a new job for herself instead of looking for a new job. With the help of my Start Your Private Practice program, she is now very happy and her clients are too!

Nicole is proof that you can get up and running quickly and fill a void in your community.

I hope you learn a lot from this episode especially if you find yourself in a similar season. Even if you are not in the middle of moving, Nicole has such great advice for those starting a private practice!

    Show notes

Would you like to make more money as a speech-language pathologist? There are a lot of people who would, but very few people are talking about it!

I want to introduce you to the concept of multiple streams of income. You have likely heard about this before!

In this episode, I am talking to you about how this can work for you and how you can add your first or next stream of income.

    In Today's Episode, We Discuss:

    • Not being dependent on one stream
    • Ideas for income streams that you can have
    • Making sure you are not financially vulnerable
    • What happens over time when you have multiple streams

I highly encourage you to consider what type of income streams you can add to your life in order to diversify your income, make more money, build wealth, and make sure that you are not vulnerable if something happens to your primary stream of income.

By sharing my own story with this and walking you through the importance of it (especially as women), I hope you see that this is not only totally possible for you but is incredibly beneficial!

Real Talk About Private Practice with Danni Augustine Apr 18, 2021
    Show notes

Are you ready to hear a no-nonsense, straightforward story about starting a private practice?

In this episode, Danni Augustine is describing the steps that she took to get her private practice off of the ground and her motivations for doing so through a keep-it-simple approach.

Danni has been an SLP for 5 years. After working in a variety of settings, she found her love for dyslexia intervention, myofunctional therapy, feeding and all things birth-3. Not only has diving into these areas helped her business but it allowed her to fall in love with the SLP field again. She went from almost switching careers to now having a "boutique-style" private practice in Baton Rouge, LA, serving families in an office and home setting. Connecting with families and building relationships is what gets her up every morning (and her 20 cent coffee of course).

In addition to her love for therapy, she has found a new passion for helping other SLPs gain freedom in their finances and their careers. She is hoping to build a community of SLPs grounded in transparency, humility and understanding the immense value of having a plan.

    In Today's Episode, We Discuss:

    • How it can be hard to make a difference in certain settings
    • Why you don’t have to have an entrepreneurial mindset to start a private practice
    • Making responsible financial decisions before starting a private practice to take the pressure off
    • Examples of ways to keep your overhead low
    • Taking intentional steps
    • The many different ways you can have a private practice

    I

love that Danni talks about how she didn’t originally have any interest in private practice, but she felt like she had to start one. Now, she enjoys the four F’s of private practice: freedom, flexibility, fulfillment and finances.

Danni’s keeps everything simple, and it made getting started way less overwhelming. I hope listening to this episode inspires, teaches and pushes you to start your private practice because if Danni can do it, so can you!

I want to remind you that Danni followed the steps in the Start Your Private Practice System, and Spring Enrollment for that is getting ready to open! Make sure you're on the waitlist www.startyourprivatepractice.com/waitlist!

Building a Sustainable Life Through Private Practice with Mary Burns Apr 12, 2021
    Show notes

Do you struggle with burnout, imposter syndrome or feeling like you’re not able to do your best work?

Mary Burns is joining me in this episode to talk about how she designed a private practice that has helped her move past those feelings and into a more sustainable lifestyle. She is also giving her advice on how you can do the same.

Mary Burns is a speech-language pathologist and board-certified patient advocate. She has worked as an SLP since 2014 and is fiercely passionate about person-centered care and rural healthcare access. Although her academic training was certainly formative, Mary considers her experiences as both a patient and a caregiver to be the most influential on her career.

Mary launched her private practice, Overland Speech & Swallowing Rehabilitation, in 2018. Her practice continues to grow and change. Today, Mary is proud to offer mobile FEES to 22 counties across Oregon as well as in-home therapy to adults in central Oregon.

Mary also works as a mentor for The Medical SLP Collective and an instructor of McNeil Dysphagia Therapy Program. She also recently launched her passion project, The Sustainable Clinician, exploring new ways to help clinicians improve job satisfaction and sustainability through developing the internal skills that grad school forgot.

    In Today's Episode, We Discuss:

Why you need to realize that you don’t have to be good at everything or help everybody

How to choose your population based on how you want to serve people

Common feelings and symptoms of burnout

Why having autonomy in your work is so beneficial

There’s no such thing as a perfect private practice

What it’s like to have an adult-focused practice

    The benefits of mobile therapy

Creating a more balanced life was crucial for Mary, and I think we can all agree on the importance of that.

If you are struggling with the same feelings that Mary had before she started her private practice, I really hope you got a lot of value out of hearing her story.

Mary actually got started by joining the Start Your Private Practice System, and Spring Enrollment for Start Your Private Practice System is opening SOON! Make sure you're on the waitlist www.startyourprivatepractice.com/waitlist!

Building a Private Practice and Safe Space for LGBTQ+ Clients and Families: Emily's Story Apr 05, 2021
    Show notes

It is so important for us as professionals to create a safe space for ourselves and for our patients. Don’t you agree?

Private practice allows us to do that.

I am talking all about this with Emily McCullough from Parade Pediatric Speech Therapy which is a practice that is committed to providing a safe space for all kids and families on their communication journey.

Emily has more than 10 years of experience helping children and teens gain the communication skills they need to connect and interact meaningfully with the people in their lives. She believes that every child brings unique gifts and insights into the therapy process and that parents and caregivers know their child best. Emily values her partnerships with parents and caregivers and working as a team to help children feel proud, successful and empowered communicators!

She has extensive training and clinical experience in articulation disorders, receptive and expressive language disorders, autism, and communication disorders in bilingual and culturally and linguistically diverse children. Bilingual in English and Spanish, Emily received her B.A. in Spanish from Guilford College in North Carolina and her M.A. in Communication Sciences and Disorders at the University of Texas at Austin with a certificate in Bilingual Speech-Language Pathology.

Emily lives in Austin, TX. For fun, she enjoys getting outside, composing music, reading and spending time with her wife and dog.

    In Today's Episode, We Discuss:

    • The benefits of teletherapy for SLPs and students
    • What it takes to start a teletherapy private practice
    • How private practice allows you to create a safe space for yourself and your patients
    • Why being yourself as an SLP encourages your students to be themselves
    • How private practice allows for the freedom and ability to lead with your own values

I love this conversation with Emily because it really highlights how private practice allows SLPs to create an ideal work environment that suits their interests, personality and season of life.

I think it's really important for there to be more diversity in the field and also for there to be more diverse options for our patients, so I am glad you got to hear how Emily does this at her private practice.

Emily actually got started by joining the Start Your Private Practice System, and we are re-opening the doors to this really soon!
