Anatoly Moskvin The Dollmaker | Perplexing | Ep.131 Jun 30, 2025

Anatoly Moskvin was a Russian historian and linguist with a disturbing secret—he was found to have exhumed the bodies of at least 26 young girls, mummified them in his apartment, and dressed them up like dolls. Claiming he wanted to preserve their spirits and believed he could bring them back to life, Moskvin kept the corpses for years, speaking to them and even celebrating their birthdays. The case shocked the world not only for its macabre nature, but also for the eerie calmness with which he described his actions—like it was the most normal thing in the world to turn your flat into a haunted dollhouse.

Join us for a darkly fascinating, occasionally morbidly funny trip through stories that prove truth really is stranger than fiction—and sometimes a whole lot weirder.

The Lead Mask Deaths | Perplexing | Ep.126 May 19, 2025

Show notes

Send us Fan Mail

The Lead Mask Deaths refers to a mysterious and unsolved case from 1966 in Niterói, Brazil, where the bodies of two Brazilian electronics technicians, Manoel Pereira da Cruz and Miguel José Viana, were found on a hillside wearing formal suits, waterproof coats, and peculiar lead eye masks. Near the bodies were a notebook with cryptic instructions and empty water bottles. No signs of violence or struggle were found, and toxicology reports were inconclusive due to decomposition. The bizarre circumstances, including the lead masks (presumed to protect from radiation or light), have led to widespread speculation, involving everything from scientific experiments and spiritual rituals to UFO theories. The case remains one of Brazil's most perplexing unsolved mysteries.

Ohhh Carl Tanzler — now that’s one of the creepiest love stories you’ll ever hear, and not in a romantic way. Buckle up.

Carl Tanzler (also spelled Tänzler), a German-born radiology technician in Florida in the 1930s, became obsessed with a young Cuban-American woman named Elena Hoyos, who was a patient at the hospital where he worked. She had tuberculosis, which was a death sentence back then, and despite his best (and very bizarre) efforts to "cure" her, she died in 1931.
