    Private Practice Success Stories

My name is Jena Castro-Casbon, MS CCC-SLP (of The Independent Clinician and The Private Practice Solution).

I am part of a group of private practitioners who have taken client care into our own hands.

We are skilled clinicians who pride ourselves on providing high-quality care to our clients and their families.

We are fighting against productivity requirements, administrative red tape and unnecessary restrictions.

We started our own private practices to take control of our professional and personal lives. Of our schedules. Of our incomes. Of our future.

We work hard for our clients but on our terms.

We believe in helping others – but also helping ourselves.

We’re not interested in competing with each other. We hope that we all make it.

We are successful private practitioners and these are our stories.

Thank you for taking the time to listen to this interview.

    In Today's Episode, We Discuss:

From "Regular Clinicians" to Successful Private Practitioners: Meet Farwa, Teresa and Claudia Apr 24, 2023
    Show notes

Ever wished that you could hear directly from people who have gone from being regular SLPs or OTS to successful private practitioners after going through the Start Your Private Practice Program?

In this episode of Private Practice Success Stories, I’m introducing you to three amazing Start Your Private Practice alums. They are Farwa Husain, Teresa Ochoa, and Claudia Davisson, and they all three came from different backgrounds.

One was a school-based SLP or OT who couldn't wait to get out. One took time off from the profession to raise her kids and then came back and started a private practice working just three days a week, and another started her private practice small and on the side of her job as a school SLP, but actually retired early and has grown her private practice with school contracts and also contractors.

All three of these students had the same fears, doubts, and hesitations that you do, but they decided to go for it and join the Start Your Private Practice program to create a new future for themselves and their families

    In Today's Episode, We Discuss:

    • The stories of these three students
    • How private practice helps you create change
    • The freedom you can get from starting a private practice
    • How a private practice can help you take back control of your life and finances
    • The benefits of having school contracts
    • How having a private practice can impact the lives of your family
    • The hardest part of starting a private practice
    • The benefits of having a support system when starting out
    • Why you don’t need to worry about competition in your area
    • Their favorite parts of the program

I hope you found this episode helpful! I love how these students took a chance on themselves and have found so much success. We don’t learn about starting a private practice in grad school, and I am so happy to offer this program so that you can get the help and support you need to start your private practice and take back control of your life and finances!

Making the decision to start a private practice is a big decision - but it could also be the best decision. I can’t wait to help you start your private practice. To join the Start Your Private Practice Program, visit www.PrivatePracticeCourse.com

    Show notes

Are you looking for more flexibility and freedom than your current job can give you? Starting a part-time private practice might be the answer.

In this episode of Private Practice Success Stories, I sat down with Farwa Husain, a Start and Grow Your Private Practice Student, who started her own private practice that allows her to work only three days a week and with the clients she is passionate about- Gestalt Language Processors.

Having her own private practice offers more flexibility and higher pay than she was getting in the schools. It also allows her to pick up her kids at school and have the flexibility to be there for her family when they need her since her husband travels for work.

In this episode, Farwa talks about how having a private practice has allowed her to be joyful in her practice again and how she's proud of what she's built. She also shares her tips on networking, community, and getting referrals.

Farwa Husain is an experienced bilingual speech language pathologist and private practice owner of One-on-One Speech Therapy located in Raritan, NJ. She obtained her Master of Science degree in Speech Language Pathology from Teachers College, Columbia University.

Farwa presented at the 2022 American Speech and Hearing Association (ASHA) National Convention on ”Using Natural Language Acquisition to Support Autistic and Neurotypical Gestalt Language Development .“ She was awarded the 2021 and 2022 Award for Continuing Education (ACE) from ASHA. Farwa is currently serving as President of Morris County Speech and Hearing Association.

Farwa takes a holistic, sensory-driven, play-based approach to support children’s language development and goals.

    In Today's Episode, We Discuss:

    • Why Farwa decided to start a pediatric private practice
    • The freedom you get when you have a private practice
    • How the Start and Grow programs helped Farwa start her business
    • The joy that having a private practice has brought Farwa
    • How it has impacted her family
    • Where Farwa’s referrals come from
    • How having a specialty helped grow her practice
    • The importance of forming communities
    • Why you should always charge your worth

I hope you enjoyed this conversation with Farwa! I love how she put herself and her family first. She created a part-time private practice that allows her the flexibility and finances that her family needs to thrive.

Starting a Nature-Based SLP Private Practice with Carolyn Parker Apr 03, 2023
    Show notes

Are you feeling burned out and constrained in regular SLP or OT settings? Looking for something a little more outside the box?

In this episode of Private Practice Success Stories, I sat down with Carolyn Parker, a Start Your Private Practice program student, who was feeling that way too. She decided to do something different and started her very own nature-based private practice where she could get outside with the kids she serves and help them thrive.

Since then, she has found so much joy and freedom in her work.

Carolyn (she/her) is a speech-language pathologist in the heart of Central Michigan. She opened her private practice, Stepping Stones Speech Therapy, PLLC, in the summer of 2021 as a way to supplement income and pursue something new.

In the fall of 2022, Carolyn left her full-time school position as an SLP and AAC consultant to pursue her private practice. Stepping Stones Speech Therapy offers pediatric, in-home therapy focusing on early language, speech sound disorders, and augmentative & alternative communication.

Carolyn is passionate about inclusion in the outdoors and uses nature and natural materials as therapy tools in her practice. She enjoys teaching educators and therapists about the benefits of outdoor time and nature-based learning for students with disabilities through her Instagram account, @theoutsideSLP.

    In Today's Episode, We Discuss:

    • Why Carolyn decided to start a private practice
    • How she got her first client
    • Why she decided to specialize in nature-based therapy
    • How she incorporates nature into her therapy sessions
    • How word-of-mouth marketing has helped grow her business
    • Her plans for the future of her private practice
    • Why it’s okay to think outside the box and try new things

Take this episode as your permission to try new things and see what works. Whatever is in your heart of hearts, just try it! Don’t think that it’s weird, crazy, or that it can’t be done. You can thrive outside of a traditional setting, just like Carolyn.
