Scary Movies In Real Life | Perplexing | Ep.113 Feb 17, 2025

Show notes

In this gripping episode of Perplexed Podcasts, Kate delves into the fascinating yet unsettling stories behind famous horror films that draw from actual events. She begins by introducing the concept of real-life horrors inspiring cinematic tales, setting the stage for a deep dive into specific stories.
Kate explores the legend of the Dybbuk Box, a supposedly haunted Jewish wine cabinet that inspired the film "The Possession." She discusses the box's mysterious history, tales of paranormal activity associated with it, and how these elements were translated into the film's chilling narrative.
She turns to the backstory of "A Nightmare on Elm Street." While not directly based on a single real event, the film was inspired by a series of articles about Southeast Asian refugees who, after fleeing to the U.S., died in their sleep following nightmares. Kate examines how these true incidents influenced Wes Craven's creation of Freddy Krueger, a character who attacks his victims in their dreams.
Information about The Winchester Mystery House, the labyrinth-like California mansion believed to be haunted by the ghosts of those killed by Winchester rifles. She ties its story to the film "Winchester," discussing how the house's bizarre architecture and the tragic life of Sarah Winchester were adapted into the movie's plot.
