The bohemian life of Zelda Suplee Jun 27, 2023
    Show notes

Zelda Suplee was a writer, publisher, and occasional actor whose intelligence and fearlessness made her a powerful force for nudist advocacy and gender studies and education. She proudly represented both spheres publicly, appearing on television and in films, radio and print media over a career of advocacy that spanned more than forty years. 🪐

Nudism as the ‘third place' Jun 25, 2023
    Show notes

Returning to my local nudist club after months away felt like coming back to a familiar sanctuary. Surrounded by familiar faces, warm greetings, and a sense of community, it revitalizes me. Accepted as I am, it's a place where I flourish and feel unburdened from the stress of the real world. Whenever I’m there and witness this vibrant community, I think of the ‘third place’—a term introduced by sociologist Ray Oldenburg in his 1989 book, "The Great Good Place." 🪐

The male body positivity of Jackass Jun 22, 2023
    Show notes

Despite being the right age during its reign on MTV, I didn’t get into Jackass until just last year. Like a lot of people, I thought it was just garbage, dudes hurting each other and pulling mean pranks to get laughs from the lowest common denominator. But my wife is a fan, a fact which puzzled me since we met over a decade ago. When Jackass Forever landed on Paramount+, she coaxed me into watching it, telling me to sit through the opening at least. I relented and sat down, prepared to be annoyed. 🪐

There’s no naturism without volunteerism Jun 17, 2023
    Show notes

The current landscape for nudists is dire, necessitating collective organization. Faced with diverse threats - political, environmental, and societal - we have a choice: resist or surrender. Our organizational bodies, reliant on dwindling volunteer participation, are our defensive bastions, offering a legitimate voice to our cause. But, without engaged volunteers, they falter, and the movement suffers. 🪐

Nude revival: Toronto’s Hanlan’s Point Beach will now be bigger than ever Jun 16, 2023
    Show notes

In Toronto, Hanlan's Point, a clothing-optional beach, was threatened by plans to redevelop the Toronto Islands. Initially, a proposal to build a concert and festival venue near Hanlan's Point sparked controversy and opposition from the LGBTQ and naturist communities due to concerns about invasion of privacy and safety. However, the opposition group called "Hands Off Hanlan's" discovered further proposals that could jeopardize the beach's clothing-optional status and accessibility. Through organized efforts, public pressure, and collaboration with the city, the opposition group succeeded in protecting and improving Hanlan's Point beach, leading to the expansion of the clothing-optional section, infrastructure upgrades, and recognition of its historical significance for the LGBTQ community. 🪐

Nudity, homophobia, and the battle for Jacob Riis Park Jun 16, 2023
    Show notes

Jacob Riis Park, located in the Rockaways in Queens, New York, first established as a park in 1912, has a long history as an unofficial nudist beach. During the 1930s, the beach was informally known as "the people's bath," due to a historic art deco bath house that was first built there in 1932. In the 1950s and 1960s, the beach was a popular destination for members of the LGBTQ community, who faced discrimination and harassment at other beaches. As the decades went by and the beach became more mainstream, Jacob Riis Park became a site for tension of culture clashes. 🪐

    Fraught Flesh Jun 15, 2023
    Show notes

We have reached another Pride Month, a time of year for reflection, introspection, and solidarity. It’s a time of year I tend to mark by writing a piece about LGBTQ experiences with nakedness and within the nudist community, for better or for worse but always with hope for the future and appreciation of where we have been. Last week on Twitter, I shared a few of my previous posts on these topics to kick off Pride Month, accompanied by some thoughts on this particularly tumultuous year for the LGBTQ community in the United States. 🪐

Skinny dipping for a good cause Jun 12, 2023
    Show notes

We learn about the history of International Skinny Dip Day and one group who is actively promoting the event through SkinnyDipDay.org. The holiday, celebrated in July, aims to encourage body positivity and self-acceptance by inviting individuals to participate in skinny-dipping experiences. The event has evolved from a National Nude Weekend in 1976 to a seven-day Nude Recreation Week and eventually International Skinny Dip Day. Thomas Francine, inspired by his own transformative journey, created SkinnyDipDay.org to raise funds for the Fistula Foundation while promoting body positivity. The organization facilitates group skinny dips and donations to support life-transforming surgeries for women suffering from obstetric fistula. 🪐

The nudity of the 400 Pueblos Jun 10, 2023
    Show notes

This is a free preview of a paid episode. To hear more, visit www.planetnude.co

In 1970, the 400 Pueblos movement was born in Veracruz, Mexico, when a diverse group of 1,000 peasants from various indigenous communities and political parties embarked on a march from Coatepec to Mexico City, demanding the restoration of their unjustly taken land rights by the government. However, their march was abruptly halted by the military in Tlaxcala, resulting in the arrest of organizers on questionable charges, and their 19 day detention.

The injustice galvanized the movement, which was officially established in Veracruz upon their release, led in large part by organizer César del Ángel Fuentes.

The 400 Pueblos movement found its roots in the historic 1970 march, and for fifty years, this politically active collective of indigenous communities in Veracruz has not only protested the government's neglect and exploitation of their land and resources, but has done so with the striking and controversial tactic of protesting nude.

But the 400 Pueblos movement didn’t always embrace nudity in their approach to activism. That developed out of desperation, emerging as a winning tactic that would garner global attention to the group’s broader message, and ultimately inspire copycat protests by other activist groups looking to replicate their success.

Over the decades, their struggle has been met with harassment, imprisonment, and political retaliation. But as their leaders faced arrest warrants and their movement has suffered losses, the fate of the 400 Pueblos movement today hangs in the balance. 🪐
