India Rakusen’s 2022 podcast, 28ish Days Later, explores the whole bloody story of the menstrual cycle. Early in the series, she introduces the concept of mapping your cycles phases to seasons in a year – winter (menstruation), spring (follicular phase), summer (ovulatory phase), and autumn (luteal phase). Not only is this concept empowering in terms of understanding shifts in moods and energies, I can’t help but think—what could be more naturist?

In many aspects, the menstrual cycle is one of the most natural connections to the earth and moon. (Men’s cycles are more like the day/night cycle, with moods and hormones rising and falling in 24-hour cycles.) In some ways, naturists are aware of this and celebrate it, but in other more practical applications and engrained thinking, there is a lot of oppression. 🪐

‘Naked Fear’ book review Nov 07, 2023

Naked Fear: Anti-Body Myths, Phobias, Delusions, and the Madness of Modesty (2010) is the full title of the second book from Dennis Craig Smith, his first being the Naked Child: Growing Up Without Shame (1981), which is known for its informal study Smith performed interviewing adults who had grown up in naturism to dispel stigmas associated with child exposure to nudity. Naked Fear could be seen as the flipside of the earlier study: the book takes an exhaustive look at the anti-body culture that has been established by western civilization, highlighting specific people and organizations responsible for such repressive attitudes and how these attitudes are maintained. Aggressive in tone and fragmented feeling at times, Naked Fear is otherwise an informative book on the history of western colonial society’s efforts to censor the naked body and avoid any discussion of its parts and functions. However, at least for me, it had a few other issues. 🪐

Inside the Wisconsin Assembly’s latest hearing on anti-nudity bills Nov 03, 2023

The Wisconsin Assembly Committee on Criminal Justice and Public Safety conducted its first public hearing on the proposed anti-nudity bills, AB 503 and 504, this past Tuesday. The two bills are written to target and effectively outlaw the World Naked Bike Ride (WNBR) in the state. In contrast to the previous public hearing convened last month by the Wisconsin Senate Committee on Mental Health, Substance Abuse Prevention, Children, and Families—which was held with almost no advance notice—Tuesday's hearing was scheduled with at least a week's notice. This enabled activists across the state to more effectively organize their efforts to attend and voice their opposition to the restrictive legislation. Consequently, the committee witnessed a diverse range of citizen speakers delivering compelling and coordinated testimony against the bills, bolstered by impassioned arguments against their enactment, and only two speakers in support of the bills, both of whom are legislators who are responsible for the bills’ authorship. 🪐

Desert Sun Resort in Palm Springs has been sold Oct 26, 2023

In yet another significant development that could bring further changes to California's naturist community, Desert Sun Resort in Palm Springs has been sold for $6,950,000 and is currently under contract, as indicated in public listings on Redfin.com and LoopNet. The specific details about the new owners and their plans remain undisclosed. No public announcement has been made by the club on their website or social media. This sale adds to an expanding series of recent transformations in the state's nudist landscape, and a growing malaise among California naturists, who have seen no less than four nudist clubs either go textile or go up for sale just in the last three months. 🪐

Tonight, beauty made me cry but not in the poetic way of being moved to tears. Beauty rubbed salt in old, raw wounds, wounds that are an initiation rite for the vast majority of women. The instigator of salt was an article on Chinese women defying their beauty culture. These women are getting buzz cuts in a culture that values long hair, rejecting high heels, diets, makeup and other norms, risking abuse and censorship. These observations I have shared are initiation for many women; they are old wounds and they are new wounds, and deserve to be seen as much as our bodies do. 🪐

The spiritual dance of nudity: Interview with a Wiccan Oct 23, 2023

In the realm of contemporary spirituality, a unique connection exists between Wicca and naturism. Today, I aim to explore this intricate relationship with Liam Cyfrin, an Australian-born writer and editor who currently resides in the United States. Liam has made notable contributions to the modern world of Wicca, including co-editing Shadowplay Magazine since its inception in 1984, and regularly contributing articles to an Australian magazine called WitchCraft. He has also collaborated with musician and author Fiona Horne on several books, including Witch: A Personal Journey (1998) and Pop! Goes the Witch: The Disinformation Guide to 21st Century Witchcraft (2004).

Notably, Liam is a lifelong naturist, and he asserts that this lifestyle seamlessly aligns with both Wicca and the modern Pagan movement.

In asking him for an interview, it was my hope to explore the spiritual significance of nudity in Wicca through Liam’s experience, to examine the intersection between Wicca and naturism, and hopefully to touch on the historical context and ethical principles that underpin this enigmatic practice. Those are lofty aims for a short article, but hopefully if we fall short of achieving those goals it will at least have been an enjoyable read. What more can we really ask for? 🪐

More trouble in Madison: Wisconsin anti-nude bills advance to State Assembly Oct 19, 2023

At the close of last month, the Wisconsin State Senate introduced bills SB 477 and SB 478, measures that immediately rang alarm bells for advocates of body freedom and civil liberties. These bills aim to criminalize all public nudity in Wisconsin, using a particularly conservative definition of nudity. Adding to the concern, administrative action followed when the state Department of Natural Resources announced new rule amendments that threaten to outlaw nudity on state lands.

In a concerning development yesterday, Assembly Bills 503 and 504 were introduced in the Wisconsin State Assembly and referred to the Committee on Criminal Justice and Public Safety. These bills serve as the lower house counterparts to Senate Bills 477 and 478, a necessary step for the legislation to advance beyond committee stages in both chambers. Given its influential role in vetting crime-related legislation, the Assembly's Committee on Criminal Justice and Public Safety will be a focal point for advocates tracking these bills. 🪐 🪐

Wisconsin nudity ban: DNR throws a curveball Oct 18, 2023

Wisconsin has historically lacked state anti-nudity laws, but recent legislative bills are causing concern among naturists. These bills aim to criminalize public nudity, particularly the World Naked Bike Ride, and restrict minors from events involving adult nudity. If passed, they could lead to Class A misdemeanor charges with fines of up to $10,000 and nine months in prison. Simultaneously, Wisconsin's Department of Natural Resources (DNR) has proposed rule amendments, partly related to the closure of Mazomanie Beach in 2016, that threaten to ban nudity on state lands. These changes, separate from the legislative bills, could essentially criminalize public nudity statewide. The combination of these legal shifts poses a significant challenge to naturists in the state. 🪐

'Friends of Bates Beach' Avocado Fest booth removed after complaint Oct 17, 2023

By any measure, Friday, October 6, was a very successful day for Friends of Bates Beach at its Avocado Festival booth in Carpinteria. Our new location in the high-traffic area brought us many visitors, almost all supportive and enthusiastic about our being there, and we collected nearly 300 names and emails through our raffle.

Then came 7:30 a.m. the following morning. I was awoken by a phone call from the Festival director, informing me that she had received two complaints that we were “soliciting minors” by allowing them to spin our prize wheel. 🪐
