    Show notes

On this West Virginia Morning, an unattractive, slimy, two-foot salamander may hold the key to detecting healthy water ways in West Virginia.

For the Appalachia Mid-South Newsroom, WKYU's Hope Heffley has more on conservation efforts across the region.

Also a severe and long-lasting gastrointestinal illness is on the rise in West Virginia. The state Department of Health now shows there have been 139 identified cases of cyclosporiasis across the state, up from 69 less than a week ago.

And candidates for the Fifth Family Court Circuit, which covers Mason, Jackson and Wirt Counties, have just about one month to get their applications submitted to replace Judge Constance Thomas, who will retire at the end of August.

Whistleblower Raises Alarm On Fentanyl Trafficking, This West Virginia Morning Jul 16, 2026
    Show notes

On this West Virginia Morning, the client of a Charleston attorney says the DEA allowed millions of doses of potentially deadly Fentanyl into the United States.

In 2023 and 2024, the Sinaloa Cartel brought millions of doses of fentanyl into the U.S. mostly across the border into New Mexico. Those pills then headed east.

Charleston attorney and member of the House of Delegates, Tristan Leavitt represents federal whistleblowers. His client, DEA Special Agent David Howell, says the agency allowed millions of pills to come into the U.S. as part of an operation to capture cartel leaders at the direction of the New Mexico U.S. Attorney.

News Director Eric Douglas sat down with Leavitt to discuss the case.

Playing Baseball By Ear, This West Virginia Morning Jul 14, 2026
    Show notes

On this West Virginia Morning, it’s hard enough to connect a baseball and bat in mid-air. Imagine doing it when you can’t see.

In beep baseball, blind athletes rely on sound to hit the ball and run to a base. Last month (June), the East Louisville Lions Club hosted the Indianapolis Thunder, an adult beep baseball team, for a demonstration. Emily Chen-Newton with LPM News via the Appalachia + Mid-South Newsroom has more on the sport where players keep their ears on the ball.

The Underground Railroad’s Route Through Appalachia, This West Virginia Morning Jul 10, 2026

Before the Civil War, slaves escaped to the free north through the underground railroad. Cicero Fain is a historian at Marshall University documenting the region’s Black history through his Appalachian Freedom Heritage Initiative. Fain spoke with Inside Appalachia’s Mason Adams about documenting dozens of previously unknown underground railroad sites throughout our region.

Mobile Dental Care A Lifeline In Rural Communities, This West Virginia Morning Jul 09, 2026
    Show notes

On this West Virginia Morning, affordable dental care is a little-talked-about challenge low-income families face in this state, but there is an effort underway to change that.

West Virginia is home to many people who cannot access affordable dental care. State data shows by third grade - more than half of kids show signs of tooth decay. And more than 10 percent of older adults have had all their teeth extracted. From the latest episode of Us & Them, host Trey Kay visits a mobile dental clinic with public health hygienist Bobbi Muto.

Also the state Board of Education approves a partial intervention into Harrison County Schools as it grapples with overstaffing and a reluctance to cut positions, an issue many counties are facing after COVID-19 era funding ended.

And a new manufacturing firm is coming to Wood County – and bringing with it millions of dollars in investments and jobs to support data center development.
