    Polite Conversations

Growing up in Saudi Arabia as a Pakistani, who now resides in Canada, Eiynah brings a global perspective to discussions about religion, politics, culture & sexuality – through the lens of a progressive ex-muslim immigrant. This podcast often focuses on unpacking various forms of extremism, particularly types that are less overt and masquerading as ‘intellectual’. Eiynah has a specific interest in covering online scenes like New Atheism and the Intellectual Dark Web.

    Episode 53 - Hindu Far Right Dec 10, 2018
    Show notes

This episode, I'm joined by "Ravi", he’s an Indian immigrant to the US, an atheist familiar with the horrendous directions online movement atheism has taken, and someone generally in the know about the western alt/far-right - All of which puts him in a good position to comment on, compare and contrast both far-right movements and how they’re rooted in extreme anti muslim sentiment. He did not want to be tagged or identified for this episode, because understandably, most people do not want to deal with nationalists and far-right trolls in their social media mentions.Join us for an informative conversation on religious identities in South Asia, origins of Hindu Nationalism, beef-eating and 'purity', the Taj Mahal, tokenism and much more!**(Apologies for any weird background sounds you might hear, like jingling and ticking. There was something up with Ravi's mic, but we didn't have time to reschedule unfortunately and we couldn't fully resolve the issue either. However, I think most of the recording is fine, just the occasional jingling )**----If you enjoy the show pls help it survive and thrive by supporting it via https://www.patreon.com/nicemangos

    Episode 46 - Sex, Booze, Ramadan & Eating Disorders Jun 14, 2018
    Show notes

Sex, Booze, Ramadan & Eating Disorders...are not things u would usually see grouped together... But here on Polite Conversations, I do love exploring a weird intersection. Ramadan is the ninth month in the Islamic Calendar, and considered one of the most sacred. It’s observed by Muslims worldwide as a month of fasting from sunrise to sunset. Not even a drink of water is permitted during the fast. It's like Lent...on steroids. ---- Join me this episode for a discussion on the many inconsistencies and hypocrisies I’ve come across during Ramadan in both Pakistan and Saudi Arabia. I end the episode with a story of Ramadan’s connection with eating disorders. This is a perspective I have rarely seen Ramadan explored from, and it’s one I’ve thought about often…so here it is, in episode form. ---- Articles mentioned in the episode:https://www.bbc.com/news/health-33479309https://www.independent.co.uk/student/news/ramadan-and-eating-disorders-fasting-for-allah-or-anorexia-10305579.htmlhttp://www.abc.net.au/news/2017-06-24/living-with-an-eating-disorder-during-ramadan/8646128Here are the links from the articles I mentioned in the episode and some extra ones too:Islam and Eating Disorders Blog: http://waragainsteatingdisorder.com/Australia:https://thebutterflyfoundation.org.au/ UK:https://www.beateatingdisorders.org.uk/USA:https://www.nationaleatingdisorders.org/help-support/contact-helplineCanada:http://www.edac-atac.ca/http://nedic.ca/----If you enjoy the show please consider supporting via Patreon - https://www.patreon.com/nicemangosThe show is entirely listener funded, and wouldn't exist without you. ----
