Picking himself up from the dirt, his crumpled hat in one hand and a movie camera in the other, the Reverend Braxton Sawyer turned and looked back at the nudists who'd blocked his mad-dash attempt to invade the Sunshine Gardens resort. Sawyer's anti-nudism crusade, which began in the 1950s, led to confrontations with nudist organizations and even prompted the only anti-nudism law in the U.S., still on Arkansas' books. Despite failing to gain traction in the broader religious community and lacking empirical evidence to support his claims, Sawyer's controversial legacy continues to hover like a cloud over the nudist community and American civil liberties. 🪐

Ring reverberates Sep 08, 2023

Ninety years ago this week, the quiet of Swan Creek was shattered by the sound of boots and the clatter of camera shutters as a posse of deputies led by Sheriff Fred Miller descended on the Sun Sports League of Kalamazoo, Michigan. The fledgling nudist camp, run by a local dance instructor named Fred C. Ring and his wife, Ophelia, was spied on by authorities after a neighbor of the property, a social worker named Mary Angier, filed an official complaint against the nudists. The raid set the stage for Fred and Ophelia Ring to become the first individuals successfully prosecuted for nudism in the U.S., laying the groundwork for future battles over body freedom and personal liberties. 🪐

‘Running Around Naked’ book review Aug 28, 2023

Running Around Naked is not your everyday memoir. It is a true story that entices the reader to peek over the fence into the life of a girl whose normality was found within the confines of a nudist camp. Jelaine Lombardi takes readers along through her upbringing in the Seminole Health Club, a nudist camp owned by her parents. For those not accustomed to the sometimes insular culture of social nudism, it might feel like a nostalgic look at another world. For folks like myself who have a familiarity with the world of nudist clubs and conventions, I believe the setting is all the more rewarding to behold. 🪐

How Oh! Calcutta! used nudity to affect culture Aug 24, 2023

Oh! Calcutta! is an avant-garde play written by several British authors, including Samuel Beckett, John Lennon, Edna O’Brien, and created by Kenneth Tynan, which premiered in 1969 in Paris. It is a series of sketches, vignettes, and short plays that explore themes of love, sexuality, and human relationships. The play is notable for its use of full frontal nudity and sexual themes, and it was one of the first plays to feature nude actors on stage. 🪐

The intellectual rebel Aug 22, 2023

One could argue that the American naturist movement reached its intellectual crescendo in the 1980s and early 1990s under the leadership of Lee Baxandall. While nudist magazines had largely dissolved into soft core pornography in the late 1960s and indeed throughout the 1970s, and many nudist parks had begun to embrace more subversive (and profitable) activities – nude pageants, lingerie dances, and swinging – Baxandall sought to reconnect the movement to a larger purpose, intertwined with feminism, environmentalism, intellectualism, and social justice, informed by his decades of work as a writer and political activist. 🪐

The "Fire Light" who brought nudism to Brazil Aug 10, 2023

Luz Del Fuego was a Brazilian feminist, performer, snake charmer, and naturist who rose to fame in the 1940s for her highly controversial nude dance performances. Born Dora Vivacqua in 1917, she later adopted the stage name Luz Del Fuego, inspired by an Argentinian lipstick brand. Luz Del Fuego was not only known for her unique beauty, but also for her intelligence, passionate spirit, and gumption. She was a controversial figure for her use of nudity in dance and activism, who used her fame as a platform to criticize political hypocrisy and advocate for social reform. 🪐
